At the time, morrowinds graphics were just next level. I remember my older brother playing the game and I literally thought it was a movie when I didnt know any better. I got oblivion when I was around 10 or so and was just flabbergasted at that as well. People dont remember how fast graphics were advancing during the 5th, 6th, and 7th generation eras
I wasn’t around during those times, but i’ve played a few games in all generations and i can definitely see the jump. From Morrowind, to Oblivion, to Skyrim. That pretty much sums up how graphics in games evolved. Now i’d say mid to late 2010’s, most games feel like noticeable, but slight improvements. Whatever, graphics shouldn’t matter as much as it does to some, but it is crazy how there was a time where games were going from homemade 3d animation graphics, to photorealistic in an average time gap of 5 or 4 years.
@@tarheelpro87 looking up in the night sky or waiting indoors a shack in a small fishing village during a thunderstorm were some of the most immersive gaming experiences I had during the early 2000s. The graphics in this game truly blew me away not just because of how good they were at the time but just how well they mixed with the weird world of Vvardenfell.
Morrowind was pretty far behind in terms of graphics to be honest. Kind of had to be due to the size of the game in order to have such a big world. What it did succeed immensely with though was making that world great and immersive, even if it wasnt all that huge it was filled to the brim with points of interests and captivating scenery. In terms of graphics games like Unreal Tournament 2003, Battlefield 1942, Metroid Prime, and especially Resident Evil Remake (though it was pre-rendered backgrounds) were top of the line. Shoutout to No One Lives Forever 2 for having HD textures several years before that became the norm. Though I have to say Morrowind's skyboxrd are some of the most beautiful ones around, it still beats most of the skyboxes from newly released games.
I was 18 when this game came out. Likely sunk 700+ hours into it. Even when i wasnt playing it, I was thinking about it. I beat it a number of times and I highly suggest completing this one. The story is incredible start to finish.
I was 16 when skyrim came out. I started playing ES in 07 with oblivion. I can't imagine what playing morrowind for the first time must have been for you.
@@abelramirez7320 It was mindblowimg. There was nothing like it before. I watched a buddy make a character and start playing. I went the next day and bought an xbox and Morrowind on my 7 dollar an hour Burger King salary. Gladly blew a whole paycheck.
I was had to go and look how old I was when Morrowind was released here and I was 5 months and 1 week old. I'm currently 20 years old and have sunk somewhere close to 1000 hours into Skyrim, ever since I got it for my XBOX 360 in 2014. Roughly About 400 of those are on PC, combined standard and special edition. Skyrim was also my introduction to the Elder Scrolls series and it's still one of my favorite games ever. Also got ESO a couple of weeks ago and have about 50 hours in it.
I started with Skyrim and eventually, I decided to try Morrowind. I never expected to get hooked by a game from 2003 but it happened... The amount of liberty to actually do whatever you want is astounding! I was so immersed in it that I would think of it at work and what mysteries lied ahead and what would I do next! And I couldn't stop until I beat the game and it's DLC's. It kinda set the bar for me and it turned out to be my favourite Elder Scrolls game and one of my all time favourites. It's a must for RPG fans and the Morrowind community it's one of the best out there! Give it a try 😁 Three blessings upon you, sera 🙏
Yep I feel the same , when I played Skyrim I felt it was really sub par in every important way. Only most recent rpg I can think of that I think is really good is the witcher 3 and divinity
@@ScrubbyBubbles fun? Just makes me disappointed that they decided to go down hill, the potential they could of done of they expanded on their origins instead of dumbing it down to cater to the casual simple players.
Morrowind is my favorite game ever. I was 13 when it came out, my first real gaming experience. Helped me to learn English, true story. If I close my eyes I see the road in front of me how to go from Syda Neen to Balmora, how to find Caldera. Really doesn’t need questmarkers, a little polished journal system in an open world RPG even today would give us a more immersive gameplay. I’m nostalgic… hmmm
This and New Vegas have that similar feel of just open possibility, no great hero story, no forced path, just the open road and your own choices. I love it.
Morrowind was the game that really made me fall in love with video games. It was a complete and total paradigm shift for me as a kid -- I had no idea games could do the things Morrowind was doing. I was probably around 13 or so, and my older brother was home for the summer from college. He brought a stack of XBOX games with him, and inside that stack was Morrowind GotY Edition. It completely blew my mind, and I spent so much of my free time that summer in the basement exploring Vvardenfell. It's been in my top 1-2 favorite games of all time since then, and the soundtrack is still my favorite. To this day, hearing Nerevar Rising fills me with nostalgia and brings me right back to that summer in my basement. It was magic.
