I’ve been winter sowing for 5 years now and love it! I used milk jugs the first 3 years and had good success. The last two years I have used 3-4 inch pots to sow my seeds. I use 3 large clear storage containers that I’ve drilled holes in the bottom for drainage. You also drill holes in the clear top so the plants can get rainwater and ventilation. Just place the pots into the storage container and you have a small greenhouse. I’ve had great success with perennials, annuals, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and basil. It is such a great savings. I look forward to trying some of the seeds you sowed next year!
Thank you for this tip! I am just starting out trying this and this may be a more effective method for me, as we don't buy anything in the 1-gal jugs!
Don’t ever apologize for your excitement! Shout it from the rooftops
Your giddy excitement is how I feel too! My neighbors think I’m crazy because I talk to my plants and make sure every one of them get their personal attention. Everyone gets their morning pat. My plants are also bigger then all of theirs. 😂😂
Same here! I talk to them and to the bees and butterflies... Neighbors think whatever... 😂
Tried winter sowing this past year. Awesome. Zone 8B. Instead of writing on my jugs.. bought 12" tall stake labels.. wrote specifics on stakes.. stuck in jug since top was off.. then when I planted in ground.. used same stake and stuck in ground.. Perfect.
Also, when I direct sow seed.. take colorful hula hoops..lay in garden.. fill with 3" of great soil.. scatter seeds.. top with soil.. water and great luck with Zinnias n' Cosmos..once my seeds start popping up.. I can remove hoops and move to another location.. repeat process with another flower. So festive with hoops.
Don’t you tame your joy! Let it soar sister!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love your excitement! And I can’t wait to watch your 2025 version of this video! ❤️💯🌻
love your excitement
Oh Kim I just found out and I'm crazy like you 😂 Be proud and not apologetic girl!!!
I love your energy
I loved this video and you earned a new subscriber... I like your garden video style no pretentiousness like the others.
I'm 7ab in eastern Oklahoma
You. Are. Sooooo. Cute!! I'm exactly like this too!! Su much more than a kid in a candy store!! Nothing better than gardening🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
“You dont get any money back but I do guarantee it” 😂😂😂
Hi there, Kim!! Gosh, I really appreciate seeing your results here. I have watched a bunch of "how-tos" on this method, and was already feeling behind (despite having snow and below freezing temps for the last 2 weeks straight here in my area!!). So seeing your planted dates and the date on your unveiling vid here was supppperrr helpful! Now I feel like I have plenty of time to collect my milk jugs an get some potting soil! haha Thanks so much for a fun and informative video!
❤❤❤❤ well done! 🎊 🎉
I. Am. Amazed.
Starting today
So excited to see your results! I was very interested in your success with sweet peas! I will definitely start them that way next year.I just started this method this year but only did seeds that need cold stratification. With flowers like cosmos, zinnas, and morning glories, I just buy 1/4lb bags of seeds from American Meadows, sow them directly in the ground, and voila, I have flowers really fast. I tend to plant large areas of zinnas and cosmos, so having 10 or 20 plants that you cold sow that are a little ahead of growth...pretty time consuming. I'm also focusing more on natives - so beneficial to wildlife! Plant lots of dill and parsley - amazing what it attracts.
How fun! 🤩
I would put something on the opening of the bottles to prevent snail damage, like some kind of netting or old stockings, gause... So water can still get in, but the snails can't.
Someone said use coffee filters in the bottom before adding soil? Have you tried this?
I am as excited as you and I thank you for this video. I think I will record opening mine as well. Might be my first video I have the guys to put up on my channel. Nerves stops me every time.. well self consciousness stops me to be honest. Have a Blessed day Kim!
❤❤❤ wow i love winter song
Me tooooooo!
Did you place the jugs in an area of full sun or part sun with afternoon shade? I am winter sowing for the first time and so excited! Also, you saw some slug damage? Ugh--so they are going in the top of the jugs? And here I thought the jugs would prevent that! But wow--your plants are AMAZING!
Hi Kim 🌺 . The seedlings grow well and they look amazing and they are going to be so pretty in the garden . Have a great week. 🌺🌻🌺
Thank you! You too 😉
Wow, that was fun! So much good results. I noticed great germination with American Seed which comes from the Dollar Tree, 4 packs for $1.25. 😁
You are the Rachel Ray of sowing seeds.
I’m gonna try again but lacking excitement. I’m the one that planted into the ground 2 wks ago & no germination. I am still pampering the area because I’ll need it anyway sooner or later. But, I’m hopeful that my ground just hasn’t gotten cold enough for germination.
I want it to be fun. No labor of love that’s ridiculous. Hard work & fun is what I’m shooting for.
Wow. Now that is quite the compliment. I love Rachel Ray and I take that as a honor to be in the same category so thank you so let me ask you a question. Why don’t you try instead of directly sewing the seeds in the ground? why don’t you try going along with me and the seed starting either indoors or in the winter sewing or both? Where are you located?
We have winter snow for 5 months
So inspiring!
You too can do it!
Not the best of luck but the Shasta daisies are doing great! Seems like insect damage. I'm from Southern California. What a fun video. I can't wait to see your garden throughout the summer!
