PKS Knives - Made for the Field

  • PKS Knives are unapologetically made for the field. PKS Knives aren't wall hangers or bedazzled with lots of bells and whistles. These are knives that are meant to be used and abused. 1095 High Carbon Steel, 90 degree spine, Scandinavian grind. Steel width varies depending on the knife design and intent. Dave Canterbury is a survival expert that is not only extremely skilled, but is also a lifelong student of past pioneers, history and tried and true methods of craftsmanship and design. A "Cool Looking" knife is fine, but a useful knife designed for specific tasks (that is also cool) is far and away superior. We're not about frosting and sprinkles, we focus on the cake itself. The true substance of what makes a knife special. Grab a PKS Knife and you will know out of the gate that these knives were designed with you and your tasks top of mind. Made in the USA at the Pathfinder Knife Shop in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I own a lot of knives and my go-to is the Scorpion. Its "dirty by design" makes it so you'll use it and yet it's still elegant and good looking. A confession here: I've pimped it out. To put it bluntly it trumps all the other knives because of its utilitarian bombproof nature.

I've found that very, very few mass produced blades come close to meeting the minimum expectations I have. That said, I studied under a master bladesmith and began making my own knives. First I did stock-removal blades to learn to ebb-and-flow of a blades planes, curves, and lines, before learning to forge from scratch. Now almost 10 years on I still enjoy my craft.
A bit long winded I know, but I say all this because I believe anyone that wants to learn, should. I am a big fan of Mr. Canterbury and his work as a survivalist and firmly believe he knows exactly what to expect from a blade and find his enthusiasm in supporting and providing quality blades admirable.

Great knives. Tops Tracker in 1095 has been in use in the sopping wet PNW mountains processing firewood and getting pitch wood from rotten stumps since 2008, hasn’t died yet. Have used it for pounding tent stakes etc. Very much comparable to the Mountaineer knife. I can tell that one’s a winner for survival. I can’t bear to use the Red Scorpion Six WSK for these tasks. Cheers 🍻

These are quality knives. They're not good because they are affordable, they're good because they're friggin' good!
They're simple, and very VERY close to the knife designs used hundreds of years ago. I get an odd sense of being connected to those times, using mine. Plus, they taught me that high quality didn't necessarily mean high price.
If your considering one, roll the dice. I swear you will not be disappointed.

I own 4 PKS knives. Two are discontinued, the Grizzly and the Black Bear. The Black Bear being one my most favorite knives in my entire collection of knives as a sub 5" blade second only to my Bark River Cub EDC. Both the Grizzly and the Black Bear are excellent knives, mine have walnut scales. If the PKS was to ever produce these two models again with canvas micarta scales, I would buy two more just because. That’s how impressed I am with these two models. I also own the Mountaineer and the Wildcat, both are excellent knives and they both have canvas micarta scales. And when Dave says the the knives are guaranteed, that is very much the case. I had some minor issues with the blades of the Grizzly and the Black Bear when I purchased them, I contacted SRO and they replaced both knives no hassle whatsoever. The leather sheaths that they offer are very good quality and well worth the price. Buy PKS knives with confidence that you will receive a quality product, money well spent. Many thanks to Dave and the folks at SRO and PKS.

I just loved checking out recommendations and trying new things tell I found what I really liked . I gave most away to friends or if me and my kids were camping and I met a cool kid and the dad was cool with it I’d give them away to them to keep the outdoors alive in a kid that may not be able to afford it or didn’t know what a good knife was . My son and I narrowed it down to a CRKT hatchet and BK9 for larger jobs with a Laplander . I carry a scorpion hd or the survival from Dave on belt . He likes his TOPS B.O.B but we both have the camp campaign for small jobs like cooking or whittling spoons etc . He also usually has his bk14 for EDC and I run a ZT560 for my EDC now . I have all models in the PKS line up. I really like them all, however depending on the task at hand might choose one over another.
Currently my favorite everday belt blade for outdoor bushcrafting goes to my Camp and Trail of which I own two. One having an ash handle the other in curly maple. For my living history impression the curly maple gets the nod.
Next week I was invited to do some living history event for the Alabama historical museum and yes a couple of my PKS blades will accompany me and used in demonstrating primitive fire making. I have a sizable amount of camp craft gear from Self Reliance Outfitters and the products never fail to be both functional and dependable over my 39 years doing living history / camp craft.

