Everyone knows that once the west loses its edge in lithography EUV and China closes that last gap, most western chip companies and chip companies of US-allied nations are toast. Even EDA tools are becoming more difficult for the US to maintain leadership. Photoresists from Japan are no longer irreplaceable as China has achieved self-sufficiency in that segment. Soon, China's semiconductor supply chain system will be 100% self-reliant when need be and every segment within it will be extremely competitive and world class.
Amazing…who would have thought Chinese ingenuity would have strived so quickly to place the country’s top chip developers to catch up and create their own 5nm chips to the point when China can be competitive without the Western tech. Well done China!
Your last statement says it all; the free market is great but if you only support it when it suits your needs it might not work as it should. The liberal western order always promotes such nonsense when they have dominance, it's used to undermine and takeover any challenger. Britain used this argument in the nineteenth century when they had technological leads in manufacturing, and the US opposed this so they could develop their own industries. Now the west has lost its leading role in industrial development and seeing its hegemony breaking down, well, now it's tantrums.

As someone in a business almost 100% reliant on Nvidia's CUDA, I really hope China can catch up faster and make a more affordable and accessible alternative. And I also hope we will see consumer GPUs from China. I am really sick of Nvidia's GPU pricing BS but at the same time, hopeless and keep buying.
Good summary. The last point is particularly important: China has laid the groundwork for their domestic population's needs to continue to drive technological innovation. While many debate about the dangers of "general AI" and create mostly pointless "scorecards", China has worked to incorporate these technologies into the "Gigafactory" model that is used by Tesla and many others. This way "targeted AI" aids in the development of the economy by making manufacturing more efficient. In the future I hope it will be used to help reduce and recycle waste. Compare this to "AI" companies in the West which are limited by the financialized economic conditions - AI can ONLY be used to help extract more rents and promote consumerism... of products made in China.
You'd think by now that the US would have learned that telling China "No!" keeps backfiring in spectacular fashion. They haven't though and I doubt they will any time soon.
The easiest way to reduce Nvidias advantage is to reduce the computational needs for AI, could a method using better pre trained models be developed? Or with pre-trained model bolt on a faster incremental module to reduce the need for powerful GPU being needed.
Nvidia probably even ahead in this area. A few weeks ago i think nvidia released some sort of ChatGPT competitor but it need less computational resource than chatGPT.
Obviously there seem to be different systems in vogue in the overall application of computer high tech. On top of this competition, there are also security issues affecting any system. China's consumption matrix is obviously accentuated by it massive population. Hence to each its own.

Good analysis, and who cares if this is not your actual voice, you can use GenAI effectively to improve this video, even though I personally will not use GenAI to improve my Mandarin in online videos because I would not improve. Many Chinese people fear criticism of their pronunciation, but actually, you can not improve unless you practice, and we all make mistakes. As for me, I learned a lot from this video, and I am planning to give public speaking presentations on the AI chip supply chain and the Global GenAi Smartphone Revolution. So please use your AI algorithm to send me updated information. AI Systems computer power is right now a race between the USA + China, and healthy competition is fine. As for Nvidia, I think they announced an AI R&D Center in Vietnam recently, so I do not think they care about China's actions. In my opinion, lessons that need to be learned are of globalization, which is all companies and technologies migrate to their most convenient location for a while, and that innovation right now is in both the USA & China and will also migrate into many countries. Countries and entrepreneurs are all hungry to acquire AI technology because the barriers have been flattened to allow that to happen. At the end of the day, they all need 1) AI algorithms, 2) Massive Data sets, and 3) Power of computing inference of data from LLMs but also to build AI cloud/data centers, which need massive amounts of energy. I honestly do not think the USA or China will completely dominate the AI supply chain alone. I could be wrong, don't shoot me I'm not the AI piano player 魏卡爾
Re the end of the video, free markets aren't so great. Would China be innovating like this without US restrictions on NVIDIA chips? NVIDIA is just the latest example of a tech company becoming a monopoly and then keeping its position by buying up competitors and lobbying, rather than continuing to innovate. I'm happy for China, but don't forget that you built your economy with heavy government involvement. You can be proud of it.
