It's wild to me the release timings of all the solo stuff, Mel C having a 4-5 single album run in-between Spice albums?! Mel B releasing her album less than a month before Forever? They were literally churning them out, the girls must have been exhausted.

I think you should do a documentary of what all the 5 girls were doing from their breakup in 2001 to their 2007 reunion since most fans and general public didn't really keep up with any of them until they had the 2007 reunion. It'd be nice to know unknown information from that time.

Those interviews during the making of Holler with Mel C are a really tough watch. I adore her solo work and love her voice, and for her to go from her own music and sound, to effectively just fulfilling a contractual obligation while also struggling with her mental health, it’s not easy viewing. Especially with hindsight and knowing now what she was going through. I enjoy Forever but I agree with what others have said - it’s very much Spice Girls by name but not by nature. I felt the same way with Headlines in that you get the sense they’re taking it all a bit too seriously.
Anyway, great video as always! Love the feature length, although I wish I noticed how long it was before I started watching it in bed as it’s now just after 1am haha. Fab work as ever!!🎉

It is hard for me to watch that Mel C. is hating on the spice girls as an entity, she legit admits she is not that person and she wants it to be over. Sorry not sorry but you started the spice girls, then have the guts to quit, don't deliver 0% work. I know she had eating disorder issues, but so did some of the others. I respect her, I like her now. But.. she seems now so inauthentic with all the different opinions she's throwing left, right and center: and now she is a sporty spice loving it again? I don't buy it. This was really hard to watch especially seeing the others putting the work in, Emma being so innocent. I did like Mel C. before this all, don't get me wrong. But then also the heavy solo career songs, rock&roll-ish punk, the hair, the weight going up and down, darling just quit take rest. Happy that she seems to be in a good place now. Fame was perhaps not good for her history&life in general and we get that.

This album was everything for me at the time. I actually remember the day I bought it. It was cold and dark and raining and I was at a careers fair from school. I never ever understood why not everyone had it or knew the songs like I did after the impact of the two previous albums. I didn't really listen to radio or watch TV or read magazines (ahead of the times, Madonna American Life lol), so it was a little bit of a jarring feeling, I remember.
I love every track, not a weak one for me. And the visuals we got are really so beautiful. It's a shame it didn't get the attention and love it deserved,
Thanks always for your videos allowing me to explore my memories and experience of such seminal albums in my life.
EDIT: Ugh - so many amazing solo songs in the years between Spice World and Forever. What an incredible time and many great memories. Every Spice fan is a huge fan of Mel C's Northern Star album, surely? It's really quite an achievement.

A LOT of things happened in 2000. Pop switched to many other genres. You can see with acts like Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, S Club 7, Christina Aguilera (a few with them with only one album prior) that they all switched to a much mature sound and towards R&B…it was a natural progression at the time…so of course it was a radical change from Spice Girls’ previous work. It couldn’t have gone any other way honestly: they were so huge it was only a matter of time for each to do their own thing and ditch the branding and also grow out of their Spice personas and sounds.
Kuddos to them! It’s a funky mature album!

The vocals in FOREVER were amazing. Better harmonies, bigger vocal ranges. It seemed they had worked a lot with theor craft. The songs were fantastic. But they almost lost their initial soft pop sound. It is great for an artist to experiment and change his sound. But the Spice Girls were faced bt the audiences as pure bubblegum pop. Their audiences by then had grown and it wasnt any cool no more to listen to the Spice Girls. The 4 of them are the talented one. But Geri was the spirit, the crazy one, the idea of girl power more than anyone.

