I totally have that same criteria for a ride. Good stick definition, good wash / crash and good bell. I've only let one ride get away that I wish I had kept. VERSATILITY is also important when choosing a good ride.

Great video, really informative. Now if you could do a follow up video on "how to convince your wife that a new ride cymbal is a household essential" that'd be great... 😂

I’m not sure about “needs.” A drummer like me pounding out twos and fours playing covers in a party rock bar band can probably get by with just one. My Todd Sucherman HH Sabian ride can do it all for me. That said, variety is the spice of life. I have a half dozen or so just to keep me interested and entertained.

As a beginner drummer I have found it difficult to understand where different ride sounds and each of their individual dynamics sit within the rest of the kit. This video was very helpful.

Man, that's a seriously well rounded, versatile collection of rides. It goes to show, there really is no substitute for years of dedicated, practical experience. Not _just_ for your level of playing but for your knowledge of the instrument, the development of your ears and the ability to identify and choose the right tools to have in your arsenal. It's always come through to me in your videos that beyond being a really tasty drummer and great teacher, you have great _ears_ and really know what you're hearing and how to listen. Obviously, no one would want you anywhere but on that drum throne but if you instead had and put the same level of passion and dedication into coming up in studios and working behind a recording console, you would have been a _TOP_ tier recording and mixing engineer.
Anyhow, my favorite was that 21" Dark Energy. What tone and balance _that_ beauty has. I've gotta score one to have in my studio.

Man.... I wish you were doing this video 30 years ago when I was shopping for a ride cymbal. I now realize I only have 2 out of 3 qualities for a ride that I should have. Bright bell, good stick definition, but kind of a crappy crash. Thank you for enlightening me.

You know, the choice of what type of rude cymbal to invest in is just as important as choosing a vehicle to drive. Versatile rides are the way to go either way in my opinion 😉 They all sound great! That 21" master dry really pulled at my heart strings ☺️

Love me my Paistes. I have my 502 ride me mums gifted me for Xmas when I was sixteen, 22 yrs later it still sounds amazing and has no damage. In recent years I scored a 20” signature power ride, used at a guitar center. Unknowingly it was the ride of my dreams. Powerful, sharp, piercing bell. But after watching this, I want me one of them signature thins!

  • @GringoLoco1980

Yeah, the stick is surprisingly sharp for how thin it is. Just gotta be a little mindful of how much you lean into it if it's not tight between the felts.

Great video Rob. I can see why you have them all. They are all fantastic and each has a niche. The masters dry 21 surprised me the most. I was not expecting that sound from a Paiste. If I could only have one of these it would be dark energy 21. It has the sparkle of a 602 with controlled overtones that wlll sit in a mix. A true fusion cymbal.

I went with the Paiste 22“ Masters Dark Ride back then. My logic was: I’d rather go with a washy ride than a dry ride, as I can always put some dampening (e.g. tape) on it, but I can’t add wash to a dry ride.

  • @MrRezRising

Had mine since '87, bought at Mannys, very proud of the oval shaped hole in the middle.
A Sabian, bell like crystal, so many levels of sound, I picked it based on my ears and two ppl: Peart for its 'presence', and Bozzio for the definition and mellow attack (really, it was Bozzio on Robbie Robertson's _American Roulette_ that stuck with me. "She had the walk, the look, the talk...')
    Fun vid, Rob!

I have been looking for a Ride for years. It seems every one i have seen tried A customs, K customs, Meinal, Pastie, it has been a nightmare, i play groove rock and EVERY ride i tried for a long time gets so harsh and hisses like your smashing a china or crash.
So for the last 5 years… I have been playing a Stagg CX. Which sounds surprisingly good. Its warm i can lay into it during solos and it maintains its smoothness.
Then i was out trying rides and found a cymbals i will never be able to afford, but holy hell is it smooth the Sabian AAX FREQ and my god. Its out of this world

Out of the 3 characteristics of a ride cymbal, the 1 main thing that I look for in a ride is a strong cutting bell. The 2nd thing is stick definition. I’d prefer a medium weighted ride in a 21” or 22” . No smaller than 21 inches or no bigger than 22 inches. The Formula 602 Modern Essentials & Signature Dark Energy MK l would be my 2 choices.

