Shortcat has officially turned 1 year old! 🎂🎉 Most of my videos were in 10,000 VR rooms as I improved, so I decided to see how I compare to before. Good luck to everyone out there trying to reach 10K, 20K, or even 99K VR!
Actually watching it back, I think only waluigi stadium was a stupid amount of luck. Every other race was either normal, or the good and bad luck canceled out

Oh people in lower VR attack more? What brings me joy in life is being an agent of chaos in higher level rooms. I don't care if I'm safer in second place. You're getting the red shell. I'm throwing bomb items where they least make sense. I'm backing my shells in packs. Skill and hours played may be your weapon. My weapon is insanity. I break the mind of the competition. The male villager face, that smiling face, will forever be engraved into the minds of my opponents. They know they aren't safe when they see that face smiling at them from behind. Because once he's in the room, the rules are no more. It's free-for-all. I don't care if I win or lose. I don't care if I have losing streaks. All I care about is breaking the meta. Stay safe out there
Its impressive how much of a lead shortcat can get in these lobbies. I never realized how big a difference all the small skills the 20k vr range players have make
Even if a track doesn't have any big shortcuts, every little thing you do that saves 0.3 seconds really counts. If I can do 5 of these per lap, that's a 4.5 second lead by the end of the race!
I found you through TH-cam shorts and I'm not really a mario kart player. However, your video is very entertaining and your comments on this video are super thoughtful & nice. My confidence in playing at 16k vr is slightly boosted after watching this video. I've actually tried staying in 2nd with red shell protection, and it worked out perfectly

I was playing yesterday and twice on Mario Circuit 3 in the exact same spot laps 2 and 3 where I was about to take the last shortcut a boo steals my triple mushrooms and I just get completely screwed over.
I mean, you can see how many shells got sent shortcat's way while he was first in the 10k lobbies. He was also mariokarted on that one race and got 8th. Despite all that he still managed to get first on most of those races. Like he says, bagging can also help you avoid getting mariokarted by avoiding the cluster, as long as you do it well. I would definitely argue it's more of a skill issue than anything. I mean, just look at how huge of a lead he gets by the end of most of the races without even doing anything special.
@@JamesPanoff 1250 hours, but a significant amount of that is just me leaving the console on while I'm editing, or trying to get footage for shorts / tutorials. I've probably played at least 800 hours though!

Aww I wanted to see that Menacing Waluigi Wiggler player from Japan with 6000 VR points to appear in this video again for Episode 3 of him destroying the 1st place players during the 2nd lap. He was totally hilarious and brought alot of viewers and ratings like in the past 2 videos "Shortcat vs Longcat & Shortcat vs ShortRat".
I love it when shortcat finally unleashes all of his power just to get destroyed by a bunch of different animal species of the same, if not greater height
People who complain about how luck-based Mario Kart is forget that mitigating luck is also a skill, knowing when and how to use your items, when to save them, choosing to hold onto your red shells and not throw them at first, bagging at the right distance… yes there is a ton of luck in MK8DX, and knowing how to be good with that luck is inherently a skill.
I used to get terrible road rage with this game, but your videos have really helped me get over that and just laugh it off, even when I get Mario Karted into oblivion. 😂 The games been a lot more fun since I found your channel.
Hi Shortcat! I finally picked up a Switch and MK8D! I played a lot on Wii U 10 years ago. I hopped into Worldwide and all the tracks being served were 100cc! Also there was a 70K VR dude stomping the 1K room! Shameless! I'm switching to Regional anyway, so I can play 150cc, and because I have more experience than a typical 1K player.
Yeah, that’s the online experience, there’s always one person with waaayyy more vr than everyone else that dominates every race and basically ruins it for everyone else
Yeah it really takes a while before you get 150cc, but honestly I don't find 100cc to be THAT different. I had to go through that last year as well. I was the one stomping on all the 1K VR players (but I had no choice!!!)
At the time of writing this comment I almost have 20K vr in Mario Kart, and I wanna say thank you these videos have definitely helped me in both getting better at the game, and entertainment in general. Congrats on one whole year, can't wait for more videos in the future. (This also may not be so important but might as well say my main combo is Peach, Wild Wiggler, Azure Roller, and Paper Glider. May not be the meta but I like the way this looks on Peach. That or City tripper and roller with the same glider. I'm one who likes looks for kart combos more than anything else. 🙂)

