Rotors can rust within a week where I am. Doesn’t hurt them. When you’re in the rust belt these things are of no consequence, neither are tight callipers. One pad just wears quicker. At 15 years old this car looks like new in comparison to the same one that has lived here
It was on my trailer for two weeks before I "literally pushed it off the trailer in front of his shop". Thanks for the compliment, there is a couple issues with the paint like the Wizard pointed out. Had one for 11 years and 187k miles. I was surprisingly reliable until the last two years. Lots of small expensive things, just like a Merc. The tires were also a pain in the ass. 18s in the front, 19s innthe rear, and both really low profile. It became hard to find tires at a reasonable price, and you were screwed if you had a flat. No spare, and few tire shops stocked the sizes this thing took. You always had to order the rears and wait a while for them to come in. Fun car. And a lots of looks at the gas station. Great stereo in the limited models, too.
I bought the 2005 SRT-6 at 21 yo back in 2009 and went through rear tires every 3 months or so. I was able to find a dealer on EBay and got the pair for $350. It had Goodyear Eagle sports that were $450 per tire back when cars barely had 19 inch wheels and I was not paying that much. I finally got smart and stopped burning them off and they’d last a year or so. It got a lot of attention because most people didn’t know what it was. Some thought it was a Porsche and when I’d say Chrysler their jaws would drop. One of my coworkers had a brother and he said it was gay looking until he went for a ride in it. I did a 200+ foot burn out (unintentionally) and jumped on the highway. By the time I was done he said he wanted one
@@Mik3y2087 it ate tires pretty quick, until I found a place that did a proper alignment on it. Then the tires lasted much, much longer. It took them HOURS to do the alignment properly. @@porcelainthunder2213 I didn’t trust anyone but Mercedes to do an alignment on mine. Didn’t take them very long and was pretty reasonable. Mine is long gone as well. Some days I wish I still had it. A drunk driver plowed into it and managed to total it while it was parked.
Everyone has the tires now. Everyone. Tirerack is always in stock. Correct, there's no spare...because the front and back are different sizes. That's why under the trunk floor liner there's a can of tire leak stop and an air pump.
The 2007 years Chrysler Crossfires are more rare due to it was the last year of production and at that point you could only boy one per order-made. Can't help but love the Crossfire!

Both Chrysler and Mercedes Benz have distinctive design languages and you can really see the difference above and below. Seeing underneath a (real) Chrysler of that era would be an interesting comparison.
The Mopar Radiator hoses are immaculate compared to the Mercedes hoses. Chryslers of this era had interchangeable Mercedes parts sometimes to the detriment of Chrysler products that were not designed for the part. Chryslers are designed to be driven hard and poorly maintained like any consumer brand. When they are forced to use a Mercedes part, it hurts perceived reliability.

Isn't it strange how people have different ownership experiences. My wife had a Honda Accord that was very problematic. She traded it in on the current generation Toyota RAV4 and that has had several issues. She has had more problems in 25k miles than my Buick Regal Tour X has had in 85k miles.
Didn't know this although I probably could have guessed since it was Daimler Chrsyler for years. My 06 Jeep Wrangler was part of the Daimler Chrysler era. Good info, thanks Wizard.

