Rock With U remains one of my favourite songs ever and the 'Discipline' shoot is just so strongly beautiful, it hurts. I love the whole alien-esque humidity deity with those latex gloves. I still love it, 16 years on.
Even though Janet worked with other producers, I still wish we would have gotten at least one Janet/Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis record on this album. "Rock With U" was one of the best pop songs of 08.
This video failed to mention the entire Super Bowl fiasco that continued to affect Janets career during this time. It also didn't mention the behind the scenes drama that unfolded between LA Reid and Miss Jackson during the promotion of the album. All of this info is crucial to understanding why this album severely underperformed. Lastly, it didn't help that the Rock With U Tour was cancelled due to Janet having severe vertigo. She was definitely up against a mountain of obstacles at this time in her life, so the success that she did have with Discipline in hindsight, is pretty amazing!
Let’s be real the tour was also cut short due to poor sales. Some of the box scores that came out were pretty brutal. I’m very happy that she’s recovered her touring power with SOTW and together again.
I payed this album dust back in the day I was like ew I did not like the album cover but 4 years ago I got I got in my Janet era and ever since this has been my favourite album of hers, insane how time can definitely change your taste and interest in different music
I honestly can't remember any of her singles after All for you. Now that I took a second, I remember All nite 😅 Feedback is brilliant, deserved a bigger success.
I really like this album! And I agree, it's definitely underrated pop music. Some of the interludes are super cringy and feel very outdated but the songs are still very fresh. Very recommended.
This was my first album release as a fan. I feel so much nostalgia watching this clips. This wasn't her best album, but it sure is the most underrated.
soooooo underrated and sooo loved! its criminal those chart positions and i must of been in a bubble as i thought it was way more successful commercially. i just love the whole aesthetic and vibe that runs through the music , the looks , the videos and choregraphy and shows janets talents - defo an album i revisit alot and stands up into days music !
It's an underrated album. It's very cohesive with the robot theme and vibe. This rolling breakbeat, electro-R&B sound became huge in the years afterward. A lot of artists copied - she's always been ahead of the curve. My faves are "Curtains", "Discipline" and "LUV". It's fun to see her layering her vocals in this doc.
I loooove this album. Sure, it's not her best.... but it's excellent. I felt like such a rockstar for stanning an album so hard that the world slept on! Haha Rock With U really is one of the greatest songs in the history of ever! THank you for this video and all the incredible footage. I am in heaven!
I love all for you, Damita jo and discipline the most out of her whole discography. Music wise my favorite songs are mostly on those 3 albums and they work great as full bodies of work
Just discovered your channel right now, so happy that you put a light on less well known/underrated artist (not talking about janet of course ahah), really hope you'll talk about P!nk someday ! ^^
It was also extremely frustrating that her label, Island, did not bother to release any CD maxi-singles for Feedback and Rock With U. Feedback had a ton of club mixes and the only way to get them on CD was to hunt down one of the promo CD singles. Us fans would have snapped-up a retail CD maxi-single in seconds and those sales would've boosted the song further up the charts (both singles deserved global top-ten positions). Island really did a piss poor performance with its promotion for Janet. No wonder she left them behind.
I reallly appreciate this and your summary at the end, but it remains one of my greatest musical disappointments! The best thing to come out of it was the tour, which i partly travelled from the UK to see, only for it to be cancelled. It looks fun on youtube tho😅
the album cover is one of her best tbh but theres just something missing from the discipline album. the first & second half of the album seem a bit disconnected from each other and almost feels as if discipline could've been expanded as a double album, with the dance pop songs (feedback, rock with u, etc) being one album and the r&b songs (discipline, curtains, etc) being another.
I thought Feedback charted far better internationally, it felt like a big song at the time. I guess not. I enjoyed this album, probably as much as 20YO (both underrated) but Discipline had far less 'Janet' in it's DNA, a bit faceless but full of bops.
Love Jan. Every album would listen to all and see which I felt would be a hit. Discipline album felt only Feedback and So Much Betta were hit material. Discipline was better than Damita Jo and 20yo for sure.
Unpopular opinion: was never a fan of the chosen cover art. I always thought the picture with Janet sitting crossed legged and with a cap as a better picture for the cover.
Okay, while I do enjoy some songs on this album (all the singles, 2nite, Roller Coaster, Let Me Know, and Curtains), this album just doesn't feel like a Janet album. And of course it doesn't - it contains her least amount of input ever since Control. If she was already running out of things to say in Damita Jo and 20 Y.O., Discipline is proof that she already ran out of anything substantial to sing about. It's competent, but it's slick, calculated, cold, and dry of the soul and joy that used to be palpable on her previous works. It sounds like a Janet superfan doing her best Janet impression. It's basically a Ciara album.
Totally agree with that statement about Ciara. In all fairness, had she dropped THIS ALBUM as her 3rd, as opposed to her actual third album, Fantasy Ride (underrated album nonetheless), I firmly believe she would be on the same commercial level as Rihanna and Beyonce are right now, and not relegated to just being a mid-00s, crunk&B-pop era nostalgia act.
I’m still mad at the world for not embracing Janet through this era.
16 years later…. Discipline needs RESPECT.
ugh so true!!! everyone who ignored this masterpiece should be rotting in jail.
I agree. One of Janet's most underappreciated body of work
I love Discipline, You gotta do a video About Damita Jo and 20YO too, please
Rock With U remains one of my favourite songs ever and the 'Discipline' shoot is just so strongly beautiful, it hurts. I love the whole alien-esque humidity deity with those latex gloves. I still love it, 16 years on.
Same re the visual aesthetic of Discipline...in my opinion, one of the few redeeming features of that whole era.
Even though Janet worked with other producers, I still wish we would have gotten at least one Janet/Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis record on this album. "Rock With U" was one of the best pop songs of 08.

