The island of the blue dolphins was such an important book in my younger teenage years. Thank you for this video. My daughter visited Santa Catalina island for a week in middle school . She had a wonderful time and I hope many more children of California get to experience this wonderful natural resource. These islands should belong to all of us and for our children for years to come
The book "The Island of the Blue Dophins" changed my life, and I was thrilled to find this video
My mother sent my copy of that book- from circa 1978 for my daughters to enjoy. She remembered how much it meant to me.

The book is so heartbreaking to read as an adult. As a child, it sounds like such an adventure. As a mother, it made me cry. It's beautifully written. It's hard to learn about the true ending of her life. How it continued to be lonely. It's a sad story.

I'm Swiss and I never saw any doc about the channel islands in Cali but this will sure not be my last, this doc got me all emotional, from the beginning to the end! What an amazing history, landscape and people there... I hope when I pass, my soul will visit all of the islands before I definitively leave this place, to bathe in the serenity and absolute beauty of this special corner on this earth! Thank you for this upload!

Anne, you should try to visit if at all possible. I spent many summers on Catalina Island when I was growing up, and there is just a certain vibration, smell, and feeling there.

Growing up in santa barbara my family had a small sailboat. We spent numerous summers exploring the channel and fishing around the islands. The surf is both epic and dangerous, the wildlife is vigorous and eclectic, the landscape is magnetic.
I'm a 2nd generation native Californian, daughter of a migrant farm worker who worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the influx of dust bowl "Okies". In 1964 I boarded a Navy Constellation and flew for the first time in my life. We landed on "The Rock", what many called San Nicolas Island at the time. It was almost completely barren except for the shacks & radar dishes, and the quarters, mess, etc. that supported the workers, both military and civilian. I'd read, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" but couldn't associate the idyllic notion it portrayed, with this sterile looking wasteland around me. Today, seeing the dedication of so many to the restoration and preservation of the islands fills me with gratitude.
Land preservation is so important people need to know and understand about history and family history!
What an enjoyable and educational experience. I appreciate your effort to bring lesser known areas to our attention. I am the richer for these documentaries.

I’m from California, born and raised here, still live here, and love this state so much! But I’ve been beginning to realize how little I know about this place, and how much I want to learn more.
The part that made me particularly emotional was about Juana Maria, the lone woman of San Nicolas Island. I first read the book “Island of the Blue Dolphins” in 4th Grade, and I’ve loved it ever since. I remember my class talking about her history, and even watched a movie adaptation of the book.
I still have a copy of the book, and will reread it from time to time. I’m not sure what I loved specifically about it as a child (other than it being beautifully written), but it hits way differently reading it as an adult. Now whenever I reread it, it never fails to make me cry!!
I knew practically nothing about the Channel Islands, so this was a great educational experience. I look forward to finding out more about them, and my beloved California in general. 💜

@@SweetChicagoGator weather and geography, definitely! The Mediterranean climate, the beautiful hills & mountains, the trees, and the coastline. So beautiful!! I can easily summarize it with that, but I can definitely give specific details about both categories if asked. 😁
I also love and appreciate the diversity in people here- I love how diverse Cali is in terms of ethnic & cultural groups. So because of that, and because I live in capital city region, I love the different types of cuisines you can find. I have a long list of ethnic restaurants I want to go to, lol! I love trying out new cuisines and learning about their origin countries. I mean, food is a type of love language, and you can learn so much about people and their culture that way! (I’m a total foodie, and I love to cook & bake, love trying out recipes from different countries, so I talk about food a lot. LOL!)
Speaking of food, since California used to be apart of Mexico, it’s pretty easy to find great Mexican restaurants just about anywhere you go. I looove Mexican food! 🤤
…and now I’m really hungry and craving multiple types of cuisines. LOL

As a former assistant Chef I love to cook as well and go to ethnic restaurants. Love Mexican and I live in Chicago and we have plenty of Mexican restaurants that are delicious ! Great description you gave of your likes of California geography.

As far as work, I’ve predominantly been in childcare: mostly as a nanny, and working with elementary school children. But due to a really crappy, lifelong autoimmune illness, I’ve been more or less “housewifing” (lol) for the last several years. I still often take care of my loved one’s kids, and will house sit & pet sit for family & friends, when needed. 💜
I can see Catalina from my house on most days, sometimes so clearly you can practically count the trees.
I worked in the music industry for a good portion of my life, & always knew that Joe Walsh was an exceptional man, by virtue of the fact that he was able to remain in a band with Don Henley for as long as he did! To say that Don is a bigger jerk than Gene Simmons & Ted Nugent COMBINED would be a gross understatement of epic proportions.
Joe's quite the opposite. I'm so glad, & not at all surprised, to learn that he found something as worthwhile as the preservation of Santa Cruz Island to provide a sense of purpose & keep him grounded. It's rare that a man can look back on his life's accomplishments & say that he will leave this world a better place than he found it. Thanks for all you've done, Joe! You're the real deal! 💯🌎❤️ ✌🏼

I’m actually somewhat aware of these islands. I’m born and raised in Santa Monica and I’ve been to Santa Cruz Island, spent the day hiking from Prisoners Harbor to Pelican Bay viewpoint with my Aunt from Minnesota. It was one of the best days!
Taking the ferry over and feeling so small. To the untouched, pristine nature…it was AMAZING!
We did some research at the time but neither of us knew THE Joe Walsh is involved in the preservation. Makes us love him ever more! Which we didn’t know was possible.
I’m so grateful to be from here, I tell myself every day and I know how lucky I am❤
I woke up and watched this w my coffee in the morning. It was such a good piece. I absolutely adored all of the history and the animals of the Islands. Then you speak of their beliefs and things they've done for many years. It got me emotional.God bless all who were a part of the Islands and writing this piece, it filled my mind and heart w knowledge. 💓

The story of the bag of trash that had a piece of mail in it was, for me, a very Alice's Restaurant moment.

