  • From a company that has brought the guitar world so many great originals, the Hummingbird stands out strong and proud. Introduced in 1960 as Gibson’s first square-shouldered dreadnought, the Hummingbird arrived at the dawn of a new era in music. And has continued to shake the music scene, arriving in this new honey burst finish, Chris McKee goes over specs and history of this highly acclaimed acoustic guitar from Gibson. Thanks for watching!

    Chris, I am buying a Gibson acoustic electric guitar soon, probably for my Christmas present. I'm looking at a J-15, or J-45. Maybe a Humingbird. My question is I need a acoustic guitar that doesn't sound so twangy. I have a Martin OME Cherry and I love this guitar but plugged in too twangy. Unplugged sounds great. I have some others and a 12 string. Can you tell me which sounds best amped. Most of my playing other than church is on my Boss 900cd studio. I've never bought you guys but if you help me out I just might. I live in Arkansas. Which is why I've neveer bought from you guys,

      Both great guitars. If you have smaller hands the hummingbird might be the better option, since it’s shorter scale length lowers the tension on the strings. Consequently it’s a quieter guitar. If you have bigger hands or need a louder sound, then the dove is for you due to it’s longer scale length.

    Go ORU! Hey do the Gibson acoustics stay in tune any better than their electric guitars do? Do Martin's stay in tune better than Gibson acoustics?

    • @oneeyedlittleman
      @oneeyedlittleman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the problems inherent to the design of the gibson headstock remain when moving to their acoustics. The geometry is pretty similar to martin's, so I would venture to say that the tuning issues are about the same as long as you're comparing a $4000 martin to the bird. My 18 standard bird goes a few days between tunes and I'm always playing it. one key advantage to martin and taylor's approach is that the string angle is lower so there is less of a chance of finding your guitar and headstock in different rooms. A dove or an SJ200 would likely fix that due to their maple necks, however

      Not a fair comparison between Hummingbird and HD 28 , hummingbird is mahogany back and sides and the HD28 is rosewood back and sides . Completely different sounds . I owned both these guitars and while I loved them both they both ended up sitting in there cases all the time after I bought a Martin 000-28EC . So I sold them off . I am missing the dread style though after not having one for a few years so am on the hunt for a mahogany one so either Hummingbird or D18 .

      Ridiculous statement. I've owned 3 Gibsons and sold 2 of them cause they were VERY VERY average sounding guitars , and didn't buy a 3rd one made in the 70s cause it sounded so crap. I can afford whatever guitar I want and I can tell you, there's a LOT of Gibsons I don't want purely due to their very average sound quality. I also own a Gibson Songwriter deluxe standard that is great for stage work. Best pickup sound i have ever heard on an acoustic guitar and is my primary stage instrument, but acoustically i has very low volume compared with other dreadnoughts and it has a shrillness in it's higher strings.

    I'm disappointed with the color. There's nothing heritage cherryburst about the finish on these cherryburst models. More accurately they should name the finish heritage orangeburst since all you see is orange, not cherry. Another lovely Gibson screwup. Thank goodness for Martin and Taylor acoustics.

    • @DLcine
      @DLcine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The end of your post was enough to understand what kind of fanboy you are ; besides neither Martin nor Taylor propose burst that compete with Gibsons. Would have been better to get the point of view of a guitar player, which obviously you aint, but its alright keep focusing on looks & colours. For your knowledge, Heritage for Gibson means Faded, it refers to older models cherry sunburst fading over the years. Means you cannot expect flashy red. There is however models that come close to it or you can probably ask Gibson for a custom, or look at "tea burst" models for example.

      An old comment; but yes, he got it wrong. You can google what the HCB looks like quite easily. This is a honey tint.

    I didn't hear him mention the thick rubber glued on Chinese imported pick guards that peel off on every single guitar, or the horrific run out stained tops that look like they have been lying in the rain. The video shows a clean top...trust me...those nice Gibson tops are few and far between. I bought one and within six months the pick guard lifted and peeled off. And the top lools like something from the wall of an outhouse. Junk. And all for only $4000! I don't see a line forming on these. Sell them and get less than half what you paid because nobody wants them. Quality is zero at Gibson, and that is known world wide.