Wow, this took me back to the terrible 2000s I was having. Think this is is why Forever is so special to me. It definitely got me through the tough times.
I hear what Spice fans say about it being a bit too far from what they had done previously, however, one point I do always make is that they’ve always had a bit of an R&B sound, especially from Spice with tracks like Last Time Lover, Love Thing, If U Can’t Dance. Spiceworld is defo the most pop sounding they did.
If you think about the solo material in between Spiceworld & Forever, you was never going to get a pure pop album. We had Mel B venturing in the R&B, we had a real mix of genres with Mel C, Victoria had gone into garage/R&B, Emma had worked with Tin Tin Out. They’d all ventured from the very pop sound.
To me, Forever was a very strong album. Lyrically and vocally they had really gone leaps and bounds. There is definitely spice sounds throughout just in a more mature nature.
It’s sad to see the pain in Mel C’s eyes, she had admitted herself that she wasn’t ready to come back into the Spice Girls. If U Wanna Have Some Fun, Tell Me Why, Weekend Love, Get Down With Me, Wasting My Time, could have all been singles in my opinion. Due to the shift in sound it needed more promotion to get people on board. I mean look at how long it took for Geri & Mel C’s solo albums to gather pace, it was only after the 1st 3 singles did they start to rebound up the chart. The early 2000s sort of reminds me of now where the music industry was saturated with new music, so it needed time to breathe. It was sad that it never got to do so.
Spice Girls are always my most played artists, Forever gets as much attention from me as the others. I always play them in order and I don’t feel Forever feels out of place at all.
Once again, a great documentary! I throughly enjoyed this. Thanks for bringing back the Forever era, although there was issues, it was short I still very much treasure this era.

_Forever_ is a good album, quite ahead of its time and still sounds fresh and crispy now as if it were released yesterday. It was a reflection of who they were at that time, it was a new chapter, a reinvention. I love artists that evolve without repeating themselves (Madonna, Melanie C, Christina, Pink, Nelly Furtado etc), artists that aren't monotonous. I skip a couple of tracks off the album. _Holler, Wasting My Time, Right Back at Ya_ is my top 3.

Excellent work, thank you. I was 13 when this album came out and was having a sk8er boi phase, so thought I was too mature to listen to the Spice Girls and was listening to Linking Park and Sum 41. I gave Forever a proper listen earlier this year, and what I took away from it is that most of the songs aren't that memorable. I love Holler and Goodbye, but apart from Tell Me Why, I couldn't sing you the chorus of any of the other songs off the top of my head. Like you said at the end of the video, it doesn't have the spice of the first two albums

I absolutely love these documentaries! Forever is my favorite Spice Girl album out of the three. It’s interesting people find it a complete departure, because I feel that R&B elements have always been incorporated throughout their albums, especially with the first one. it’s definitely more evolved considering the trends that we’re going on at the time, but I feel like it’s very very strong and deserved more. I also really enjoy the more mature look that the girls were doing starting in 1998. I understand people enjoy the campiness about the Spice Girls, but it looked really good on them. I also wonder what it would’ve been like if the third came out in 99 with some of the original tracks. I love the leaks as well from this era.

The third album if Geri stayed would’ve been a sonic mix of Schizophonic and Forever leaning more towards the former since Geri apparently was adamant on maintaining a pop sound with the first two albums when the others wanted more R&B and probably would’ve been released in 1999 since most of the material wouldn’t have been scrapped and Absolute would’ve been involved since there wouldn’t have been an ultimatum for the group to give had Geri stayed.
Honestly though Forever should’ve been a double album with the first half being the pop songs and the second being the R&B ones. So the group could satisfy their desire for a new sound without alienating their fans.

The departure of Geri lead to everyone pursuing their own thing, which compromised the group's synergy. The girls were overworked and exhausted, not recording together and promoting together plus too many other projects released around Forever is what ultimately affected the album. It took too long to be put out and it's a shame that so many great songs didn't make it to the final tracklist.

To me its their best album. IF YOU WANNA HAVE SOME FUN is perfection. WEEKEND LOVE too. Maybe a bit too serious compared to their previous but it was ok. Still the best Spice-related material ever is NORTHERN STAR, as a Madonna fan I loved all the RAY OF LIGHT references, Mel C showed that she could do lots of genres and sell the songs. She was always my fave and this album confirmed her talent. 🤟

Melanie C tends to be blamed for the premature end of _Forever_ due to her solo success. Yes, she wanted to be a solo act and was right given that she had the most solo success out of the group by far, sold millions, had a string of hits all over Europe for years and multi-certified albums (8 in total) however she was also not ready to go back in the group. She made wonders vocally on the album but mentally she wasn't in a good place and wasn't even given the right time to heal. Otherwise I'm sure she would have enjoyed that era. Mel B and Emma at the other hand are universally referred to as the most loyal members of the group so far but actually they were both creating their solo projects while working on _Forever_ and I refuse to believe that they genuinely thought they could promote both and be solo stars and a group at the same time, it's unthinkable. They all turned their backs on the group in favour of their solo ambitions.