I know for a fact that plenty of TES fans who began in Oblivion and Skyrim have a hard time with Morrowind’s dated systems. A lot of these people give up early on and don’t give the game much of a chance. Which, to be clear, isn’t the fault of the players, just the learning curve can make the experience frustrating. I have a few tips for people who are used to Oblivion and especially Skyrim so that they may give Morrowind another chance. I absolutely adore Morrowind and it deserves to be played in 2022. I believe at its core, it’s the best RPG work Bethesda has ever done and I would love more people to experience it. 1. Your fatigue (stamina) matters… a LOT. You can’t just left click spam like Oblivion or Skyrim because your chance to hit and damage output is dictated by how much stamina is remaining. Which means you need to stop sprinting and allow yourself time to recover between attacks. It is a lot more methodical than you would expect and requires patience. A lot of people I see who try get into Morrowind have issues with the combat. Watching your stamina will help you a ton, because I know that in Oblivion and certainly Skyrim, stamina hardly does anything and you can left click spam to victory. You will deal more damage and hit your target more often by properly managing your fatigue. 2. Your character build and skill choices are far more impactful, so you need to pay close attention to your loadout, especially early on. In Skyrim for example, you are given a basic iron sword far earlier in the intro than you are able to get a bow, but you can still get through the intro segment using melee without issue. Even if you are building a Wood Elf archer. In Morrowind, if you don’t choose shortblades as a major skill, the iron dagger you start with will be hell on Earth for you. You will be missing tons of attacks and dealing no damage. You combine this problem with not properly managing your stamina and this is the main reason new players find the combat so infuriating. Absolutely use early game shops and loot a lot to match your equipment to your characters skills. You can’t use anything you find laying around effectively in the same way you can in the later titles. You will have a very hard time playing outside your class, so be on the lookout for relevant weapons and armour. 3. Read as much as you can, especially from quest givers. A lot of hidden details and directions are in deeper dialogue, and you very much want that information to make your quest easier to locate and complete. A lot of new players are used to following the map marker everywhere, and Morrowind requires a lot of detective work. I absolutely loved this system once I got used to it. It’s very rewarding finding and completing things entirely on your own. I suggest just paying very close attention to directions and being patient. It takes some time, but you get used to where to look, who to talk to, and what to ask. I hope I can help inspire even one person to give this game another shot. Like I said, I know a lot of people who quickly become frustrated with how different the combat and systems are from the newer games, then give up. These few things help so much, especially if the clunky combat feels like you are hitting a brick wall. There are a lot more things to pay attention to in this game while in combat, so it’s easy to mismanage things and get destroyed by basic enemies. If you take into account these things, I am certain you will find the game far less of a slog to progress through. Then hopefully you can enjoy the full game as much as I do.
@Izgheo no they would just make it shallow like skyrim the combat was great in morrowind. Modern rpgs are hot garbage. They hold your hand. They let you do everything in the first playthrough. They show you exactly where to go at all times. Morrowind doesn't need any of that it would be an insult to modernize it.
I'm one of those newer players, but I found Morrowind really easy to get into. Just felt like oblivion but the combat is more annoying. The only reason I stopped playing was because I had to deliver this... slave? I think, but he was super slow so I just went where I had to go and assumed he would have spawned when I entered the building. He didn't. I went back and he was nowhere to be found. I plan to get back into it soon, I'll probably just have to spawn him with the console commands and hope that works. Otherwise though, it really didn't seem much different form Skyrim and Oblivion to me just with a few extra steps.
I really do wish they’d work on remastering this game, just make the text more readable, and a less blurry game, it genuinely hurts my eyes on current screens :(
I first heard about “Morrowind” on Toonami way back in the day when they occasionally did game reviews during commercial breaks. They described it as a RPG with a “game world so large that it would literally take days to walk across it.” I was hooked as soon as I got it and to this day it’s still my favorite and most played Elder Scrolls game.
Funny thing is they weren't wrong if you're on foot but it shows how little they played the games. Cause if you get acrobatics spells or levitate all of a sudden the world seems a bit smaller. I'm currently replaying it and with a fortify speed spell and a amulet with infinite 8pt levitate I can go from caldera to balmora in 15 seconds.
