In 1970 I was 11 years old, and this song was all over the radio, both AM and FM. You couldn’t escape it, nor did you want to. It was both gentle, and volcanic at the same time. It transports you to places inside your very being. You both heard the build from the opening stanzas, to the final ending. It’s about magnificent as it gets.
Come to think of it, the whole album was everywhere for awhile, and it was glorious. Between this and Abbey Road and a number of other stunning releases in that little bunch of years, it’s a good thing we were too young to worry about getting anything practical done. I personally spent about half of my life in the years from about 1970-74 lying on my family’s red shag rug, lost in a pair of earphones.
I was 16. My parents took me to the city to a concert of their music. I watched them love the music and saw how much they loved each other. That night was life changing to me in terms of how I feel my mom n dad. They have now been married for over 60 years. I'm so happy they both are still around at 82. Memories are amazing

Rock matured so fast! Met Garfunkel when I was 10. Took guitar lessons with my friend Lou Pearlman, whose parents invited meover for dinner and told me to bring my guitar. When I arrived, Lou introduced me to his cousin Art Garfunkel. I had NO IDEA who he was. We played some guitar and he gave me his autograph that I still have. My friend Lou went on to form NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys.
A perfect conjunction of first-class everything, from S&G at their final peak together, to the evocative wintry New York vibe (how many of us grew up staring at that legendary album cover, and the wonderful back cover, with its funny little lower corner shot of Paul pushing his head on Art’s back, and the sea of witty, enigmatic lyrics?), to the legendary “Wrecking Crew” musicians, to the glorious production sound. “Bridge” is one of those albums you just point at, and say “THAT is how you do it, people, right there”.

And one of the best parts of Simon and Garfunkel is their blending voices like this, so that you can't tell who is singing what part unless the voice goes above Simon's best range (where Garfunkel stands out) or gets to the middle of Simon's range (where the timbre of his voice reveals itself). I met both on a railway Station in Cleethorpes England in 63, they were waiting for a train to Leeds and onwards to London, two nice polite guys, heavily into folk music/jazz at the time, they had performed at an open air event the previous two days, Paul played and sang for an audience of about ten people the acoustics were reasonably good the singing was sublime, happy days indeed.

It was just a muddy hole in the ground, filled with pigeon droppings and discarded chip papers. Art and Paul were still in preschool, pulling the legs off crane flies and defecating into trash cans. From what I've heard, Simon wrote both the music and lyrics, and Garfunkel rehearsed the lyrics without any music in the studio, and Simon and their Producer heard him and agreed then and there the music had to change to follow Garfunkel's rendition...

When reacting to S&G make sure to only do the studio recordings b/c much of the sound is hard to replicate in concert and the instruments are as important as their voices, esp. Art G.(the taller one) whose voice is so silky smooth. Paul Simon is considered a poetic genius and one of the top song writers of the last century. NEXT UP: SOUND OF SILENCE, THE BOXER, HOMEWARD BOUND, CECILIA, MRS. ROBINSON and many more. This song won best song and several more Grammy's in 1972. They broke up not long after this was released after being together such a long time. It was heartbreaking for their fans but they reunited for one concert in Central Park for a free concert in the 80's and it is estimated over 500,000 showed up. The concert is epic. I disagree only to say the live version from the Central Park that doesn’t have all studio enhancements only shows how unbelievably pure Art Garfunkel’s voice is.
It is worth watching the live recordings just to see how much in sync they are even though they rarely look at each other. But for the studio recordings, it is important to listen in stereo - it matters for many of those recordings.
At about the same time, James Taylor released his guitar version of YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND and pal and songwriter Carole King released her piano version. These songs are forever bonded together by almost nuclear bonding.

All of these songs transition album fans from SGT PEPPERS pinnacle-album concept to the Anthem Song anchoring album concepts. From there, the '70s and '80s were full of albums that had a few good singles but at least one powerful 'anthem', later to be called 'power ballads'.

The beautiful words and music are from the genius mind of Paul Simon, but the crystal -clear vocals are the great Art Garfunkel. Together, Simon and Garfunkel were one of the greatest duos in all of rock. They covered a number of genres, but their forte was folk rock. Garfunkel shone mostly alone on this song, but their harmonies were what made them so wonderful. Listen to some of their earlier work like "Homeward Bound" or "The Sound of Silence" and you'll be mesmerized.
You need to listen to Simon and Garfunkel live from Central Park in front of over a half million people Outdoors on a cool night singing The Sound of Silence, the boxer, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs Robinson, Scarborough Fair, etc etc etc, you will be blown away! no one has the talent to sing and play guitar like them without computerization today
In the original song. There was no third verse. Lyrics were if you're dying my friend. I'll take your part and all instruments dropped out and Paul sung that one line.
This is a very underrated band, imo. They really had something to say, and stories to tell.... As many did through the 60s and 70s. Especially the 70s. Thank you for sharing your time, and thoughts, with all of us. This is a bit of nostalgia. My Dad sung this since I remember. I cry when I hear it. Partly joy, and part sadness. So much can be gained from music... If we just give it a chance. Something to be said for the classics.
First, they are NOT a band lol. They are a duo. But I totally appreciate your comment on the classics. it was really kind of an anthem to the end of the 1960's tumultuous decade of change, even though IMO the 1960's did not end until President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974. to learn the history of the 1960' early 1970's is to understand the music and how it changed and was involved in that change. Really the 1950's didn't end until President Kennedy was assassinated...that upended everything along with a few other things that some politicians are now trying to rewrite history for their own spin and agenda... but I digress....