Its weird they didn't talk about the Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth. It was very cool they spoke of the red wood box.
I loved this! My dad did research from mid60's to '73 on Flathead Lake in MT, that helped with the ban of DDT. There was a dangerous decline in the Osprey population, due to cherry growers using DDT in the orchards. The over spray went into the lake, the fish ingested the DDT,
and soft shell eggs were not hatching. I'm so happy to see areas that were poisoned by DDT come back to natural wildlife. Great job to everyone involved. My dad would've loved to see this.....

My only complaint of the video is one of the opening statements. There are 9 islands off the California coast, you forgot Farallon Island, which is further west than any of the Channel Islands.

Loved the Eagles for 50 years. Learning that Joe Walsh has been doing this for the past 27 years is awsome. Knowing how he struggled all these years, I found it relieving that he could find peace and a purpose while proving to Don Henley that he overcame and learned how to live.
From beginning to end, this is the most beautiful, loving, spiritual documentary I've ever watched. This touches on so many aspects of the Awakening.

I live on the coast of Ventura County and these are what I call my Islands.
Lol. Same here. I've been there more times than I can't count anymore from tearing out evasive plants and replanting natives to taking groups of kids out there on adventure hikes, snorkeling and kayaking. Camping os beautiful out there too. My Islands. 🙂

We cruise these islands at least once a year. They’re absolutely magical.
My wife and I honeymooned on Catalina Island. We toured the backcountry and saw a perspective of what California used to look like before we changed it. To put it mildly. Thank you.

Really loved this, thank you. I grew up in SoCal but I’ve never been to any of the Channel Islands and I really hope to one day. My family recently spread my parents ashes near Catalina. My dad loved it there. We came close to moving to Catalina when I was in high school.

This was amazing to watch! Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I never knew any of this. The best part was getting the invasive animals off the island. Reintroducing native vegetation and the foxes and The Bald Eagle-wow! Great dedication and love! The Chumash Tribe are such wonderful intelligent people. I am so glad they started this tradition to honor their ancestors!

When at UCSB Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz were directly off shore. Wonder if Joe fell in love w them when he lived in Santa Barbara ? The islands seemed part of SB all the while not. I recall a disagreement on the removal of some residents on one of the islands. Great documentary there has been a trend in history to ignore recent history. Like there was nothing from 1700 til now. It's all history from. Geology to now. Thanks. Like the part re the chappel. I have been involved in an old Chapel in N San Diego county. Nice got to use my degree in history it left a great impression on me. I appreciate these guys reverance and excitement of the history. Again thanks Lucky this popped up on u tube.

I like the way this shows the clear difference between true conservationist and animal rights activist. We were left to draw out own conclusions based on facts. The activist don't know or care to learn about the reason why something is being done, it's only about the cause.

between those who do truly find out the facts and act to do just what was done on the island. We

I first came to San Nicolas in 1978. US Navy. From Pt. Mugu. The feeling I had when I stepped on the island unique and strong, The military made a big mess of the place. After all this time, I hope things have changed for the better. Good surf. Good fishing. Good abalone. I Would love to go back and clean up the beaches of all the crashed target drones. Bring all the debris back to Pt. Mugu where it came from! AG3 A. Sands . Geophysics dept. Aka the weather office.

28:04 There is an abalone pearl on the right top row shaped like a tooth. I found an abalone pearl up on the North Coast that is very similar to this one. I was cleaning a red abalone and it popped out. The mother of pearl on it is a beautiful pink and blue. I thought it might be a tooth from a sea lion or maybe an otter.

There is an American girl book about a young girl who was on the island across the sea was the mission of Santa Barbara it was a native girl who was left alone on one of the Channel Islands. My daughter and I read it together when she was about 8-10 years old she is 30 now.

Thank you to all who nurture the marvelous islands that God has gifted us with. I hope to someday be able to actually see the islands in person. I've lived in CA since about 7 years old. It was a very turbulent life. I am a senior now and still live on the CA coast. Visiting the islands is on my bucket list. Thank you for the informative, enlightening documentary

I've been diving around all of the islands off our coast, they're all unique and so interesting. I've hiked on a couple of the islands too, camped on Catalina. Went diving with the Cousteau film crew off Santa Barbara Island when they did a series about the Channel Islands. I hiked San Miguel Island with a relative of the King of San Miguel who lived on the island for a number of years along with his family.
When he sold the island to the conservatory I do not think he wanted his peole to be kicked off it. That is so sad.

I watch many expats in Portugal who are homesteading like you. Many have had the same obstacles in their path, so don't give up. It would be helpful to talk with some of them. Nick and Andrea with Project Portugal have lots of experience, and likely good advice as well. The Newbys are also in their first year, and PipsCast have just been dealing with the same issues as you.
Check in and talk to some, it may be very useful to find out how others are managing.

It's good to also read the history of the native tribes who occupied the Channel Islands originally. I saw one documentary about a tribe that believed and claimed there was proof of giants living there once.
