A possible problem here is that elephants are happiest as part of a group, especially considering this elephant is female. What we really have to consider is that would this animal be happier in the wild with a herd or in captivity with or without other elephants. In my estimation, the least amount of suffering and the most amount of happiness can be achieved with a herd in good captive conditions. As for the other options, its up for debate. I can only say that some folks don’t consider the amount of suffering experienced by animals in the wild and make appeals to nature that are at the very least questionable

Stick or no stick, elephants are not meant to live with human families, they're meant to live with other elephants on a LOT of land. Even if they're orphans, they should be put into wild life nursery refugees for baby elephants. I can't believe this woman is fighting for families to be able to own elephants. She may be very kind to her elephant, but many others won't be. Not to mention, how many would buy a baby elephant, then get rid of it later because they're a lot of work, this is something you can't do. You need to be there 24/7 when you have an elephant. The babies can die of heartbreak if you leave them for just a couple days, even if there are other people there caring for them when you're gone. Fighting for humans to own elephants like dogs... what a ridiculous thing to fight for.

I’m saying that it’s funny how, on any given video about and animal in captivity, there’s practically a war zone in the comment section with people on both sides making claims about the animal’s wellbeing with no acknowledgement of the fact that they could be wrong.
Some animals are better off in captivity. But many more are better off in their natural environments. It goes both ways.
But honestly, I was just a joke. Not really meant to be taken seriously.

@Reid Holdman - the truth is that no one really knows if this particular elephant is actually loving or at least liking being where she’s at, part of a circus and receiving commands she has to perform to entertain a bunch of over simplistic humans, instead of being back where she was born enjoying freedom and other elephants and animals’ company for that matter...

When you meet them you can feel you are dealing with something very old. I was a kid in petting zoo when I met my first adult elephant. it doesn't matter. Elephants are social animals but that doesn't mean they have to be social with other elephants. As long as they are social with some group that can provide the care and attention they need, they are satisfied. A family of humans is just as good as a family of elephants. And seeing as how that elephant performs in a circus, it likely gets to interact with other elephants fairly regularly.

I have been working in South East Asia (as a photographer) for around 40 years, so I have had a few interaction with elephants over the years. In the jungles, rivers, working in logging camps, market places (were people donate food to walk under the elephant) and sometimes at wildlife areas and conservation camps. I personally think that elephants like having a job, and really don't mind some hard work every once in a while. As long as they are treated with respect, by the humans they work with.

Well, it might be an amazing animal, but an animal nonetheless. Absolute trust like: "I can put my head under his/hers foot and know nothing bad will happen or playful playing etc", are stuff for the movies or news horror stories.
You treat these majestic beasts with the caution, love and respect they deserved if owned. It doesn't mean in the slightest that said person loves or cares for the animals any less if is "enforcing" rules/boundaries, possible scolding, being strict, be in control etc, because we all can guess what can happen in merely a split sec. (we have read about domesticate house dogs with no biting tendencies, biting/damage faces of young kings) etc. Some case were with provocation, were others more in line with unintentional/accident most likely 'cause adult supervision lacking.
And mostly those were dogs on leashes too. Another example: Let' take for example an even temperament, no non- violent dog(Hint: GR or LR). Even those some-active large, friendly, non aggressive type of dogs, can always by accident an accident, be it by playing with kids and 'cause of the power and large size, situations like that occur often..
So, the woman in the video she might even love or care even more than most because she actually see those animals as to how they really are and not what we wanted them to be/mean for us.
Even in dwindling numbers, some mothers even to this day provide some form of "physical" disciplines in similar means like the woman in the video but more inline with current human societies standards lets say. E,g the iconic shoes throw or chase with it and wooden soup spoons. Kinda funny unless you are on the receiving side.
So? Are those two mothers trying to discipline their kids(in no violent way mostly and for a good cause at least to them) and for sure without any malice, do those actions imply they love or care for their kids any less?
Even with the the few exceptions here and there which aren't even worth even mentioning, the answer is No.
Back on topic about the Bullhook which is already banned in several US sates, while been considered quite inhumane by mostly activist ppl.
I admit I didn't notice it at first. Only here in the comments. I have no prior knowledge of the Lauryn Murray/Lady Essex the Elephant arrangment but if the bullhook isn't used or even abusively at at, which seems th case to me, well, considering Lady Essex's Circus training/upbringing, that bullhook might be there, just because Lady Essex learned/knows to behave with that in sight/around.?