Art Garfunkel has the voice of an angel, truly, and sings this song SO beautifully. Meanwhile, Paul Simon is the songwriting genius. They were both better together than either of them solo, in my opinion, and they left us so many beautiful songs before they split.
Simon and Garfunkel were together since high school. In fact under the name Tom and Jerry while in high school they recorded songs that got radio play. There is so much of their music even though they only did 5 albums together. My personal favourite song is For Emily Whenever I May Find Her. If you want to see a song of pure anger expressing hopelessness try Patterns. For resilience and hope in spite of everything against you, The Boxer. And for just pure beauty the studio recording Scarborough Fair/Canticle. Sound of Silence was the first album I ever bought was Sound of Silence and I still know the words to many of the songs, including A Simple Desultry Phillipic (or How I Was Roger Macnamara'd Into Submission)!

I'v loved this song for many many years, Paul Simon wrote the lyrics intending on just two verses then Art Garfunkel said "i think the song needs a third verse because it feels like the end of the second verse is just sitting on the run way ready to take off" and so Paul relented and there you have that beautiful third verse that, in my humble opinion brings it full circle.

I'm sure it has been remade by many, but this is THE version. Like, if you hear the song on the radio or in a movie or TV show, it's Simon and Garfunkel and not anyone else. The beautiful words and music are from the genius mind of Paul Simon, but the crystal -clear vocals are the great Art Garfunkel. Together, Simon and Garfunkel were one of the greatest duos in all of rock. They covered a number of genres, but their forte was folk rock. Garfunkel shone mostly alone on this song, but their harmonies were what made them so wonderful. Listen to some of their earlier work like "Homeward Bound" or "The Sound of Silence" and you'll be mesmerized.

In the original song. There was no third verse. Lyrics were if you're dying my friend. I'll take your part and all instruments dropped out and Paul sung that one line.
This is a very underrated band, imo. They really had something to say, and stories to tell.... As many did through the 60s and 70s. Especially the 70s. Thank you for sharing your time, and thoughts, with all of us. This is a bit of nostalgia. My Dad sung this since I remember. I cry when I hear it. Partly joy, and part sadness. So much can be gained from music... If we just give it a chance. Something to be said for the classics.
First, they are NOT a band lol. They are a duo. But I totally appreciate your comment on the classics. it was really kind of an anthem to the end of the 1960's tumultuous decade of change, even though IMO the 1960's did not end until President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974. to learn the history of the 1960' early 1970's is to understand the music and how it changed and was involved in that change. Really the 1950's didn't end until President Kennedy was assassinated...that upended everything along with a few other things that some politicians are now trying to rewrite history for their own spin and agenda... but I digress....
Sorry, don't agree about the underrated part. I believe they have been well and properly appreciated. They will go long in history as one of the best duos ever.

Art Garfunkel has the voice of an angel, truly, and sings this song SO beautifully. Meanwhile, Paul Simon is the songwriting genius. They were both better together than either of them solo, in my opinion, and they left us so many beautiful songs before they split.
Although they did get together again for the Concert In Central Park which brought us A Heart In New York and My Little Town

Paul simon is the genius songwriter. Art had the voice of an angel so he became part of the duo, but it’s Simon who’s the national treasure.
Simon and Garfunkel were together since high school. In fact under the name Tom and Jerry while in high school they recorded songs that got radio play. There is so much of their music even though they only did 5 albums together. My personal favourite song is For Emily Whenever I May Find Her. If you want to see a song of pure anger expressing hopelessness try Patterns. For resilience and hope in spite of everything against you, The Boxer. And for just pure beauty the studio recording Scarborough Fair/Canticle. Sound of Silence was the first album I ever bought was Sound of Silence and I still know the words to many of the songs, including A Simple Desultry Phillipic (or How I Was Roger Macnamara'd Into Submission)!

Friends since elementary school, they first found a little success as teens in the 1950s, performing under the names Tom & Jerry, with a hit, written by Paul Simon, titled “Hey, Schoolgirl.” A few years later, in the 1960s, they gained traction under their real names with a string of massive hits, including “The Sound of Silence,” “Homeward Bound,” “I Am a Rock,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme.” This song was from their fourth and last studio album, also titled “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” This album also included another of their most ambitious songs titled “The Boxer.” The duo broke up a short while later, but they eventually reunited and have performed many times together over the years. Paul Simon went on to a very successful career as a solo singer songwriter.

I'v loved this song for many many years, Paul Simon wrote the lyrics intending on just two verses then Art Garfunkel said "i think the song needs a third verse because it feels like the end of the second verse is just sitting on the run way ready to take off" and so Paul relented and there you have that beautiful third verse that, in my humble opinion brings it full circle.
