Conspiracies are on the rise because people can see the world collapsing around them, but do not have the language to explain why. My conspiracy is that these conspiracies do a suspiciously fantastic job of shifting blame from those actually causing the collapse.

I’d argue that conspiracy theories are also on the rise because they usually have a grain of truth to them. If mainstream sources just tell people _“Move along, nothing to see here.”_ they may end up going down a rabbit-hole of more fantastical explanations.

    • @andybrice2711

But yes, I tend to agree with your meta-conspiracy-theory. They’re a suspiciously effective distraction.
Like if I were bribing politicians. It might be useful to spread rumours that I’m also a lizard-man who eats babies. In order to try and associate my critics with crazy people.

Both comments hit the nail on the head. Working people worldwide have seen a collapse is living standards and its easier to blame everything on some evil force.

Think that is an excellent point! Anglo-american big bank / big tech capitalist democracy is due for a collapse, and the process has been there for everyone to see for decades, especially since the Great Recession in 2007/2008.

    • @RationalAUS

@@haakontangvald-pedersen8374 I doubt big tech will collapse - it appears most of them are hoping democracy/ true capitalism collapses. This would translate into less regulation and sky high profits as they could monopolise further and make us more addictied than we already are to thier algorithms (sound a bit conspiratorial myself 😂🫣)

Regarding solutions: I think the trick is to fact-check your own side more. If you’re honest when you and your peers are wrong, that will foster trust.
But if you use fact-checking selectively as a political tactic, it quickly turns into a _Boy Who Cried Wolf_ scenario.

Are you anticipating that spontaneous outbreaks of virtuous unilateral self-examination will lead to a global pandemic of truth-telling and voluntary accountability, an end to mental illness, and ultimately the salvation of humanity? I'm just trying to imagine how it would go?

    • @andybrice2711
      @andybrice2711 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Ozymandi_as I wouldn't go that far, no! But if most journalists, commentators, and politicians prioritized truth above partisan narrative, then I think politics and media would be a great deal healthier. And public discourse would be less polarized and more constructive.

@@andybrice2711 I agree. A similar period of scapegoating and believing racist conspiracy theories in Germany in the 1930s resulted in the Holocaust, WW2 and Germany being defeated. As a result, for 80 years the Germans practiced "virtuous unilateral self-examination" to make sure they didn't fall into the same rabbit-hole. People are calling this the "post truth era" in America. We will recover, and regard this as a crazy period. I just hope it happens before we elect a dictator and go the same route as Germany.

I've long believed the Internet is going to have a similar impact on our society as the printing press had on late medieval society. What initially appeared to be a fabulous invention allowing dissemination of knowledge and information to the masses suddenly becoming a threat to the status quo.
My only hope is that while my children / grandchildren etc are going to live through a modern day reformation, we have advanced enough to avoid the worst excesses of what has now become known as the; European wars of religion, 1500 & 1700.
However, recent UK/EU legislation to crackdown on the freedom of information on the Internet suggests we're following a similar path to the one our ancestors did.
Information once again being too; challenging to interpret to those who haven't been educated correctly to understand its context properly.

The issue is that the higher ups protect friends. A certain financier had a global network of some of the world’s most powerful people.
Bill got on numerous flights with the financier, ironically there are photos showing a certain a republican presidential nominee partying with said financier. Qanon liken the nominee as a hero 🤔

It’s easy to dismiss all this as sheer nonsense which anyone with more sense than a half wit ought to be able to immediately dismiss :-) and that’s my first response cos I was lucky enough to have two advantages; first I had a good education and second I was born a very very long time before the internet and when ‘computers, were card driven slow machines. See what I mean….I learnt about the world when it was distanced from me by the radio, newspapers and the knowledge of a generation who thought telephones were a new invention!
People these days have no distance from an ocean of truths, lies; information and misinformation….so it’s incumbent of me to not rant at how dumb folk are…but patiently to teach folk to question rather than just believe something cos they saw it written down somewhere.
    I’m glad sometimes I’m 76 :-)

Absolutely agree! I came from that era too. It is unfair to just blame users for being unable to sort through the huge flood of misinformation and divine which is truth and which is lies. People are up against platforms run by AI-like algorithms with huge databases focused on our brainstems, expertly feeding us lies and conspiracies that inflame our worst prejudices, telling us what we want to hear, keeping us ignorant in filter bubbles. We need responsible regulation of the Silicon Valley monopolies that are causing all this
