Now in 2022 , I still have mine and it’s STILL FLAWLESS , runs perfect flys amazing !! One question , WHERE can I get DJI props for this model ? DJI themselves have a message saying they will notify me when they get them. I don’t want cheap knock offs. Original props please !!! This Cool black version is super stable and a workhorse. Love it
I will be receiving a replacement Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian edition after losing my original one back on Feb 2, 2018. After DJI analyzed my flight data records, they had determined that I did nothing wrong to cause my drone to lose power and drop into the ocean but only offered to compensate me 30% off the purchase of a replacement. Not happy with how I was treated by DJI Support but at least I’ll be getting another Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian after all this time!

Bought the P4P+ a month ago and have watched quite a few unboxing and descriptive videos, but yours by far was high quality film and a great verbal description of the Phantom 4 Pro + product. I have subscribed to your site.
I like it a lot, its my first done and I did zero research on drones period before buying it, but feel I just got lucky the more I fly and get the feel of it and watch videos like yours and others that give it high marks and reinforce my gut feeling about the product.
That a super nice first drone! Such great image quality, flight performance is outstanding. You definitely made a good choice. Let me know if you post any footage and I'll check it out. Did you ever fly a different, smaller drone or was this literally the first drone you've flown?
Finally got around to buying this drone.. I went from the 3 Pro to the Mavic but always wanted the Obsidian pro+... Just found a great deal on Ebay... Cant wait to use this... great review. Thanks
Greetings! Solid review! I purchased this model based largely based on your review and input from other places. Didn't buy the model with the accompanying screen on the controller -- decided to put the $ towards additional batteries.
I have the Phantom 4 Pro as well and love it, but I just wish it wasn't so obnoxiously sized. It's really challenging finding a bag that can fit that while also fitting all my DSLR equipment.
I completely agree. I wish the legs folded in, although I don’t know how that would work with the gimbal hanging. I have an inspire 1 pro which needs to be put together every time. I guess it’s always a balance between size/convenience and image quality
Is it accurate to say that the only difference between Phantom 4 Pro (white) and the Obsidian is the camera gimbal cover and the color. Other than that the specs are identical? I've also heard it's easier to see the Obsidian in a bright sky as the dark color makes it more apparent. Great video!
Yes, the color is the only difference. The dark color was easier for me to see in the bright blue sky for sure. Thank you for the compliment on the video (and hopefully subscribing!)

Love this review! After this video I’m considering buying this over the Mavic Air. I’m fairly new to flying drones but I will be using it for consumer photography. What are your thoughts? I’m a fairly mobile person which is why I considered the Air but the better specs of this P4P+ might just sway me. Advice? Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much. Appreciate you finding my channel. Have you looked into the Mavic Pro? It’s in between the Air and the p4p. The P4P is an awesome drone. It if mobility is a priority you may find yourself choosing to leave it behind rather than carrying it. They do make backpacks for it, but it’s something to consider. Do you think you’ll be driving to these destinations? Hiking?
You said it can fly 31 mph with obstacle avoidance still on but I've read that it slows down to about 20 mph with OA on. I know my Mavic Pro does that. It's slower with OA on. Only reaches top P Mode speed with OA off.

Tech Gear Talk You are right about the manual saying top speed in P Mode with OA on is 31 mph, however, many pilots in the DJI Forums say their P4P slows down when they have OA on. I know my Mavic does. I just got a P4P and haven’t flown it much due to bad weather. I love my Mavic Pro! Great drone. I have flown my P4P enough to know I’m really going to love it as well. Ok, so you're going for stability and image quality over portability. It's just harder to travel with or get it to where you want to fly, but it's definitely not as big and cumbersome as the Inspire 1 Pro. The case for that drone is big!
Well, I'm just starting out. Never flown before, but think I can pick up the usage as quickly as I did my wheelchair. I suppose free is really good, but if you think paid is better, I suppose I will need to figure out how to make that happen. Just about to buy the drone. The one that you are talking about I think. I'm not sure which would be more visible in the sky. I suppose I have to buy a tablet and ozmo also..yikes, it gets expensive. Hopefully I can figure out how to make some money with it. I have PC Microsoft. My phone is Android. I really appreciate you getting back to me!!!
Yes, 5 drones, all DJI Phantoms - 2, 3P & 4POb. Been flying (and crashing) since 2013. Really love the P4P Obsidian, except for the altitude limitation.
Get a card reader for the memory card from the P4P. If you use an iphone you can airdrop the files to your iphone. Otherwise, you'll need to use something like dropbox or google drive to transfer the files. Hope this helps.

