hi friends! thank you all for watching and for your comments. i didn't expect this video to get so much attention, but i'm glad that it did and that a lot of you enjoyed it. since this is an educational video and an open space for us all to learn, I wanted to address a couple of things based on some comments down below:
    1. Complex PTSD (or c-PTSD) is a disorder similar to PTSD that arises in response to repeated exposure to traumatic events (including abuse and other living situations). C-PTSD symptoms can be present after leaving the situation OR during the ongoing abuse. It includes 6 main criteria: 3 from PTSD (avoidance, re-experiencing the trauma, and hypervigilance), and 3 specific to C-PTSD (low feelings of self-worth, problems with relationships/trust, and emotional dysfunction).
    2. You may or may not have been diagnosed despite displaying all of these symptoms because C-PTSD is not a common diagnosis in the United States. While it is a recognized disorder in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), it is a more recent disorder and is not listed in the DSM-5. Therefore, a lot of counselors in the United States may not consider it a valid diagnosis or may not even know of its existence if they're a little outdated.
    3. Someone pointed this out down in the comments, but in the video I misuse the phrase "trauma bond." This was my mistake. I meant to say "shared trauma" (which, if I'll be honest, also has several other meanings) as in the bonds formed between those who experience the same trauma. "Trauma bonding" in its official capacity is an unhealthy psychological response that occurs between an abused person and an abuser and should not apply in the situation I was referencing.
    4. I made this video for 2 reasons. First, as someone who struggles with C-PTSD from physical, verbal, and emotional abuse, Hunter's character is one of the first times (if not the first time) I've seen these symptoms accurately portrayed and addressed in a healthy way. I can't imagine having him as representation when I was 16 and I'm so glad kids in bad situations can relate to him now.
And second, I am studying to enter the mental health field, and thought it would be interesting to look at Hunter from that standpoint. I would NEVER condone diagnosing a real person like this, but since it's a fictional character it's alright to look at the resources and make our own judgments. That being said, I am not a professional. If you disagree with any of my attributions or analyses, or anyone else's in the comments, that's totally fine! There's no reason that we can't all respect one another's interpretations of this character without it escalating to negativity.
    5. *EDIT (10/13): There have been a couple of questions about the jokes in this video. I wanted to clarify that it was not my intention to trivialize this subject or treat it with any kind of disrespect. I did somewhat intend for this video to be lighthearted, however, because in my experience as someone with C-PTSD I've found it can be less triggering and more accessible to have a bit of levity when discussing a serious topic. Of course that's not the case for everyone, so I do apologize for anything potentially inappropriate.
    6. If I made any other mistakes, please please please comment and let me know! The absolute last thing I want to do is spread misinformation. Thank you again for watching and for your comments and I hope that this video helped you learn something new :)

      1) Cool video (Hunter quickly became one of my favorites when he debuted .)
      2) I have trauma (though not PTSD ; not diagnosed at least) and could *really* relate to Hunter (especially his panic attack that hit very close to home). One things I would like to add to this discussion I guess is that , in the Flyer Derby episode (forgot the name lol) he coped with his trauma by making it sound funny (which is aided by thinking that his treatment is normal )ie “ Hah classic “ to being left on a mountain alone. I also very much tend to do that with mine to cope (and have had other friends with trauma do the same) with humor. And sometimes when I joke about it people are like “Yo what the hell?! Are you good?” and I’m like “Yeah…?”. So, can’t tell if that’s me projecting or not but yeah , Hunter using a bit of humor to cope with trauma is something I noticed.

I have been diagnosed w/ ptsd w/ it recognized by my therapists that it's cptsd, and I've felt the same way with his character. He also covers trauma from a high demand region, which is a newer topic in therapy as well.
I really liked your video and too found him one of the first I could ever relate to.
I'd probably add that the C for cptsd has been known for complex, but it's clinically shifting more towards chronic as it doesn't tend to go away. Also, ptsd stems from a singular event but cptsd is when you can't leave the situation and it continues for an extended duration of time ranging from days to years. This causes things to get more entangled, making it more complex.

Yeah, all the characters and their responses to different things happening makes sense and helps you realize how truly awful and traumatic things can be for the five main teens. Like, when Gus starts crying in the rain in the human realm, that’s exactly what any twelve- or thirteen-year-old would do, and as a teen myself it’s crazy to imagine that happening to me, and it helps me empathize with the characters more

Hunter is my favorite character in the show thanks to the portrayal of PTSD and his struggle to meet the demand and adoration from others, only to realize that it felt wrong in the end. Also, Zeno Robinson’s vocal performance makes him more engaging due to how anime-esque it can get.
Additionally, I’m confused to how come the Puss in Boots 2 vs Velma panic attack discourse happened without mentioning The Owl House panic attack scene. It was all over Twitter months ago yet the latter was absent. So confusing.

