Mario Kart makes is hard to achieve 10,000VR and then 20,000VR when you're close to it. When you're around 8-9k or 17-19k, most of the time you're put in a room with people that have less VR then you. So when you get a good placement you'll get very little VR but if you get a bad placement, you lose a lot of VR. It's annoying

i want you to know that everytime i open youtube i check your channel hoping you've uploaded... shortcat is the goat all around, cool personality, good at the game, pleasant voice etc.
The really low VR people might just be splitscreen with higher level friends! I can definitely get an argument for “people will be alright against people as good as their friends, but people playing on their own wont enjoy an inability to win”
I was blown away by Shortcat having 20,000, but after seeing that one player in the lobby with 57,000 only gaining 2 for getting third, I wonder how many games they must have played…
I picked up mk8 deluxe after a while of not playing and only playing casually when I had and felt really discouraged after trying to play online I was suddenly recommended your channel and checked it out. I’ve seen all your videos at this point and now feel so much better about what I need to do to practice and improve, and I have excitement for playing the game again!! Thanks for all your content, you put a lot of effort into explaining everything and it really helps new to competitive players. It’s also super fun to watch! 🙏🏼✨
That's awesome! It's very easy to feel like "i'm doing everything i can" in pretty much anything you learn, until you watch someone achieve better results by doing different things. I'm glad I could help you have more fun!
I don’t play this game or Nintendo at all but this sparked the child in me and for a solid 30 minutes I forgot about all my problems in life. And was so focus on you explaining the game as you played great video.
Watching your videos has inspired me to play online more often, and the things I learned from you and a few other youtubers have taken me from not really playing consistently to going from 4000 to 5000 VR in a single day, and I feel confident that I could make it to 10000 soon too! So thanks for reigniting my passion for this game, even if I will adamantly use the B-Dasher despite its stats 😂

I don't know if you take stupid idea suggestions, but you might want to try max invincibility. I'd recommend BabyRosa/GLA/Off-Road/GoldenGlider. You could also use Petey for high speed.
Hey man, I just got 10,000VR, and I really just have you to thank, you have been so helpful and so much fun to watch! Keep doing what your doing, it’s great!
Mario kart has so many tracks that these anomalies happen for sure. I usually do great on cheese land, but as soon as I start recording, the most insane stuff happens. My waluigi stadium win streak is another example of all my luck concentrating onto one track
I reached 99999 VR back on August 14th 1:43 am. The VR journey took me nearly 8 months... The rooms get tough for real especially the 70,000+ VR players...
@randomworld3861 props to you, man. I definitely don't have the mental capacity to grind vr like that. I started playing a year ago, and I just reached 26k today 😆.
Hope you did it global rather than regional. I see too many 99999 VR players in regional and they're honestly not that good. Their skill most of the time is comparable to a 20000-30000 VR player in global.
I love that strat of bagging/frontrun depending what happens to you. I usually do the same unless it's Cheese Land type of tracks. If I get mario karted, I might as well bag a little