Thank you for watching and for the kind feedback. The white and obsidian models are identical so it comes down to the color. You can look at it several ways. First, personally, I think the Obsidian version looks super cool. But second, I find that it's easier to see in the sky. Others may think the white version is easier to see. Which do you like better?
Somewhat off topic but i want to know about your monitor array! What are they, how do you run 5 monitors and how do you stretch a single image across all monitors? If you have a minute to respond, thank you, if not I understand too.
No problem. I actually have 6 monitors. 2 horizontal ones on the left, 2 horizontal ones on the right, and 2 vertical ones in the middle. Being able to extend the screen is built into windows. I have a video about it. It's my first video, so it's really bad.... but it will give you an overview. th-cam.com/video/zf5pFMNHEsc/w-d-xo.html I need to do an update that's a lot better. Hi have you experienced some range issue especially if compared to the Mavic pro? I have had in hand 2 different Obsidians and both lose signal a bit past 1km. My Mavic goes up to 5+k

The link is on the right techgeartalk.com I use the Mavic Pro more than any other drone because it's so small and portable. I never have to "think" about taking it, I just do. What kind of stuff do you plan on shooting? and what is the final product?
I'm actually shooting travel videos right now with my sony a6500 and a Tessar FE 24-70mm and I just love the footage. I also know the sensor on the P4P pro is the same as the sony rx100v. The Mavic Pro footage seems a alot more grainy and just doesn't look well in low light. :) Man you have a hell of gears! I really love how the bokeh looks on your footage and the auto focus in 1:22 is amazing.

Hey, I'm interested in buying the Pro+ version of the drone and I was wondering if the camera stays in a fixed point and the drone don't lose the satellites in a city area. To be more specific I want to monitorize the road traffic from a fixed point above the road (streets, in the city) and it's not very clear to me if this drone can do that, even for 20 minutes. Also, I would like to know if it can be used between buildings or with nearby electrical cables (usually found in a city). Thanks a lot!
I wouldn't suggest using it in a city. I don't know where you are but in the US you're not allowed to fly it over large groups of people, or over cars. Now, as far as ability, with GPS it can stay in the same spot until the battery dies. I don't know about losing satellites in a city area because as I mentioned, that is not something I would ever do.
@@TechGearTalk In Romania is not allowed to take off/land a drone in a city area, but the actual flying above the city it is permitted if you always keep the drone in your visual area (approx. 300 m). It's pretty weird but that is the law.
Are 20MP stills with the Phantom 4 Pro extracted from video footage, or do you need to hover the drone to capture hi-def photographs separately? Is it true that the version you can use with your phone or tablet is more compatible with 3rd party apps, and that the Pro+ controller is unalterable? Merci beaucoup✌😎
I always recommend hovering the drone to capture images. I would probably opt for the regular Pro model rather than the Pro+ because I'd rather pay for a tablet that I can use for other things.
@@TechGearTalk But how easy is it not not charge a tablet AND the controller. For regular drone use.. I'd recommend the pro+. My white pro fell out of the sky today after 3yrs solid use. Obsidian in today's market was still the best option imo.
I have Phantom 4 pro V2.0. I found is difficult to local the place which I want to down load, and after down load, How can I pull the down load map and use it. Cheers Mason Chan
I have a question (maybe dumb) but never can get a real answer from sales people. Can you reuse the sd cards??? I am continually buying them, and as you know they're not exactly cheap! Thanks for your help, from a real old guy on a budget, trying to enjoy his senior years.
You can absolutely reuse sd cards. (for the record, this drone and others, usually use micro sd cards but the answer is the same). You may need to format it in your particular drone for it to work. For example, I tried using the same micro sd card for my Inspire one (and some other device) and it wouldn't recognize it until I reformatted it inside the inspire. After I did that (which took 20 seconds) it was all good. Let me know if that makes sense.
Thanks a lot that really helped! I'm going to be a schmuck and ask 1 more question, now I am afraid to loose the photos and film I have retained. Do I download to cloud or flash drive, because there are to many GB's for my computer and disk, I'm using 64GB micro SanDisk, any suggestions???
You're not being a schmuck. That is an important question. If possible, I would back up in two places, onto an external drive, and to the cloud (something like Amazon S3 or Dropbox). That way you are protected. Another option, is to backup to 2 external drives and keep one in another location just for an emergency. Does that help?
Thank You Again! 1 last question and I'll be quiet for awhile?. With the Phantom 4 pro + is it possible to download the photos & films that are displayed in the Album section on my remote control, from previous flights?
Keep asking, I'd rather you not make mistakes if I can help it. You're going to want to save the files from the microSD card rather than what's on the remote. The remote will save a much lower quality version (because it has to be transmitted wirelessly while the drone is flying) whereas the copy on the microSD card will by higher res (1080P or 4K, whatever you selected)

