    With the strawberries, it could be both. I grow a couple of white varieties. Mainly for two reasons, one the birds don't know they are ripe, and two the kids don't know they are ripe lol

    Did you know that you can use part of a growing cucumber without it spoiling the growing fruit. I've done it, I took about a 4" piece off a growing one, it was more than enough for me. The over then next few hours the remaining cuc on the plant covered the cut with a callus and continued to grow. No wastage and no loss... neat trick eh?

      Years ago I worked in a supermarket and once a customer in the produce section was quite cross with me at the state of the broccoli. (I didn't even work in produce I just happened to be walking through it at the time, lol.) She was unhappy that we charged by weight when we purposefully left such a large amount of stem on the broccoli, because it was just going in the bin and was a waste of money. As someone who always uses the stem, I happily told her about how good it is in stir-fries and on pizza, but she wasn't having it. If I hadn't been in uniform maybe she would've been more open to the idea; I suspect she assumed I was making excuses or something.
      Also let me just throw this here for anyone who read this: if you have leftover broccoli stem and / or cauliflower stem, they keep a lot longer than the whole floret, and a great side-dish is the stems sliced into disks no bigger than half a centimetre thick, half sauteed half steamed in a tiiiny bit of oil (low to medium heat with the lid on), you can add some onion in there first, then finish it off with some oyster sauce. Delicious, easy, great side to have sitting in the fridge to jazz up some basic veggie meals.

    • @Liliarthan
      @Liliarthan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! Our favourite part of the broccoli to stir fry with is actually the leaves. You get so many meals out of one plant, not just the flowers. The other night my partner harvested a bunch of leaves for dinner and no flower heads (well this was broccolini type), he forgot coz we eat the leaves so often! Even my 2 and 5yos ate them and they NEVER eat veges, not even peas or tomatoes.

    • @Liliarthan
      @Liliarthan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      P.s. our stir fry recipe is:
      - heat oil in pan (any except olive)
      - Chuck in washed and chopped leaves (or any stir fry veges), let it cook a tiny bit till they start to go a darker green
      - add crushed garlic, dash of fish sauce, dash of soy sauce, season with salt or MSG and at least a teaspoon of sugar 😉
      - stir in a drizzle of sesame oil
      - sprinkle some sesame seeds or sunflower seeds over top if you're feeling fancy
      Done!
      (Dash = a technical measuring unit that's more than a pinch but less than a dollop. 😆 You gotta experiment with that one.)
      It never fails me. Tastes amazing when stirfrying beans. Keep them crispy. It'll be a new favourite.

    My biggest tip is knowing when too late to harvest is. Whether it's radish, carrot, eggplant, cucumber, squash green beans etc, it's better to harvest small and ensure a good tasting crop. Waiting for it to get bigger only degrades quality. Knowing your varieties and days to harvest helps. Tomatoes and peppers are also easy to overripen on the plant. Tomatoes especially. My tip is harvest when beginning to ripen and finish ripening inside. This will help ensure insects, birds etc, and splitting doesn't ruin it always such a shame! I like the video and to be honest it is more of a challenge to get right than it seems it would be. We live in Texas and the heat can mess up production quick!

    Had a family member who had an avocado orchard. His tip for ripening the fruit is to pop the dry end of the stem totally off of the avocado. By doing this the fruit will ripen in a day or two at room temp, or a few days in the refrigerator. Works 100% of the time.

      @lizatrue7543 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@postmortemspasm ~ After you cut the fruit from the tree the remaining piece of stem on the fruit will dry up pretty quickly. Once dry just pop the remaining bit of stem off of the fruit and then it will ripen fast.

    I also find particularly with mangoes and pineapples, etc that the aroma is also a good indicator of ripeness, they just smell good enough to eat. With avocados I also have to do a couple of test picks, but with my varieties, the skin goes from shiny to dull, giving an indication that they're nearly ready.

And lots of new compost and soil. I learn a lot from you bud thanks for that. Question…Any idea why I didn’t get any pumpkins? Lots of vines and yellow flowers but no fruit set. If you put a cage under their roost the poop falls in and they can’t trample it into dust. I went further in my next coop and built a step under the coop with 10mm weld mesh which could then be shoveled out from outside the coop......worked a treat. Love the channel and the dad jokes!

    Wow - Perhaps that is why my last batch of sauerkraut made from my own home grown cabbages, was too tough. I might have harvested them when they were too dry/in the middle of the day. Next time I'm going to follow your advice and see what happens. Thanks heaps!

    I’m binging all these videos. I’ve had a raised garden bed for a few months and I have run into some issues so I am excited to learn how to garden more successfully and hopefully get a larger garden going once I practice a bit :)

    Mark…. Have you ever tried putting epsom salt around the trees and veg? It helps with bugs and makes them sweeter…. You should be able to order or get garden epsom salt to use…. I’ve used it on my watermelon patches works great…. Cause like you I don’t use pesticides…. Just a thought…. From USA south georgia

    Gday Mark! Looks like you moving right along! I have 4 beds of carrots now about 3 inches tall! Will be covering with plastic when it gets cold. Hope to get loads if carrots come spring ! Funny thing, I have little tomato seedlings all over. I'm going to leave some of them to see how they fare under plastic this winter.

    Your videos are so helpful. Still browsing through them all. Any suggestions for growing and edible weed garden? My area has lots of varieties that I've recently learned are quite healthy.

    Hi Mark, I also live Brisbane Northside and seem to struggle growing cucumbers, cucamelons. They take off fine, then when they get to flowering stage, they start to die.

    carrots, you can store in a plastic freezer bag, and add a little water in. Just to keep them nice and moist.
