3 take aways today. 1) I agree that we did get a later start of sunshine here in San Diego due to our 6 weeks of May gray and June gloom which set things back ie tomatoes 2) Looks like Jacque'sfree style gardening has rubbed off on you and 3) and the one I love best is to refer to a possible failed area as a "test area" when showing your garden off instead of making excuses 😂

Thanks for the tour! I remember when you first bought the place and it was raw and you walked through what you envisioned the place to look like. I was excited to see it come to fruition. Now as it’s been established, I’m so proud of all the “fruits” of your labor. Your honesty about your wins and losses is an encouragement. I too have gone through a pandemic backyard raised bed garden transformation and have learned what works and what doesn’t. Your content is inspiring and encouraging! Thanks for taking us on your EPIC journey. Looking forward to more EPIC things to come!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

I remember, when I lived in San Diego, of a farmer who specialized in growing gourds. Think his farm was in Escondido…could be wrong. He made cool bird feeders. And also hanging art made of gourds. I bought one for my son’s bedroom that looked like an elephant head. Head, ears and trunk. It was sooooo cool! Hope he or at least his farm is still alive.
(Now I’m in Vermont…ready to start a flower stand in my front yard)
I’m going to add a strip of pepper plants next to road. With a sign…you-pick peppers…if you dare! I’ll label hotness nest to each plant. Great idea, right! Kids will enjoy as they have enjoyed free pumpkins!

Your new style is definitely mine--I have had the pleasure of gardening for over 30 years with my friend, Lisa, who lives in Paris and comes to live on my property in VT for about 2 months every summer. She has taught me a "disorderly order" of letting volunteers grow, sometimes moving them a bit, sometimes not, and lots of FLOWERS. The pollinators love my garden, and having the ground covered by plants conserves water. Of course, in July...we got hit by a massive flood in my area of Montpelier, but having really healthy soil in my garden, I think, helped the garden bounce or crawl back.
The one thing Lisa and I do is keep things pretty weeded, with the exception of any wild edibles such as purslane or lambsquarters. Such joy! Can't believe your leek, amazing! Thank you for showing the beauty of the wild garden.

Probably too late now, but here in Florida when we have storms instead of using sand bags, I use bags of mulch. Then after the hurricane season is over I empty the mulch into my plant beds.
I hope you and your plants do well during this hurricane storm you all are having.

You've gotta make salsa verde with the tomatillos! Roast the tomatillos (either with the grill in your oven, or maybe the fancy grill you've got in your yard haha), roast some jalapenos, then blitz it all together with cilantro, lime juice, and salt to taste. It's freaking delicious.

Best potential-disaster tip I’ve read today- fill gallon bags, or quarts if that’s what you have, with water and pack them around your freezer items.
If the power goes out, your food will stay cold and you will have fresh water .
If it doesn’t, hopefully, you can use them in your cooler, and still have water to drink !

The Midwest heat and infrequent rain had my garden looking pretty bad this year. My raised beds were booming though. Going to till up my garden next year. Mostly bc of the tree roots and going to put raised beds on top of them. Then going with an ibc tote converted into a rain catching system and put some irrigation down.

So next year ... tomatoes will be planted again...

Pretty much everything I planted has taken off, with my only garden disappointments being the spring brassicas that bolted! Hey Kevin, pumpkin vines will naturally put down roots as long as they're contacting the soil, but it's great that you're helping it along. You can actually bury watermelon vines and they'll put down roots too, and that's to battle against vine borers as they'll attack the main stem but you'll have backups if that ever happens

I also went the "jungle" route this year. 30+ flower types with all the veggies. I compost and get "free" tomatoes, peppers, melons., Clearing out veins I discovered a row of Amish Cantaloupes (from a nearby farm - gigantic produce). We live in one of the rainiest areas in the nation (middle TN) and I've used my expensive irrigation system three whole days! LOL Odd weather - cold winter, cool Spring and Fall (we had the heater on in the pool in June!)

I moved two years ago. Didn't really have time to grow much with all the work the house needed. I tried growing out of containers on the back porch and everything fried. Lesson learned. This year I planted in the ground but I found out my soil is heavy clay and I didn't have enough chicken wire to surround the whole thing so rabbits laid waste to everything I transplanted. I did get some blueberries in the ground and although they got munched on, they are coming back strong now that they're protected. Next year is my year!