I'll be gone for 4 weeks. Once I reenter the USA, I'll be headed straight for the GRAND CANYON in ARIZONA to complete my 12th hike of the canyon. Unfortunately, I will not be allowed to fly my P-4 Pro+ over the canyon because of FAA and Nat'l Park regulations.

I'll be taking my Canon VIXIA HF 60 HD Camcorder, so I will be getting some great video and pics. This will be my 7th road trip to ALASKA. Looking forward to the drive from the USA (Kansas City, Missouri) north up through ALBERTA, CANADA to JASPER and then west across BRITISH COLUMBIA to the coastal town of PRINCE RUPERT on the Pacific Ocean to catch the ALASKA FERRY for the 4 day cruise north through the beautiful INSIDE PASSAGE to the town of HOMER, ALASKA. The cruise on the FERRY is one of the most exciting legs of my adventure. Not only do I see a lot of HUMPBACK WHALES, DOLPHINS, ORCAS, SEALS and OTTERS along the way, but the FERRY will also make some great stops (for about 3 hours) in ports such as KETCHIKAN, JUNEAU, YAKUTAT, WHITTER, CHENEGA BAY and KODIAK ISLAND. From HOMER, I will be driving all over the state on the scenic and beautiful highways and byways of the great state of ALASKA, before heading back to the lower 48 via the famous ALASKA HIGHWAY through CANADA. I hope to capture lots of video footage and photos of wildlife for my video diary. I'll also be capturing some great footage of my 12th hike of the GRAND CANYON as well. So, this will be an adventure to remember. Again, thanks for that excellent review of the P-4 Pro+ Obsidian!! Your videos ROCK!!!!
Is there an option to disable the proximity sensors if, for example, you wanted to try something wacky like flying the drone from outside in through a spacious window in your home and landing it on the dinner table🙄 The sensors would surely prevent the drone from flying under such dodgy circumstances.
I'm pretty sure you can. I don't remember where it is in the menu, but I can do it with my Mavic Pro Platinum. You are super brave to fly this drone through a window 😮
@@TechGearTalk best off to do it in reverse.. that way you don't need to fly it into a small target. Fly away from the small target and then you can fly out in a straight line which lends itself to time lapse. And, of course reverse the footage in post. ;)
I have the same drone, Ive been having video drop outs, my mavic never has this problem. I tried manual options under "HD" for 2.4 or 5.8 and still no luck, suggestions?

