      It's not bread but panettone! In Italy it's considered the normality: in every different town, we put in wine some kind of sweetness. In my town, for exemple, we put "uccelletti di S. Antonio" in it. Hope you enjoyed

      It was still wine they were drinking in prison. When Russell chuckles and says "That's the good grape juice" he's basically saying it's wine that they smuggled in using a grape juice jug.

    I love Pesci in this scene. The subtle expression he gives, as he is mildly surprised that he knows Italian. And then the little furtive looks he gives him as Frank isn't trying to impress him by lying. Pesci looks like he is studying him. Sizing him up. The fact Frank gives it to him straight actually means more to him, I think. Frank explaining that he was afraid and that he prayed for survival, Pesci gives this very quiet, "Yeaaaah." Like, I believe you. Thank you for showing me respect by being yourself. You're not loud and a braggart, and that's something I can work with.

    • @hansolo631
      @hansolo631 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      idk. This movie has problems, to put it mildly. The aging stuff is a mess, it makes the movie feel bizarre - you're watching an 80 year old man try his best to be spry and it pulls you out, so badly. A crime drama with a 250 million dollar budget that screwed up on... the cgi? If it was anyone but Scorcese, he'd have been roasted alive for this. He'd never live it down.
      Beyond all that, the movie isn't great. Pesci is ok, but this isn't even in the same ballpark as his work in casino and goodfellas, which are 2 of the most fascinating and thrilling portrayals in the medium's history. Pacino is fun to watch, but at this point, he's a caricature too.
      Sheeran has no credibility either. I think it's unlikely he did Hoffa.
      I liked alot of the supporting actors and their beats. There's some really cool scenes in here. The anastasia hit, the fish scene, the backseat hit, etc.

    • @ivozaccagni
      @ivozaccagni 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hansolo631 I understand all the criticism, after all The Irishman was one of the most anticipated films of all time, which had a troubled development and the fear of the producers... However, I think that the main mistake is to think of this film as a continuation of Goodfellas or, worse, of Casino. They've nothing in common, it's a completely different story and it's gigantic. Only Scorsese could have brought such an important story on the American century to the screen - and he did it again, with Killers of the Flower Moon: Hoffa, the Kennedys, Cuba, CIA, the mafia financial capitalism and politics underworld that operates in illegality. Frank Sheeran may be a charlatan and have less than half of the things that the film tells, it does not matter, the historical events of the film are authentic. Technically the CGI is impeccable; there are other, more effective ways to rejuvenate or age an actor, but a sort of moral question arises on how such solutions could be used outside of the cinema, and it's a huge problem. De Niro and Pesci were monumental in portraying those characters, and Pacino was simply immense: 3/4 of the film is filled with scenes where the interpretation of the three actors surpasses perfection. There will come a time when we will be forced to realize that we will no longer live similar experiences because greatness and majesty of those actors will end with their existences... We've already seen Goodfellas and Scarface; The Irishman is something else. Totally.

Know's he is a hard worker and not a rat from his cousin, speaks Italian, but isn't actually Italian, so he'll only ever be an associate, doesn't bullshit or act tough, has killed before, and now has a "whatever happens happens" mentality..... perfect mix for a loyal house painter who ain't going to fuck up jobs you tap him for.

    • @PiCheZvara

      Exactly. This isn't a real friendship. Pesci is just stringing him along and looking for a loyal lapdog who he can keep around and he'll make him feel important and massage his ego too.
      And Sheeran thought this meant real relationship and friendship. You always saw what it really is when he tried to push back, like with killing Hoffa - whenever he started having his own opinions, he was immediately intimidated and put in his place.
      And to be this kind of lapdog for the mob, he sacrificed the relationship with his daufghter who was the one who was really pure and good of heart, and he even tried to act all loyal when shitting in his pants in a retirement home with all these scumbags dead.
      Actually, to a large degree...such a wasted life, especially because he fucked up his family to be something like this.

      I'm not a fan of the digital work. For a scene I could deal with it. But, for an entire movie...it didn't convince me. I was always aware of it. Better they should have had another, younger actor play younger Sheeran, or digitally map DeNiro's face onto a younger man's body. They can't make DeNiro sound or move like a young man. And, in some scenes it just looks bad. Like when he beats up the butcher for touching his daughter. He's VERY clearly an old man who looks like he's stomping a spider, and a scene that is supposed to be tense ends up being comical. It just doesn't sell. DeNiro's acting performance isn't the problem. It's just not convincing physically. He moves and sounds like an old man in every scene. With Pesci it didn't matter much because of the nature of his role.

    Pesci sometimes feels like he's trying to talk in a Italian-American accent but sometimes he throws in some REALLY good and strict Sicialian accent which is very difficult if you are not familiar with Italian to begin with

    Joe pesci doesn't speak italian very well in this scene (I'm from Naples, Italy). That is for being someone who comes from Catania, in the region of Sicily. If the character just said "my parents are from Italy and I learnt some italian by listening to them" I would have believed him more.
    Robert De Niro on the other hand is almost impeccable. In the end they are both master actors so my critic just goes to this small particular. Great movie, great acting.

      It might be because Russel came to America when he was only 3 years old, not sure if it's discussed in the film though.
