My prediction for a metal genre to go to the chopping block..extreme metal..it sounds the same...the lyrics are terrible..it has no heart at all..etc..european extreme metal also dies in the next five years!

Katrina Reminiec Are you joking? Extreme metal is 30+ years old at this point (It was also born in Europe, which debunks your stupid prediction about it dying in five years), which discerning by your plain ignorance of the genre must be at least twice as old as yourself. It sound's the same? Black and death metal don't sound alike at all, thrash also doesn't sound like either of those, and doom is a whole other story. If you think the lyrics of extreme metal bands suck, that just shows your unfamiliarity with the genre, there are a tonne of great song writers out there in all those different genres of extreme metal. Give your fucking head a shake.

I feel like metal can still grow. There are countless genres of music that you can fuse metal with. This wouldn't have to make it heavier or lighter but it would introduce new sounds into the genre possibly birthing new sub-genres.

We saw more than "hair metal" die off - speed metal died off before it really ever branched off of heavy metal, when dedicated thrash bands emerged and cut it off, for example; NWOBHM, Nu-Metal, and First Wave Black Metal (for just a few examples) were self-limiting products of their time and place of origin. Were there really ever enough bands playing "pirate metal" or "viking metal" to justify separate subgenres for what are, essentially, just flavors of folk metal at best, when they aren't simply themed heavy metal? (I mean, do you really have a real subgenre when it's populated only by Running Wild or Bathory and a couple imitators and tribute bands?) Arguably, traditional heavy metal was a dead genre, in spite of some valiant efforts to revive the old-school sound and composition styles; subsequent generations of genre pigeon-holers have balkanized what was traditional heavy metal into separate NWOBHM, early doom metal, and speed metal, kicked doom metal into its own ghetto, and then slapped a straightjacket onto what was left of traditional heavy metal and renamed its new ghetto as "power metal". Does a subgenre really continue to "live", if it has been redefined and renamed until everyone pretends it's no longer relevant?

    • @katrinareminiec6838
      @katrinareminiec6838 6 ปีที่แล้ว

@@pietrayday9915 Speed Metal was a spring board for Power Metal...So in a way it did branch off...before it died...or the music industry killed it...NWOBHM was a short lived era in metal.. So that subgenre died a natural death when bands from other countries( Trust who was a french metal band comes to mind )...started adding them to the mix.

Medieval/Renaissance inspired metal (neoclassical? I haven't explored that genre)

As you mentioned 'White Metal', which currently is only Black Metal with christian lyrics. I was thinking that there could be a real distinct subgenre acting as the "opposite" of Black Metal, a real distinct White Metal. Riffs would be more church like and heroic feeling with for example added organs and the vocals would be Gregorian chanting. Something like the clean parts of Batushka or this video: /watch?v=JDyT0B7rKPQ For lyrics I imagined something that would use the perspective of the "light side" but as I'm not really a fan of religions it would show their faults with tongue in cheeks lyrics.

I tend to see the entirety of metal as a sort of spider-web of genre crossovers and mixups, resulting in a huge variety of pretty unique bands out there. Beyond this web, I feel comfortable saying that Metal fuses pretty well with other genres, leading to even more variety beyond the web. I can imagine these fusions can themselves cross back over into the web of metal subgenres and mixes of subgenres and create many more unique sounds.
Metal as a whole might not be able to get much more brutal, dark or evil, but there is still plenty of potential for uniqueness and experimentation I think.

Over-saturation is what I believe what causes certain subgenres to take a dip in popularity (if that's the right word here). Let's take the underground scene in the US today, as super technical death metal, atmospheric black metal and stoner/doom metal bands seem to be everywhere in the underground. For me personally, I feel it's a breath of fresh air to see a small resurgence of bands that play more in the likes of Riot/Riot V, Manilla Road, HammerFall, Running Wild and early Sanctuary. It shows that, at least here in the US, that Power/Speed/Traditional Heavy Metal isn't as cheesy and corny as one might think and can produce some really great quality bands if given the chance it needs (i.e. Visigoth, Vanlade, Silver Talon, Unleash The Archers, Holy Grail, Striker, etc).

