The part in the movie where "I Can't Stop Loving You" plays alone is reason enough to watch this movie, it's so beautiful and sad and chaotic and cathartic, all at the same time. And the duality between the loving and wholesome nature of the song versus the complete and utter destruction of the city being destroyed and imploding in on itself makes it such an odd choice of song to play given the situation, but god I can't think of a better fit for it even if I tried.

Rock was my favorite part of this movie ! The thing is..Rock is a recurrent character in a LOT of Tezuka's mangas and I know him from there so...maybe I just filled in the blanks on my own. The thing with Rock is he's almost always an adoptive son (usually to a mean rich guy). This character has been in this position for DECADES !
Even in this new movie he's still stuck as a "fake" son. He can try his hardest to please his dad but..that man is never gonna see him as a son...So in a way..he is this guy's robot. And maybe thats why he hates them so much.

Man isn't it a little wild that a man on an island before the time of the internet was already thinking about technology bringing human greed to an evolved form? Cyborg009, Astro Boy, and Kikaider are all stories about androids, and there are similar themes of human manipulation between these characters but they're all so different in nuance. This video was cathartic for me too, I think I finally figured out what has just been pissing me off... It is tiresome. There are better ways of expressing these issues, but as the video author states this was a video to get those raw emotions out there. To me this video falls below the quality this channel is known for, as it only attacks the current system. Blames the reds, corpo scum and then calls it a day. Not much of the why things are the way the are, and why people vote red. I've never seen Metropolis, but maybe now I will give it a watch after this video.
Disclaimer, because I know people are going to dog on me over my comment. I would prefer a more socialized system, favoring the working class which will lift all people up to better tomorrows. I care more about the climate change more than anything. The capitalist system is definitely one of the root causes of climate change, but not the only symptom.

I love the way you analyzed the very end where Tima is hanging and grabbing onto Kenichis hand. Your take on what she meant when she said who am I right before falling was super interesting! I could be totally wrong but when she said who am I and felt it totally click for me, like you said in the video she had been saying that over and over again the whole movie having this existential crisis with her identity. I feel like she tried to grab on as hard as she could to Kenichi‘s hand but that final “who am I” clicked into her mind an awakening and for a second she didn’t know if she was Kenichi or herself which triggered the epiphany that she was everyone at the same time, she was a god waking up realizing she was one of many incarnations of its existence. Watched this last night and completely fell in love with it.

I think you missed the mark with Rock. He's the Duke's adopted son, a nobody that gets lifted up into high society and political power by this larger-than-life figure. The Duke, intentionally or not, has brainwashed the boy into worshiping him and his ideals. You see this dynamic with religious institutions that found orphanages: it's not just a charitable service, it's a recruitment center for dogmatic followers. "By their grace, I was saved- and you can be too". It's a great way to create extremists who are willing to do whatever their saviors need of them. His character is shallow because the social sphere he was brought into didn't need him to be anything other than a blunt instrument. But like all human weapons, he's just as dangerous to his creators as he is to his enemies.
PS: There's also a lot of potential to illustrate how Rock is more of a robot than the actual robots. The robots in the film seem more capable of multi-dimensional thinking than Rock. Rock's single-minded focus on his mission means he's only useful (exploitable) in a singular capacity.
PPS: I think his group is supposed to be "The Marduks" which, combined with the Ziggurat symbolism (might also be a phonetic play on "Duke"), harkens back to Babylon. Marduk, as the patron god of Babylon, represents the status quo. You can also see this in the actual history, where Marduk rose in status within the Mesopotamian pantheon as Babylon rose politically in the region. Point is: Rock's group, the Marduks, is the military arm of society's status quo.

I decided to watch this movie off of randomly Googling anime movies to see about 2 - 3 years ago... off of seeing a short brand new anime movie released on Netflix. I was surprised at how beautiful its animation looked. As of now I can't recall the name of the movie, but I'd be happy to go and search for it if any reply asking.
Anyways, this movie was many to pop up in relation to anime movies through a quick Google search, and I seemed was honestly eager to view it due to its cool-looking movie poster.
New Year's of the year, I decided to stay up late at night and watch it in my room with headphones to "set the mood". I seen about 30 minutes of it, then fell asleep.
I soon woke up at around the 55 minute mark of the movie and watched till the end. I teared up at the end.
Some good time later I decided to rewatch the movie and I don't regret it one bit. It's not as great as Akira, but still beautiful and emotional on as how they draw Tima and Kenichi together. I'll never forgive this beautiful movie for pulling on my heart's strings.

Was the first anime movie I watched with my family when I was younger (probably shouldn't have been allowed but hey no nightmares just oohs and aaahs) and it opened my eyes to anime in general. Certain scenes I can remember and kind of feel the texture of it which is a weird thing for animation to get right is visually making me understand how that material must feel. The political aspects kinda went over my head then but the disparity between classes I knew well being smack in the middle. I wished more people talked about the movie since those early CGI visuals are bonkers and it stands out for it's visuals.