Good choices. I love my Mavic Pro, it's so portable and it's the one I use most often. The Air looks interesting (I'll review it soon) and I just wonder on performance in any type of wind. The P4 Obsidian is awesome! It depends on how you plan on using your drone. Are you looking for something that you can always have with you, or when you go on dedicated "drone shoots"?
i watched a few videos of the Mavic Air's preformance in wind and its pretty solid, that way one of 3 worries about that drone. That, battery life and the controller. But everything else about it is pretty sweet. I've got a vlog channel and i'm about to start making short films so that's why I've been debating on which to get

If you're using the links in the description, then they offer DJI Refresh plan. (First, thank you for supporting my channel by using those links). Next, it's a good idea if you think you're likely to crash your drone. I have crashed each of my drones. 1 required that I send it in and get it repaired (because I flew it into a house - long story). Ended up costing me more than the insurance would have. We have a saying "if you haven't crashed your drone, then you haven't flown it enough" :)
I have not seen a PLUS with the built in screen. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't pay for that controller for a few reasons. 1. I would rather buy an ipad that I can use elsewhere. 2. if something happens to the controller, I have to replace with a more expensive controller containing a screen.
The compression from this drone is horrible, and I can't believe people aren't talking about it. It looks like cheap smartphone video. I got the exact same one you have, and have a really hard time blending this footage with footage from the Blackmagic Pocket 4K. Might have to go Inspire 2.
There are links in the description. I think when I did the video, the price was around $1700 for the pro+ and 1400 for the pro. Those links are updated with the lowest price so go check it out. Do you have a drone now?
Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian is the best looking Drone DJI has ever come up with. I showed very little interest in the White Drones because they just looked ,so,so and have a very plain, dead looking color.
Probably... but I sort of expect my drones to get scratched up so it's not something I super worry about. My Mavic is kinda scratched up too and again, it is what it is (for me). On a funny note, I sort of look at it as proof that I actually USE it! Do you have a drone now?
Hi, thank you for watching. No, the camera can not rotate with this model because you would then see the landing gears. However, you can simply rotate the drone. You can tilt the camera up and down. The only drones that would let you rotate the camera are ones where the landing gear moves up and out of the way. Keep in mind that once you rotate (pan) the camera to the side in those drones, flying will become more difficult because you no longer can fly based on what you see on the screen.

I know my Mavic does. I just got a P4P and haven’t flown it much due to bad weather. I love my Mavic Pro! Great drone. I have flown my P4P enough to know I’m really going to love it as well. Ok, so you're going for stability and image quality over portability. It's just harder to travel with or get it to where you want to fly, but it's definitely not as big and cumbersome as the Inspire 1 Pro. The case for that drone is big!

Well, I'm just starting out. Never flown before, but think I can pick up the usage as quickly as I did my wheelchair. I suppose free is really good, but if you think paid is better, I suppose I will need to figure out how to make that happen. Just about to buy the drone. The one that you are talking about I think. I'm not sure which would be more visible in the sky. I suppose I have to buy a tablet and ozmo also..yikes, it gets expensive. Hopefully I can figure out how to make some money with it. I have PC Microsoft. My phone is Android. I really appreciate you getting back to me!!!

Yes, 5 drones, all DJI Phantoms - 2, 3P & 4POb. Been flying (and crashing) since 2013. Really love the P4P Obsidian, except for the altitude limitation.
I totally hear you about the crashing. If you haven't crashed a drone, you haven't flown it enough.

Get a card reader for the memory card from the P4P. If you use an iphone you can airdrop the files to your iphone. Otherwise, you'll need to use something like dropbox or google drive to transfer the files. Hope this helps.

The white and obsidian models are identical so it comes down to the color. You can look at it several ways. First, personally, I think the Obsidian version looks super cool. But second, I find that it's easier to see in the sky. Others may think the white version is easier to see.

No problem. I actually have 6 monitors. 2 horizontal ones on the left, 2 horizontal ones on the right, and 2 vertical ones in the middle. Being able to extend the screen is built into windows. I have a video about it. It's my first video, so it's really bad.... but it will give you an overview. th-cam.com/video/zf5pFMNHEsc/w-d-xo.html I need to do an update that's a lot better.

Hi have you experienced some range issue especially if compared to the Mavic pro? I have had in hand 2 different Obsidians and both lose signal a bit past 1km. My Mavic goes up to 5+k

I think so. I'm not sure when I would use it over my Mavic Pro because I'm not sure how it will perform in any kind of wind. I use the Mavic Pro more than any other drone because it's so small and portable. I never have to "think" about taking it, I just do.
What kind of stuff do you plan on shooting? and what is the final product?
I'm actually shooting travel videos right now with my sony a6500 and a Tessar FE 24-70mm and I just love the footage. I also know the sensor on the P4P pro is the same as the sony rx100v. The Mavic Pro footage seems a alot more grainy and just doesn't look well in low light. :) Man you have a hell of gears! I really love how the bokeh looks on your footage and the auto focus in 1:22 is amazing.

