Wow, that was like a wine tasting test party! Some had better bell but not crash, and vice versa, and everything in between! Need to listen to this over and over in order to discern the overall best options, but I still have opinions on all of them. Thank you for doing this!
Paiste dark energy and dark crisp habe the widest and most complex yet pleasing sound to my ear. The first few Zildjians sound very generic and dead to me. Perfect video! Big respect for the effort
Zildjian K Heavy, Zildjijan A Medium, Sabian HH Raw Bell Dry, Paiste 2002 Ride...The A Medium Ride has the best balance of those I listed as my top favorite by experience.
Great comparo! Many heavier rides sounded pretty cold here, which wasn't a surprise. Many of the thinner/warmer cymbals lacked a good and present bell, some pretty much completely. I guess it's just physics tho. The Dark Energy did all quite pleasantly imo. Cheers!
I have to admit, that 900 absolutely SMOKED almost all of its higher priced brethren. I thought that overall, the best Paiste ride was the "Rythmatist". I think that ride is Stewart Copeland's signature model which would certainly explain why it sounded so good.
Nice collection you have. I'm partial to your Meinl Byzance Dark 24" Big Apple Dark Ride only because I have a 26" R&D that's supposed to be a Big Apple. I don't know, but I love it! Thanks and Blessings, I enjoyed this very much!
The 22" K Constantinople med thin low ride is the butteriest ride I own/ have ever played. Love the K Cons, but the bell on Copelands "Rhythmatist" is so dope.
It's amazing that some of those rides have such poor stick definition. That K Heavy is a beauty. Paiste Rude Reign is my dream ride. Rocking a Paiste Signature Dark Heavy Ride similar to the K in sound. Great video!
Choosing the right ride has been the biggest challenge I’ve faced on the drums. Finding the byzance sand ride (not featured) made all the headache worth it.
My Big criticism is, when you’re hitting the bell you hit it up so high you’re practically hitting the felt! to get a good strong bell sound you need to hit as low as possible, right at the transition between the bell and the bow of the cymbal, that will give you the strongest bell sound!!
i guess that i’m used to my main 2oo2 ride. the only way to produce a good bell sound is at the top of the bell. it’s because of the form of that bell (not distinct)
Man that Big Apple just keeps kicking ass every video I see it in! I love the big, hammered plate rides except for the difficulty in getting a good wash out of them when really laying in, but that one seems to be able to sing more than most and when you can make that lower-pitched wash work, it really adds a massive texture to any rock track. I'm thinking I'd better give one a go.
A lot of the zildjians had a great wash ride, but paiste had a better bell. I'm a huge paiste fanboy yet imo Bosphorus killed it for overall versatility in each ride. They were all supremely expressive.
One thing that was weird in this demo was that I couldn't hear a clear ping from the 2002. That hasn't been my experience in the past. One thing that's underrated about the Zildjian (non-Constantinople) K, the A, and the Avedis, is that they all have a really clear ping on the bow, a nice bell, and a good, albeit slightly clangy, crash. The Paiste Colorsound also seems to have it all.
Just suggestions.. All were too pinggy & were kind-of too loud for an acoustic small to medium venue gig. You should look into K Custom Dark 20 for sure it will do the job for as well as a 22 because of its lower tone of a 20 inch ride in the market. Many of the cymbals I've tried either would make my right ear bleed or I would have to wear a headphone to block out the noise coming out of the ride patterns hearing it raw. That's just my opinion.
@@arnonle I'm a hard hitter when it comes to cymbals, tbh I try to go for quieter ones on purpose because I prefer the snare and toms to cut through. It's all preference 😜
It's funny how we have to weed through so many hats, crashes,&rides to get the sound we like. I'm never completely satisfied with my drum or cymbal sound. Vintage slingerland, Zildjian & paiste
@@raymondkolbinski3033 that is so true. In a way it is a good thing in that we are never complacent, always looking for the perfect sound. I find that the perfect sound depends on the assignment. Kinda slim pickings for sabian don’t you think? Although that raw bell ride would probably be my choice out of all of these. Nice dry stick ping with a loud and angry sounding bell… great for blast-beats and the closest ride to my personal choice the sabian 22” HH powerbell ride. Very similar cymbal to the raw bell although it’s bell is even bigger and louder and angrier.
@@arnonle No worries my man. I just love my Sabians and I feel like it’s a company that gets shafted from time to time. Obviously I know this wasn’t your fault and I’m not just being a blind asshole right now.
Im not a zildjian nazi or stuff i own other brands as well like istanbul or sabian but in this video you can see why zildjian cymbals are so popular to my ear they are definitely superior. But I guess its a matter of taste, i was also surprised by the bosphorus really clean and bright sounds never got the pleasure to play one yet tho ive only seen them in videos.
Big Cymbals? The only Big One was the 24! 20-22 is pretty much standard. Where's all the 24's, 26's and 28's? Why only the 4 Companies? There's a dozen other Cymbal Companies that make incredible (some better than the 4) sounding Cymbals.
If that is a Zildjian HeavyRide, where is the distinctive Heavy Ping???? Sounds like a gong. All of them do. All swell and wash. Bring back the Zildjian Heavy Ping of the70's. It cut through like the triangle at the back of the symphony with a steady, non-swelling roar that never built up. A ride cymbal should project clarity of rythym with a quiet wash.

I couldn't hear the ping. It hasn't been a problem with any 2002 I've heard in real life, but with this cymbal in this demo, the ping sounds a bit muted.
SO many videos of ride cymbals made show them crashing. Why? I have crash cymbals that crash beautifully. I want a ride to ride on - a specialist not an all rounder. why don't more manufacturers focus on the ride properties of a ride cymbal? The blue one was nice though.
lets say that you have a 16" and 18" crashes. if you pick the right ride, you can also get a 20"-22" crash. and if you pick fast crashes, a ride cymbal will allow you to play a nice long crash-ride in the background.
Most of these sound like crap to me. Also, why is it whenever there is a ride demo they never hit the bell with the tip of the stick. I don’t need to hear what these sound like being crashed...they aren’t crash cymbals they are rides..play them as such. Play the bell with the tip, play the bell with the neck, and play the bow with the tip.