I didn’t care for the album at the time cause it was such a departure from their first two albums, but listening to it later, I really enjoyed it. You can tell the music scene was changing. The album could’ve had a different impact if it wasn’t thrown in the middle of solo careers, but virgin wanted to bank on everything.

While its my least favorite of the Spice Girls albums, to say that Mel C was too distracted with her own album promotion and that that contributed to the result of the album is an unfair assessment. During this time, as she describes in her autobiography, she was at her lowest point mentally and was just barely going on about which culminated in her having to leave the group altogether due to the toll that their grueling schedule + her eating disorder took on her mental health. Her not being there 100% was her way of coping while also not breaking the arrangements she had made with the group.
I feel what contributed to the album not clicking the same is honestly the switch in genre and ofc Geri leaving which led to the group losing some of its authenticity. Besides any artist by the 3rd album around this time was seen as old news, a tendency that only grew from there after the pop scene became so saturated and ever changing. The fact that they managed to still get #1 singles with all this going on is a feat in itself.

"What if Melanie C had not been so distracted with her own solo music."
She was despressed, bulimic and dealing with ptsd after being a*used. Her solo stuff was probably her survival kit at that point. It might sound exagerated, but if she wasn't distracted with her own solo stuff she might've ended up not well (mentally of physically).

Forever lost the endearing camp that mostly Geri brought to the first two albums. It's a good enough album, if only it didn't sound like almost everything in mainstream pop that time - the slick, millennial, frenetic, Rodney Jerkins sound that made the rounds from Brandy to J.Lo, MJ to TLC, Toni to Britney, etc.
Holler is perfectly serviceable, but is pretty tame for a Spice Girls single. Wasting My Time, Get Down With Me, and If You Wanna Have Some Fun are quite danceable.
It's the ballads that really let this collection down. They're just glacially-paced, hella long, and just drag the pacing.

    • @LeeoGoneWild
      @LeeoGoneWild 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

What a dumb take. “Goodbye” is one of their best ballads. Geri was not endearing, she actually held the group back vocally and dancing capabilities. This is why “Holler” was so incredible during “Return of the Spice girls” because the rest of the group was able to be more modern and sexy whereas Geri struggled in everything… severely.

My only feedback is that there is more footage out there that could have been used (MTV EMA performance/interviews, TOTP Plus interview, LLLTW National Lottery, TFI Friday) rather than too much from the video shoots. It just would have been good to see the maximum footage available from that era, since there is so little overall.

On another note, Schizophonic is a rare gem of an album, from beginning to end. Absolutely amazing lyrical content, production is great, and the selection of songs was impeccable. If Geri had stayed in the Spice Girls, I do think Schizophonic would’ve been an absolutely AMAZING third album, but as a group. I imagine how they’d all sound together on those songs. It has a slightly more ‘mature’ pop sound, with some rock, Latin, and broadway influences; a very eclectic record. Not that the SGs didn’t do more serious or mature songs, like ‘Naked’, ‘Do It’, etc. Schizophonic as a SG album could’ve been such a hit. But I would’ve adjusted the singles a bit. Lol. ‘Look at Me’, ‘Lift Me Up’ and ‘Mi Chico Latino’ are good but idk…a bit plain. ‘Let Me Love You’ is a standout track. ‘Sometime’ is another excellent one too.

I will keep trying to get Todd In The Shadows to do a Trainwreckords episode on this album, but until then, this video will most certainly suffice. A truly fascinating and eye-opening story of a band who had all the momentum in the world and then suddenly had the wheels pulled out from under them, and ended up crumbling under the weight of an incredibly harsh media landscape in their homeland and a rapidly changing music scene across the pond, even despite attempts to pander to said American audience.
