- Donald Trump has been greeted like a messiah at the Republican National Convention. But what if that bullet had been an inch to the right?

Just over 48 hours after narrowly escaping death from a gunman’s bullet, Trump has been confirmed as the Republican Party’s candidate for president in the upcoming election. He has named critic-turned-loyalist JD Vance as his running mate.
Andrew Marr joins Hannah Barnes on the New Statesman podcast to discuss how the attempt on Trump's life has impacted his standing among Republicans - and why political assassinations "never work".

"This is a man who never forgets" - gets someone to be his VP who called him hitler.
@firoshsaris1251 Donald Trump has appointed him so he can get the swing states
Oh Trump absolutely remembers but he’s a narcissist: what could be more fulfilling to his ego than to convert a bitter naysayer who was celebrated by the intellectual left for his criticism of Trump into an uber loyal heir apparent?
@@philipmatthewoconnor Come now!
Trump might love the comparison.
@@philipmatthewoconnorNo. He simply cares about the country putting aside his ego to choose JDV.
Does Vance not know that Pakistan already has nuclear weapons?
Of course he does, but most of his voter base don't
Not sure you’ve got it
He mentioned pakistan in his statement
he may not know Pakistan exists?
I assume he's undecided if Pakistan is Islamist or not.
I have actually heard similar criticisms of Britain by Muslims from Muslim countries: That we are particularly vulnerable to Islamism, because we don't understand Islam, and we're overly worried about being politically correct. Extremists know how to exploit those weaknesses. And the first victims are often moderate Muslims.
But the UK Labour party support 🇮🇱 . They are not Islam. ists.
@@randomhuman2595 But according to MAGA the mayor of London is the Emir of Londonistan.
I think they heard that from their mates Nige, Liz, Bozo and Cruella etc.
Strange that he referred to the Labour party, the issue is the five Islamist MPs elected on the Gaza ticket which is the concern.
@@zolandia5262 Yeah, perhaps that's a fair counter-argument. It will be interesting to see how Labour handles those MPs. Hopefully not by trying to further placate Islamism.
(Though of course, just because a Muslim is pro-Palestine and a vociferous critic of Israel, that doesn't necessarily mean they're an Islamist.)
@@zolandia5262 Firstly, just because someone is a Muslim, does not in any way mean that they are believers in radical Islam. Secondly, the revenge Israel is inflicting in Gaza, goes well beyond legitimate. Thirdly, we live in a democracy and they won the popular vote.
American here. Nobody's thought he was gonna try to broaden his appeal with a VP, loyalty has been central to the maga camp for a while.
American who voted for Trump here. Loyalty is what has always been missing from the Trump campaigns and administration.

But it’s the media that fuels the issue by using inflammatory language. The media is almost fully to blame imo.
"The media (as if it were a monolith)" reports on inflammatory language. Client journalism does exist for those who seek confirmation bias in an information silo, rather than objective reporting. We have become discerning, educated consumers in every sector, except media.
The media are to blame for so much more.
If only they were accountable when they lie,
@danmayberry1185 good points.. I think it's because news media (no opinion, just factual) became reporting opinion pieces / podcasts (such as this one), then on to entertainment in the click-baiting, click-chasing end of the spectrum (GeeBeebies)

I am still not convinced that Marr is right about Trump/Biden
😂😂😂😂😂😂
He's too old to understand the politics of today despite the candidates being near his age as well. It's funny.
To many people living in the United States, Trump winning the election in November is absolutely not a sure thing. It is disturbing to hear you talk as if it is.
Oh come on. The Americans would have to be idiots to vote for someone else. If you want to protect what's left and stop foreign wars it's your only choice.
It is though isn't it.
@@TheStubertosdefinitely not, I can't imagine him winning...the world cant

