  • -Album: SHINJI HOSOE WORKS VOL. 3 (Disc 2, Track 10)
-Composer: SHINJI HOSOE, Arranged by YUZO KOSHIRO
    -Publisher: SuperSweep (2013)
-Artwork: Namco Game Sound Express Vol. 4 Booklet
A dream come true for me. Yuzo Koshiro, the God of videogame music in the 16-bit era, arranging this particular theme composed by another living legend of game music composition, Shinji Hosoe.
Heavily influenced by 70's and 80's electronica (Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra...), the sound Shinji Hosoe managed to create for this videogame using Namco's revolutionary arcade system board System2 was very impressive for a game back in 1990.
The Dragon Saber soundtrack is one of his most memorable works, along with Dragon Spirit (Dragon Saber's prequel), Ridge Racer, Xenosaga, etc. and it is also especially regarded by the author himself.
This particular song, Center of the Earth or 地じん (chijin) played during stage 4 is definitely my favorite in the game, as excellent as the rest of them also are. The original FM version sounds very good already, but with this arrangement, Yuzo Koshiro takes the original song to a whole new rock and jazz level and turns it into what is, in my humble opinion, one of the best, most uplifting and energizing songs he's ever recorded, while keeping the original vibe, spirit and uber-catchy melodies intact.
This is track 10 in Disc 2 from the recently released album:
SHINJI HOSOE WORKS VOL. 3, also containing another arranged theme and the OST of the game, as well as Dragon Spirit OST remade using System2 capabilities.

Imagine if every single part of the original melody got played entirely on rock/metal guitar at least once in the same arrangement.

The designs probably inspired magic knight rayearth. Notice the armour, and the creatures.

Why didn't it hit me four years ago that this game's female characters (and some of the male ones) are the cutest things ever?

hahaha I can't believe to get a comment from you four years later. The greatness of the Internet. So true though, what you say. I personally love late 80s and 90's anime style character design... Akemi Takada was my heroin-e

This sounds just like Konami's great music from the old days.

alienspacebat Indeed! probably that's why I liked it in the first place. I'm absolutely mad about Konami music :-) you just have to see how many videos I uploaded with Konami music, and more specifically, shoot'em ups... nothing beats Gradius or Twinbee in that department :-) Thanks for your comment :D

alienspacebat Oh yes, lower than low, considering what Konami was in the 90s...

Jordi Vinyals Thankfully, their staff from the real golden age left to form Treasure, and we still have them.

alienspacebat And we have all the games they produced back then too to replay them to death :P I sure need my periodical dose of any Gradius, any Parodius, Super Castlevania 4, Axelay, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Super Contra 3 and Pop'n Twinbee... probably my most replayed games ever with Zelda ALttP.

Lots of 80's and 90's anime had good music like this. Another reason why I prefer older anime.