Hey, I'm interested in buying the Pro+ version of the drone and I was wondering if the camera stays in a fixed point and the drone don't lose the satellites in a city area. To be more specific I want to monitorize the road traffic from a fixed point above the road (streets, in the city) and it's not very clear to me if this drone can do that, even for 20 minutes. Also, I would like to know if it can be used between buildings or with nearby electrical cables (usually found in a city). Thanks a lot!
I wouldn't suggest using it in a city. I don't know where you are but in the US you're not allowed to fly it over large groups of people, or over cars. Now, as far as ability, with GPS it can stay in the same spot until the battery dies.
I don't know about losing satellites in a city area because as I mentioned, that is not something I would ever do.

@@TechGearTalk In Romania is not allowed to take off/land a drone in a city area, but the actual flying above the city it is permitted if you always keep the drone in your visual area (approx. 300 m). It's pretty weird but that is the law.

Are 20MP stills with the Phantom 4 Pro extracted from video footage, or do you need to hover the drone to capture hi-def photographs separately? Is it true that the version you can use with your phone or tablet is more compatible with 3rd party apps, and that the Pro+ controller is unalterable? Merci beaucoup✌😎
I always recommend hovering the drone to capture images.
I would probably opt for the regular Pro model rather than the Pro+ because I'd rather pay for a tablet that I can use for other things.
@@TechGearTalk But how easy is it not not charge a tablet AND the controller. For regular drone use.. I'd recommend the pro+. My white pro fell out of the sky today after 3yrs solid use. Obsidian in today's market was still the best option imo.
I have Phantom 4 pro V2.0. I found is difficult to local the place which I want to down load, and after down load, How can I pull the down load map and use it.

I have a question (maybe dumb) but never can get a real answer from sales people. Can you reuse the sd cards??? I am continually buying them, and as you know they're not exactly cheap! Thanks for your help, from a real old guy on a budget, trying to enjoy his senior years.
You can absolutely reuse sd cards. (for the record, this drone and others, usually use micro sd cards but the answer is the same). You may need to format it in your particular drone for it to work. For example, I tried using the same micro sd card for my Inspire one (and some other device) and it wouldn't recognize it until I reformatted it inside the inspire. After I did that (which took 20 seconds) it was all good.

Thanks a lot that really helped! I'm going to be a schmuck and ask 1 more question, now I am afraid to loose the photos and film I have retained. Do I download to cloud or flash drive, because there are to many GB's for my computer and disk, I'm using 64GB micro SanDisk, any suggestions???
You're not being a schmuck. That is an important question.
If possible, I would back up in two places, onto an external drive, and to the cloud (something like Amazon S3 or Dropbox). That way you are protected.
Another option, is to backup to 2 external drives and keep one in another location just for an emergency.

Thank You Again! 1 last question and I'll be quiet for awhile?. With the Phantom 4 pro + is it possible to download the photos & films that are displayed in the Album section on my remote control, from previous flights?
Keep asking, I'd rather you not make mistakes if I can help it. You're going to want to save the files from the microSD card rather than what's on the remote. The remote will save a much lower quality version (because it has to be transmitted wirelessly while the drone is flying) whereas the copy on the microSD card will by higher res (1080P or 4K, whatever you selected)