I have severe anxiety and I've been in a situation similar to Hunter's - father/familial figure abusing me, instilling insecurities just like all of Hunter's. While I have not been diagnosed with it, and therefore can't be sure, I display a lot of C-PTSD symptoms so it felt good to see a character going through the same things as me (minus the magic, of course) in a way that is accurate and does not romanticize it.
I loved how you pointed out all the symptoms he exhibits with an explanation of it. They all hit home for me, but the biggest one is Hunter's/my jumpiness. I expect to be hit whenever someone raises their hand, and just like Hunter, I don't defend myself. Honestly props to the writers of this show for showing the physical abuse Hunter went through without an actual scene of him being beaten - simply his constant flinching. And feeling as though it is normal, just because it was his "normal".
Hunter as a character has unironically helped me so much. From relatability to seeing him as a comfort character, he is my all-time favorite. I frickin love him.

My friends were not nearly as excited as I was to see the representations of Hunter. I always get super attached to the characters show a lot of my own disordered thought processes. I think it’d be interesting to look at Gus and his trauma as well. I’ve seen no one talk about it but the episode where Gus’s illusions took over the school is another representation of trauma. And to see them show a breathing technique that does often help people calm down was amazing. Sadly breathing techniques don’t work for me often as I have breathing issues and tend to overthink it but it works for a lot of people. This show is honestly amazing and I will always be pissed at Disney for limiting it so much.

I love the representations of Anxiety, trauma, PTSD, and depression in TOH. It's some of the most accurate depictions of each I've ever seen in media, and it taught me a lot about how to deal with those sorts of things. Obviously there are differences in reality, but it's still really nice to see a show actually trying to depict those things accurately.

So seeing a character learn to overcome those issues even if he still struggles with them every once in a while is very heart-warming for me. I'm going to be struggling with these mental health issues all my life, but I can learn to deal with them in a healthy manner, and so can Hunter. Hunter is a beacon of hope for all of us who struggle with mental illness.

Also physical abuse is shown by Hunters actions
First: there’s a scene in the episode “Collecting Palisman” (I think that’s how you spell it)
Where Belos strikes at Hunter and if Hunter weren’t to move his head just slightly he probably would’ve been cut.
Second: It’s the thing’s he says “The emperor is not a merciful man.” “Cause there’s nothing more worse then disappointing someone you thinks your special.” “I can’t go back empty handed!” “Well where I come from even chanced half to be earned.” Ect
Third: Tensing up “Collecting palisman” when Belos strikes Hunter you can see he also tenses up at the end and just lets it happen
Same in the episode “Sports --“ (I forgot the rest) where Darius looks like he’s gonna hit Hunter
He tenses up expecting to get hit, again in “hollow mind” where we see one of Belos’s memories he comes back from eclipse lake giving the key to Belos. Hunter tenses up when he snatches the key from him.
Fourth: there’s a hint he wears a blue ribbon meaning: Child abuse prevention.

The reason you may not have been diagnosed is because C-PTSD, while a recognized disorder in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), is a more recent disorder and is not listed in the DSM-5. Therefore, a lot of counselors in the United States may not consider it a valid diagnosis or may not even know of its existence if they're a little outdated. Don't be discouraged if you don't get the diagnosis you need - but a good mental health professional will know what you have and how to help you. Good luck!

In “Labyrinth Runners” I think the only reason Hunter wasn’t effected as much as the others around Gus was because he was used to having flashbacks of horrible memories… probably hurt a little more though since it was magic but not as much as it was hurting for example Grey (as he was literally laying on the ground in pain when he himself is literally the coven head of the illusionists)

I feel like it’s part of his self esteem issues. His only source of self worth at that point is his ability to serve others. He thinks that if he isn’t “useful” to Belos, then his life doesn’t have any value at all.
Like Hunter says, “There’s nothing worse than disappointing someone who thinks that you’re special.”

He’s my favorite for a reason. I have PTSD and I have noticed similar symptoms with Hunter. Especially the panic attacks, flashbacks, and nightmares. As a kid I would get those A LOT and it hurts me because even in my dreams I couldn’t stop what was happening. Of course, I still experience this, but it was 10x worse. And it led me to angry outbursts. When someone was yelling or I can hear someone fighting, I tend to run outside and cover my ears.
So, it makes me feel sad whenever I see Hunter experiences the same things as me. I never had anyone like his new friend group so it’s just nice. I should’ve taken that trigger warning though because I almost cried because I tend to be in denial 🧍‍♀️

So many of the scenes with Hunter hurting hurt me nearly to the point of tears every time. I really believe it’s not hard to tell that something about him wasn’t “right”, the first few times I saw him/saw his reaction to things.
Thing is; I know (at least starting a few years ago) what plenty of CLOSE people did to me was wrong, but I also don’t always feel like they did anything worth the extreme reactions I got because of me admitting them. I feel like a whiney bitch if I complain or feel something over it, so I try to just laugh at it and myself. No matter how hard I try to make the full me understand that I’m not just a whiney little bitch, it hasn’t worked. Probably because I’m still stuck in a bad environment, but it’s nowhere as bad as it used to be. It doesn’t matter how many times I’m told the things people have done to me were unforgivable, I still cannot feel it. I know they hurt me, but I also don’t. Hunter is more than likely the same in a way, definitely split in more ways than one. Manipulative people just love taking advantage of anyone they can, especially the nice or already hurt people. It’s disgusting
