Hello! I’m new to gardening, so far I’ve had two full growing seasons, zone 7a in northern central Virginia (2 hours south of Wash DC). I have fox glove that I started from seed last year that I’m excited to see bloom this year which are a mixed blend of colors. I’ve been having great luck with dahlias. My favorite is somewhat pink and that’s Belle of Barmera. I also loved making arrangements with Crème de Cassis. I’ll be growing lots of plants this year both ornamental and vegetable. I’ve had to do a lot of editing in our landscape the house sat empty for a while and the previous owner was elderly and after this past summer, I can see how invasive plants can quickly take over. I’ve been battling English Ivy, vinca vine, autumn olives and wild blackberry. It’s been quite the challenge. This year since I have more editing to do than I have minutes in the day, I’m going to do something radical just so I can see beautiful flowers instead of waiting to create/reclaim flower beds. And as I continue to edit and create new beds, I’ll just transplant anything I want to keep. I’ll be preparing some winter sowing jugs this weekend.

Greetings! Glad you’re here! Wow that sounds like an exciting challenge and opportunity! Yes, winter sowing is a great way to plant so many more plants when dealing with a new property. Foxgloves, dahlias are some of my favorites, too! Best of luck and stay tuned! 🌸

Enjoyed your video on winter sowing. Tried last year with some success- really fun process to watch the seeds develop and grow without any assistance from me .

Hi, I just subscribed. I'm just wondering what zone/ state you're in. I like to keep that in mind, especially when starting seeds and planting out. I'm in MA zone 6a.

As an artist I would say that the colour wheel doesn’t work that way in practice as you also have the blues of skies, browns of soil and wood, and the crisp contrasts from colour comparisons like whites and purples that actually brighten and embolden the pinks bit only through contrast. The danger with adoption a single colour palette, even for a section of a garden, is that the distinctiveness of semi-similar plants can be lost (clearly very different plants in form and size will remain different). I’d definitely encourage some whites and purples in there for depth and contrast if you are able.

I did see you were looking to include a white cosmos and you mentioned your white fence, both of which will work really well as contrast. My original comment is meant more in reply to your comments about the colour wheel rather than the actual plants you have selected 😊

Thank you so much for your feedback! I 💯 agree with you! I always try to have the primary colors of red, green, blue and yellow in my garden to create a balanced color composition. In this instance I wanted to introduce pink to counter the yellow undertones. I will also be posting a video very soon on the purple flowers I will be planting! Thank you!
