Vernon, Indiana is one of only two "towns" in the State of Indiana to have a Mayor. Cities are classified differently than towns in Indiana and since Vernon became a "town" before the State of Indiana became a "State", Vernon falls under a separate classification. Vernon was founded in 1815 which was actually 2 years before Jennings County became a county! Vernon is the county seat, the smallest county seat in the state of Indiana and one of the smallest county seats in the United States with only 323 people in 2018. The entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places. The first railroad in Indiana ran from Madison to Vernon in 1841. You can also find a small tunnel at the end of Pike Street near Gains Street that is the first elevated railroad overpass/tunnel west of the Alleghenies. The first all woman jury in the state was here in Vernon in 1921 and is believed to be the second all woman jury in the United States. The first public playground in the State of Indiana is also located in Vernon.

The Crosley monster is just my shirtless uncle checking his trail cams.
Apparently quite a few people have seen him! LOL!
Wow! At the town's cemetery: Wilbur Shaw & Pat O'Conner. Famous retired race driver, A.J. Foyt, Jr. rates high O'Conner for helping A.J. get into Indy's famous I.M.S.
Good info about another quaint town of the great state of Indiana. Worth seeing. I love the small towns.
Lot's of great little towns in Indiana.
Outstanding video of a local, small town with deep Indiana history!
Glad you liked it!
My step dad liked going to that town. We went up there a couple times for a street festival, it was called Pioneer Days.
They still have that festival.
Very well done!!!
Thanks, I appreciate that.

Well done, you covered alot I didnt know myself, and I live in the county
Good! Glad to hear that! :)
nicely done!
Thanks!
Nice video. But didn't hear anything about Pres. Nixon's visit in 1971 to honor his mother who was born here. Also didn't hear anything about the major movie, "Friendly Persuasion," that was set in rural Jennings County during the Civil War days.
We mention Nixon's visit in the video we did on the courthouse: th-cam.com/video/Qw0Vlp-aEFQ/w-d-xo.html
Nice video!
Thanks!
I was wondering about Bloody Marys grave too🙂
It's just an old Folks tale. Every town has a Bloody Mary tale
My dad was born in Vernon in 1922

Sorry Mayor, say what you want, this magnificent structure was not built by pioneers in 1831. No Way!
I live in Vernon and yes it was
use real people to pan the video walking on the street . not a car driving 25mph with a dash cam?
.. u couldn't see any of those old beautiful buildings just the street.. drone shots are ok .. but let see ground level in the oldest part of the town area next time..
Any Kosher deli's or synagogues in Vernon?
Nope. Go to Columbus.
why do you ask?