It's actually a very good reason and excellent example of why we should keep elephants in human care. When a person can take care of an elephant, they can put the elephant's needs first and give it an amazing life. Elephants in the "wild" (a place that doesn't exist any more) are struggling. As long as the animal is properly cared for, there's no reason to bash anyone owning an animal, including an elephant.

Bullhooks are actually called "the Ankus", "Takaw", "Guide" or "Elephant Guide" and it's a husbandry tool used with elephants for thousands of years - It's used to guide the elephant. All animals that are with people have to have some sort of husbandry tools - Dogs have leashes, Horses have reins, etc. Elephants are very large and smart. The guide is merely an extension of the handler's arm and uses touch or direction cues to guide the elephant. Sadly yes, in the hands of unprofessional people, it can be misused - but so can other animal husbandry tools. Don't judge. She obviously doesn't mistreat this elephant.

Regardless of what animals activists say, your elephant is safer in her environment with you than she would be in the wild (from predators, poachers, everything) she’s loved, she clearly loves her human family too, she probably receives vet care where she wouldn’t in the wild, she gets unlimited food, pets, snuggles, etc.
I’m just really failing to see the problem here.

The stick with the small rounded hook at the end is a tool every Mahut uses. Its purpose is to grab the elephant by the ear if the Mahut feels he/she is getting stressed or scared (for some reason it appeases the elephant). Some assholes use it to beat the elephant but that's not for what it was made for. Kind of like a prong collar for dog, it looks bad but it's not a torture instrument if properly used ;)

"The only way certain species are going to continue is if we reach out and actually help them."
This woman is completely right. When it comes to elephants, they are very social creatures like us. It may be, in the future, that the only way to save the species is to start keeping them tamed as parts of households or circuses. Integrating them may be the best way to save the species.
They're being poached in their natural habitats and attempts at replenishing their population in the wild are failing because they don't reproduce as much as other species (same problem with Pandas really). It looks like elephants are much safer in circuses, with loving families like this one, and amongst human populations as work animals.

First, the elephant didn't seem bothered with picking up the stick to give it to her owner, I get that's a weak argument but it's something, also I've got more.
Second, I've had horse riding lessons in the past, learning how to use my legs and the reins to tell a horse where to go and how fast, etc, and me and my 2 or 3 classmates always had these little rubber sticks called crops or crop whips, they're pretty small and in using them, you smack the horses hind (not too hard) to encourage it to move faster in riding. It doesn't hurt the horse, even if it seems like it might, the most it'll be is a strong tap on your own skin with your finger, maybe a tiny sting, but thats it.
The elephants owner is likely using the same thing, as like horses, elephants have pretty tough muscles and skin, or skin at least, the elephant's fine, as far as i know. Its not metal, just rubber. Against very tough elephant skin.
Also you can do a lot worse to an elephant that just hit it with metal.

    • @Billygoattee

yall pretend like a little human and a metal stick could oppress an elephant... You think the elephant could even feel that stick if you hit it? That stick isnt disciplinary...

Sil3ntAng3l using a whip (that’s the name of the stick you are talking about) to discipline a horse, it’s abuse my friend. I actually stopped riding horses because of it. Everyone says “you don’t hurt the horse because of its thick skin”. Well... guess what?? Everything to control an animal to do whatever it is that we want them to do, it’s called abuse. We need to understand that animals can feel, think and react when they feel fear. Ready to read your answer!

    • @renatanavarro1342
      @renatanavarro1342 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nick Lutz First of all, the elephant shouldn’t be with her, the elephant should be on its NATURAL HABITAT. Second.... of course they feel. Just because you think that, it doesn’t mean it’s true. Third... it’s important to read a book sometimes. Maybe about elephants?? Elephants are one of the most sensitive and smart animals on the planet. They feel EVERYTHING. Either physical pain or emotional pain.
