Sandhill Cranes Migration

  • Likely the largest animal migration in North America, hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes converge on the Platte River in Nebraska every Spring. In this video, cranes which have landed for the night are disrupted by a Bald Eagle. Once the eagle has passed they 'parachute' back to their night resting area on the shallow sandbars of the Platte. Recorded at the Rowe Audubon Sanctuary, Gibbons, Nebraska; March 23, 2023. The vanguard at the head of the landed cranes marches forward, constantly making room for the waves of cranes behind. Maybe this is how crane families stay together throughout thousands of miles of migration.

In many cultures, the crane bird is seen as a symbol of longevity, peace, and happiness. 1:01