Good races! I always appreciate Shortcat's enthusiasm when it comes to Mario Kart. It is very infectious! 😄 I had not thought about it, but, yeah, lower level lobbies do tend to item spam a bit more. Good item management is a vital part to becoming a better Mario Kart player. However, no matter your skill, there will sometimes be races where you have a comfortable lead and things just fall apart at the end from a last-minute Boo steal, Blue Shell, or from a barrage of Red Shells!
I started playing this not too long ago. At about 3000 vr, people will hold their items... a lot. I don't dream of rooms where they just throw so I can pass. I think the skill level is changing thanks to youtubers like you

I love Shortcat's mentality. He never gets salty, instead focusing on how he could've adapted to a bad situation. In a game like Mario Kart with an absolute ton of random elements, that mentality is especially admirable. I've learned so much from these vids about how the RNG in this game can be manipulated in the player's favor. Shortcat really shows how this game rewards the player who put in the time to research and practice.

But this was the first race of the video. 👀 8:55 Said the guy who won literally every race in the video (including the one that did not exist in the first couple minutes) prior to this one. 11:49 The last time I had a Toad "play nice" was in Mario Kart 64. It's almost like Jen Taylor providing his voice in Double Dash was the start of the Toad villain arc. 12:42 That Spiny Shell didn't care about the fact that your race ended. It just wanted to send a message. 12:49 Oh look! It's the better of the 2 atrocious U.S. Tour city courses, and the difference between them isn't even close. 15:24 I have mixed results with my admittedly limited experience bagging. My good results can often be credited to the ⭐, though my single best bagging performance was the result of a big black Bullet extension at Yoshi Circuit, while my bad results are almost always due to getting caught by Lightning while the Golden timer is counting down. As such, I prefer the middle-of-the-pack set of ⭐ and triple 🍄 over any pair where the second item is in pocket while a Gold 🍄 is in the first item slot. 16:18 Let's go! I found your channel a couple weeks ago and have completely devoured your content. Super fun watching you race and take all those shortcuts (I just realized today your name is likely a play on the word Shortcut!)
Another thing that adds to the chaos of lower VR room, ppl who get the shock will see ppl in bullets/stars and just straight up not care and give them a free dodge. Then the front runners who are using all their skill to try and build a lead, get Mario karted. Happens so often to me, and even then I'll blame it on one mistake I made earlier in the race that cost me a second or two and that's literally the difference between 3rd and 7th sometimes

Hey Shortcat, I’d love to see a ‘starting from 0’ series! Start at 1k VR, slowly work your way up one time (or maybe start at 10k for better games). Adds some continuity to the ‘trying my best’ series and will be a nice break from your other challenges!
Video 2 of asking mk8dx related questions until I run out of them (or until I get bored) 1: I noticed that when you get off of a half pipe you get a mushroom boost, but when I see you trick, it seems the same except it has more air time. Tricks are usually supposed to be rewarding, is there anything worth it about going for the trick? 2: whenever you’re in a long-ish cannon glider, you use motion glider for seemingly no reason. Is there any benefit for that? Or is it just for fun?
1. I think tricking on a halfpipe does nothing for your speed. What you want to do instead is air hop to realign your kart. For example, on the Waluigi stadium left halfpipe, when your tires turn sideways you should hold left and press R. This helps you stay more left after landing. I generally air hop on every halfpipe, except the halfpipe before the gap jump on wii rainbow road. For that one I just do nothing. Sometimes tricking can help on a halfpipe, with the reason being to do a sharp trick or counter trick (i explained this in a short about trick directions). I do a left trick on the last halfpipe boost of waluigi stadium (you can see it on lap 2 here) to get a sharper drift. 2. I don't think it saves time, but it helps me move slightly in a direction. I've seen world records do it, so I figure why not!
Yeah that Toad Harber race is why people say it's harder. It's definitely not because you clearly still do really well in most of the races because you're better, but the chaos can definitely be frustrating especially when you might be slightly better but not Shortcat level better than the 10k lobby you're in Still regardless the answer is to get better at the game ie skill issue, but i get why people find it to be the most frustrating point in the MK8D online grind