You don't always have to come up with something new because there's only so many themes and topics that can be addressed in the world. I think the thing is presentation and execution that can take cliched stuff and still make it interesting and fresh each time while still retaining it's familiarity.
As for your suggestion about sci fi, plenty of bands have done that before. Though there is a sub-genre of metal called cyber metal which focuses most of it's lyrical themes around cyberpunk literature and culture. The sub-genre mainly gets it's influence from the bands Strapping Young Lad, Meshuggah, Sybreed, and Fear Factory. Though it does mix in a lot of melodic death metal influences, industrial, atmospheric, EBM/aggrotech, and even black metal sometimes. I'd highly recommend checking out bands and projects like Illidiance, Sympuls-E, Neurotech, Cypecore, Assimilate, and Black Comedy for starters. Mechina is also a great band if you're looking for more epic stuff themed around sci fi in the vein of Warhammer 40k, Mass Effect, Halo, and other related franchises.

Well let’s face it, whenever a genre makes it into the mainstream it’s bound to die out sooner or later. Like Hair and Nu Metal (which I like both) they were just fads of the their time. Sungenres like death and black metal are for more of a “niche” audience. In other words, I don’t think Mayhem or Deicide are ever gonna be competing against Nicki Minaj for the number 1 spot on the billboard. As far as thrash goes, it’s not really a huge genre like it used to be. Mostly due to the fact that, when it came out people loved it because there had never been anything quite like it. But none of the newer bands are getting all that much attention. But you definitely can’t say thrash was a fad. Keep it loud and heavy people 🤘

  • @IIIININ9IIII

Psychedelic Death Metal needs to become a thing. I've been trying to find bands that fit that profile for a long time now with very little luck. Plenty come close, but are either overly technical, too mellow, or just too far one way or the other to be considered both Psychedelic AND Death Metal... I'm imagining a band(s) that combines elements of great death metal bands (Behemoth, Dying Fetus, early Morbid Angel, Death, etc), with maybe a tiny hint of tech death (Beyond Creation, Gorod, Obscura, Inferi, etc), but also have that spaced out, weird, almost atmospheric/visual type of thing going on that you hear from more progressive rock/metal or classic psychedelic rock/metal (Pink Floyd, Tool, Mastodon, Black Sabbath, Hendrix, etc). It sounds kinda crazy, but I want music that has that death metal "getting-completely-pulverized-into-the-earth" sound, but then transfers to a more psychedelic "warping-your-pulverized-remains-into-outer-space-approaching-a-black-hole" sorta sound, and vice versa lmao. If bands like this exist, I want to hear them, so any suggestions are welcome.

I think that we’ll probably see some new subgenres. Nothing more extreme or brutal than death/black metal or heavier than doom metal, but I think that we’ll see some new lighter genres. In the same way that Black Sabbath kind of was different than all the other metal bands of the time and led to doom, I think that some of those bands out there that kind of don’t fit into the current genres may end up with something new, like Meshuggah and djent. Maybe there will be some new genre that’s like Rammstein or something (probably not a good example, but the first band off the top of my head that doesn’t really fit into an established genre that well).

What gets me is that as time moves on, people start stripping the pioneers of these sub-genres, of their credibility. You see this with Black Sabbath, Venom, Metallica, Possessed, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. Kids saying Possessed weren't death metal because they didn't sound like Cannibal Corpse lol. Venom doesn't have to be similar to Norwegian bands to be black metal. They predate them! Kill Em All was thrash in 1983. Just because Demolition Hammer are more brutal doesn't mean KEA stopped being thrash.