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@iruwild I don't know anything about it. It's probably fine and there's plenty of technically better steels out there, but eventually enough becomes enough, after which you're not getting any real benefit from spending more to have it. 1095 has the right balance of affordability, toughness and edge retention for a knife that doesn't particularly need to be razor sharp in the first place. If I had to nitpick it, though, it would be for the edge retention... and that ugly black coating everybody feels like they have to put on it.
It'll surely rust, but only if you neglect it, at least for most people. A lot of others need something more stain resistant, but for those of us who don't 1095 is very hard to beat.

About 6 yrs ago I bought a pks grizzly with red and black macarta handles. It came in the white boxes. The day it arrived I was opening it up and I dropped it. The edge of the knife hit the edge of a metal ashtray. My heart almost stopped when I realized I damaged it. I thought it chipped. I put on my reader glasses and realized no chip the edge just rolled. 5 minutes on a bench stone and it came right out can't even tell I did that. That should speak of the high quality products with outstanding heat treating. The only bad thing I can say bad about pks knives is they discontinued my second favorite knife. The grizzly my favorite is the mora garberg a little more comfortable edc woods carry. My grizzly I scout carry on my backpack or sometimes on my chest pack. I would highly recommend any pks knife or the mora garberg. I prefer full tang so the garberg is the only mora I own or recommend but I have heard good things about the other moras for a budget starter knife.

I have a couple of Jeff White knives. And I have a PKS knife that I consider a rarity ( _though I may be incorrect about that_ ).
Why no mention of the PLSK1 Pathfinder or the PLS2 Pathfinder 2? THOSE are the knives that "started it all" .
AND they are both excellent knives. I understand Dave doesn't make them. But does anyone else here think they deserve a mention if for no other reason than to respect the history of Dave's designs? No disrespect to the Scorpion. But it is not the seed of Pathfinder knives. The PLSK1 Pathfinder is.
I carry my Mountain Lion at least 3 days a week and my EESE4 for the rest. I keep Mora Companions _everywhere_. ( _every car, truck, side-by-side, 4 wheeler, toolbox, tackle-box, glovebox, haversack, and backpack I own has a Mora Companion in it or on it - I bought them in bulk for a screaming price_ ). I'd buy one of every knife Dave makes if it wouldn't put me in the dog house with my better half. But when I come across an original PLSK1 Pathfinder with the old logo on one side and the Blind Horse logo on the other side, I'm buying it. There is something that is simultaneously rough AND elegant about that design.
    But what do I know.

I agree it's almost as if they're trying to pretend it doesn't exist. I think I prefer it over any of these

Ahhhhhhh the legendary PLSK1. You find one, you're buying it? Not if I see it first. 😉
      What an awesome design.

I have a feeling they didn't, Shawn Kelly comes across as very selfish. Also the way he treats his subscribers on his you tube channel is disgusting!
Edit : I unsubscribed from Corps channel because he always complains and blames his viewers they don't watch his videos enough ughhh. Would much rather watch Dave do real videos without the complaining, keep up the good work Dave.

Doesn’t sound like they did. You can see the tidbits in the videos. Hate it when the parents argue.

Since neither refers to the other by name I think they may have parted on something a less than good terms. Kelly has always wanted to be on his own and Dave and the Pathfinder School was maybe a launching pad.

Dave C. Is definitely the humble professional, Mr. Kelly has been a whiny bitch for a while…like a few years now…Corporal’s Corner was my introduction to TH-cam and I still subscribe to his channel but yeah, I think he stepped on his dick leaving Dave.

@@neilmcphee1554I dont think Shawn is selfish more or less just really busy.. i ask Dave questions that he doesnt answer and then i remind myself he has 6 kids, grandkids, a wife, pets/animals business/s to run property to maintain, videos to make, traveling etc etc... im surprised he has time to take a dump...from what i hear these guys are super cool in person.. God bless :)

I own 3 PKS knives, they as good or better than any other knife that I own (I own quite a few) they are my favorites. I do beat on them a little, and they hold their edge and are easy to resharpen usually with just a strop. If Horace Kephart were around today, he would carry a PKS knife (as long as he could get it from Abercrombie & Fitch).

Brought one of last lot the corporals corner edition camp and trail knives. Have not really used it, only for the reason I find is the handle feels a little smallish to me, other than that it's a nice knife from the bit I have used it. Just feels like a extra half or full inch a little fatter handle would be good.
Do you know if there will be another run of bowie knife again.

Just buy the terava scrama my friend, ive owned one for 5 years and beat the hell out of it. The 80-crv2 kicks 1095 all day. You wont find a better value knife with an amaizing heat treat like the scrama. American made is very expensive thats a given. The nordics know their seax designs, they invented it!. 😂