Dylan, what do you average on 3x3 now? Do you still practice or are you really done with speedcubing? I average 7.5 and can’t find a sub 7 tutorial, will you do that if you ever upload on jperm again?
Should have added a slow mo edit for that Mario Circuit ending like they do on horse races and such haha. But yeah I have started to realize too that luck is not as big part of mariokart as i first thought years ago. Edit: My favorite personal blue shell dodge was when I managed to do the snow land shortcut. I had to twist the drift a little different and do it slightly early but it worked and I was excited about it for the rest of the day lol
Yeah mario kart has very extreme luck sometimes, but usually it does not. Looking at average placement is the best way to go, and then it's clear that skill plays a big part! Also chaining blue shell dodges into a shortcut is so sick, I don't think I've done that for a big shortcut before! Congrats
i love how shortcat is basically roasting my play level this while video. all jokes aside i just got a gamecube controller and an adapter to use the tips you have given about gamecube controllers.
Imo in almost all multiplayer competitive games, there is an element of luck. There will be some games you lose despite playing perfectly, and some games where you win despite playing poorly. The best players are not only the ones who play the best and most consistent, but also the ones who know how to bend luck in their favor, and also have a plan for what to do if it doesn't. Something can go wrong, and a good player will be more likely to overcome it anyway. Even so, the best player in any game does not win 100% of the time, especially in online MP games.
13:25 as a competitive splatoon player skill barriers can be really annoying to break because people fall into this mindset of “I’m doing all I can what do I do now”, higher level players have an easier time identifying and breaking those barriers, that’s how they get as good as they are
i can’t believe it’s already been a year since you started, it’s been amazing to see both you and your channel grow over this past year ! i started playing mk8d recently and discovered your channel which has kindled a love for this game that i didn’t know i had, playing online used to be one of my biggest fears as a beginner but now i’m more confident and have even gotten better at consistently doing shortcuts ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ congrats to one year on youtube and 300k, hopefully there will be more amazing moments in the future. keep up the great work and amazing content shortcat !!!

I've never played MK online before, but I did play a lot of MK Wii with my siblings. The most significant strategy any if us knew was to not throw defense items. None of us knew shortcuts, optimal lines or even drifting. Somehow I think newer players being exposed to things like the "optimal" combos and the use of, and sometimes the over-use of, drifting has made them stop thinking about how to place highly without being told how. This comment is very boomer sounding, but I'm only 18. I just don't know how else to put it into words. I think that it would be better for improvement to be playing with friends though as opposed to playing in random lobbies.
Every time you ever talk about doing well or being skilled you either immediately get destroyed or screw up your lines and it keeps happening until you stop. The universe wants you to remember to be humble.

All the 20K players had to succeed in the 10K rooms to get where they are. Keep trying to improve! 20K has definitely been harder than 10K for me

I have mixed results with my admittedly limited experience bagging. My good results can often be credited to the ⭐, though my single best bagging performance was the result of a big black Bullet extension at Yoshi Circuit, while my bad results are almost always due to getting caught by Lightning while the Golden timer is counting down. As such, I prefer the middle-of-the-pack set of ⭐ and triple 🍄 over any pair where the second item is in pocket while a Gold 🍄 is in the first item slot.