How long?
I'll be gone for 4 weeks. Once I reenter the USA, I'll be headed straight for the GRAND CANYON in ARIZONA to complete my 12th hike of the canyon. Unfortunately, I will not be allowed to fly my P-4 Pro+ over the canyon because of FAA and Nat'l Park regulations.
That is going to be such a cool experience. Yup, no drones at the Grand Canyon, but just enjoy the experience. Are you taking any other photo/video gear?
I'll be taking my Canon VIXIA HF 60 HD Camcorder, so I will be getting some great video and pics. This will be my 7th road trip to ALASKA. Looking forward to the drive from the USA (Kansas City, Missouri) north up through ALBERTA, CANADA to JASPER and then west across BRITISH COLUMBIA to the coastal town of PRINCE RUPERT on the Pacific Ocean to catch the ALASKA FERRY for the 4 day cruise north through the beautiful INSIDE PASSAGE to the town of HOMER, ALASKA. The cruise on the FERRY is one of the most exciting legs of my adventure. Not only do I see a lot of HUMPBACK WHALES, DOLPHINS, ORCAS, SEALS and OTTERS along the way, but the FERRY will also make some great stops (for about 3 hours) in ports such as KETCHIKAN, JUNEAU, YAKUTAT, WHITTER, CHENEGA BAY and KODIAK ISLAND. From HOMER, I will be driving all over the state on the scenic and beautiful highways and byways of the great state of ALASKA, before heading back to the lower 48 via the famous ALASKA HIGHWAY through CANADA. I hope to capture lots of video footage and photos of wildlife for my video diary. I'll also be capturing some great footage of my 12th hike of the GRAND CANYON as well. So, this will be an adventure to remember. Again, thanks for that excellent review of the P-4 Pro+ Obsidian!! Your videos ROCK!!!!

Is there an option to disable the proximity sensors if, for example, you wanted to try something wacky like flying the drone from outside in through a spacious window in your home and landing it on the dinner table🙄 The sensors would surely prevent the drone from flying under such dodgy circumstances.
I'm pretty sure you can. I don't remember where it is in the menu, but I can do it with my Mavic Pro Platinum.

@@TechGearTalk best off to do it in reverse.. that way you don't need to fly it into a small target. Fly away from the small target and then you can fly out in a straight line which lends itself to time lapse. And, of course reverse the footage in post. ;)

You know, I've had similar experiences. Same here, Mavic never drops. I have found no consistent solution yet.

Tech Gear Talk I do, I've had a p3 for a while now but I've been debating on my next drone being the p4 obsidian, the mavic pro platinum or the mavic air, all are great and have advantages to them
Good choices. I love my Mavic Pro, it's so portable and it's the one I use most often. The Air looks interesting (I'll review it soon) and I just wonder on performance in any type of wind.
The P4 Obsidian is awesome! It depends on how you plan on using your drone.

i watched a few videos of the Mavic Air's preformance in wind and its pretty solid, that way one of 3 worries about that drone. That, battery life and the controller. Next, it's a good idea if you think you're likely to crash your drone. I have crashed each of my drones. 1 required that I send it in and get it repaired (because I flew it into a house - long story).
Ended up costing me more than the insurance would have.

I have not seen a PLUS with the built in screen.
If I were to do it again, I wouldn't pay for that controller for a few reasons. 1. I would rather buy an ipad that I can use elsewhere. 2. if something happens to the controller, I have to replace with a more expensive controller containing a screen.
The compression from this drone is horrible, and I can't believe people aren't talking about it. It looks like cheap smartphone video. I got the exact same one you have, and have a really hard time blending this footage with footage from the Blackmagic Pocket 4K. Might have to go Inspire 2.
What picture profile (I forget what DJI calls it) are you using?

Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian is the best looking Drone DJI has ever come up with. I showed very little interest in the White Drones because they just looked ,so,so and have a very plain, dead looking color.
Does the matt finish scratch easier than the white gloss finished standard version of the P4 Pro?
Probably... but I sort of expect my drones to get scratched up so it's not something I super worry about. My Mavic is kinda scratched up too and again, it is what it is (for me).
On a funny note, I sort of look at it as proof that I actually USE it!

can you control the camera rotation with the controller remotely like move it left right back and front??
Hi, thank you for watching.
No, the camera can not rotate with this model because you would then see the landing gears. However, you can simply rotate the drone.
You can tilt the camera up and down.
The only drones that would let you rotate the camera are ones where the landing gear moves up and out of the way.
Keep in mind that once you rotate (pan) the camera to the side in those drones, flying will become more difficult because you no longer can fly based on what you see on the screen.
the obsidian is not same that p4p, the caseshell and the gimball are reinforced.