Caldera to Balmora is a short walk anyway. Especially once you build up your walk speed a bit. Edit, sorry for the double especially. I must have been tired when I wrote this.
@@fromryuk7785 But they'e talking without those things. Just plain, from the start, the world is huge. To move through MW's world so fast is to miss evrything in between.
I come back to morrowind at least once a year. The mechanics, the ambience of the weird world, the soundtrack, the never ending discovery and interesting lore are all magical. Bethesda’s best game and my favorite game of all time.
My tip to every single new player is to get the spells Mark and Recall. Always, always set your Mark at the Caldera Mages Guild, right next to the teleporter NPC. Easy access to most main cities, and when your inventory is full of precious loot... Just Recall and goto The Creeper! A merchant that has 5000 gold and replenishes daily. Morrowind is probably one of my top three games of all time. I have put so many hours into that game I often recite the entire beginning dialogue. "Stand up... There you go..."
I set it to the Mudcrab Merchant. 10,000 gold. Buys everything at full price. And as long as you have almsivi intervention and divine intervention spells, you can go to either Sadrith Mora or Molag Mar from there. Both have stilt strider/boat travel and Sadrith Mora has the mages guild for transport too.
Very fond memories of Morrowind, that feeling when you get off the boat at Seyda Neen, was probably the first time I have played a real detailed open world game. The sense of adventure and exploration was amazing, and the game does not hold your hand. Amazing game and also the soundtrack is timeless!!
My favorite, the wife's second favorite. I truly wish this, Oblivion and Fallout 3 and New Vegas would all get re-released after getting a modern touch up. Was fun to see this game again thru your eyes @Matty
I started a new playthrough of Morrowind (on the xbox this time) like 5 mins before this video came out, great timing lol. And yes I am already a super fast lizard man who can jump over mountains and has a sword that causes a nuclear explosion everytime its used...God I love this game.
Morrowind is the first open world game I played and beat and it is my favorite! I have such great memories playing that game back in 2005!!! Better times for sure. 😁
I loved Morrowind, playing it as a kid, the world was scary and I didn't quite understand what to do, so I just broke into houses in Seyda Neen, sold things, then fast traveled around the world to explore other towns. It's the freedom that is still in my memory, I have to replay it someday. Thanks for your video :) Why I love fantasy games and books is always the adventure, and that's what TES always delivers. Adventure that feels your own.
I wish Bethesda would go back to that guild leveling system. It was by far the best system they've ever created. Imagine actually being required to use the skills to be a magic user or using melee skills to be in the fighter's guild. You might have to learn how to build character properly.
It's crazy how the map and the "detailed" manual and other slips that came with games back then, today it would be collection edition only stuff. I remember buying this game and tearing the map open on the ride home from Gamestop and being in awe how huge the game was.
Back when Blockbuster video was still around. Yes I'm old I remember hearing about this RPG where you could travel on a giant flea. Fast Forward to 2022 and I'm still hoping for a real remake for this underrated gem. Yes it's aged but it's still a great game. Thanks for covering this Matty. Hope your game is going well. Trails series = great too!
When I first played Morrowind, I was overwhelmed. I didn't know what to do back then. I stopped playing. I tried my hand at Oblivion, that was rather easy to get into, but the missions were repetitive and got boring after a while. After completing Oblivion, I tried Morrowind again. This time, I had a clue what to do, thanks to the internet. It still felt overwhelming, but at least I was having fun. I never completed it though. I am going to start replaying Morrowind soon.
Definitely finish Morrowind! And read all the in game history books. And do House Telvanni's quests and a vampire guild...never seen so much to do in a game before or after. The ending is truly epic, esp. if you haven't spoiled it. I was always astounded at how massive the world was, and how I could use the included map like a Michelin guide. My first time off the boat hiked all the way to Balmora, then continued up the coast to Gnisis. I was amazed that I had only seen the edge of the west coast of the island after several hours of walking (and stopping to explore ruins and stuff on the way).
Thanks for this video Matty! I have been sitting in Morrowind for so long and this video motivated me to finally play It. Spend the whole day playing it and through trial and error I have gotten a better understanding of how to play it. As someone who loves Skyrin and Oblivion, it's great to experience something old but new to me!
Morrowind is easily the best Elder Scrolls game that I've played. I first played Morrowind last year and I've done two full playthroughs. It really isn't as hardcore as you're saying. If you just read your journal and pay attention to the mechanics, you'll do fine.