How does the present UK govt deal with silly remarks? By ignoring them. They aren't addressed to you, but to the 'Trump Base'.
Exactly
Well said. As usual we get an interesting analysis that I'm not really hearing anywhere else. Thanks both and NS team.
I love that at 2 min mark Marr says we have to be careful on both sides about the language we use, before accidentally saying Tramp instead of Trump 😆 The reality is a lot of the language used by politicians is for a native audience. I'm sure the political reality when you meet in person to deal with a national issue, most of that stuff bleeds into the background as the diplomats on both sides work away
I totally agree with Andrew Marr about assassination. Aside from my morality about taking another human life, I have always thought taking out Hits would have achieved nothing in preventing WWII or even the Holocaust.
There is a novel by Ben Elton which has the theme of trying to prevent an historical catastrophe through assassination. Well worth the read.
Let's remember that Trump was a Democrat - he has made the biggest possible flip flop
Yes, he donated to VP Kamala Harris' election campaign for California A-G.
He's been on different sides on so many issues.
That says much about his personality.
No is heart is small and is mind much more this is dark money to divide.
People change. Plus, the Democrats have taken a huge lurge to the left.
"He has been seen, right across the board, by, you know, writers and politicians of the left as well as the right as an exceptional talent when it comes to that".
Not by anybody who has actually read the book, surely? It is just full of smug superiority and lazy, stigmatising stereotypes about people in poverty. It shows that he is an assiduous non-reader of policy research. It shows that he still clings to the disproven idea that poverty is a behavioural problem. It shows that he lacks the sociological imagination.
Who are these people on the left that respect or admire him for his book? I need to know to make sure I stop taking them seriously in future.
My goodness! What about the words used by Trump et al?
What about them?
Words < optics < actions
Such as?
Maybe Vance had advanced sight of Leeds before he made the joking remark
The rioting in Leeds had nothing to do with the Islamist population. It was started when Social Services were trying to remove At-Risk Roma children.
This hasn't aged well.
4:54 "...what if the bullet had gone very slightly to the left"
should be, if I look at the footage again: '(half) an inch to the Right' [as seen from the shooter]
I highly value Andrew Marr’s views, but I think he is wrong in his valuation of the role of a ‘leader’. He underestimates the importance of charisma. Have you ever watched how a ‘bully’ acts? Back at primary school, where some boys (yes, they are male almost all the time!) have a natural ability to set up people against others, to make them do things they would otherwise never have done. This is not confined to the playing ground in primary schools, I ‘ve seen it happening everywhere, even among elderly people who should know better.
Yes, removing Trump from the political scene would vacate a position for some other would-be authoritarian, but almost certainly not someone with the same appeal. If Adolf Hitler had been killed in he early ‘30’s, the nazi movement had desintegrated very quickly, as there were many ‘successors’ but no one with the same combination of manipulating powers.
You’re just lost
'Trump is a man who never forgets'. He literally just appointed as Vice, someone who called him Americas Hitler. He clearly does forget.
Not necessarily. Trump idolises ‘strongmen’
@@Willard05 He loves other liars and frauds and charlatans.
He admits he was wrong about him during his admin also wasn't it his wife who said that?
He simply cares about the country's future.
He’s always willing to accept new “chumps”. The word frequently appears in his older books and basically means people he’s got over a barrel, or can manipulate freely. He’s primarily a businessman (or more accurately, confidence man) and doesn’t deal in concepts like “Trust”.- Trust is for chumps.
He prefers to have people in his pocket than on his side, and people who will sell out all their principles and beliefs for power are exactly the people that Trump understands best.
I find Trump to be insipid, uneducated, vulgar and spiteful, but he’s a very, very good con-man.
Andrew Marr, so what is a normal democratic society?
Got to be Britain tbh, we are fucking amazing at trundling along
I'm stunned that Marr believes that the people who call out Trump for what he is, including his current pick for VP, not just Democrats, inciting the shooting in part or at all. I shocked.
Words become sticks and stones. Good point
A very interesting discussion. Very good.
Oh dear 😢
Has Vance been to Bradford, Rotherham or Burnley?
There is a huge arrogance in this interview. Maybe Trump is simply picking people he likes and trusts. Who are the guardrails for.
?
Re. The rhetoric. Maybe Trump Jnr has a very small point, but very few on the left say that he is *literally the same as Hitler*, so you fall into his trap. Also, the more substantive thing is that even if Dems rhetoric plays a part in things, he is being deceitful if he doesn't also accept that Repubs' rhetoric does the same. And in truth, more aggressively and pervasively. You let him off the hook, Andrew.

With a post like this it shows your ignorance of history and present currant affairs. Well done, you did the double.
@@dulls8475 There are legitimate comparisons to be made between Hitler and Trump. It's a lazy argument to respond with 'Trump hasn't murdered millions of people therefore there can be no comparison'. Hitler's path to power, his (almost messianic) hold over his followers, the drivers behind that rise to power (Inflation, unemployment, perceived threat to livelihood from immigrants and others, hatred of liberalism, socialism and diversity), disrespect for political and even legal norms, are some of the areas where a comparison can be made. I'm sure there are others if I thought about it further. I could add that both have survived an assassination attempt.
@@dulls8475Trump is not Hitler. He is however a significant threat to America's system of democracy
Hitler and the nazis were horrendous, they had this thing called the Holocaust where they murdered 6 million innocent people. Comparing Trump to Hitler minimises that.

Do I detect a touch of wishful thinking Andrew?
And? So?