There will never be another Janet
another Madonna
another Michael
another Prince
another Whitney and
another George Michael!
Or Britney!
I love this album. I hope one day it gets the recognition it deserves. Janet is the blueprint!!!!
JUSTICE 4 DISCIPLINE

Discipline is SOLID
was just listening to rock with u rn. When i decided to come on youtube, ur mind is so amazing!!
I do love your videos, I do think they are a little long winded at points, but I do love this record.
Fair enough. Thanks for watching
Just discovered your channel right now, so happy that you put a light on less well known/underrated artist (not talking about janet of course ahah), really hope you'll talk about
P!nk someday ! ^^
💓
This was amazing! Do other Janet eras next 🔥
The Discipline album is really ahead of it's time
Ive not watched this video yet but all im saying is Feedback & Rock with you. Omg Amazing, feedback should've been massive.
Damn, what an album. I totally slept on it when it was released, an underrated gem for sure
This is my favorite album and era of all time I'm a huge fan of Janet she is so beautiful ❤
The promo shoot was so fierce and professional just amazing how much they can get through in just 2 days!?!?
My first Janet Concert was during this era ❤
what a great album!!
Feedback was my first intro to Janet. Still love it to this day
Get Halle Bailey in dance rehearsals NOOOWWWWW for the biopic becauseeee who else is playing Janet?!

Been listening 🎧 to Janet a lot lately going through her albums again love the album Discipline I will watch this later thanks
Absolutely love your documentaries, will you be doing one on the MKS Sugababes era?
Her best post the Velvet Rope for me. It came out of no where and did good.
2 great lead singles that sadly flopped here in the UK.
That's hardwork
PLEASEEE do a vid on Damita Jo!!!!
❤

I only just recently started listening to Janet. Already in love with this album. Too bad I didn’t know about it sooner.
Justice for discipline and damita jo
I thought Feedback charted far better internationally, it felt like a big song at the time. I guess not. I enjoyed this album, probably as much as 20YO (both underrated) but Discipline had far less 'Janet' in it's DNA, a bit faceless but full of bops.
I agree, and I think it's largely because there was no creative input from Janet/Jam/Lewis
The quality of her aesthetic went way down hill once Gil was put in charge.
Love Jan. Every album would listen to all and see which I felt would be a hit. Discipline album felt only Feedback and So Much Betta were hit material. Discipline was better than Damita Jo and 20yo for sure.

It sounds like a Janet superfan doing her best Janet impression. It's basically a Ciara album.
Not Ciara 😂😂 I do agree with you though, the lack of creative input from Janet made the record feel like anyone could have done it
Totally agree with that statement about Ciara. Janet should be the real queen and not that one from destiny’s child
Aaliyah
Amazing job!
