So many people put the Bioshock "Would you kindly..." as one of the best lines in video games. I still say the Spec Ops The Line "You are here because you wanted to feel like something you arent - a hero" is one of the single biggest gut punch lines in all of games.
The youtuber Razbuten refers to his wife as "the woman I live with." She played Undertale. He was doing videos on what it's like for people who have no concept of videogames what it's like to play videogames. She never wanted to kill anyone so she didn't. She had no clue what "exp" was or meant. It was neat because she, someone who has no concept of videogames, didn't fall into the traps because she had no knowledge of those concepts.
I avoided DDLC+ for my PS4 mostly cause I still have PTSD of playing DDLC to be more precise the final half of the game where Monika didn't call me by my character's name "Takashi" but me called me by my real name "Derrick Haggard" and revealed that she knew I was recording footage for an LP by saying "So you were recording me and the other girls that's weird but hey you do you. How about I give you something real nice to record."
Eternal Darkness was really good at getting the player, one level the character was reloading a flintlock pistol and the pistol malfunctioned and blew the characters head off...... then the game reset to just before. Another one I liked was when low on ammo you go into another room and there is ammo everywhere, you go to pick it all up and just as you finish.... you realize the game got you again.
I would really like a remake of Eternal Darkness.There was an attempt by the original creator to make a spiritual successor on Kickstarter (or a similar platform) but it failed. But in actuallity I just want to play Eternal Darkness again with its Lovecraftian Horror, but with graphics that are acceptable by today's standards.
Ah Spec Ops The Line....a game for the first time i never felt like a hero. Really wish we had more Military Shooters be it WW or Modern like Spec ops, a game that genuinely questions your very self morale and guilt trips your every actions and decisions. a game that disguises itself as another generic action game only to reveal itself to be a phycological horror game. Shame games like those never gotten enough attention, It's always COD or Battlefield.
The ways Eternal Darkness would mess with the player was awesome. I was in H.S when it came out, playing at my best friends place. The way it would make you think your CRT TV was messing up was very convincing. I remember getting up to swat a fly off the tv that wasn't actually there, or checking to see if one of us was sitting on the remote when things like the channel would change to CH.4 (you used to have to have it on CH.3 back then) or the volume would drop or even Mute.
Superliminal is a great game with messing with your head...all about optical illusions based puzzles...using stuff like force prospective trickery to manipulate the world around you, like making a box larger by holding it closer to you (looks bigger when closer to you)
Even though it was such a basic game, Limbo always stuck with me. The atmosphere and score were fantastic and it just had this eerie sense of dread leading to such a depressing ending.
I still remember entering a room in Eternal Darkness full of monsters and suddenly it says, "Please reconnect your controller" or something like that and I quickly ran to the N64 trying to make my controller respond while my character kept getting hit...thinking "whats wrong with the damn controller", just to realize it was a sanity effect as the room resets and there are no monsters at all.
I remember watching/helping my husband play through of Eternal... When the volume started getting louder and louder and louder at 3AM; yeah we were spooked. The characters in the game see the walls bleed, vertigo, and so on. But the console crashing cut scene was so realistic! My husband was panicking. Full blown panic! Epic game.
Yes! I've never had a video game, before or since, make me jump up and start panicking that wildly, lol. When I realized it was due to my sanity meter running low I was so impressed!
Yeah, I totally remember having DDLC messing with my head the first time I played it, but it was still a super interesting game and I really enjoyed it
WHERE THE HELL IS DEAD SPACE 2! Isaac Clarke had hallucinations from his dementia throughout that game. The hallucinations had no warning too, sometimes it would be a jump scare other times you had to mash a button until Isaac snapped out of his episode.
I played eternal darkness like… 15 years ago and as soon as I saw that damn bathtub in the video I knew what was going to happen next. Some shit sticks with you forever.
Spec Ops The Line is my all time favorite and it deserves the same amount of love that The Last of Us, Halo, Red Dead Redemption so on and so forth excetera excetera gets

I almost reset my PC! I had my finger on the reset button when the sequence continued and I looked up like 'what's going on now' and saw the Batmobile riding along, and I was like 'huh?" Really god me good.

Honorable Mention: *Pony Island -Do not let that cute title fool you, Pony Island is anything but. Complete with chipping away at not only the 4th wall, but also the 8th wall. Making you think the game is possessed!
What do you mean by 8th wall? I've never heard of that before! I had siblings doing Drama in high school so I became familiar with the fourth wall early on, but what's the 8th?

If computer characters were to interact with with real world in some way (i.e. making you tamper with the game settings outside of the game) that would be breaking the 8th wall.
There was the whole "Verum Rex" advertisement in Kingdom Hearts 3. It came out of nowhere and I had no idea what to think at the time. "Is SquareEnix really trying to advertise an upcoming game in the middle of another game?" "Did I accidentally switch the channel to TH-cam or something and get this commercial?". Wouldn't include in a top 10, but a top 25 maybe.
This list is zero. There was a PC game in the late 90's that when subscribed would call your home, e-mail you and mess with you like you were all part of David Fincher's The Game.
I dont think some of these mess with you in real life. Narrowing the rules of this list is needed. I dont see breaking the fourth wall as messing with you. Heck, Fire Emblem Warriors does that too! Whoever you chose to be your narrator ( I like male Robin because I really like David Vincent) they will tell you to get outside and take a break or get sleep or dont sit too close to the tv when you get to the title screen. Ingress wants you to get so into it right from the tutorials. Claims it's not really a game. Has promotional method actors appear as famous experts on its premise at special events.

I think the Eternal Darkness insanity effects that got me were when I was suddenly on the ceiling. I thought the game bugged, and I was confused and after like 10 seconds or so I exploded. And the other one that actually got me the hardest was when a telephone were randomly ranging and another time a baby was crying. The first one made me randomly looking at my phone and the other made me annoyed that a person with a crying baby was in front of my window and she wouldn't go away. Until I realized the sound came out of the tv
I think the one that should be on the number one list is OneShot. OneShot is the most Meta videogame that always Interacts with the Player in real life and have a Emotional feeling of Joy and Sadness, It's not really famous since it's not some people think that this is just a normal RPG, I mean Markiplier played it but only finished on the Ending of what the Game wants you to think and it's just sad that OneShot didn't get the attention that wanted or needed. And also OneShot can give you serious tears and a Game "Breaking" experience.

Personal favorite was the corrupted save one. I bricked a memory card because I ripped it out of the GameCube.
