Bought one new, standard pipes, for about $1200. Loved riding it. The higher the revs, the smoother it ran. Of course ran best in the fall cool weather. Keeping the three carbs and points tuned was a challenge Only transportation for one year.... Handled good, even in snow, carefully. It was green w/ the gold piping. Probably Forest Green, but I always said it was British Racing Green.

I owned one in the 80's. Black expansions and a Dunstall fairing. Paid £300 and 3rd party insurance was 250.I was only 17 though. It wasn't that quick but sounded great.

I got one in 1978 while studying. Visited my family once every month 448 km. Took my girlfriend to Southern France camping. The carburetors needed adjustment before going back. Had a fast front wheel puncture on the front tire on the autoroute. Great fast motorcycle.

You were right to say it is very loud, couldn't hear a thing you said after it fired up! Great looking bike, never owned one but rode a couple of friends' bikes back in the day and loved the engine in particular, torquey for a 2-stroke with a great crackle from the exhaust even on standard pipes

Gotta love the pinking sound the chambers make on these two strokes. I had an 79 RD 400 Daytona Special back in the early 80's and have never lost my love of these old two strokes.

I Had one of these in 1983 and absolutely loved it., could only afford to insure it 3rdparty fire & theft. [If you bent it - you repaired it]
It wasn’t the fastest thing around for its top speed but the acceleration was unbelievable.
I blew a hole in the piston going flat out all day, after the a mechanic friend fixed it for me he test rode it and it scared the cr*p out of him.

I put at lease 120,000 miles on one of these, had expansion chambers, was only getting 10,000-12,000 miles out of the piston and rings, much more with the synthetic injection oil. when the carbs were synchronized and timing set perfect they where a beast with the power ban, once the radial tires came out these were much better in the canyons. Overall great engine, so-so frame, loved beating the Kawasaki 500 and Yamaha RD400

You had iron liners in the US, this is a Euro / U.K. spec Nikasil plated cylinder bike. The give away is the high rear studs on the cylinders. The theory was that the rings only became the wear item. In practice it was more trouble than it’s worth. Few companies know how to plate these properly whereas everyone can reborn a stroker and oversized pistons and rings are readily available.

Rode pillion on one that belonged to a mate back in 1983 but it had standard pipes. Not in quite as good condition as this one but they are great bikes. Another mate owned a GT750 kettle but he was trying to renovate it and it was sat in his garage. Not seen one on the road for years. Owned an X7 a few years later after passing my test and fitted some Micron pipes. Certainly improve performance and looked far better. You cannot beat a decent two stroke!