I can't wait to become as good as you are Shortcat! I still have to learn a lot and make better short cuts. I am now at something like 11400 VR and it is very fun now to play online
Been loving the content recently, it brings to light how much skill can go into MK. Just wondering if you would ever consider streaming MK, maybe just grinding VR, or messing around with random combos?
As a player who has 5000 vr only I can tell you how bad grouping is. When I first started playing I would get people in the same range as me but now I get players who are more than double my vr. I’ve seen 20 and even 25k players in my rooms!
@2:45 ish. Thank goodness you said that. I’m in the states but I’m up at night and tend to play against mostly Japanese players. I’ve been taken out by invisible weapons and players. I thought maybe I was just tired. 😅
Congratulations on getting to the realm of 20k players! It's a new era of shortcat content with new tracks (first time Singapore Speedway appeared in your video I think) and new rivals! Also, although I am no expert, but my guess with why they just categorize your VR rather than grouping with people of the same VR is as a *performance shortcat* . If the system computes your VR with those matching up of similar VR, it needs to track said individuals one by one, checks them against your VR, calculates how far your VR is to them, and repeat until it creates a group that averages the VR in the room. Plus the system will do all this all at once (multitask) per player. But if there's a category in advance, the system don't need to check individuals one by one and just look at the tag and stuff them to the closest group. Perhaps some outliers (way higher or lower than the category) appeared here and there due to lack of available players to match up at that instant and the system just f it and put them anywhere available within good connection range so they can deal with the next people waiting. Just my guess though, I am by no means an expert with software, but I think it's likely to be a *shortcat* so there's not much computation for the system to do (less load = less loading times and faster response). Perhaps, online games with silver gold platinum rank or something do something similar to match up faster.
From what I know about coding, I imagine that keeping track of the average VR in a room would be almost as easy as tagging the room with a category like "10k to 20k". It seems like a really simple thing that Nintendo just decided isn't necessary. It would take more work to do for sure, but that work is less than a millisecond per each person who joins or leaves. P.S. Singapore speedway appeared in my "no handling" video!
Oh wow, I never realized that there were such strict categories. But I will say, as someone currently in between 10k and 20k VR, the chaos is real! It feels like everyone is a competent driver but also a gremlin. A part of me wonders if I'll see a similar result once I break the 20k barrier. The ironic thing about playing optimally is that it also makes you predictable to other high-level players. But with good, but not great, players, you can totally get blindsided by something that's so dumb that it shouldn't work, but ends up working because you didn't prepare for it.
I like your content. I'm not even that big of a mario kart fan I barely play it at all. Would write an essay to explain what is great in your content and all that but I have a headache but you'll figure it out on your own do your thing and I'll enjoy it
Thank you for the video! I am very new to Mario Kart 8 Online, and I was at around 1600 VR when I got matched against someone who had, I kid you not, 63k VR. I do not really understand how the system works, and especially now that I've learned 20k is already high, I am very confused as to how that person got 63k VR, and how they got matched against me when I'm a beginner. Everyone else had around the same points as me too! It was on worldwide, maybe an error?
Worldwide is not just matchmaking, you can also join other people's rooms through the "friends" option, instead of worldwide/regional. Also, 2 people of very different VR can get into the same room by playing 2-player online from the same switch. So it's probably one of those that happened!
@@Shortcat321 Ohhh, thank you! That makes sense! So when I joined worldwide, I might've ended up in a room made by friends that had different VR? The guy wasn't teamed up with anyone from his own country. Thank you very much for explaining!
As of current state of playing this game in at 4.5k VR atm I still really love the king boo combo you have a lot ^^ cause king boo is my main too cause he's cute ^^ maybe one day I probably should aim for 10k VR. I don't have the best track knowledge in certain tracks, but I do know certain shortcuts in lot of other tracks! But that last part had me dying XD you litterally outran a blue shell. Which makes me wonder if you are able to outrun it if you had 1 less coin instead of 10. But very nice video shortcat!!
I'm no 200cc expert, but the coins definitely make a difference. Losing 1 coin probably won't make it impossible to outrun, but it would make it less lenient. I'd have to be more perfect with neutral drifting and I won't be allowed to lose as much speed.
As someone who recently hit 10k VR, how I'm pretty sure the matchmaking works is that its categorizes for every 1k up till 10k where then its does it for every 10k
You know I feel like a big reason why the acceleration stat is so much less useful than speed and mini-turbo is because of what other stats it comes with. Having high acceleration has really good synergy with high speed for obvious reasons, but there’s no way you can build your combo to allow for that. Instead acceleration is maxed out when your speed is as LOW as possible, when it objectively makes the least sense to have it high. So when you don’t need it it’s in abundance, and when it would actually be really nice to have you get none. Just some food for thought, great video btw!
My favorite thing so far in MK8 online is being like 1050 rated (maybe 10 races or so online) and having a lobby with multiple 50k+ and a 99999. Good work, Nintendo.

Tl;dr: Race with the kart build with max handling AND traction. Nerd version: Kart challenge: Use the setup with the max value of traction _times_ handling. You said in your handling video that you need traction to actually make use of a high handling stat. Maximizing the product of the two will reward builds that strike a balance of both (10 traction and 10 handling makes 100, while 19 handling and 1 traction makes 19). That way, there’s a “right answer” for what kart to use.
once at 2k VR a japanese player with 40k joined the room and I was so confused because I couldn't understand why nintendo would put someone who was like 20x the VR of the entire room in a room with us lol
Worldwide is absolutely nuts when you hit 20k+ I’m currently at 28k vr or so but every lobby I get put into everyone is above 20k or 30 or higher. I still pull wins often it’s just way more chaotic if you can’t stay in front of the pack.

That way, there’s a “right answer” for what kart to use.
2:20 Some Japanese players are cracked out I've started to notice this more and more when I'm geting close to 10K VR
I’m at 12K VR at the moment and it’s been a journey that’s for sure. Can’t imagine 20K

once at 2k VR a japanese player with 40k joined the room and I was so confused because I couldn't understand why nintendo would put someone who was like 20x the VR of the entire room in a room with us lol
The fact that you are able to outrun blue shield on 200cc is really so funny
Worldwide is absolutely nuts when you hit 20k+ I’m currently at 28k vr or so but every lobby I get put into everyone is above 20k or 30 or higher. I still pull wins often it’s just way more chaotic if you can’t stay in front of the pack.
I loved the vid and i wanna se if you can get a win streak of either 10 or more btw i like the thumbnail it looks rlly good btw on piranha plant PIPEWAY the dirt inside the pipes dont slow u down cool tip
I call it Slide, even though I'm from Europe. It depends which version you've got