Thank you. I’m glad you are here with me
I loooove how excited you get🤩🥰 I’m just the same!! Always love when you post a new video!💕
You're the best! Thank you for sharing this. I’m a nut lol. 😆
Love your videos! You singlehandedly got me into winter-sowing. Especially Mexican Sunflowers. I was just as giddy as you were while you were opening your containers! Thanks for sharing!
See this is amazing. I love that you are the same. It’s so fun and exciting and we did this. We grew this. Well of course mother nature did most of it but it’s so amazing. Thank you for sharing. You’re awesome 🤩
OMG Congratulations Kim what an awesome job you have done getting these going. You have every right to smile until your cheeks hurt and share your enthusiasm. Your garden is going to be unreal this season. Great work :)
Thank you so much!! That’s so sweet! 🥲
My first year so this is a great video for me. Where did you get the larger jugs. TFS
Kim, wahooooooooo 🎉!!! I had the same experience with lavendar when I opened my container. My plants are not nearly large as yours but I am in zone 6a. Not as warm here. More seeds to sow!
This was my first year winter sowing, I watched your videos last year. I am in NY so I still have a week weeks to go. But we will see. Thanks for your videos..
That is awesome! How did they do for you?
I am going to follow your footsteps.
I love it!
Love love watching you. It was my first year and I’m hooked
Ok so what would help you most?
You have definitely inspired me to try winter sewing again!
That is so good Promise to share the results! I know you can do this!
For those fungus nats use mosquito bits or make a tea to water with. It works really well. Love your excitement I am totally the same way.
Thanks for the tips! They are annoying! Lol
love it that you had such success i am going to try it for my 2025 garden I also get excited about what i grow Im glad it makes you happy too
That’s so great. What are you going to try
First time viewer. Definitely not last. I tried the milk jug method last summer but didn't tape. I don't have natural talent and it was a waste of time, effort and money for me. Every year I swear it's the last for me but then spring comes around and I get that feeling. I'm beginning seed now to try to plant ahead of next spring using grow lights. We'll see. I appreciate your success. It's motivating. I'm in western NC, zone 7.
So would you follow along with me starting in January and give it one more try?
@@thesoutherndaisyllc I'm on the Daisy Train. There's an age where you dig in the recycling bins at the dumpster without embarrassment, even though your kids are crouched down in the seat of the car. I'm there.
Will you make a video when you plant everything in your garden? I would love to see how you divide the plants when planting. I’ve had some success with winter sowing. This year was my second year of trying. But now that I see all of yours I’m anxious for next year already lol ! I will definitely try a lot more ! Also do you direct sow any seeds? Thanks
It’s happening this week and you’ll have videos galore of all of this!!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Yes I direct seed zinnias but also trying some new ones 🤩. Oh and always direct seed like cukes, squash zucchini watermelon cantaloupe. Domt wait for next year, let’s grow this year. Try it and see how it works. You can’t succeed if you don’t give it a shot 😘
The cat litter jug looks like a great container for ws! I have access to lots of those!
They are amazing. I’m collecting already now!
AWESOME!!! I think I was almost as excited as you were ... I have a suggestion that I think may help. Lavender as well as many herbs and perennials need a bit colder stratification than you are getting from March forward ... maybe try starting some in February, or any time after Winter solstice ... Good luck... and happy growing!
Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try
Yay!!!!!!!!!! I'm doing mine tomorrow ❤❤❤
Loved your video. Thank you for sharing your joy.😊
But Miss Kim, THE SCABIOSA!!! Can you transplant that? I've got a few other plants that are the same size and I was wondering what is too small to plant in the garden. 🤔
It’s growing little by little. Typically I like them a little bigger than this!
Ok you got me this time I’m going to give it a try. This is your best winter sowing video
OK, just make sure that you weren’t jumping the gun and trying to start too soon. My best advice to you is have patience collect your things and start at the right time when the temperature is outside are freezing.
I love winter sowing... I'll be doing this ALL year round. So excited for you 🌿🌻🌿
Great Job!!!
Oh my gosh!!! I’ve also had sooooo many gnats this year and never had a problem before.
Oh my god I love this!!!!!!
That’s awesome!!!!🤩
So exciting! but now what, when can you plant them outside😅 I'm still not sure -thank you for all your help you are great and I'm learning a lot😃
I’m planting now. I’m making lots of videos for you too!!!
WS has been so exciting for me. It’s my first time and germination was almost 100%. I did some SS also.
Love your excitement and enthusiasm! Excellent results. I am going to try a test to compare one seed WS, and the other using the snail method popped into a container. That might help with separating when transplanting into the garden. Happy with the flowers you inspired me to WS! 😍😍😍
Your excitement makes me excited. I'm going to try your winter sowing method
Beautiful and healthy plants.
They look great. A lot of mine this year are really stunted. Not sure why. 3 years ago I planted Shasta Daisies in a pot. They didn’t come up. I completely forgot about them. Last spring they came up. Grew like crazy. I potted them up twice. Then fall I divided the plant into 3 and planted them in the landscape. They are almost 2 feet by 2 feet this year. Don’t rule those seeds out. I would tape it back up and give it more time.
