DIY Pinstriping on the Rolls-Royce - What will it look like?

  • PART 56 of this series, time to paint on the Pin Stripes!!!!!
    My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
    This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
    This is PART 56 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
    If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
    If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.
    PO Box 2597
    WATFORD
    WD18 1HT
    UK
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    • @mitchd949
      @mitchd949 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First class? Are you joking? The painting and detail work being done outside in the rain with poor or no prep is awful! All the time and effort on painting should be done on the mechanical aspects of the car: driving, stopping, handling. Better to let the outside look rough and make it a good driver. I can't bare to watch these last couple videos as he's truly living up to the DPO moniker from any car forum (DPO means Dumb Previous Owner).

      @@mitchd949 Get a grip Mitch. You don't have to watch if you don't want to. Vince makes it very clear to everyone that he's a DIYer and that he lacks experience here. 99% of his viewers are the same. I wouldn't have risked pin striping the car in the rain to be fair but it has been overcast for weeks (at least where I live anyway). At some point, you have to just get on with it and take your chances.

      @@CallumRepairs DIY doesn't imply bodge work. Don't make excuses for poor quality work - learn what is required to get good results and execute accordingly within your budget. I watch MMV because I like how he troubleshoots (especially electronic faults) and works his way through things. I comment positively when appropriate. Calling sub par work "first class" comes across like a parent trying to say fake glowing and positive comments to a young child who is obviously doing less than quality work.

    My favorite series on TH-cam. Love how it turns out. This car had so much work done on, so many hours of careful fixing, it’s just as admirable as the handwork that went to manufacture it. I must say, I’m little bit shocked how well a rattle can sprayed car can look. And these pin stripes - well deserved own episode.

    19:22 the idea of that brush is to load it with paint and hold the handle slightly higher then the bristles so the paint runs down. This is how you get straighter lines and a better finish plus a lot faster

    • @ChiefDestructor
      @ChiefDestructor หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, that's not really true. A Pinstriping brush has longer bristles to hold more paint than an average brush so you can draw incredibly long lines without interrupting and even do one side of a car with just one long stroke. The paint is NOT supposed to run down because then you would never be able to draw a horizontal line. The surface you are working on draws the paint out of the bristles. That's why you get different results depending on the surface (glass, paint, clearcoat, etc.) The line is only straight because of a steady hand. If you have a style line like here you hold the brush between thumb and forefinger and the rest of the hand runs along the style line. By doing so you automatically follow the style line and keep the same distance

    • @MrFujack103
      @MrFujack103 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ChiefDestructor more or less what I said then? I say about holding the brush slightly at an upwards angle otherwise it will start heading towards the handle. The straighter line comes from a good flow of paint and drawing it out in a single stroke not doing bits at a time.

    Beautiful finish with those stripes 👍 Indeed 80's cars do have slight curves, even everyone says they are boxy and with straight lines. As a kid in the 80's, used to draw cars by hand and noticed those slight curves when studying images about them from car magazines and brochures.
    Well maybe Ford Sierra was considered to be round shaped car, especially when compared to it's predecessor Taunus/Cortina, or Opel Kadett E / Vauxhall Astra 1984 - 1991.

    Well done on that striping. I think the car painters do use a guide tape. I remember watching a sign writer painting the name on an ambulance, he had lithotape (red photography tape) and a stick with a ball for leaning on and just some whippy brushes. He did a lot of marking up first with tape to get height and width correct before he started. Still wonderful to watch though.

    What they used was a curious device which basically was a wallpaper seam roller with a very fine dagger brush angled to it with the exact capacity to hold one side's worth of pin striping. I remember the Jag leading legend who used to hand lead old jags and had hands and lower arms almost blue black from decades of leading, when he had painted he used such a contraption which produced perfect pin stripes every time having thin and thick brushes for a single thick strip or attach a thin and thick brush for thin and thick stripes and he always did a little flourish at the end to make the little stripe loop over like a wave up and over to terminate with the thicker line. His place was in Caterham and the folks at then Caterham cars used to ask him for advice or help on building their fledgling sports cars based on the Lotus 7.

    A hair drier would have been a good idea mate.

    Nice job, stencils can be tricky.
    Two pieces of advice for the other side. Firstly, leave a piece of the stencil free at both ends. It helps when removing it. Secondly, when pulling, don't do it too slowly and hold the tape near the paint. I've had tape break and fall back onto the paint ... Oh, and don't do it whilst it's raining, you'll catch a cold. 😉

    Quite often these pinstripe masking tapes can be total rubbish. But this stuff is pretty good!
    Nice job Vince!