I don't care what Jeremy Clarkson said about their styling, I actually quite like them. Just a shame they never got a V8. And yep, crank position sensor a very common fault on the M112 / M113, the replacements are uprated so should last. Also cam cover gaskets, common thing with age but once done should be good for another 10 years.
I lucked up on a 2008 CF with a driveshaft center bearing problem, just got that piece in today and it has an A-arm bent something I haven’t had a chance to put it in the air yet. Just got a sweet gig at an auto shop so that’s so sweet. Having intermittent No start always starts the second time. There is something about this car that just draws to it. 147,000 on the odometer. Awesome.
I recently got one of these. It is an absolute hoot to drive, unlike any Chrysler product in my opinion. The best way to make a Chrysler drive well is to let someone else build it.
The relay control module is also a problem with these cars, the solder cracks from heat cycling and separates. You can replace the whole module or resolder the connection.
I took a quick look through the comments and didn't see anyone else that picked up on your "Crossfire!" comment as a throwback to the Crossfire board game. You have to have been alive in the 80's to remember. I wanted one as a kid but never got one. Good times.
My grandparents have a 2005 Yellow convertible. Only 32,000kms on it. Idk what that is in miles but it still has the factory black paint on the rear muffler.
Maybe we should rename it a Chrysler Ceasefire. LOL. Thanks Car Wizard. This was essentially a hand-me-down chassis from Mercedes as the SLK had already moved on to the second gen chassis and gave Chrysler this cast-off 1st gen SLK bones to build the car on. The 1st gen car actually dates back to the late 90s.
I've got a black manual coupe just like this and it's a pretty neat feeling car. It feels more expensive than it was to buy used, and mines got around 160k miles and still feels great.

Thank you for getting my car going @Car Wizard. And thank you to Mrs. Wizard for your review of the interior. My Mom had one of these, it was a convertible soft top, red with white interior. I took it down the coast to Santa Barbara when it first came out and I got so many looks and people telling me it was cool and asking what it was, it was pretty crazy.
I've always like the looks of the Crossfire, although I do think the convertible is the better looking over the coupe. Sounds like this car has given plenty of miles to its' owner/s, exactly what we like to see; a machine being used.
I'm the opposite. I think the coupe is what makes a Crossfire a Crossfire. I just got that car in September and have put a little over four thousand miles on it.
They are a bit shit to drive to be honest. Gearbox change is sloppy and the recirculating ball steering feels like something from the 1950's (because it is) - and coupe or convertible, they flex like a sheet of plastic. They feel like what they are, old Mercedes tech from the 1980's and prior.
@@Beer_Dad1975 I've always had trucks and SUVs, so this is my first true sports car. @@emmanuelmcallister5412 It's not a terrible car at all, it's just more of a cruiser than a sports car, in my opinion. Depends on your budget, but in this age bracket and price range the king of daily drivable affordable sports cars used to be the S2000 which are amazing to drive - I haven't looked, but I suspect they have probably skyrocketed in price and are no longer affordable. Otherwise if you have a little more money & want something that feels like laser precision compared to pretty much anything else road legal, you can't go past a Lotus - I've been lucky enough to drive a few models on the track and they are always extremely memorable. Drove an Exige S back to back with a Ferrari F430, and the Exige was in my opinion the far more entertaining car. Probably not so great as a daily though, especially at my age.
Thanks, it's fun seeing the car I own featured. That one has seen some abuse. Aftermarket steering wheel and all the plastic underneath is gone. I painted the grey windshield trim to match the body. I try to do my own oil changes on everything I own and I was happy to find out the 3.2 oil change is done on the ground.
While I recognize that I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself, I wouldn't call this car abused. It absolutely has some bumps and scrapes. It's a used automobile.
When the 300c was launched in Europe it surprised everyone that underneath it was basically a w210 e class but I personally think that's a good thing. I was always staggered how long they kept that old w202 steering box platform for the crossfire though. The rear suspension was so good by design it has basically never changed since the 190. Sorry, I'm a Mercedes fan haha.