Bethesda's crowning achievement to this day. Imagine a remake of morrowind in unreal engine 5 to tide us over? Maintain the depth but tune/modernize the systems? I'd drop $100 on that immediately.
Morrowind is the game that really ignited my love for gaming. I remember pouring hundreds of hours in it trying out different builds and loving every single minute of it.
*Great recommendation* of the game. *Morrowind* is probably my favorite game, RPG at least. There's so much to explore and experience that even after 10-15.000 hours of gameplay (yes) *I also never finished* the main quest line, like you. I probably never will. The *manual* was set up in a logical way, one of the best of thin manuals, I think. I like that you called it "thick." Personally I love *thick* manuals, I sometimes bought strategic games for their 2-300 pages manuals without ever installing the games.
My tip for Morrowind: Create a Slowfall constant effect amulet with 5 points. Create a spell that boosts jump and acrobatics by 100 for 1 second. Cast spell. Jump 1000m in desired direction. Zero damage landing.
Matty I'm playing KOTOR for the first time, I just finished up on Manaan and Kashyyyk and I think this is my new favourite RPG of all time!! I'm now hyping up all my friends for the remake! Thank you for all this 🤙🏻
I’ve never played this game. Oblivion was my first elder scrolls game, I’ve picked it up on gamepass and I think I may play it and record my experience for TH-cam
just started playing this game on my original xbox and i love it so much, Oblivion used to be my favorite Elder scrolls, i know see the ignorance of my past self haha
I got Morrowind WAY BACK on my Original Xbox and I kid you not, I was so confused at 12 years old, I had no idea what I was doing for 3 solid weeks, but I kept playing cuz I was intruiged (This was my first Elder Scrolls game) After that 3 weeks, something clicked and I was finally able to play it AND love it
I’d be walking back and for the between my room and my parents office to check on gamefaqs back when I was twelve to know what to do. Good ol days of gaming.
LOVING this series! This channel has been doing wonders just letting us go down memory lane OR learn about games we missed out on. Leaving this comment first for the algorithm and shall watch now 😍💜
My first BGS game. Absolutely loved this on my Xbox back in the day and when I heard a few years later that these guys would be the ones making the next Fallout game (my favorite series of all time) you can imagine my excitement of being able to explore that universe from a first or third person perspective. Without Morrowind, we may never have gotten Fallout 3, New Vegas or Fallout 4, and that's a reality that I really don't want to think about not being a part of because of how much all those games mean to me. So thank you Bethesda Game Studios, and thank you Morrowind.
I've finished Morrowind more times then Skyrim and Oblivion combined, thing about the missing attacks its so easy to get around it early on, just pick a weapon style you like and make that your primary skill, pick the weapons attribute and agility, but its really not that needed. Tip best weapons in my opinion are long swords/blades, and as soon as you can just get a levitation spell from an item or potion, some 500 arrows and a bow, hop over to Suran, get over the eastern hills, drink the levitation potion, talk to Umbra, fly where he can't reach you and slowly kills him with the bow, collect the sword and WIN! Congrats you have the best weapon in game.
@@damascus6480 There's another comment on the list that describes perfectly that you need fatigue(stamina) to be at the full to land your hits, if your fatigue is drained it drops your hit chance by as much as 50+% ,But lets say once your chosen weapon skill is 60+ you'll likely never miss again, and with 70+ skill even with 0 fatigue you won't miss.
As someone who brought Morrowind during the launch week. I will say that I have never betten Morrowind either. I then traded that copy into my local EB games to get the GoTY edition. Started a whole new playthough and never bet it then either. Fast forward to the Xbox and Bethesda deal and they put Morrowind into gamepass. I started yet another go around and never finished that playthough either. I guess I just enjoy playing the game and being in that world. Just making my own story and journey.
My only complaint was directions to objectives. I had a harder time than I'd care to admit finding a place. I'm sure that's just me but I really did struggle with that 😅
I got Morrowind for Christmas 1 year in middle school. I remember being super disappointed opening it bc it was not whatever game I had asked for. I begrudgingly gave it a try while on break from school and completely fell in love. I had never played anything like it before. Nowadays I revisit it every so often on PC, but I sometimes I feel like I spend more time modding it than playing it.
Best thing about M is that it's not a cookie cutter world space (looking a Skyrim). Worst thing is all that hyperlinked text, so glad that vanished in Oblivion (and no amount of mods can fix it).
