Portrait Photography with an Entry Level DSLR and Kit Lens (i.e. Nikon D3400)

I recently released a video regarding portrait photography using a Nikon D7000 and fixed 50mm f/1.8. The wide open aperture allows for a nice blurred background which is great for portraits.
After the release, I received a handful of questions regarding entry level DSLRs and kit lenses. Since most people do not have a fixed 35 or fixed 50, they wanted to know if the kit lens would perform the same.
I ventured out to take portraits using an entry level DSLR and standard 18-55 kit lens with a Nikon D3400. Regardless of your camera and lens (be it Canon T6i, T5i, Nikon D3300, D3200, or perhaps the Sony a6000), you can take some great portraits using various techniques in my opinion.
    Nikon:
    Fixed 50mm w/ auto focus: amzn.to/2eG2eWb
    Fixed 50mm w/o auto focus: amzn.to/2uNMoz7
    Fixed 35mm w/ auto focus: amzn.to/2gULtar
    Nikon D3400 w/ 18-55 kit lens: amzn.to/2gjCOdW
You will save a bit with the fixed 35mm (auto focus) over the fixed 50mm if you choose to go that route.

I bought a D3400 thanks to this channel. It's been awesome (the camera and channel both) I hope he gets to review the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 for Nikon in the future. I learned a lot using the "kit" 18-55mm but feel like I could finally move up to a faster lens that isn't expensive. PS The Sigma is much MUCH heavier than the 18-55 kit lens and is a little more intimidating out of the box. But you can get one for under $250 with a 77m UV filter now, which is nice.

Again, another great video that provides just enough information to get anyone interested in going out with their equipment and taking some great photos. I believe that much of what makes great photography is in the artist's technique, and framing of his/her subject.

I always wanted an expensive camera. Thought an expensive camera can take better pictures, until I watched the videos of this genius and then I realised that it's not really the lens but who's behind it that takes awesome photos. And I bought my Nikon D3400. It's an amazing entry level dslr. Thanks for all your videos!!!

Thanks for the post/feedback Murali!:) Fully agree!:) A dynamic/unique/awesome image is not about the gear, rather it is about the person behind the camera. Camera gear can only do so much. The D3400 is a solid/capable camera in my opinion ... a good amount of knowledge and skill go a long way in this world of photography:).

My goodness, you are talking to me in this video. I have been learning post for over four years but just started this year in really shooting. I got me a Nikon D5200, brand new, but yet an old camera. They are so inexpensive, what the heck for my first go round! I have just the one lens and a couple of adapters (macro and micro, which I will be surprised if they do much...LOL). I liked your tips on shooting portraits and will be testing this out this week. Will shoot aperture priority and see how things look. Thanks for the head start! One thing I like about photography is that even when your shot is not really good, you learn from it, so good or bad we learn something new!
Thank you for your channel, enjoy it!

Thankyou so much for motivating us that if we don't have costly camera or lens we can do it with what we have like entry level dslr n kit lens. Your videos boost our confidence that we can create beautiful portraits even with kit lens. In which mode you take portrait manual or AV mode.

    • @RealWorld

Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Many entry level cameras are very capable in my opinion ... a bit of technique and knowledge can go a long way:). I like aperture priority for portraits (Av on Canon, A on Nikon):). Aperture allows you to better control depth of field which is good for portraits.

Another great video! I noticed that in an earlier post you said for portrait photo's you'd lean towards the 35mm as opposed to 50mm. Can you elaborate on why? Many photographers recommend the 50mm for portraits, yet I have heard that if you have a Nikon D3x00 you should get the 35mm instead and I can't figure out why that would be the case.

    • @lilleonso08
      @lilleonso08 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      M P it's because 35mm on a crop lens is around 50mm.

Is it worth getting a VR lens for a 18-55mm or is there not much difference for amateur portrait and landscape photography at that length

What AF-area and Focus mode do you use when taking portraits?

    • @RealWorld

Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I like using single focus mode/point as this allows me to control the specific focal point to lock on subject as needed. I also really like both the fixed 50mm f/1.8 ( th-cam.com/video/e2TZVu7yZig/w-d-xo.html ) and fixed 35 f/1.8 ( th-cam.com/video/BG0eZZaMmYE/w-d-xo.html ). If I had to pick one, I might lean towards the fixed 50:).
