    So, in case you are interested who watches your videos: I am a 70 year old, happily married female. Retired accountant, non painter, non creative person.
    Why have I watched? Your videos are soothing, interesting, and educational.
    What do I think of you? I only know you from the half dozen videos I have watched. You appear to be an old soul.
    I wish you a joyous life.

    I really dig your videos man. I greatly appreciate the commentary of the up and downsides and being so vocal about your flaws and strengths. The genuine honesty about your art that comes thru speaks volumes to me and that is what keeps me watching my friend. I've always been intimidated by the leap from drawing to painting and you've honestly have helped me in getting over that. So I thank you. Keep killing it bro

    I'd rather say this privately, but you might find it easier to start with Gamblin Venetian Red and Gamblin warm white as a basic flesh, plus two more mixtures, one with tiny additions of G Naphtol for a warm flesh and another with tiny additions of G Perylene for a cool flesh. In parenthesis, I use a fantastic Williamsburg replacement Naples Yellow which is a soft yellow, the nearest to the old lead colour, if I need to make a more buttery flesh. I might cool down the Venetian red and Perylene with brush ends of untramarine. As you are going, re-check your drawing so that corners of eyes don't shift, or the ends of the mouth. If you choose to paint chiaroscuro, make sure your highlights don't go too bright. It is sometimes easier to adapt the Ansel Adams' Zone System of tones, with their descriptions, and literally mix up a series of stepped tones in between your chosen lightest and darkest value. But don't change your basic decisions in terms of tonal range. Great attitude!

    I am a self taught artist, so yes I would love to see more traditional stuff, but I do like your style overall. Could you do a video maybe on going to art school to become an artist or not going. I have seen a lot of videos on TH-cam where people seem to be on the fence about that subject. I would love to go to an Atelier. 🙏🏽

    Admittedly, I am not particularly well versed in modern TH-cam art videos, but you have a unique talent for teaching. I'm actually gardening and came in to grab some lights because it's well after dark here in Minneapolis. It's also cold as hell so I took a moment to warm up for a second. That 'second' has turned into an hour in front of your videos and I had to check in to see where you are at in the moment, but also to subscribe and turn on notifications-especially after viewing this last one. You are the perfect example for inspiring my 16 yr old kid who is about to have a lot of time on her hands. This will give her an opportunity to check out your channel and see how relaxed and open great art really can be. Everything is 100% perspective in our lives and how you feel about the life you're living is always hinged upon this truth. I know that I am learning a lot and being reminded of things that I've forgotten about the beauty of creating. Thank you for sharing this process. I'd certainly like to see more! Congratulations on biting the bullet and buckling down to schooling. I know that many worry about being influenced in ways that they don't want to be that will change who they are as individuals but it sounds like you've finally found the perfect perspective that will allow for you to flourish and grow even further as an incredible multi-faceted artist. I look forward to your next session!

    Thanks for posting all of your videos brother. They are fun, free, and inspiring. This one specifically is so cool because you are learning the rules so that you can break them later......which is so cool to me. You’re already one hell of an artist, yet you seem so humble about learning more. There’s always more to learn. Keep it up. I wish you the best.

    There's an Atelier school in my city (Boston) that's really reasonable. They do an entire Atelier program (that can be covered by tuition) or you can do Atelier classes/workshops/private lessons. I'm considering signing up for the summer courses. Traditional drawing and painting are at the core of all art styles, so I'd love to improve my observational skills.

  • @dexterousd
    @dexterousd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Try using a glass surface as a palette man ( duct tape the edges so you don't slice yourself), much easier to wipe and keep tidy. Also means less paint gets absorbed into the surface, so you waste less. Keep up the good work!

    • @dexterousd
      @dexterousd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh and if you need to keep certain mixes from drying (leaving them overnight etc), you can submerge it in water for a few days and it won't get water damaged like wood would.

    You had a good subject to paint! I've never done a serious self portrait, but many characatures, cuz I'm funny that way. The painting itself looked so much more serious than you actually look when on video. But really a job well done! Just a note: I would have liked to see the hair down for texture.