So Marr's argument is don't murder anyone in case someone worse than the victim takes over. This in a clip where the Hill Billy VP candidate Vance was being discussed. Any semi concious first year psychoanalyst will have a field day... and what was the woman in the clip sniggering and chortling about?

Is this guy still touting his garbage.
Vance made a joke about Britain (watch the clip). It suits his critics to assume it was said in ernest.
Does anyone know if the name Holroyd is related to the name Holyrood?
I googled it and it seems there’s a couple of origins for the name Holroyd.
There’s a Holerode in Sussex recorded in the 13th century, but it also seems that Holroyd is the anglicised spelling of the Irish Ó hAilcheartaidh, or ‘descendant of Ailcheartach’. The English Holroyd is anglo-saxon and is a habitational name meaning ‘hollow and clearing’.
Holyrood, however, seems to mean ‘holy cross’, or ‘holy rod’, in reference to a relic known as the True Cross, a supposed fragment of the cross which Christ was crucified on. The surname Holyrood would therefore be a habitational name referring to someone who lives near either the abbey of Holyrood in Ireland or the palace of Holyrood in Scotland. Either way, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious connection between Holroyd and Holyrood.
@@billder2655 Thanks. Because "Murgatroyd" originated as "Moorgate Road" I wondered if "Holroyd" might originally have been "Hole Road", or a road in a hollow. But "Holyrood" sounds very similar, so I wondered.
1:31 he came to that conclusion because we’ve imported some many Muslims. 😂
Vance the master snake oil salesman. Which unfortunately American has been falling for by now for centuries.
As an American woman, I think your thinking about Trump will be proved wrong. The 2025 plan is horrific. I know too many who will not be voting for him and are voting for Biden. And you need to look at how successful Biden has been in governing and improving the country.
Bank holiday?
Such wise words from Andrew Marr.
Indeed
What was wise about them? He said that Republicans have a point about what democrats have said comparing Trump to Hitler. The ONLY prominent national US politician that has called Trump Hitler is his own VP pick! Also the shooter has been registered a republican since he was 18. This really isn't a "two sides" thing like Marr makes out here.
@@Red1Green2Blue3 Oooh. Just like the media you were economical with the truth. Many democrats are republican members because of internal voting and visa versa. You also forgot his donation to a "lib cause".
@@Red1Green2Blue3nothing 2 sides with Andrew Marr anymore...😢
Perfect VP!
Surprised by the confusion, it was an obvious reference to the labour subservience to the pro gaza islamists - right or wrong that is the perception - clearly something to consider
It would be an even more ridiculous claim in that case, because Labour have if anything erred on the side of being apologists for Israel's actions in Gaza. Of course extremists on both sides won't like their attempt at a balanced position, but they actually lost several seats to independents at the general election due to the perception that they were too pro-Israel. The claim that a major UK political party is being controlled by pro-Israel extremists would rightly be condemned as anti-Semitic - the conspiracy theory you appear to support is even more absurd and more vile.
Mr. Marr , make the effort to watch Vance's speech. Can you not understand a tongue in cheek comment?
Nothing tongue in cheek about it.
David Lammy does not tweet ‘aggressively’, with respect, he tweets stupidly. This man said women can grow a cervix. When I heard that, I thought he was joking…turns out he wasn’t
At least Vance is intelligent. A discussion between Vance and Lammy would be funny were one a fly on the wall!
Again, with respect, I think you are taking advantage of people who watch this podcast being under informed. You must know perfectly well that ALL presidents change heads of government departments and government agencies to find those they can work with - these are not permanent positions. Trump did this less than his predecessors when he was POTUS. So feigning outrage that Trump might change heads of government services (broadly styled) is almost as silly as some of Lammy’s tweets. I apologise is I misinterpreted your tone and assumed you were feigning outrage and you merely did not know how the US system works.
Wheres the coverage of the brave mps who bravely refused the oath of allegiance gibberish?
You are on the wrong page
Andrew Marr does not have one idea how Trump thinks, why did he pick Vance it’s obvious, keep your friends close but your past enemies who can win him votes in swing states closer. If Trump wins he will speak nicely to Lammy but will he trust a far left politician from the UK, never. Starmer made a poor choice in what is becoming a more conservative USA and Europe.
Is Joe Biden still struggling to find his way off stage?
JD Vance is not a good person.

These two are hilarious from the land of Brexit. For the English to discuss anything politically in the U.S. is pure stupidity. Trump isn’t a ‘messiah.’ He’s the better option than Biden. Biden, a man who wouldn’t qualify for a driver’s license. And, yes, we want out of NATO.
I agree Biden is very old and his capability to actually be president, let alone campaign, is in question.
