    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) gives the ultimate sacrifice for his friends.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is fondly regarded as being the closest in spirit to the 1966-69 TV series that spawned it. Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) escapes the tedium of a desk job to join Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) on another space mission. While boldly going where no man etc. etc., Kirk crosses the path of his old enemy Khan (Ricardo Montalban), who as any die-hard Trekker can tell you, was the chief antagonist in the 1966 Trek TV episode "Space Seed." Leading a crew of near-savage space prisoners, Khan insinuates himself into the Genesis Project, which is designed to introduce living organisms on long-dead planets. Intending to harness this program for his own despotic purposes, Khan engages in battle with the Enterprise crew.

People always say that the best line of Wrath was Shatner's KHAN! But that moment when he looses Spock, when he just lets out that whisper of "no", that had more emotion in it than any shout that could echo through space.

    • @jameswilker1774

You nailed it and with Kirk never in a position to ever lose plays so well into it. Cheating on the test even and all the sudden he is faced with the loss of a true mentor, true friend and trusted advocate setting the example of "putting the needs of the many ahead of the needs of a few". The newer Khan remake lacked a monstrous villain and void of the emotion. The new series could take many lessons from the last 25 minutes of this Star Trek.

And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new worldÂa world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect, to nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human."

"I never took the Kobayashi Maru test until now. What do you think of my solution?" I love that line for a couple of reasons. First, subsequent portrayals of Spock tended to treat him as a kind of walking machine - more like Mr. Data in TNG. Spock in TOS was a much more well rounded character. Though he was often somewhat cold in his demeanor, he still had a very droll, cynical, even sarcastic wit.
Secondly, it encapsulates the whole theme of the movie. Kirk archly told Saavick after she took the test that how we face death is as important as how we face life. Kirk is celebrated for his "solution" to the test, but in fact it was just a cop-out. Meanwhile, Kirk begins the film in a funk because he's contemplating the ultimate "no-win scenario": growing old and facing his ultimate mortality. Even at the midway mark he is still in self pity mode, confessing to Carol Marcus that he feels old and worn out, and laments the life he could have had. But in the scene, he sees how Spock faces the test: head on, and pretty much the opposite of Kirk in every other way too. Spock is selfless to the last. In his dying moments he teaches Kirk the ultimate lesson of the test: the importance of leading one's life with dignity and purpose at all times, even in the face of advancing age and death.

Leo Monera ... I know it's been a long time since you made your comment but the five thumbs up really triggered me. Boldy Go. Boldy. Like Goldie. Or moldy. Or oldie. Boldy.
Its five year mission, to BOLDLY go where no man has gone before.
FIVE people gave thumbs up for a misspelled part of a classic introduction. Wow.
I suppose that Shatner might have slipped and said BOLDY during the recording session, but it didn't make it into the opening narration.
For TNG, Patrick Stewart did a revised version with a couple changes but he didn't say Boldy, either.
Wait a minute. Geordi was kidnapped by spacetards. Maybe they said Boldy.
Could be a glitch in the Borg hive mind. Maybe sometimes when they start talking to people they are going to assimilate, they say, we are the Boldy. As their would-be victims laugh at them, they might say, What? What did we say? Why are you laughing at us? You're meanies. Waaaaah! And then they run back to their safe space.
If Ms. Hawn was into archery, she would use her Goldie bow.
Until your Boldy Go., I was a bit sad about the passing of Mr. Nimoy. I wonder if his buddies called him Lenny.

I didn’t care, I was just happy to be going to the movies… From the start of the movie I was captivated. I will never forget Spock’s death scene. You could hear sobs and cries all around the sold out crowd. I had never experienced grief like that before. As a 12 year old, I cried cause everyone else was crying including my friend and his dad. My dad and I have this little point on one of ours ears. I’m the only one of his kids that have this same feature. When he saw it on my ear when I was about 6 years old, he said, ‘Hey, Kimmie! You have my Spock ear!’ It wasn’t until I was 12 years old that I found out I share Leonard Nimoy’s birthday, March 26th. I’m 51 now and still have that same point just like my dad. I’ve always loved Spock but that somehow made me feel close to him. RIP Mr. Nimoy 😢🖖🫶

I noticed my wife crying when we saw this a billion years ago. We were just highschool kids back then. This is when i knew this sweet cute bookworm was gonna be my precious life partner. I still look at her when she's deep in sleep hoping that she's having good dreams...

I just have to say, when i thought he was gone for good, i freaked out i was like "NO THEY CAN'T KILL SPOCK!!!!!!" i was furious. And the look on jims face! Is enough to make a vulcan cry! I would hate to lose my best friend, and he couldn't do anything! :( :(

There was an interesting article recently about the 40th Anniversary of ST 2. Here's a couple excerpts about Spock's death:
[Leonard Nimoy confessed that he felt “some unease, some fear” when the moment came to kill Spock. In his memoir, Nimoy described being “an emotional wreck, in deep pain” on set. He wasn’t alone. As they filmed his death scene - Spock choking on radiation in the warp drive chamber, while reaching for Kirk’s hands through the glass - Nicholas Meyer realised his crew were in tears. “Imagine my surprise when I see my cinematographer sobbing,” he laughs. “And my production supervisor is sobbing… the crew is all sobbing!”
Producers were already backtracking. Harve Bennet instructed Nimoy to do a Vulcan “mind meld” on McCoy before perishing - apparently transferring his soul - and a final shot was inserted of Spock’s coffin on a freshly-brought-to-life Genesis planet. Meyer resisted it. “I got into a tug of war,” he says. “People were saying, ‘You’ve got to end it on a hopeful note!’ At the time I felt passionately that this was unforgivable… perhaps I was mistaken.”]

"Jim, out of danger?" OMG that's a powerful line considering the situation. Shows the true nature of this great character. Superb movie. They will never top this with any reboot. They need to establish an entirely new set of characters to continue the lore and just build them up so that we care about them as we did with TOS. They did it with TNG, so why not now? Rebooting and changing this franchise and these great characters with "alternate" timelines and other nonsense is just not going to cut it.

@@rkt739 Actually it's "Jim.....(long pause) ship...out of...danger?" But yeah powerful line and heartbreaking scene, when Kirk finally has to confront his arrogance, and his own mortality and the loss of his best friend, dare I say Brother. Let's face it, Spock, Kirk and McCoy were a band of Brothers, with Scotty tossed in. Uhura was always an essential part of the team. Hell all of the bridge crew were, but the core three were Spock, Kirk and McCoy.
