    All your foam cutting vids really helpful! I'm going to change mey present, cumbersome bow to your model, and rejuvenate my interest in building foam wings/aircraft. Diolch yn fawr from Wales, Andrew!

      Spot on, and so courteous! One question ,And, - what thickness is the ali for the template , or is it a 'borrow' from and old oil can, or something!?

    • @AndrewNewton

      0.3mm thick, used for window flashing. Available in small rolls from hardware stores. www.bunnings.com.au/consolidated-alloys-150-x-0-3mm-x-10m-weatherflash_p1100453

    Thank you for showing us how you use templates.
    Can I ask what type of foam you use, and from where do you get it?
    I am having problems sourcing suitable foam here in the UK.

    Hello Andrew - Many thanks for this wonderfully put together video. I went to Home Depot and could not locate the metallic material shown at the 2:02 mark of this video (I think you referred to it as window flashing). Can you please provide a link to where you get it from? I will see if I can find it locally. Thank you.

      Many thanks. I've tried both Home Depot and Lowes and no luck. Not saying they don't have it, just that I don't know what its called. I showed the customer service representative the video and he didn't recognize it either. Even if you can find the name, or a packaging label, that would be of great help. Many thanks Andrew, and again, keep up the great job on your videos! Look forward to watching more :)

    Hi Andrew! Finally made myself a hotwire cutter and getting down to business..... SO! The Clark-Y: Ever notice how the bottom surface is not meant to be horizontal? (according the the schematic the nose is pitched down a bit) Which leads me to ask - Do you just mount your home-made "clarky's" (lol) flat at zero degrees, or do you go to the trouble of tilting them at the angle they were meant to be - and if you have, did you notice any big improvement in lift/performance Vs the horizontal mount? (knowing you, I'd bet you tried both ways ;)

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct Bill. I usually mount on the fuselage with the trailing edge lifted by about 5mm. It took a while to realise that was needed.

    hi andrew good tip using alufoil for templates thats the same way i made the wings of my first plane but i did got zapt by electricty by touchen the templets while cutting the airfoil... lol
    i'm trying out the KF 1 and 2 step wings on my newest gliders, did you ever try them out?

    Great video. Question please: When attaching the templates to the ends of the foam, how do you maintain exact parallel between the two? Seems to me that if I attached one template a centimeter (or a few millimeters) above or below the opposite template the wing would be cut out crooked? I didn't see in the video how you ensured that both templates were mounted exactly opposite each other. Thanks very much for the information. Great channel. New subscriber!

    • @AndrewNewton

      Just measure up from the flat foam block base and match to marks on the template. mm accuracy is easy

  • @Ultrarc

    nice video, I got some 50mm knauf foam, its quite expensive ($26) in NewZealand and wondered if you can get two wings out of one slice one on top of the other, seems like a lot of waste?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ultra RC Yes I have cut 2 RG15 wings from a 50mm piece. As long as you're careful it can be done.

    Hello Andrew, thanks for sharing!! I'm following your videos from a while and I found them really useful, thanks for the tips.
    I have one question: The wing profile as you showed at the begin of the video, have some convex shape in the bottom (below from 0, or below from wing edge).
    I assume that to mount the wing in the fuselage, you have to shape the fuselage with the shape of the wing, to keep the edge of the wing (cero line) aligned to the edge of the plane. Please, could you confirm my assumption?
    My question arise because I used to mount my foamboard wings in my square fuses... obviously, my square fuses doesn't have any cavity to hold the wing. Also my foamboard wings are really simple. As you mentioned... hotwire is the next step!
    Anyway, thanks for sharing your work and keep doing like this.
    Kind Regards from Argentina
    (sorry for my bad english)

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Juan Gabriel Vazquez You are correct Juan. Often all it takes is one small piece of foam under the trailing edge, or you can cut the shape into the fuselage.

    I have just built my hot wire cutter. Now, in case I use a flat bottom foil, may I align the bottom of the template with the bottom of the foam block in order to not to have to cut the underside?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but you will get a ridge on the bottom of the leading edge. Just needs more sanding to smooth out.

    what program you use to choose the profile and print it on size chosen,
    and what type of plate you use to cut the wing, here in Brazil we use the isotope p3.

    how would this work with a flying wing? such as the ft arrow the centre airfoil template would be different to the outside, what is different? the legnth of the template?, do i make the outer template i identical im really struggling

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The outer template starts off as a scaled down version of the inner airfoil but then it is thickened at the trailing edge for strength. You could keep it simple and use the same inner and outer templates for a wing like the ExAir Synapse

    Which is the ampers and volt foa perfect cut, in my last attempt I burned the steel wire.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank, for the wire I use it's about 4 Amps. To get 4 Amps I need 16V for my 850mm bow and 6V for my short bow. It might be different for your wire.

    what are the pins called?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fpvZeroo My wife gave them to me so I asked where she found them. Here is her answer.
      The pins are called “T-Pins”.
      They are used by knitters to stretch out and re shape washed shawls and lace work. They come in packs of 50
      They are made by a company called Knitter’s Pride (USA)
      Outside of the USA, the company is known as “KnitPro”, so when google searching, you may find links to both names.
      I buy mine from Handsome Fibres here
      www.handsomefibers.com/Knitters-Pride-T-pins_p_216.html
      But search in other knitting suppliers

    Hi Andrew, Thanks for the detailed clarification on the airfoils setup. I have attempted my first 2 wings but am getting a concave leading edge,laterally. I'm using a 3S battery and the SS 7 strand wire. (Found this on Bay www.ebay.com.au/itm/320720054185?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT ) Travelling slowly with the pull through but probably not slow enough. I'm taking about 30 seconds for the cut. Your video seems to indicate your cuts are faster than this... I'll try a 4S battery but am wary of the additional heat on the foam and cut through. Any suggestions would be welcome?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rustyact01 Sounds like too much drag and bowing of the wire. That's why I increased the voltage to 16v (4S) I'm using 90lb (40kg) wire and stretching it as tight as possible with out breaking the frame. I suspect your wire would not take 16V and lots of tension. Also depends how long your wire is too, mine is about 800mm between the aligator clips. I'll get back to you about cutting time after my next wing.