Check out the 22" Dark Energy MKII when you get a chance. That's my choice for the bell/crash/stick definition combo you're talking about. It's a freak of nature cymbal, I can crash it and go right back to riding it and the ping on the bow is right there. It never gets overly washy to the point you loose the stick sound.

My current favorite ride is Sabian AA 20 Rock. I buy it used dirt cheap, ugly but perfect from mechanical point of view. Try it and like it so much so clean it, polish, restore logo. Why I like it? This is: have solid ping for metal and rock songs, still musical enough for light context, have nice powerfull bell, have some wash when you ding it close to edge, and this is compact and weight only 2,7 kg! I replaced my big heavy rail 22 metal-x ride and my back said me thanx. I also like my byzance 22 sand crash ride but only for recordings. In live it can be used only as crash IMO. Also want to check 21 A Sweet Ride and 21K Crash-Ride. Searching for crashable ride with good ping is so exhausting for wallet and nerves. This is another reason why I just surrender and choose 20 AA Rock as default ride and close that question for now, focusing on crash cymbals.

Rob thank you so much again for this awesome video! How would you compare the 602 with the 24" giant beat multi ride cymbal? I currently have the 22" Powerslave (the master of the ping by the way) but I am now looking for that washy ride that would tell that story that never ends 😊

That 602ME is superb, as is the 20" light ride. A 22" of the light ride would be amazing.
I'm a Zildjian guy and have an old 22" 70s A medium that is my all rounder but I have a 22" K Con Renaissance that's you'd love, it's dark, light and has an unlathed bell which really cuts plus it crashes well.
Got far too many rides myself and mainly use the two above.

The Zildjian A Medium ride is a standard, all around ride for me. My favorite one was a 20" I bought about 20 years ago. It was stolen several years ago, and I cannot find another one exactly like it. I think it was slightly lighter than standard, and it had a slight hint of trashiness; it crashed beautifully. I have several recordings of it, and I still go back and listen to them just to hear my favorite ride cymbal. I may have to have one custom lathed someday.
Anyways, I'd love to hear your 22" Medium ride. I'm thinking about going to bigger rides, but I'm not a very tall person. 20" rides seem to be the sweet spot for my more compact setup.

@@genericsomething my 22 A medium is like the 22" Avedis Dark ride sound wise. Warm, nice controllable wash, good belly and crashes well. Just what you want a ride to sound like you can use for everything.
Thankfully someone aged it and played it in for 40 odd years before I got it as an eBay gamble. It's one of the hollow logos.
I had an original 20 K Custom that like an idiot I swapped for a 22" 2002 heavy ride. Man I wish I'd have kept that.
Nothing worse than having gear stolen. I had my cymbals stolen in 2004 but by a miracle I got them back. I hope you find something that sounds like the one you had stolen. Try the Avedis line.

@@hardcoreyorkie I had an original 20" K Custom, too!. I sold it because I wanted something else. I'm probably going to get a K Medium ride, but I haven't decided the size yet.

Can you plz do a video on knowing what fill grouping count to do when playing with certain grooves & time signatures? Beginner drummer here so I dnt know all the terminology but I’m mean for example fill groups for songs that are 2count, 3 count, 4 count, etc.

Wow! Extremely timely video Rob as I’m currently cross shopping most of those ride cymbals and the 22” 2002 ride! If you could only choose two of those rides to have as your only two ride cymbals which ones would you choose?

I am a Zildjian guy at heart. In a long battle with myself, I finally chose the Zildjian 23 inch A Custom Sweet Ride after playing a 22” Zildjian of some kind since 1975. The bell finally cracked. Would love to hear your thoughts on the 23” A Custom Sweet Ride if you are familiar. I only play in the studio now. The sustain is a bit much, but I love it.

I'd love my paiste2002 med.16,17,18 and but I would also like to get a set of darker cymbals like the paiste sig. Traditional crashes ( 17, 18 an the 20 in ride.....)

I bought this ride a year and a half ago the Modern Essentials 602 which is I guess one that Vinny Coliuta developed with Paiste. I don't think there's a better ride on the market then the Modern Essentials 602-22-in I've never felt so comfortable with a ride cymbal.