Just gonna say was a patreon subscriber. But the clear and obvious hate towards people on your opposing political views is really dumb. Especially when most of anime actually skews to what would be a "red" message. Have the strength to protect your own. Be competent to overcome by yourself. Take on struggles so others you care about don't have. Stay armed and ready. Family/comunity is extremely important

I don't think your "what vs. who" dialectic is weird at all. What's weird to me is the people who are unwilling to engage with a question like that for themselves. It's a very fulfilling endeavor.
Also, killer vid as usual, thank you. Im gonna check this one out. Team Madhouse forever.

this was an excellent video with some really interesting concepts!! I have to watch that film! I don't think though that I buy that if you come from the bottom of society and climb to the top, you are fundamentally different from the other people at the top. There's been studies that show getting a lot of money changes you. I believe a lot money kinda breaks your brain weather you've had it from birth or you gain it later in life. I think there's couple of reasons. Firstly if you have disgusting amount of money and see other people have nothing, you have to justify that somehow for yourself, and doubly if you had nothing or little before and know how bad it is. How others still have nothing and you do? I think it extremely easily leads you thinking you are just better and you deserve it. Otherwise the only reasonable thing is to distribute your wealth. Secondly the amount of money the ultra rich have, is just on such a different scale it has to distort your sense of scale. Most people have to be very economical with their every day groceries, so if you could buy mansions with your daily income, the meaning of money just fundamentally changes for you. Like I can remember when I was a kid and didn't have to worry about rent etc and 100 euros felt like a lot of money to me, but I can't go back to that mindset. And if you from low income to billionaire it's much much bigger jump than going from pocket money to low income.

It’s always nice to see other people see this wonderful masterpiece of a film. I wanted to throw my hat into the ring in regards to the question purposed at the end of the video, of what it means to be human, or to have humanity. Metropolis ask this question a lot and I found that after pondering the film after many rewatched that the film answers this question, and that answer is symbolized through the character of Kenichi. Kenichi is probably one of the most well executed characters that I have ever seen in any form of fiction and I don’t say that to be hyperbolic. Genuinely the way he is handled and how he is able to represent this super complex concept like humanity is perplexing as it is amazing. Kenichi is very much defined by who he is rather than what he is, which for comparison is the opposite of Rock, who rather than being the antagonist to Kenichi, is more of a foil to him. Rock is defined himself by being a Marduk and being Duke Red’s Right hand man and from his unwavering loyalty to his adoptive father he lost his humanity, ironically becoming more robotic than any of the machines in the film. Kenichi on the other hand is driven by his purity and just willingness to learn and understand. We aren’t given a lot of information to Kenichi’s background other than he’s an assistant detective to his Uncle, he’s from Japan, and that his parents aren’t in the picture anymore, but aside from that we aren’t shown or told anything about what Kenichi is, but rather we are shown who he is and that who is the embodiment of what it truly means to be human, to have humanity. Kenichi values and tries to understand the unfamiliar world around him, and he sympathetic to other people, even if the actions of those people are ones he doesn’t agree with, I.E Atlas’ Revolution which results in the destruction of many robots. He isn’t infallible either though, he can only watch as the world unfolds around him with very little input in terms of influence, however a little doesn’t mean none. There is one character that Kenichi’s influence has the most impact on and that’s Tima, through him Tima was able to learn and gain her own humanity through who Kenichi was, despite what she was. Their entire bond is symbolic of this, both literally and metaphorically. The first thing Kenichi does at the sight of Tima without question, is to help and protect her despite being giving a different objective and through out the rest of the film he tries his best to protect and keep her safe not because he has to, but because of the humanity within him gives him all the justification to help others. What I means to be human or to have humanity is to unconditionally help work towards bettering those around you and yourself in hopes to have a prosperous life and future, which is exactly what Kenichi does at the end of the film when he decides to stay in the city and rebuild Tima, to hopefully start a newer brighter future, that exist purely the reason having a better, more prosperous life.
Sorry if none of this makes any sense or is incoherent. I feel like it is really difficult to articulate with words how Metropolis masterfully symbolizes a single character with such a deep and meaningful concept, I feel as if watching the movie again and studying the characters and how they interact is a better way to grasp this very complicated idea, but ya that was just my two cents. I love Metropolis and I love Kenichi as a character, he’s definitely a character with the most depth I’ve seen in any form of fiction.

This guy said Rock was a weak villain, but honestly I think he's perfect. His personality is the polar opposite of Tima, and seemingly represents everything Tima isnt. Until you realize that if Kenichi never found her, she'd be just like him. He represents a dark mirror of Tima's potential future that Duke Red wanted to make a reality: A living weapon, and absolute hollow shell of a person. Rock's story is of a child losing his humanity, Tima's story is of a machine discovering her own. Another thing I feel worth mentioning is what the three villains, Rock, Duke Red, and Atlas (who definitely counts as a villain imo) all have in common. An obsession with something they romanticize and can never obtain. For Rock it's his dad's approval, Duke's is to turn Tima, his own child, into a literal god. Atlas is obsessed with this perverse idea of a revolution. Which brings us back to Kenichi, he is literally the perfect protagonist. He doesnt romanticize or view anything under such a corrupt worldview. His love for Tima is pure. His connection to her is pure. It's not corrupted or tainted by any of the viewpoints virtually all the other characters have.

Great video, as always. I disagree that slavery will always lead to revolt, if you can convince them that they are not slaves. Revolution really depends on organization, class consciousness, education and courage to rise up against their oppressors.

keep in mind, katsuhiro otomo is a prophetic writer, although he isnt a christian, and it is fiction, there is a little bit of reality in what he writes, God can and does still speak through whoever and whatever he wants to, and there still is prophetic elements that are actually happening in the predicted time frame, akira predicted the 2020 olympics woukd be held in tokyo, and would be cancelled due to an unforseen event, it also predicted the ammount of voilence and lawlessness we see today accurately, meteopolis seems to predict things that are starting to happen in real life right now as well, which is a whole list of things i think i could make an entire video about, but its all very interesting! Theres an even deeper level to it than most may realize! jules vern was another prophetic writer, and wrote about submarines before they ever existed!
