While the traditional "lets play" format may not be right for you, with off the cuff comments and improvised jokes, I think it would be great to see a pre-recorded playthrough, where you take your time to gather your thoughts in each section, and talk in depth about the technology, the gameplay and how things like guidance are done in a given section, and generally play the game the way a developer or an analyst would, complete with pauses to focus on certain things. It wouldn't be a playthrough someone watches to be entertained or to watch someone do silly things in a game. It would be designed specifically as an informative analysis of the game from start to finish, in chronological order, and would give people insight into the mind of a level designer and player, and may give people ideas and understanding that they wouldn't otherwise have figured out on their own. More of a "let's examine" than a let's play. This would be somewhat unique content to watch, and I was thinking of starting the same thing. It would likely be more interesting to make as well, as you would have the time to really put your thoughts together and be able to go through the section with your thoughts intact, look at the things you want to look at and comment on, and generally take your time really pulling the game apart and putting it back together. The video where you analyzed the technical improvements in the SteamVR home environments before the game's release was excellent, and I (and I am sure many others) would like to see that level of analysis applied to the entire game.

I absolutely loved part 1 and 2, and they're certainly the only HL:A let's play style content I will ever watch. When I opened part 3 and saw the description, I was saddened that the incredible personality to the run was lost, and only made it a few minutes in to the video before seeing there was truly nothing for me there, as I was still playing through the game myself. I really hope you can, at some point, produce more content like part 1 and 2, that you're happy to release. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and actually unique. So much of your personality was effectively communicated through the medium of a VR game.

for me, appeal of watching watching let's plays is two-fold:
    1. specific LPers with specific personality, there, the game isn't really important, because they mainly use it as a playground/springboard into the entertainment/fun/jokes/comedy that they create, and I just love their sense of humor, so i'm there for the person, not the game (nor even the let's play itself, you could say).
    2. as an indie game dev/designer, I love watching BLIND LPs of games that I myself have already played through, comparing other people's reactions to the game with reactions I myself had, comparing when and how they learn/understand mechanics, how they solve the game's challenges, analyzing why it is, realizing my assumptions about design of the game, and human brain, which I got based on my own experience, deconstructing and fixing/expanding those based on the comparison with how other people deal with that stuff. It's kind of the next best thing after being in the room behind a playtester. And as a bonus, I can watch playtests of games that I was nowhere near the process of creation.
(And on that note: "what was the point in me replicating what others have done before?" - exactly the point that you wouldn't. everyone gets stuck on different parts or in different ways, and struggles with different things in different ways. the variety of watching different people tackle the same challenges differently is the point. for me, at least.)

    • @JackPorter
      @JackPorter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

people who watch the "no-commentary" let's play usually flock to them because they can't play themselves and want to see the game un filtered. no jokes and no personality. i think the issue is not with phillip doing anything that's not appreciable, but attracting the wrong crowd with adding this tag

      > "what was the point in me replicating what others have done before?" - exactly the point that you wouldn't.
By 'replicating' he meant in terms of video format and not gameplay.
But even if it were in the context of gameplay, if 100 people played a game from A to B, most of them would, and would not, easily beat and hardly beat challenges within that line. The variance exists for sure but is not so great as to deviate from the average.

Drat, I was really looking forward to watching you play through HL: Alyx. As somebody who won’t be able to play it myself but was still curious about the gameplay and story, I knew I was probably going to watch somebody else play it on TH-cam. I decided to watch your playthrough because although I don’t know you as a person, I’ve watched enough of your videos to be familiar with your style and sense of humor (more some than some other random sod on the internet at least). I did notice the difference between all of the videos, but really didn’t care all that much (although the 3rd one was more bland) because it was more about seeing the game being played and less about seeing you play the game. To use the same analogy as you did in this video, you were still the artist and not the painting.

Btw, he can also bring humor by talking but as he said long videos might be harder and less enjoyable to hear commentary atleast for him but the solution was him not talking but showing his humorous personality through playing itself, I enjoyed even the bit of throwing resin away because there's no reason for him to show everything in depth because it was supposed to be a funny way of doing the game

For me, the person themselves giving a reaction alongside methodical, slow, or otherwise explorative gameplay is the appeal I see. If it is a person I know is a fan of Half Life, I'd love to see them genuinely enjoy all the little details and interactions in the game. Of course, with how many gameplay videos are out there, it becomes a bit hard to find those kinds of genuinely interested people, however once you do, the contrast between them and the more popular (majority?) lets players can become much more apparent.