The birth of a new subgenre of music is not about a lyrical topic. It is about a new sound, new way how the music is played. The band experiments with it's sound a little bit and it could lead into a creation of a new wave of music. Kinda like with Black Sabbath, They didn't just said one day "Let's make this new kind of music and call it Heavy Metal". They just playedin their own weird way and music genre we all love just accidentally was born. From recent years, the only example I can think about is DJENT. Whatever you like it or not ( I personally don't like it) Meshuggah's style of playing was new and so crazy back then, that bunch of bands said "Wow, that's cool, we want to sound like that.".

Excellent and thought provoking video as usual BMW. 'Hair Metal' pretty much killed metal for me back in the 80s. It wasn't until much, much later when I finally discovered serious European metal bands that I became a metalhead. I must admit I didn't like Kiss back then either and thought they were manufactured, gimmicky and not far removed from pop music. I like to ignore the sub-genres these days and give everything at least one listen. Cheers.

I think metal still has potential to change and create new sonic palettes to create music with. I think as technology changes music and people change the music can change too. The only issue is that the majority of metal heads are older and want music like what they were listening to as teenagers and young adults, which means a lot of newer bands lose the attention of an already small pool of potential listeners. Metal is slowly becoming like jazz in that regard and metal will have to change, despite the elitists and purists to continue to capture the attention of younger listeners. I don't think it's possible for any of the already established subgenres to die off because they are not commercial to nearly the same extent as a lot of genres that have died and because in a lot of ways they are timeless. In the same way that the Blues speak to people, I think metal can too

I think for new genres to be born, at least ones that I'd like, you have to think outside the box. It has to be more than a lyrical theme or a stylistic theme. Anybody can make fucking elf metal, or cowboy metal, or whatever the fuck metal, but what we need to find a way to reinvent the genre from the ground up, like black metal did, like death metal did.

It's funny, today I was thinking about slam. I thought of how 'slam' is not really a subgenre, but rather and umbrella term for brutal death/tech death/deathcore bands who incorporate certain elements (slam riffs, guttural vocals, etc.) into their music. Very similarly in that respect to how the word 'djent' is used. It started with Suffocation, who invented the slam riff, and who also pioneered guttural vocal styles (Frank Mullen). Then Devourment popularized brutal death and slam. Now we have bands like Ingested and Within Destruction who mix elements of brutal death with deathcore. But I don't think 'slam' on its own is really a subgenre. Most bands who define themselves as that are really either brutal death metal, deathcore, or sometimes tech death. Haha see how super micro-specific death metal can be?

  • @pietrayday9915

An early factor in the growth of metal subgenres was the local metal scenes - the Swedish or Tampa Bay death metal scenes, for example, or Norwegian Black metal; this isn't as important, I'll venture, now that the internet has made it a lot more difficult for a local scene to evolve in relative isolation before suddenly appearing in public. But let's face it: THE biggest factor is just marketing: subgenres are largely just the gimmicks used to sell the second-rank, also-ran bands that follow in the footsteps of actual innovators and pioneers.

First of all: the real genres aren't defined by the topic, but by the sound. That's why pirate metal or vegetarian grindcore for example are made up genres. Pirate metal is basically pirate themed metal (could be any genre but from what I know it's mostly folk, which makes sense) and vegetarian grindcore is just grindcore talking about vegetarianism and how people are awful for eating animals etc, etc. While in real subgenres, the adjective defines the sound, not the topic which the band is talking about. So for example dissonant death metal IS a real subgenre,'cause it describes how the music sounds and it sounds,well...dissonant :v And since you're asking for sci fi metal,I could give you an example of sci fi THEMED metal, from different genres,'cause different bands in different genres have their own view on how to give their sci fi themed songs this sci fi vibe. There are going to be some similarities of course, but there's no overall pattern on how to give your song a sci fi vibe. While at the same time there is a pattern for making dissonant death metal, which is,well...using the dissonance.
So my favourite sci fi themed band of all time is Artificial Brain. And it's probably the most emotional death metal band you can possibly find. You'll get it once you listen to a track Estranged From Orbit for example (or any of their LP tracks, really).
The other examples, would be: Gigan (dissonant death metal),Vektor (progressive thrash metal),The Beast Of Nod (progressive death metal)
