  • Shutter Island is a great movie which needs your full involvement and presence of mind. Although there are many opinions on whether Teddy is Andrew Laeddis or not and looks like director also kept it open ended.
    But there are lot of clues in the movie which points that Teddy is Andrew Laeddis, and if you watch the movie carefully then you will find that the great acting and expressions of actors are also compliment this thing.
    Here are few major scenes in support of the fact that Teddy Daniels is Andrew Laeddis.

    Idk why people think this is an open ended scene. Open to interpretation. It’s not. The last scene by itself proves he was sane again.

      Many cases where a person was brainwashed and committed suicide because of the brainwashing. Both real-life and fiction. Nothing strange about such a thought at all. If the narrative suggested in the beginning of the movie stayed through to the end of the movie, that is EXACTLY what would make sense the most. Killing the main character wouldn't be a profound conclusion. But making the main character kill himself is a profound conclusion. What you say proves NOTHING.

Like holy shit, literally thoughout the whole movie it's told to you that lobotomization is still in use for extremely problematic patients and at the very end, during the final confrontation Dr Cawlet TELLS HIM DIRECTLY that if this role playing experiment does not work and andrew remains insane, the wardens and supervisoes will have him lobotomization. You seriously need to watch the movie again. They do not execute patients in that facility( I can go on and on and give more examples, but hopefully that'd be enough to enlighten you).

      @The Great Indian Podcast There is a fire and water symbolism throughout the whole movie - whenever there is fire in a scene,he is always hallucinating or some way "escaping" the reality of what truly happen.
      Meanwhile water represents the truth,and whenever he has dreams,it is always raining,or when he is on the boat,he is sick,because he doesn't want to live in the truth.-> that is the reason he has sea sickness,he developed PTSD and is afraid of the truth.
      Another proof of that is when he is sitting with Mrs Bridget,we see the scene with his eyes,and there is no water in the glass when she's drinknig,but when she gets up and leaves,and from different perspective,the glass is half empty because she drank

    I totally understand that people support the fact that this is actually a building for psychos and that DiCaprio's real name is Andrew,but what if the director actually wanted to brainwash you the way these people did to Teddy? The guards were scared first of all "knowing" that the gun is a toy. A real gun which most likely got replaced with a toy and was put on the table so that Teddy can reach it and,according to plan,make him think that it was actually fake from the beginning. Every move Teddy made was recorded and the people in the island knew how to react before Teddy made his next move. The camera in the end went to the lighthouse,meaning that the whole lobotomy story IS actually true,as a result to Teddy not being brainwashed and living up to the fact that as he couldn't live the island,he'd better die as a good man (a marine that is) than live as a toy to the Nazi's with no personality,but the one that they try to plant in his head. I don't know people,this plot that I just believe that's true seems way more appealing and interesting to me than the Andrew one,although this is really a debatable one. I love this movie,one of the best that have fucked up my mind and leave me wondering.

      This could actually be very true. Remember the Tie he had that Dolores gave him? If he was actually a patient how would he have it in his possession. He had to have brought it with him. And the whole conversation he had with George in Ward C was hella suspicious. Also the first scene on the boat was questionable because he wouldn't just wake up on a boat without remembering how he got there. Although the Andrew Laeddis story line is more likely to be there are a lot of different ways you can view the movie. Total mind Fuck.

    Just watched it again yesterday and it's true, you have to watch it multiple times to understand it better cause you'll miss out on some small things that are important. In the end I believe he was sane, but acted like he wasn't so he could get lobotomized, I feel like the guilt was to much that the only way he could find real peace is by getting lobotomized. An escape from all the guilt, which is why he said towards the end "what would be better, to live as a monster or to die as a hero" basically saying, he saw himself as a monster and what he was becoming from the guilt of his family, and if he died at least he be remembered as a hero who fought in the war. Even Sheehan was confused by what he said, maybe in that brief moment he knew he was sane.