Philip, after watching videos like this I can't help myself but ponder about greater things, like social roles, modern 'one's identity vs. one's avatar' issue, socializing in a digital era/surviving the digital environments, etc. etc. - various stuff followed by human psyche or social behavior and communication. Well, something to chew on, really.
Tbh I'm quite enjoying descending in thought like this. And for that I thank you deeply.

But. it was *perfect*. I felt that the playthrough was exactly how I would imagine a let's play video by you. It was the most entertaining playthrough I'd ever seen. As with every video you out out, the playthroughs put a smile on my face.
    Thanks a ton :)

I think this style of "lets play" you were doing in chapter 1 and 2 are amazing and super innovative. You took a genre that wasn't quite your style and somehow made it your own. It reminds me a lot of Freeman's mind except much more mysterious because of the lack of talking. You're playing a character that the more I watch, the more I feel like I understand. You express this character with just body language which is much more expressive than just plain words. It has elements of pure visual comedy which is a art form I think we don't have enough of anymore. And Half-Life Alyx is the perfect game for something like this because there is so much to play with, to express this character. I'm not telling you that you should continue it, I'm just expressing that I think this is a wonderful idea.

This is such an awesome video, I really appreciate it! I am also a super methodical and analytical person of what I do, so I really appreciated the insight. For my two cents, LPs don’t do anything for me anymore, as I feel as though I’m wasting time now as a busy student. With that, I didn’t watch yours, but I love the idea of your 2nd episode, and the clips and humor are really unique and funny! That being said though, it would be difficult to watch an entire series like that, as it would get old for the viewer (though I’m sure not for the player, I too ducked around in games so much before). I think it’s very cool how you analyzed the hell out of this. Thanks!

I don't watch lets plays or streams of single player games, but I did give your HLA chapter 1 video a chance, assuming that you would not make a generic lets play. And I was not disappointed. I really liked the little experiments you did with the engine, since that is exactly what I was curious about, but I still got an impression on what the normal gameplay looked like.
So thank you for again and again sticking to your principles against the monetary incentives of putting out low effort content. You are more or less the last "gaming TH-camr" that I follow.

The chapter 1 & 2 videos were classic Philip and I laughed when you'd slap a zombie or mess around, the beauty of the game is that there is no right way to play it and even though there was no commentary I could almost imagine what you'd say through your hand actions which was enough and was hilarious! For me, as someone who doesn't own VR and maybe won't for a very long time, I was glad you didn't look into every corner of every level and take forever because it made me excited that I'll get to do that when/if I finally play the game. I have to be honest I got bored watching chapter 3 as I've watched other play throughs already, I only watched to the end because I always do with your videos.
Keep doing you Philip, your natural video styles are what keep me subscribed.

And you're completely right that we expected you to talk, thinking it would be your usual video, just better/longer, I watched the uncommented videos anyway and actually find out I might *prefer* that! They still show your unique style (well the first two anyway) and were very entertaining, at least for me. And as someone who played the game I don't even need or care about "let's play style" commentary; the only commentary I would be interested about is your thoughts on the actual game design and such. And you provided some of that in your amazing review, so yeah...
Basically your thoughts are spot on I think.

Philip I can guarantee that a lot of your viewers not only watch because of the high quality and effort you put into the series but also because of your personality. I don't think commentary would subtract from the gameplay. Also most let's plays nowadays don't follow the traditional format but cut down hours of gameplay into a ten minute video.

  • @LeafMaltieze

I actually liked that you were making a no commentary series. I was planning to send it to my friends who don't have VR, so they could see what the game was like for themselves, without most Lets Player's annoying antics ruining the first time experience. Valve News Network did a stream of their first play through, and while parts of it were great to see their reaction to, others were unbearable because they aren't just playing the game for themselves, but trying to entertain the audience to the detriment of the gameplay. I like watching speedrunners, because they aren't going to mess around with things that don't matter, but they'll still have little antics that don't ruin the pace of the game. They can't let anything ruin the pace of the game, because they are trying to get through it as fast as possible. Please continue the series. Throw away resin if you want to, or keep it, I don't really care, but play for yourself, as you would want to play it. I was really hoping to have a whole play through with no commentary.

I think an interesting way to do let's plays is how chuggaconroy does his playthroughs of various pokémon games. They're highly planned out and super-well researched beforehand and do an excellent job of presenting the game in both an enjoyable and very informative way. It's not exactly something one could do as a sideproject due to the insane amount of work required, and in that sense somewhat ruins the point of making a lets play, but it's a neat idea on how to take the formula and make it interesting to viewers.

You still mess around, breaking this world a bit (looking at how bullet indentations on bricks work), though less. And my left eye now didn't hurt as it did in the second one. I really would love you to continue this 'playthrough' of yours with whichever style you would prefer.