This is not true. This is a third generation LH car. It was already going to be rear wheel drive. Mercedes delayed the project and insisted that some of their own parts be stuffed into it but no it is not based on the old E-Class.
Back when I was repairing A/C on M.B.s the Pentastar logo was clearly visible on the programer. Got wise to that quick and got replacements from Chrysler. Saved a trip back and forth across the pond, more than a few$$$ and more often than not, obtained in two hours instead of two weeks.
Funny I had a customer with an SRT with a busted intercooler. Chrysler had a list of $480 and would take a week to get. Read the Mercedes part number off to a Benz dealer, listed for $320 and had it in stock.
Thanks Wizard for another very informative video. With all the Mercedes parts on the Crossfire, does it mean the cost of repair is higher than the average Chrysler product?
Had a 05 SRT6 that I bought for nearly 50% off the 47k original sticker 2007. The Crossfires did not sell well at all! It had like 599 miles and still most of the fac warranty as it was only titled in 07!! It was a great car very dependable and quick. Sold it and bought a 2011 BMW 335is., i regretted the BMW purchase as it was not dependable like the SRT6😂
It sold well on the first 2 years. Close to Miata numbers. I believe like 45000 in the first two years. It barely sold in 06-07 and 08. Maybe it was just dealers overstocking them though. Not too sure.
On your next multiple guess question. How about adding a time lapse of you walking, taking short steps, around the car. Then when you've made one lap supply the answer. Maybe even syncing the music with you movements. Just a fun thought of adding a visual timer.

M112 hands down better than the m272...m112/113 are as close to bulletproof as you can get...rust and paint are a different story (on the MB back then)
I owned cars with both engines. The M112 is bulletproof. But the later 272 are also quit bulletproof. The m272 revs better and has a better power band .
@@gnomiefirst9201 I believe typically these era of Benz cars don’t show anything on the tach until it fires up. Don’t quote me though. They’re quite inexpensive and not impossible to change. If you’re having this issue, that’s what I would do. I keep one in my garage, and if I do a road trip I have it in the trunk with a coil, and an injector. Those are pretty much what will keep you from getting home on a road trip
I owned an SRT for about 5yrs before someone rear ended it. Spent more time on the back of a tow truck than on the road but when it worked man was it a blast. Also because it’s a Benz you can’t just get it serviced anywhere and you can’t just go to Benz dealer. Crank issues could be cps, but also the fuse box under the hood is another area which can cause this problem. Wait until you have issues with the SKREEM. Lots of fun when your out on the town have keys and can’t get in your car.
This Crossfire looks a lot better than the PT Cruiser. The PT Cruiser is totally unreliable but this Crossfire is very reliable. The Car Wizard agrees on this.
Check vital signs first.. I paused at 6:55.. spark fuel compression.. hit the air cleaner with a mist of contact cleaner.. if no response.. then put a plug in one of the coils and crank it.. no hint of spark is usually primary ignition.
The first thing I would have done is take out a spark plug, reconnect it outside the engine, make sure I see it sparking to let me know the ignition system is at least working enough that the engine should start. Next I’d check the fuel pressure to see if the fuel pump works. If it’s the crank position sensor, I’d hope there’d be an OBD2 code saying there’s a fault with that. When you listed the options my guess was the fuel pump. Thanks for the valuable information about crank sensors! I learn more with every video of yours I watch!
Very informative for non mercedes gearheads. While inspecting under the car mentioned about mb lables, you forgot to point out about classic mb multilink suspension.
I love the Crossfire mainly because of it’s design and those oversized wheels. I as of recent months was sketching out how a future Crossfire would look like.
I had an engine crankshaft position sensor start to fail on a 2011BMW 328i. The problem that I experienced was that once in a long while the engine would stall when I came to a stop. It took the BMW dealer a few days to locate the problem. The problem did not bring in any trouble codes. So it took awhile for the BMW dealer to duplicate the intermittent problem and determine that the engine crankshaft position sensor would intermittently fail. They replaced the engine crankshaft position sensor and that eliminated the engine stall problem.