Those WS results were grown with love. Mine are great this year too.
I'm enjoying your winter sowing results (newly subscribed!) and wanted to share that I recently heard of some using saran wrap instead of duct tape. I totally missed my winter sowing window this year, but I think I might the saran wrap next year. (Saran wrap that's on a hand held roller, used for packaging - that's what I heard.)
THAT IS GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!! What an incredible idea. I wonder how it would hold up over the winter and the elements? I want to try that also! Thank you for watching :-) and subscribing. You’re the best!
Hey Kim! I sowed 19 winter co ntainers and had good life in 13. 2 are still trying to grow in the greenhiouse and pitched the rest of them in my garden. Always exciting to see yours!
👏❤️
YAY how exciting!!! I'm so happy for you, looking forward to watching them grow 🩷🌱🌸
I have been so looking forward to this video! I am as excited as you and what beautiful results! Love Love it Kim! 😍🌸🐝
Good job. Love your enthusiasm
Congratulations on all of your plants! I love your unveiling videos since it IS better than Christmas when you open all of your containers and see those plants in there!! Don't give up on the coneflower. My experience has been that they are a little slower to grow and the ones I was disappointed in last year, really came back looking great this year!
Are there follow ups to show how they do once in the ground? I’m afraid they go leggy? No need to apologise for wonderful enthusiasm! 😊
Any plant can get leggy. They can be pinched back and kept fine. It’s so worth the try!!!
Hey Kim! This may be silly, but curious how you prep the garden with pulling the weeds up. I have several LARGE beds that i get in and weed, but curious if the process could be easier-not sure if I'm using the right tools and all that. Maybe a future video idea?
Love your channel 😊
They’re all so beautiful!!
New Subscriber 👋 Great video! I was just as excited!😊
Everything looks great and I love your enthusiasm!!! Thank you for sharing!
wow, those are beautiful. your seed sowing was a winner!!! thank you for sharing. enjoyed the video.
I like the idea of using the wagons…. Did u leave them in the wagon the whole time they were sown? Moving the jugs around is a pain in the butt 🤣
Such great success, congratulations!!
You are delightful! Thank you for sharing. I just started my first ever "winter sow!"
I truly enjoy your winter sowing videos. I finally had success with seed starting using the winter sowing method. Love it!
Yay!!!! I’m happy for ya! I totally get your excitement, I get it! New Subscriber here🪻🪻🪻🪻
Was a great video,thank you i love your videos.❤
❤
I started the same Ferry Norse hollyhock seed but mine are a fraction of the size. Do you fertilize your soil when starting seed?
The plants in containers do you set them in your garden after you plant the seed in March.
I plant the seeds in January and they sit outside in the garden closed until after my last frost in April. Coolest concept ever!
@@thesoutherndaisyllc Thank you so very much this is very helpful for me!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Whoo don't tame it it's time to let those seeds loose❤❤🫛🥦🥬🥕
Can we do that in zone 2
So fun! How do you determine how many seeds to sow in your containers?
Are the American Seeds from the Dollar Tree?
Yes but they also sell them at Walmart
U kojem mjesecu sijati povrce da bi imala sadnice za vrt😊❤
Hi Kim. Since you are in a warmer zone, do you keep your jugs in a more shaded area or full sun? I worry about them getting too hot so I probably open mine too early because I have mine in full sun in zone 5B
I don’t. They do fine in the direct hot full sun. But it’s also ok if you opened them and continue to let them grow in the container. Experiment and find what works for your area! 😊
@@thesoutherndaisyllc I panic and worry that I will fry the seedlings. When I open them too early, I lose the whole mini greenhouse effect and the containers dry out so quickly. I love how you let yours come up and out of the top of the jug.
I find the winter sewing very confusing. My last frost state is March 6 and we have our first frost date is in 😊November so when would you start seeds in the jugs?
Ok let me help you! You would start I’d say end of November and plan to open them after March 6 once the freezing night temps are gone. Does that help?
We are still in the 100’s in November is that too hot?
Out temps are kinda crazy here in central Texas sometimes it’s in the 90’s in December, and sometimes it’s cold. Never can tell lol
I think it depends on what zone you are in and if you are going through unpredictable climate changes like we are in Long Island, New York, zone 7B. I’m waiting until mid February. She’s in North Carolina, their weather is totally different from many Northern and Mid-West states. I don’t believe November would be good to start if your last frost date (possibly January?) date is in March if you don’t live in the South or South Western states. This is very important that some of these videos don’t specify (zones / state you live in). Do your own research, so it will work for YOUR zone/ state.
I am in zone 5b maine my last frost isn't until may when would i winter sow? I heard i can do it now but i am so confused lol@ArmyVetlady-m6k
What zone do you live in?
Do you start sowing in the last month of winter?
No i start typically in January
I'm from South Africa in zone 9b. Our winter starts in June. So do I sow in the beginning of winter or when in winter?
Excited to try winter sowing next year🥹
When is the best time to start winter sowing?
Where are you located.
@thesoutherndaisyllc I am in Maine in 5b my last frost is May, I heard I could do it now but I am not sure.
