I worked at the May Co in 1987-1989 and SCP was one of the highest ranking retail destinations in the country. Our store was by far the top money maker for the entire company. It was crazy busy at Christmas time. SCP was a great place to shop and hang out in the 80’s.
That Rainforest Cafe was previously a Carl's Jr. I've never seen a larger Carl's Jr. than the one that occupied that space. I think Carl's was gone by 96-97. As a preteen kid in the late 80's, I'd get a burrito and cherry coke from Del Taco, then head over to the arcade inside of Sears for video games.
I remember always going to oshman sporting good store by the big water fountain. I also remember footlocker which was there for a lot of years til it got replaced by jd sports. Great memories!
This is the "Last Man Standing" as far as Orange County malls, I believe. Westminster Mall is toast, as is Laguna Hills mall. "The Shops at Mission Viejo" is on life support. The whole concept is dated, especially enclosed malls in S. CA. South Coast Plaza is "Rodeo Drive South" so they get the rich people, I guess that's what is keeping them alive.
There's a lot of $ being exchanged there. I knew a couple that met working at two different luxury brand stores. They met each other as workers and were from my old church. They told me they made high incomes there on commission. Each person was making over $100k annually, during the middle of covid, mind you! So yeah, richy folks totally support that place.
My family visited SCP quite often in the 70s. Always liked going there. They had this weird oil fountain thing by the MayCo that was interesting. My brother got busted stealing some stupid thing in Sears. My parents actually got paged in the mall to come pick us up. That was not fun. Overall, it was a fun place.
I remember there was a comic shop here in the late 90's called Cosmic Comics, also in the 80's there was a Warehouse Video inside the mall, now it's a boring generic shopping center for the rich
I used to visit the area back in 2000 when my sister lived there. It was the highlight of my trip 😂 i would go to jamba juice and shop at pacsun, the finish the day at the theater. Shame how people today have ruined what was once a great place
@@remmymafia3889loved that Carls they had a beer dispenser, i guess to service all construction workers during the ‘85 renovation. My 16 year old self used to western bacon combo and fill my cup with beer! Yes, it was that easy😂
@@foxxyguy2681 Which part of the Mall, are you talking? The third floor? the extension across Bear Street..? 50% vacant. Not good. Sears closed, Not good... The Mal will not make it to 2025.
@@cmscms123456The Third floor is abandoned simply because literally nobody knows about it. Not even long time mall goers are aware of the 3rd floor’s existence.

I remember my mom bringing my brother and I pre 2000 and taking us to the Del Taco @ south coast. Rainforest cafe was right next to it.

There is still Santa Ana Mainplace and Brea Mall that are doing alright.
Is the fashion island a dead mall too?
@@bobbazoid909 Oh man, has been since the 80's.....

thanks for sharing those memories, I was going there in the mid 1980s
Wow. Back then petty shoplifting was really frowned upon. Now.. it's included in the price of the products.

Gamesmanship! It was located near Sears, and right next to Sears was Carles Jr. I wish you had footage of that.
ooooh, footage of a Carls Jr., I'm waiting with baited breath.