If anyones looking for some quality vids on Morrowind in particular, i highly recommend watching Camelworks. He goes through all kinds of easter eggs and deep dives into the characters and lore of elder scrolls in general but Morrowind itself is jam packed with all kinds of stuff for any curious cretin of cyrodiil 🙃
I really wish I played Morrowind when I was younger because I struggle to beat it now because of its age. I’ve been spoiled with oblivion and Skyrim. I’ve just never been into the skill check combat, and no voice acting really throws me off. The game intrigues me for sure, and hopefully I’ll actually complete it one day.
I tried to play Morrowind recently, for the anniversary, on Xbox One. But I just couldn’t. I don’t know exactly what was wrong, but some combination of the HD textures, the resolution, or the framerate. But I got 90 minutes in, and I had a headache from eye strain. Such a shame, I was looking forward to it.
One of my all time favorite games. I remember being 8 or 9 years old and sucked at the game, but always watched my older brother play it. We both never beat it, and i've tried many times. But funny enough i have about 80 hours into it and am currently playing it as we speak. Fingers crossed!
Easily the best of BGS titles imo. Not too hard-core, it just doesn't hold your hand and has the confidence that the player can figure things out for themselves. Also, the Stat checks in combat that *some* complain about or modify their game to increase their hit chance? Well, focus your first 5 or so levels really hard on your preferred way to make things dead and you will forget that it was an issue. Just play smart until you do level up a bit(you know, like you would if this were real life). I personally love this game BECAUSE it is so immersive. You are told that you have to go to a dwarven tower to get a puzzle box and are told directions using landmarks so you actually have to pay attention to your surroundings as you travel there. You don't need a map marker, just use your eyes and your brain. I remember having my own adventure when first playing this game, following a trail of literal messages in bottles and a tale of treachery that spanned several different locations. It ultimately lead to a particular item that is common in TES games but I honestly couldn't care about that item. What I remember is me scouring my notes and maps, trying to decifer exactly where the clue was telling me that I needed to go next. Imagine that, a game that actually treats the player like they are capable of figuring things out on their own. Wild, right?
One of my favorite and the most nostalgia filled game in my life by a long shot, maybe top 3 right by halo CE and "old school" RuneScape. By the way that disc town looks like Caldera to me
Morrowind is a great game. Definitely a learning curve for sure but once it hooks you, you can’t get enough of it. The main campaign is definitely worth playing through, Dagoth Ur is such a cool villain and his voice actor does a really good job. Traveling around the island of Vvardenfell and doing missions for whatever faction you choose to align yourself to is, in my opinion, the best part of the game. It adds so much replay-ability because there are a ton of factions to choose from and you can’t do them all in a single playthrough because their quests will often conflict with one another such as the thieves guild and and fighters guild. And of course just going off and exploring and making your own adventure is really amazing in this game too. The emphasis on your journal and detailed directions makes this also in a lot of ways the most immersive Bethesda game.
I loved this game so much as a kid. I never beat it and have no clue what the main story was. It really was just about the journey and having fun. I do miss the thieves guild from this game
Definitely going to get into it. Since they all came to game pass Morrowind, Oblivion, and Vegas have been on my hit list. Problem is so is KOTOR 2 and rn Digimon Survive and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. That said, after TESVI Bethesda needs to get on doing straight remakes of all the old elder Scrolls games (whether than re-release the same one 20 times). I'd love Morrowind and Oblivion in creation engine 2.0 (and whatever tech they have when TESVI drops in 2099).
I was 13 when it was released but I truly believe this game made me well versed in the English language. I could read much better than my peers and I knew how to spell much better and knew harder words than them
I've beaten it at least a half a dozen times, but I do tend to play it about once a year. Still my favorite game for story and interaction with npc's but oblivion is a very close second. Really like fallout but the elder scrolls is still head and shoulders above it for me.
I have zero nostalgia for Morrowind. Played it for the 1st time in 2012 and it is, by far, the best open world game I've played. Only other real contender is New Vegas. The lack of quest markers and limited fast travel is so critical. I think it's the best TES game by far and would easily put it above Ubisoftified open world games like Witcher 3 and BotW
God, just seeing that box is nostalgic as hell. Playing that game back in the day made me look at video games different. I loved the settlement on the bloodmoon island and watching it grow. I still have that strategy guide on my bookshelf.