I found your channel a couple weeks ago and have completely devoured your content. Super fun watching you race and take all those shortcuts (I just realized today your name is likely a play on the word Shortcut!)
Another thing that adds to the chaos of lower VR room, ppl who get the shock will see ppl in bullets/stars and just straight up not care and give them a free dodge. Then the front runners who are using all their skill to try and build a lead, get Mario karted. Happens so often to me, and even then I'll blame it on one mistake I made earlier in the race that cost me a second or two and that's literally the difference between 3rd and 7th sometimes

Hey Shortcat, I’d love to see a ‘starting from 0’ series! Start at 1k VR, slowly work your way up one time (or maybe start at 10k for better games). Adds some continuity to the ‘trying my best’ series and will be a nice break from your other challenges!
The domination is crazy, Shortcat scored 2.1 on average throughout the whole video and, not counting the last race, an incredible 1.8!

1: I noticed that when you get off of a half pipe you get a mushroom boost, but when I see you trick, it seems the same except it has more air time. Tricks are usually supposed to be rewarding, is there anything worth it about going for the trick?
2: whenever you’re in a long-ish cannon glider, you use motion glider for seemingly no reason. Is there any benefit for that? Or is it just for fun?
1. I think tricking on a halfpipe does nothing for your speed. What you want to do instead is air hop to realign your kart. For example, on the Waluigi stadium left halfpipe, when your tires turn sideways you should hold left and press R. This helps you stay more left after landing. I generally air hop on every halfpipe, except the halfpipe before the gap jump on wii rainbow road. For that one I just do nothing. Sometimes tricking can help on a halfpipe, with the reason being to do a sharp trick or counter trick (i explained this in a short about trick directions). I do a left trick on the last halfpipe boost of waluigi stadium (you can see it on lap 2 here) to get a sharper drift.
2. I don't think it saves time, but it helps me move slightly in a direction. I've seen world records do it, so I figure why not!

Yeah that Toad Harber race is why people say it's harder. It's definitely not because you clearly still do really well in most of the races because you're better, but the chaos can definitely be frustrating especially when you might be slightly better but not Shortcat level better than the 10k lobby you're in
Still regardless the answer is to get better at the game ie skill issue, but i get why people find it to be the most frustrating point in the MK8D online grind

Applying what was in your Pro guide to lower-VR regional rooms, it certainly is VERY easy to get podium positions because of how chaotic the pack is.

Edit: My favorite personal blue shell dodge was when I managed to do the snow land shortcut. I had to twist the drift a little different and do it slightly early but it worked and I was excited about it for the rest of the day lol
Yeah mario kart has very extreme luck sometimes, but usually it does not. Looking at average placement is the best way to go, and then it's clear that skill plays a big part! Also chaining blue shell dodges into a shortcut is so sick, I don't think I've done that for a big shortcut before! Congrats

Imo in almost all multiplayer competitive games, there is an element of luck. There will be some games you lose despite playing perfectly, and some games where you win despite playing poorly. The best players are not only the ones who play the best and most consistent, but also the ones who know how to bend luck in their favor, and also have a plan for what to do if it doesn't. Something can go wrong, and a good player will be more likely to overcome it anyway. Even so, the best player in any game does not win 100% of the time, especially in online MP games.

13:25 as a competitive splatoon player skill barriers can be really annoying to break because people fall into this mindset of “I’m doing all I can what do I do now”, higher level players have an easier time identifying and breaking those barriers, that’s how they get as good as they are

I've never played MK online before, but I did play a lot of MK Wii with my siblings. The most significant strategy any if us knew was to not throw defense items. None of us knew shortcuts, optimal lines or even drifting. Somehow I think newer players being exposed to things like the "optimal" combos and the use of, and sometimes the over-use of, drifting has made them stop thinking about how to place highly without being told how.
This comment is very boomer sounding, but I'm only 18. I just don't know how else to put it into words. I think that it would be better for improvement to be playing with friends though as opposed to playing in random lobbies.