    The writer himself doesnt have a clear answer, and has decided to leave us mindfucked which is why this is one of the best movies I've seen . On one hand , this video shows multiple proofs that teddy is insane , on the other hand there alot of proofs that proves teddy is sane :
    1- Why would they let an insane patient roam around the island and climb rocks by himself? He spent an entire night on his own , in a cave, an insane patient? Of course if he is sane they wouldnt mind him roaming around on his own because he has no where to go. Also we saw what he did to the doctor when he showed the sedative, therefore if he really is insane, he cant be trusted on his own which makes me wonder why would they let him roam alone...
    2- The pilot on the ship looks like he doesnt have a clue about what's going on and is talking to teddie like he is a real marshal
    3- the gun they are showing at the end is chuck's gun
    4- Who the hell was the girl in the cave and why does she know alot about what goes on in the hospital? When teddy is hallucinating, the writer made sure we knew he was, but in that cave it looked like she was real...

    All the arguments about the fact that he is crazy crash into 3 impenetrable arguments proving that he is not crazy:
    1. According to history, this is the 50s in the USA, why for the sake of 1 psycho who killed his family to arrange such a performance with the participation of the guard, all staff, the boat and patients? Well, he would be the son of the president .... But he is an ordinary person . Wouldn’t it be easier to put it into consumption or to bring the vegetable to the state of the tablets ?! The answer is obvious.
    2. How to explain that record of the patient (“run”) if she knew that this was all a representation and an experiment. Why would she intrigue and tug a psycho killer with her notes ?? The answer is obvious.
    3. The last frames of the picture clearly show and give us a lighthouse, on which "supposedly nothing is happening." Why show it, all the more outlining such alarming music ?? The answer is obvious.
    By the way, in addition, I add that the last phrase of di caprio: "Live a sa monster or die as a good man," can also be interpreted in two ways. On the one hand, he seems to be asking this question to himself (the psycho version), and on the other hand, you can take it in a straightforward way, like referring to a "fake partner" (meaning: "I, am, di-caprio, will die as a good man, but you’re a ruffalo, you will be forced to live as a monster "(plot version)).

    OK, so the majority are saying that Teddy is in fact Andrew and that the ending scene was him basically accepting reality as he didn't respond to the doctor calling out 'Teddy', BUT there's just one thing I can't seem to understand. Why was the very last thing we see in the film the lighthouse? Doesn't that suggest that the whole lobotomy theory might be true? I mean think about it, this whole film is about detail and the little signs we need to look for. Surely that 2 second lighthouse scene at the very end meant something, or else, whats the point of adding it? Why on earth would it be the last thing we see?

    • @derrick12345fire
      @derrick12345fire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They show the lighthouse because they are going to lobotomize him. In the previous scene the doctor tells him that if he dosent accept reality, they will be forced to do it as they have no hope of bringing him back. That last scene shows that going to happen as he "chooses" to be Teddy.

    • @zootsoot2006
      @zootsoot2006 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      But a normal hospital wouldn't perform lobotomies in a lighthouse. Why would the film shoot to the lighthouse accompanied by ominous music just after establishing that he's going for the lobotomy? Plus what someone above wrote, how did the main doctor know the line 'Why are you so wet baby?' from Andrew Laeddis's real life when he's supposedly in complete denial about his real life so would never have told the doctor what she said. In other words there's a real case to be made for Teddy Daniels being real.

      zoot soot google mk ultra

    • @derrick12345fire
      @derrick12345fire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First, this wasn't a normal hospital. The doctor knew the line as it was mentioned that he previously had relapses back to reality but it only lasted for awhile. He could have also knew the line as in Teddy's world, Andrew says that line in a different context from the actual story (his wife after drowning the kids) so he could have said it many times while acting as Teddy.

    • @zootsoot2006
      @zootsoot2006 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Really? Not a normal hospital? Not according to Teddy, you're right, but according to what you're saying is the real interpretation it is. OK it was a hospital for the criminally insane but it would still have to be run according to official protocol, which would preclude lighthouses as a suitable location for major surgery. And according to Teddy's world he only had a wife, who died in a fire in their apartment, there's no mention of kids. No, the whole point of the reenactment with Rachel Solande is to implant the idea of a wife killing her kids, which with all the drugs they feed him, creates the suggestion in Teddy's mind, by the end of the movie, that his own wife committed such an act. The idea of suggestion is perfectly encapsulated in the line 'Why are you so wet baby?', which is supposed to implant into Teddy's the end of the story between him and his wife. If anyone doubts that Teddy Daniel's is a sane person after they watch this movie they seriously need to rewatch it and account for a lot of facts as given. OK Chuck didn't know how to handle a gun but that's the whole point, he was a plant from the hospital all along. And what about the women's hastily written 'Run'? Why would she bother writing that for a person she knew was a patient and had absolutely no power over the situation? All come backs welcome, I think this is possibly one of the most puzzling and most important movies ever made