I was 12 or so when Morrowind came out. Saw it at the store for xbox on sale and had my parents get it for me. I got home and played it and hated it but since I couldn't buy my own games I kept playing it. I hated it for hours but eventually something clicked. I started exploring, upgrading my character, doing quests and I was loving it. My friend got it shortly after and we talked about what we found in our adventures. It quickly became one of my favorite games of all time and made me a TES fan. Eventually I traded that copy to gamestop so I could get an Xbox copy of the GOTY edition so I could play Tribunal and Bloodmoon. Still have that copy of the game.
I was actually really looking forward to playing Morrowind, but unfortunately it is 2023. I guess I'll wait and see if it is still recommended this year - I look forward to the update!
This is the one I could never get into, and not because I consider it to be a bad game or anything, but because I couldn't play it back in the day and now it's too old to be enjoyed in my particular case. And sorry to say it, but Morrowind didn't age very well personally. The story is great, but everything else kinda falls apart. Is not that the game was before my time so to speak either, I'm older than you, but back then I didn't have the chance to play many games nor did I have a console or a decent computer, so I missed out unfortunately. And as I've said in another video, I tried to play it a few years back with a very popular mod pack that literally overhauls all the textures, but still that gameplay... I just couldn't get behind it, plus the level design inside some dungeons, it all adds up in the end. There's still hope for me, thanks to the modding community if Skywind releases I'll have a feast playing it. I think it's still a few years away though.
I’ve tried morrowind multiple times at different ages and I’m in a similar boat. I just can’t mesh with the combat. I love the overall uniqueness and freedom, but I’m really looking forward to Skywind so I can finally see it all
Never beat morrowind. That was the last of the elder scrolls I had played and it definitely is a different gameplay experience. I still thoroughly enjoyed what I did play and I do think the world is one of the best in gaming. There is so much jam packed into this and so many events happening by just walking around it was a great time. Also the music is some of the best adventuring music out there.
I loved the variety in the world in Morrowind. Oblivion and Skyrim are great, but the open worlds in those games are too samey. I didn't think Morrowind was too difficult. The hostility of the world was enjoyable to adventure though and overcome.
Morrowind is amazing! And that soundtrack! Damn! To this day the only game that warned me I'd killed someone important and the game was pointless to continue so I'd better reload my last save.
I never finished Morrowind myself since I never really got into TES until oblivion I was always the final fantasy person the 2d pixel ones all the up to the modern ones. But going to Morrowind after coming from oblivion the game is very hard to get into, but I suppose the same can be said for arena, Daggerfall, Redguard, and Battlspire coming from oblivion being me first TES game.
I completely understand that. I think morrowind is mostly popular among people who played it as their first TES game. I for example have a very special place in my heart for it because it was the first one I ever played. Oblivion was an absolute blast to play and I would probably feel exactly the same if it was my first one. Morrowind is hard to get into, even for people who’ve played it before, it’s sometimes tedious and frustrating. But is well worth it once you finally get into the flow and the game begins to open up.
@@travman1987 oh yeah I know it is and I do have it . I have all of the TES games on PC Arena, Daggerfall, Redguard, and Battlspire I have through GOG as well as Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim on both Steam and Xbox.
Yeah, Fallout 2 into Gothic 2 into Morrowind made me a fan of RPGs. Btw, if you haven't played it already, play Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos mod that got released half a year ago, it's basically like playing Gothic 2 for the first time, it's that good and content wise is enormous. Voice acting is in Polish with Eng subs, but it's professionally done.
Morrowind is absolutely fantastic! First played it a couple of years ago and imo it's the best of the series in terms of player agency. Sorely needs graphics mods though, but that's easy enough to do
Played this after Skyrim, hated it at first, then it became my favorite game ever. It's the most authentic culture I've ever seen in a 3D RPG to this date, it's crazy how well realized Vvardenfell is as a location
Morrowind was my first elder scrolls game and I still have fond memories of it. Playing it today, it has aged.....a lot, I wish Bethesda would team up with another studio to do a remake.
I was just watching Gameranx and the beginning of their video today was talking about Morrowind and I got a notification for your video at the same time! 🤯
Open morrowind is much better in every way guys- The multiplayer mod and the Nerevarine Prophecies server is the best of all. Try it and you will love it.