Here's an idea: fence off an area with 9 foot fence (probably also requiring foundation), put a door in the fence, like on a house, lay 2ft thick insulation on the inside, and rig up a way you can install and uninstall a glass or polycarbonate ceiling depending on the season.
Yes I am suggesting an insulated greenhouse. I promise you'll like it, as will your bananas if you get a frost (many bananas will survive frosts but it's better to avoid the risk by insulating, and heating if necessary).

Big differences for me this year too.
    (1) First (MASSIVE!) success with onions, and more success with potatoes than in the past.
    (2) Sad year for winter squash. This is in contrast to last year, when I harvested 9 "long pie" pumpkins from a single vine (!) and 4 pumpkins averaging about 12# each elsewhere, plus a good batch of wonderful delicata. I LOVE having squash all winter, but no: the fight against cucumber beetles, squash vine borers, and NEVER ENDING squash bugs robbed me this year. I have plans for next year that include giving the back yard a year off from cucurbits entirely -- which pains me, but it is needed!
    (3) The new Birdie bed in my front yard is a bright spot. It is just SO beautiful, overflowing with nasturtiums and chard and purple kale and parsley from the front, bright yellow marigolds filling in the back corners, BURSTING with oversized aji chiles in the middle. (I had bush beans in the back row and have replaced them with okra, still growing.) From my office window I can see pedestrians stopping to admire it. It's my most favorite bed I've ever grown.
Oh, and like you: my back pathways are overgrown with volunteer sauce tomatoes!

Hey, I'm growing Birdhouse Gourds too for the 1st time along with my luffas. I can't wait to see how you cut out the holes in the gourds,, it will help me learn.

I loved this tour! I would also love to see this sort of thing contrasted with "before" footage to see the difference. Everyone loves a good makeover!

Last year, our tomato harvest was pretty poor, because we had such a late frost along with a big cold snap hit us in Apri/May, along with a prolonged spell of high heat. This year, we were actually able to start planting at the end of February/early March and haven't had nearly the amount of high temperatures as the year before and we have harvested 3 cases of diced tomatoes, 15 jars of salsa, and are still picking tomatoes every day off of our plants. I think we figured between 2 - 2.5x9.5 planters we have picked/processed over 100 lbs of tomatoes. The year before we got less than a case of diced tomatoes. Our knowledge of how to fertilize/water/cultivate tomatoes has grown, but the weather being noticeably cooler than last year, as well as having a prolonged spring, has really been interesting. Hopefully next year will be somewhere in between the last two years or perhaps better. Our freezer is stuffed with green beans, peas, corn, tomatoes, onions, and green peppers.

An idea; build an individual birdie bed around each dragon fruit. Break the terracotta pot off as you fill in with more soil? I believe you can deadhead dahlias and not affect bulb growth. They should flower into October in your climate. Thanks for the updates.

You could probably secure those dragonfruit pots by wrapping them with some cattle paneand then covering them with burlap so they look nice. That way you won't have to disturb them. As for the posts, you could stabilize by adding more posts to the top or middle so it looks more like a trellis. Then prune. Your dragonfruit look great by the way!

Make tomatillo salsa or enchilada sauce! Even if you don’t like tomatillos but themselves, there’s so many good recipes out there ☺️

We got a cutting to fruit in 12 months. You have a few things to fix with your dragons.
    1) No terracotta pots
    2) keep wood trellises out of the pot
    3) stop using Fox Farms soil
    4) Check out our farm tours with the experts we interview.

Thanks for a great tour & sharing successes and failures. Strange to see y’all bracing for a hurricane while we in NC haven’t anything happening but heat & humidity. Love learning from you and Jacques! Keep growing!

I’ve loved watching you grow over so many years. Jacque is definitely rubbing off on you. I’m sure eventually you’ll just have a whole forest.
The pots almost look like a video game and you could be Mario and move around the garden though them. Lol
How much space do you garden in now? I don’t remember seeing that in past videos after you moved space.
Everything looks wonderful. The weather has been off everywhere. Stay safe. My fam is in Palm Springs with a lot of that hurricane coming through.

Any other Ottawa, ON. people here? How are your gardens doing?
I had a bit of a late start, as I was busy building raised garden beds. :)