@@gillesthibault429 True! Probably one of the reasons those cars are still reasonably competitive so many years later. A good solid platform developed before Daimler loaded their vehicles with overly complex electronic wizardry that no one can repair.
We love out '05 Crossfire Limited Roadster with tuxedo interior and 48k miles! Big reason we bought it is it is an MB and the 13th MB we've had since 2010. I have ordered the typical items that need replaced on these MB SLK 320s... transmission mount, crank shaft sensor etc! Thanks for highlighting this short production vehicle from the Daimler/Chrysler merge.
Never been so ecstatic to get the problem right first try :D You're really teaching me something Wizard!
The clear coat on the hood is shot and there is a spot in the rear that has been in an impact with another car. As a 90s kid, your reference to the Crossfire commercial was not lost on me. Nice one!
I paid numerous other places to do alignments, and it always seemed to go out very quickly. Somehow, the last place nailed it. Too bad its not there anymore, but my xfire is long gone.
Still looks current today. Love these!
The 2007 years Chrysler Crossfires are more rare due to it was the last year of production and at that point you could only boy one per order-made.
Can't help but love the Crossfire!
The old classic "only problem with the car is you have to push it in order for it to go anywhere". I love the frequency with which you've been cranking out the content lately! Bringing blue collar Midwest work ethic into TH-cam
Both Chrysler and Mercedes Benz have distinctive design languages and you can really see the difference above and below. Seeing underneath a (real) Chrysler of that era would be an interesting comparison.
Nobody wants to see under a Pity Cruiser.
When you open the door on a Chrysler Crossfire you can actually see the body lines of the SLK Roadster it's built on running down the door jamb
They made a really cool two-tone color with beige and black that I loved in this car. I’d like to own one of these one day.
I would consider moving to Kansas to be near your shop. I think you're great 💯👍
Chrysler had a hard time selling those. My brother bought a new one which was a year and a half old. Got a great deal on it.

My wife had a Honda Accord that was very problematic.
She traded it in on the current generation Toyota RAV4 and that has had several issues.

Awesome.
My favorite detail about this is that the rear end is inspired by the AMC Marlin
I recently got one of these. It is an absolute hoot to drive, unlike any Chrysler product in my opinion. The best way to make a Chrysler drive well is to let someone else build it.
The relay control module is also a problem with these cars, the solder cracks from heat cycling and separates. You can replace the whole module or resolder the connection.
that was my first thought
All RCM modules (K40 on a MB SLK) come from the factory with weak soldering. TH-cam solder fix instructions are available.
Very informative. I just got my 2004 last week. Thanks for going over things I didn’t know.
I had several ones over the years, normally the crankshaft sensor fails as well as the abs position wheel as well

True. It's fine as a used car though.
I've got a black manual coupe just like this and it's a pretty neat feeling car. It feels more expensive than it was to buy used, and mines got around 160k miles and still feels great.
I remember being a Chrysler salesman back when the Mercedes merger finally finished and how hyped we were to sell Chrysler badged MB cars.

The simple Mercedes cars are really underrated. I am a fan of Mercedes now that I have own the Crossfire.
For the most part yes. Parts are higher for it and it can be more troublesome to diagnose.
I think that you do a good job of instructing viewers by not assuming that we all know what you know Mr. Wizard. Really good video.
Had a 05 SRT6 that I bought for nearly 50% off the 47k original sticker 2007. The Crossfires did not sell well at all! It sold well on the first 2 years. Close to Miata numbers. I believe like 45000 in the first two years. It barely sold in 06-07 and 08. Maybe it was just dealers overstocking them though. Not too sure.

@@gnomiefirst9201 I believe typically these era of Benz cars don’t show anything on the tach until it fires up. Don’t quote me though. They’re quite inexpensive and not impossible to change. Those are pretty much what will keep you from getting home on a road trip
Sorry wizard, jumped in before I got to the question segment

Gorgeous car, have no idea why the hate !
One of the UGLIEST cars ever made!
It's funny because that's a common response. You either love it (like me) or hate it (like you). There is no in-between.

I love the Crossfire mainly because of it’s design and those oversized wheels. I as of recent months was sketching out how a future Crossfire would look like.
6:17 Is that an Aventador SV Roadster in the background? Wow.