Play this game on PC. Use Open Morrowind to fix the ancient engine and prevent majority of crashes and bugs. Use a mod organizer and get some graphical and quality of life mods. Also, get the boots of blinding speed by doing Pemenie’s quest or killing her. You will move so much faster with those things on.
Played it on PC when it came out. Ended up installing a Jedi mod with lightsaber and force powers. Was the only way I could play it after that then! Was also super easy to create your own mods with the editor. Amazing game.
Morrowind is the most influential video game of my life lol. Kind of like Matty with KOTOR/Fallout 3. I rented it from a video store when I was about 15, in 2003. I was really into fantasy at the time (particularly Lord of the Rings type stuff, which was at the height of popularity) and I instantly connected with the box art. I went in completely blind and with no expectations, and I remember the first play session lasted like 14 hours straight. I beat it eventually and basically played it off and on until Oblivion came out. But that feeling that I got from first playing Morrowind is the feeling that I've been chasing ever since, and every time I play a new game. It's the experience I can only find with BGS games, which is actually kind of a bummer sometimes. The closest that I've found (aside from other BGS games) came from Elden Ring.
I am actually new to the series in 2022, and i am starting with Morrowind, as it probably would have been the first one i'd have played had i played the games growing up
An amazing and timeless game. First played around 12 years old and was the first game ever that i sunk hundreds of hours into. The whole concept was so foreign to me at the time. I still enjoy it as much today as ever. Just put it on my phone for another playthrough!
I LOVED Morrowind when I was in high school. One of my greatest gaming accomplishments is beating that. Only one of my friends that did.
Same! This game absolutely awed me and my buddies in high-school.
You can play on Linux I do
This game and fable 1 was my go 2s as a middle/high schooler lol
I graduated just before fallout 3 released.

And now theyre stagnating
Yes
Edit: Also I'm pretty sure that's Pelagiad on the disc. They used that city alot for promotional pics

Why You NEED To Play Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind In 2022 after setting all your skills to one.
Dang you beat me to it.
@@tntfreddan3138 ah skyrim, the baby vicking fantasy action non rpg game
Except the part where you have to track down the councilors. Hlaalu is a pain in my dick. But yeah its awesome.
Give it a try 😁
Three blessings upon you, sera 🙏
Yep I feel the same , when I played Skyrim I felt it was really sub par in every important way. Only most recent rpg I can think of that I think is really good is the witcher 3 and divinity
I do keep hearing the role playing and sandbox freedom just went downhill from Morrowind (as well as writing in general).
@@vullord666 oh it’s not even in the same ballpark. Morrowind is freedom and writing at its peak in games, you just have to be willing to read lol
I feel this is very common with BGS games, playing the later entries and going back to where it all began is part of the fun!!
I still feel like this is the best of the series. At least once a year I go back to this. I can’t think of any other game that I do that for.
This and New Vegas have that similar feel of just open possibility, no great hero story, no forced path, just the open road and your own choices. I love it.
DAGGERFALL!!!
Update to be modern and Ill try it, but as long as it booboo graphics ill pass
If every NPC didnt have War and Peace levels of dialogue to read itd be a lot easier to get into
Omg the casuals. If people can't get onto morrowind it's their own loss. Let them play shallow crap like cod Bethesda fallout and skyrim.
@Izgheo The problem isn't with the game, it's that you refuse to learn how to play it.
I really do wish they’d work on remastering this game, just make the text more readable, and a less blurry game, it genuinely hurts my eyes on current screens :(
Play with the openmw engine
If only toonami could review starfield
@@fromryuk7785 But they'e talking without those things. Just plain, from the start, the world is huge. To move through MW's world so fast is to miss evrything in between.
I come back to morrowind at least once a year. The mechanics, the ambience of the weird world, the soundtrack, the never ending discovery and interesting lore are all magical. Bethesda’s best game and my favorite game of all time.
Same bro, when Morrowind gets its grips on you, it's like crack. Very zen experience, just walking around Vvardenfell and soaking in the scenery
I'm going to do this. Thank you
I set it to the Mudcrab Merchant.
Glad to see Morrowind getting love these days. One of my all time faves, would play it all night at my cousins house.
Morrowind is underated??! I"d say underplayed by the community.
Remember Hollywood video with the GameStop attached to it
@@lonemaus562 yep had a friend who worked there
I still have that map! Love Morrowind. I've actually been modding it for another playthrough. Still fun after all these years.
