    FILMED IN HIGH DEFINITION
The conclusion of the Ohio River westward adventure! Mount Vernon is the last Indiana city west, along the Ohio River: a small town that couldn’t be a more perfect ending to a long journey. It provides a graceful waterfront park with huge swings, a beautiful 1800’s courthouse, Hovey Lake, the mysterious Twin Swamps, and a surreal parking lot at the end of the earth, or so it would seem. To me, the area seems more like Florida than Indiana, particularly if you visit during the summer.
Traveling to Mount Vernon, I wanted to totally get away from the big city, experience some fresh air, warm breezes and an exotic landscape: I was not disappointed. It’s a little bit of a drive, but it’s like nowhere else in Indiana, and well worth the time!

I remember seeing the old delta queen make landing at the water front at the park. The amphitheater is nice . We played a gig there at a river days fest. The amphitheater is in desperate need of shade canopy over the performance area. I think there needs to be a week end blue grass festival there.

Jeffersonville is very similar, except they have a huge, floating stage. I think it even has dressing rooms!

Lived there my whole life. Learned a thing or two. Guess I’m sheltered. Nice that you got twin swamps in there. There’s quite a bit in and about Posey county, but I guess you could say that about most every place.

I really enjoyed Mount Vernon’s quiet and beautiful skies. On the several times I visited, to capture everything, it was like a completely different world than where I live!

Excellent video. Thanks. It relaxed me. If i lived pn the Ohio river maybe I'd be relaxed all the time. I found a cabin for sale but it's on the Kentucky side. It's by Magnet. Probably have to drive along way to get across the river.

Cannelton / Hawesville or Mauckport / Brandenburg bridges are all you have for Magnet. Probably a pain in the winter!

If you watch the 30 Free Roadside Attractions video, I have much better shots of Mount Vernon. I’ve been there three times now, have always found it very peaceful. 🙂

I too live in Texas, and growing up in Mt. Vernon was very special. It was a cool place to be a kid in the 70's and I got to watch the building of both the dam and the riverport. The figures on the Soldiers and Sailors monument facing Main St were sculpted by Rudolph Schwartz who also created the figures for the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors in Indianapolis.

8:50 Great video. Graduated MVSHS ‘92. Back then you could walk out over the dams and peer into them. Hangout spot for sure. That stopped after 9/11.

Thanks! I really enjoyed the Mount Vernon area. So many travelers stop at Evansville and go no further. The one place I would’ve liked to have seen, is the inside of the coliseum and courthouse. Such great history!

@AdventureswithRoger Typical marble interiors at the courthouse. Like in Law and Order. I worked at the coliseum. Just a big basket ball gym floor with bleachers on either side. Recreation room upstairs I worked in. 1st job.

Comments like yours make my day! Thank-you! When I was a little kid, in central Indiana, the teachers would tell us about early Indiana history. Most of it happened down here, in southern Indiana. After a few school field trips / family weekend trips to the area, I was hooked! I love living and exploring down here, it really is living the dream!
It’s a pleasure to share these places and silly trivia as I learn it. It takes some time, but as long as people enjoy it, I’ll keep making them!

Was glad I caught a great skyline shot, right before heading over to the dam. If I had more time to kill, I’d either watch the sun set at Hovey, or sit on those huge swings along the downtown waterfront. Just a great place to unwind your mind. On my first trip, I met a couple at Twin Swamps, and we must’ve spoke an hour or so: one of my best memories of 2020.

@@AdventureswithRoger you caught that sunset perfectly! Hovey is a beautiful place , the dam is really cool at night time watching the barges come in. I have honestly enjoyed this series and hope that you will do another one.

My pleasure to share my favorite places! I filmed Lawrence County this last summer, putting together some really cool story segments. I enjoy editing when it’s really nasty outside, otherwise I film 12 months out of the year!

Thanks Sam! How many days to film something: it depends, really. Before I go somewhere new, I pull up a satellite image to see which way the places are facing. Anything facing east is filmed before noon, best color is around 9am or so. Places facing west are filmed in the afternoon, and those colors will get really rich after 3 pm. But,…sometimes I visit a town and find something really great, that I didn’t expect, and film it even if the lighting is bad, hoping I can fix it with the computer. If it’s a really great thing that I can’t fix, I’ll put it on the list and come back later.
Mount Vernon I did on several visits. First visit: there was a HUGE festival downtown! I left there and got evening shots at Hovey and the dam. I went back a second time, got the swamp, dam a second time, Hovey in daylight, downtown. I did some color correction and decided to head back over the next time I was at Evansville, as I didn’t like the downtown statue lighting.
A lot of Vloggers don’t care much about lighting, just capturing and describing. I’m making films that I’d like to watch when I can’t get out! 🙂 I also know that many viewers either live there or have lived there in the past, and I want them to see their towns in the best possible light. Literally!

This is a shipping business at the end of S Canal Street. If you’re at Riverbend Park’s amphitheater, that’s E Waterstreet. Take that east about a 1/4 mile and S Canal Street is your first street on the right, it dead ends at the Ohio River and a little pier. It’s private property, but I ran into it, trying to maneuver around a huge festival! 🙂 There’s a no-trespassing sign, once you’re already in the parking lot. I was only there long enough to capture the shot and get back in the car. Pretty desolate, industrial place.

North Vernon to Seymour to Scottsburg has had a heroin and meth problem, which is sad because I know many decent people in those areas.

    • @AdventureswithRoger
      @AdventureswithRoger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nah, much more Indiana to come! The Mount Vernon segment was just a conclusion of the trip west, along the Ohio River. Sorry for the confusion.
I’m working on a large New Albany segment before I move on to Lawrence County. Two weeks so far! I promised some good people, that opened the museums for me, that I’d publish in the near future, hopefully in a few days.
I actually have Lawrenceburg, Patriot, Madison, Jeffersonville and Clarksville already filmed, for the eastern section of the Ohio River. But before then, I wanted to make good on my promises to the folks in Lawrence County, that let me film their 2 museums and 1 historic theater: lots of great stuff!

Madison really is a jewel! Waterfront is awesome, you can get a speed boat tour any day of the summer. The preserved downtown is rated one of the best in the US. You can rent golf carts to tour it all, just one of the best. And then just down the road is Clifty Falls and some of the biggest waterfalls in the state.

I filmed it several years ago, before COVID hit. Seeing the people sitting around the fountain, walking along the waterfront, no masks, it was just a different world! Hope to be back to that world soon!