I did not notice that the third video changed style via the description, but due to your actions. The turning point actually came when you were contemplating about throwing a resin at a barnacle or to keep it. After you kept it I had a "wait a second" moment and noticing you also changed the UI. That also explained some of the gameplay changes( Which I'm surprised I did not notice earlier as I've played the game myself). When I actually read the description it explained everything. Overall I did enjoy all of the three videos and to be honest they were all a joy to watch. In actuality the only videos I've not enjoyed from you in the past 2 years were the ones from the video upscaling saga. Though I did enjoy the shitposts like the Russel pawns Alyx one. That and the comparison ones. Those were nice.
Edit: Forgot to say that I'm extremely disappointed from the lack of lens flair in the headcrab video. Unprofessional Philip.

Well, I'll start from saying that I do not comment on many videos, but I really want to express my thoughts about all this. First, you're a great person, I feel like you're sincere, pure and unique, you put a lot of effort and research in your videos, actually caring how viewers will react, in one word, this is quality, but in a good balance, for most of us. You can't make everyone happy, that's for sure, but you gotta put yourself in the first place, even if it's dumb or totally different than what viewers are used to. Make yourself happy about your videos, you're not obliged to do anything. Now talking about your videos, from my perspective: the first video was great! It has all Philip original stuff in it. If I did a blind test, I knew who played in this video. Perfection, for me at least. I knew that this was your first play trough since you seemed very excited, just from your movements in the game. Sadly, I can't say the same thing about the second video... I felt like you beat the game, and now you're doing a showcase, not actually playing it, which left a lot of viewers disappointed. Yeah, some moments were funny, but most of the video seems rushed, like you were obliged to make that video. It almost felt like someone else played, not you. Better or not, people know you as a natural quality man, what I mean is you do things right, but you seem natural doing it, and it's awesome! In the second video, the natural part is not here, you're not you! What I think needed to be done, was to just publish the videos and disable the comments, we wanna see your first reaction, not a scripted one. Sadly, you already beat the game and I still hope you enjoyed it, but I was hoping that we can see your first reaction in every video. Don't take advice, just do it, you are perfect the way you are, please stay that way! This was a major mistake, which harmed both you, and us, who were expecting to see the real first reaction of the legendary Philip! But hey, you could just do nothing, it's your decision after all. Well, I personally can't play Alyx, maybe in 5 years I will, but seeing you play the first chapter, naturally, is all I wanted. I honestly don't care about the rest of the game, I'll just remember the first video. :) Maybe you can do a summary like you did with HL1 and 2 at least. If not, I thank you for everything and please don't take advice from anyone, not even me. :) Just Come As You Are! Peace! \/

I honestly don't really care how you play the game, all I want is the gameplay and the story. With all your mess around I really enjoyed it, and I hope you did enjoy having fun too. It would sometimes bite me that you missed the resin or purposely missed the resin, but I would forget about it in a matter of seconds. All I want to say is that go play this the way you want to, either if want to mess around or not, its still fun watching you play this game. I mainly came here for story and less mess around after Pewdiepie's 2 part playthrough, and I think I hit a goldmine. You wouldn't start ignoring the cutscene (which is the best thing ever), but you would do it in a way no one else could do. You manage to capture the points where it's serious in the story and the points where you mess around at the same time, giving me a great chuckle over you doing something and a dramatic feel to what the characters are saying. I feel like your mess around can be easily be ignored which is great for the more serious playthrough watchers. I don't really know what I'm trying to type here because I don't really write essays, but hearing you in this video where you explained how your viewers (us) wants that you play it in a specific way and you obey those requests is kinda sad. I don't really know what should you actually should do: either keep messing around and making angry some people, or keep obeying the ones that want to maybe ruin your fun. For me personally I just want you to have fun with this game, but not only that capture the most important parts of the game's story (main reason I'm watching you).
Anyway I've lost track in what I'm trying to write...
All I hope is that you have fun with this game and keep bringing us great content

I thought the lack of commentary would make it feel a bit dull and lacking in personality but on the contrary I still managed to get that 'Pantented-Philip-Pheel' out of the way you were playing the game; as someone without any experience on VR it's really interesting to see a proper VR game being played by someone who's willing to show you the fun interactions you can have through the system. It was perfect Philip, don't listen to anyone on the internet.

Any TH-camr could have breezed through this game in a day, offering the occasional token joke or comment, but seeing Phillip throwing a headcrab at Russell, or trying to catch a headcrab in a basket, or sticking his finger into the barrel of a combine gun showed way more personality, and was just better to watch. It's like the difference between a CSGO professional and someone who's not very good at CSGO, but plays it for a laugh. I'd much rather watch the guy just doing it for a laugh.