I wouldn't feel like MW if it was in UE5. It would need to be in CE2
@@DarthShadow25 as long as it was great I wouldn't mind

O hell no morrowinds systems are fine as is don't modernize anything
@@elvangulley3210 So long as they don't dumb it down for a mainstream audience it'll be fine.
Still the best in the series.
The only ES I can play without feeling like I NEED mods.
Thank you for all this 🤙🏻
Best game ever made.
Play it on PC. The modding community for this game is just amazing. And you can crank up those details.
I’ve never played this game. Oblivion was my first elder scrolls game, I’ve picked it up on gamepass and I think I may play it and record my experience for TH-cam
Definitely recommend that main story. A lot of the game's great worldbuilding sheds reflects off of it from different angles. I love that in a game.
just started playing this game on my original xbox and i love it so much, Oblivion used to be my favorite Elder scrolls, i know see the ignorance of my past self haha
I love Morrowind and played the hell out of it when it released (still have my old copy floating around somewhere).
I got Morrowind WAY BACK on my Original Xbox and I kid you not, I was so confused at 12 years old, I had no idea what I was doing for 3 solid weeks, but I kept playing cuz I was intruiged (This was my first Elder Scrolls game)
After that 3 weeks, something clicked and I was finally able to play it AND love it
I’d be walking back and for the between my room and my parents office to check on gamefaqs back when I was twelve to know what to do.
I remember playing it as a kid and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t landing a single blow with any weapon or any enemy lol.
The town in the disc is Pelaglad the one with Imperial fort north east of Balmora
Morrowind showed the future of video games at such an early stage. The music gives me chills, always did
I really wish I played Morrowind when I was younger because I struggle to beat it now because of its age.
Dagoth Ur is the best antagonist in the series
Thank you so much for this series brother! Love everything you do. Much love 👊
OMG!!! I’m already in the middle of playing Morrowind fully for the first time with the OpenMW mod installed! Then this popped up! 🗡😃🌋
Thanks for doing this, Matty. I appreciate the content.
I love the overall uniqueness and freedom, but I’m really looking forward to Skywind so I can finally see it all
So what you are saying is you like crap and your taste sucks gotcha. There's nothing outdated about morrowind. It's just a real rpg one of the last
I wonder if MrMattyPlays stuck to his word and beat Morrowind before Starfield is released? Still have time but it's running out
Never beat morrowind.
Sounds pretty much like Gothic 1-2 what you say about morrowing. I should give it a shot.
Something to note. I bought the base game and play it via xbox back compat. I was automatically given the game of the year edition
Morrowind AND Gothic 2 are my favorite games of all time. I can't pick between the two.
I'd guess Pelagiad for the CD art. The Nerevarine storyline is amongst my favorite in any TES game. Can't recommend it enough.
I was just watching Gameranx and the beginning of their video today was talking about Morrowind and I got a notification for your video at the same time! 🤯
I'm 100% doing a replay of this one as soon as my steam deck comes in
Open morrowind is much better in every way guys- The multiplayer mod and the Nerevarine Prophecies server is the best of all. Try it and you will love it.
Most iconic game soundtrack/music of all time for me. Intro/menu track is like a timemachine to my youth, playing this (or trying to) as a 11-12yo.
That’s Pelegiad on the CD. You’ll come across it on your way from Seyda Neen to Balmora.
6:13 give daggerfall unity a try ;) I’d actually be really curious to hear Matty’s thoughts on that one
This game and comic books are why I learned to read
We really were in the best Era of gaming as teens. Such immersive games partnered with amazing breakthroughs in graphics, systems.
Pretty sure the town pictured on the disc is Caldera.
Daggerfall is more fun than Morrowind, especially DaggerFall Unity, but it's much harder to finish thanks to bugs.
Played it on PC when it came out. Ended up installing a Jedi mod with lightsaber and force powers. Was the only way I could play it after that then! Was also super easy to create your own mods with the editor. Amazing game.
Check out the Open Morrowind mod Starwind makes the game into a KOTOR sorta experience
I have my copy I bought from GameStop back today. It still has everything in the box for the game of the year.
5:32 Yeah, I remember myself commenting that on your video. How time flies.
I started with oblivion and Skyrim but I’ve always wanted to play Morrowind and now that I have a series s im definitely gonna download
You just reminded me of the old days when I'd buy a new game and spend time studying the thick manual for days before even installing the game.
completing the main quest is extremely rewarding. stack agility like a normal person, don't mod away the skill checks.