    This is the most basic analysis I’ve ever seen lol. Obviously the simpler more obvious answer is Teddy is Laeddis. The whole point of the movie is perspective and the unreliable narrator. Either “Teddy” is insane, or the people running Ashcliff are doing something, either way one is “lying” to the point you can’t tell. Pointing out the most obvious clues to one explanation doesn’t make it correct, if it did this wouldn’t be as good of a film lol

    There is no twist. I don't understand why nobody noticed the band-aid at his head? Plaster was there from the start of the movie. It is clearly from the Lobotomy... It is interesting that nobody mentions it?

    1 why would they be afraid of him if they'd gave him a toy gun ?
    2 why do you think the old lady scene proves he's andrew ?
    4 why do you think andrew/teddy really beat noyce maybe they beat him and forced him to play the role to make teddy think he is andrew ? why would noyce tell him about the light house if the experiments at the light house were fake and not real ? that wouldnt help teddy get back to reality that would support his theory of strange things happening on the island
    5 i dont get you ppl you say that teddy is living a fake life which his mind created and that all his conspiracy about the experiments inside the light house is just his imagination and not real if that was true why do you think they showed us the light house in the end that means the experiments are in fact real and that they are done inside the light house that MEANS HIS CONSPIRACY THEORY IS REAL

      1 because he is violent as hell, doesn't need a gun to be hurt people
      2 it's not proof, just another very logical hint he is indeed a patient: they told the old lady to be quiet, play along and not to leak their little experiment. just like you tell children to keep a secret, it's difficult for them and they also do the 'shhh' motion
      regarding your theory: why is the fact they meet at the light house proof his conspiracy theory is true?
      other scenes that show he is a patient: a) the doctor (or "his partner") had no clue how to use the gun and the holster when they arrived on the island, the camera really focuses on that in this scene. if he was a detective, he knew how to handle a gun - shows he is just a doctor, doing his best act for andrew. b) the scene with rachel in the cave doesn't make sense. how is she supposed to live unnoticed on the island? how does she find food? clean herself? it's a small island, they'd find her easily. c) there are even more little small scenes, but i haven't seen the film for a while. in the comments are a lot more hints.

      Have you ever seen how real cops react to a potential dangerous person with no weapon? A known dangerous person without a gun is still a threat. Anyone would be on edge knowing someone who is violent and highly skilled at fighting is running around free on the island. I guarantee you wouldn't feel safe either.

    At the last scene where Teddy confronts Chuck he understands what is awaiting him for not agreeing that he is Andrew. They want to lobotomise him so he does not reveal the dirty things they make at the Shutter Island. At the last scene he says, i dont know whats better to live as a monster or to die as a good man? Chuck then calls him by his name Teddy because he feels bad for plotting him to his doom.

    Im sorry .. i think hes perfectly normal and the facility tried to get him to look like the crazy guy... for a few reasons..but one being at the end .when he said .hed rather die as a good man than live as a monster ....which imo implies he was taking direct jab at chuck..teddy surrendered completely to the guys on the island ...their was no other way he could resist it .

    Another hint: At the beginning Teddy is feeling dizzy at the boat because of the water, according to his words. But actually it is because his family was drown in the lake as we later find out. It's another consequence of his feeling of guilt.

    • @Me-dd7jv
      @Me-dd7jv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you believe in that the teddy is real thatbis the theory on how he knew him:
      Teddy said that goerge is the one that told him about the island.
      And if you believe that andrew is real that is the theory how he knew him:
      Head doctor said that andrew is most dangereous patient and we see teddy mentioning that the place george is at is where they keep the most dangereous patients, so they might know each other from there.

    I don't think Leo's character would go so quietly if he wasn't insane, unless he thought he'd make it back to the world some day. And if he was insane they should of thrown at least a vague clue about a memory problem, if not straight up mentioning something from right before his boat ride.

    • @imtalkingtoyou1841

      With his family, all the reasons to live for had passed. He went with the lobotomy precisely because he was sane. The haunting memories from the times of war and of his family were unbearable, exact reason why he became mad and started to live as a different identity to begin with. Like the psychiatrist said, they played along with the game of detective for it would be the last hope of getting back his sanity. Which it did. The whole point was: "To live as a monster, or to die as a good man"
