I would’ve made the enemies be bugs that will eat your food if you don’t fend them off.

Your progress is inspiring and the project looks great!
If I can give an unsolicited opinion though, I spent this whole video unconvinced of the need for a combat system at all. I was happy to see you muse on this question, but your answer of "combat is how the player will acquire resources" made me think "I thought you interacted with the environment using your tools to collect resources (farming, cutting trees etc)". This feeling was further compounded when for the rest of the video, you started essentially making a whole new game: new movement, a health system relevant only to this part, Tools and crafting are not the gameplay focus, a whole new card game system...
I'm not saying it will be a bad mashup/combination, I just remain unconvinced about the initial need for combat at all. Seeing how your plans minimize the mechanics you've already showcased in the last video reinforced the doubt in my mind about it. While thinking over this, the only answer I can think of for why this game would have combat at all boils down to "it's like stardew valley and stardew valley has combat"
I think it's good to branch out game mechanics and prevent the entire experience from being one-note. But from an outsider's perspective, it looks to me like the combat piece and the farming/shop sim piece have nothing to do with one another, besides the superficial aesthetics of cooking/food.
If you want more stategic gameplay, are there perhaps ways to achieve that in the scope of what the game already is? There seems to be a lot of room to me in a cooking/shop sim for the same kind of turn-based, tactical decision making you're pursuing through a combat system. For example cooking could be more complex than just "combine ingredients". Managing the oven temperature, flipping a dish at the right time, remembering to apply ingredients in the correct stages, not to mention the entire "running a shop" part... these could all be avenues to flesh out and deepen the core gameplay that would feel much more natural to the type of game this is, AND end up feeling more original to boot.
Anyway, feel free to take or leave this opinion. I'm sure the project will turn out awesome no matter which direction you go in. Glad you're sharing your work and getting support and feedback. Hope you continue making progress as fast as you are! :D

Hi, thank you so much for the kind words, it means a lot to me that you would take time out of your day to write something so kind and detailed with some great constructive criticism. Honestly you've pretty much hit the nail on the head, I've tried to pull the game in too many directions and it's losing it's identity because of it. The suggestions you've given are great and definitely given me something to think about going foward. I'm going to try to steer the game in a more focused direction from now. Once again thanks for the comment it really means a lot!

I completely agree with this comment. I might be biased because I hate map based turn-based combat systems but I wouldn’t like this system in a farming/nature/exploring game. It feels so fixed and farming/building things is already a pretty fixed activity. That’s why combat works well in stardew- it’s action packed which makes an exciting change up when you have had enough of watering your strawberries square by square. Also in the wild irl if you see an enemy like a wolf it’s not gonna attack you square by square-its gonna chase your a$$ down.

I think I speak for everyone watching when I say that I am extremely exited to play this! But please don't consider this as pressure to get the game done faster, take all the time you knead!
(haha get it? "knead" bakery pun, I'm hilarious)

Speaking as senior developer. George. Take a week off. Grab a pen, grab a block of papers. Write down _Everything_ . I do mean everything.
      * What features you currently have. (Walking, Cursor pointer, Hit Trees, etc). the sentence should be one line.. and "show details" if more.
      * How the features interact with each-other, dialogs, scripts, prefabs, animation, art objects.
      * What features you want your game to have. How you want it to look. Estimated time to develop such features. Make a Timeplan.
      * After that - take your block of everything and create a Trello , where you put features competed in a time-line and how long they took.
      * Once you done all this you estimate the time per day you will spend on coding. (2-4hours) perhaps with 2 pauses.
      * During these periods you document all you do each at the end of the day for 15min.
Now you will have a structured, controlled environment to create you game where you distribute the time for each part yourself, and not by random occurrence.
      * If you may, include also 2 hours into a 24h agenda where you also write down what you do during the day, what you want to do during the day, ( workout, groceries, hobbies, visit to city, friends etc ) ... Making your life into a schedule will help you so much in the long run.

I was watching these videos, and it gave me an idea for a game! It's like this, with the isometric view, but with a tactics rpg spin.

This was a fun watch. I've been off and on trying to learn coding and unity for a while. Just came back and decided to start with A* pathfinding and focus on 2D grid based games to keep the scope manageable to start. Can't wait to start prototyping! But I'm taking my time with this awesome tutorial I found to make sure I understand everything pretty well first.

Are you planning on adding the cooking and restaurant management side of the game as well? Just wondering if this combat really meshes, even though the themes are harmonious. I'm worried you could end up being burned out adding so many different features to the game (feature creep), and players may not be interested in every gameplay feature. Regardless, it's looking great and it's amazing to see how much you've accomplished in a small amount of time. Best of luck!

Thanks for the kind words, yeah honestly I have been thinking about this a lot lately, and I also think the game might be getting pulled into to many directions. I think I'm going to reel it back in a bit and take the game in a better more focused direction in the next devlog. Thanks for the comment, the constructive criticism is always welcome and is truly very helpful 😁

You keep your vision and all and make sure you shape the game you want it to be... but personally I don't think a turn based strategy combat is relaxing as obviously at some point the game will go from farming and beating up little grapes to a 4x game against a horde of Potato Zombies and Raddish Golems. Maybe instead of revamping the whole combat system you could keep it as it is and instead make an option for players to choose to either engage in the combat or send their own little food buddies (Foodies?) to engage in the combat with an auto resolve system.
Or you could work it from the ground up and just make it a casual hit with a weapon like Minecraft, it doesn't take that much brain power to go "I smack and I get no smack". Just my 2 cents but make surs your game is your vision! Don't wanna make this a Darkest Dungeons scenario!
    Best of luck!
    Console port maybe? *wink wink*

  • @Kasperbjerby
    @Kasperbjerby ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think that is the right fit.. I mean it is your game and all.. But you are mixing two very different genres and the combat system is a whole game by itself, and I think you will find that making it fun and balanced will be a huge amount of work and it will split the players focus between both of them.. It would be like the player is trying to play hearthstone and harvest moon at the same time.. Idk, we will have to wait and see, but I don't think it's a good idea, in my opinion a simple system like in stardew fits the genre better
