Kevin - would love to buy some sugar cane mulch from your shop. The south grows a ton but no one seems to sell it as a mulching product. I'm always jealous watching Mark spread his mulch out!

@@yewsengcheong1637 It was a cane toad. An introduced species that is wreaking havoc in Queensland and now into the lower eastern states of australia. There is a bounty on them and in most places you collect them in chaff bags and hand them in to be disposed of humanely.

@@adamwest1138 - that'd be a shame! I value them as they're amazing for controlling lawn pests, like lawn grub moths, lawn beetles, etc.
They might have been introduced, but wildlife has adapted, and they're finally finding their niche.
Everything has it's place here, I find. Even cane toads! :D

This is the work we should be doing, supporting our own dream and not someone else's. Congrats for living your dream Mark, I'm all for being elbow deep in poop!!
Been gardening for the last 15 years or so, and one of the things that I've learnt that's changing how I garden completely.
If you don't dig or till soil, and you regularly add a few centimeters of grass, leaves, compost and/or manure. Well, my plants have had like 20-30% yield increase without replacing soil, even though it's been almost 7 years since I decided to start this. The soil is healthier because the mycelium isn't disrupted, and apparently the plants like it. They grow bigger, faster, and with more stuff to harvest each year. Just last year alone, I had 7 large tomato plants, I got nearly 200 pounds off them. I was eating them for months. It's getting better each year. Just top dress 2-3 times a year.
I feel like I can always tell just by digging around in it with my bare hands and giving it a little bit of a whiff. You can really smell the pungent earthiness of healthy, happy soil. Once you’ve handled enough healthy soil it’s very easy to tell just by feel.

The Living Soil Food Web will have billions of beneficial microbes which will continually build the soil and destroy harmful pathogens that may be present in the soil. As you said, "Once you’ve handled enough healthy soil it’s very easy to tell just by feel." Getting your hands into the soil is good for both you and the soil.

This was perfect for me! Last year my beds grew fine, then the growth stopped. I thought it was the hot temps, but I'm sure now it was also lack of nutrients. My soil is old and looks just like the poor soil that you showed. Thanks SO much for your help, looking forward to updating my beds and growing lots of veg!!

Finally I found a video that explains what to look out to determine when your garden bed needs replenishing. For a while I suspected this was the case judging by the health of my plants. I liked how he explains the middle ground where the soil hasn't reached that optimal condition (which mine is) and what to do. Thanks very helpful. I now feel better about what steps to take.

@@MrJoshcc600 You Bet. Started growing sweet potatoes since we can do that year round here. Just finished turning over the bed based on his Sweet Potato video. I have a whole 8x4 bed dedicated to them.
@@MrJoshcc600 I’m near your area too. And have always gardened. Had my own greenhouse in Michigan & 10 acres. But the sun, heat and dirt in FL is a whole nother ballgame to learn. Just made some 8x4 raised beds. Hugelkulter. I think they will be great for down here. Getting em’ ready. Have a few things going now. But Sept-March is really our best growing season in FL I think. I am soooo very happy that I discovered your channel. Especially, because I live in the Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa. Our climate in the Karoo is actually defined as a desert climate and obviously we are in the Southern Hemisphere. So watching this, just takes away some of the extra thinking and calculating that comes with e.g. looking at British garden shows. It's just really not nearly parallel. Nor is Australia, but there are definitely more in common.
Hi Janine, try some gardeners based in Southern California if you can, it's also very dry climate and might suit you! I'm in Brisbane and I often watch stuff from Florida for the same reason :)

I love my bunnies. They make lots of wonderful fertilizer for my gardens. I add in to every hole I plant my veggies in and mix it in to all the areas I seed. Then I water my gardens with rabbit poo tea by adding a couple shovels full of loo to a large tote then fill it with water after sitting for 2 days I water each of my plants.
Thanks for the video. I've already started my seedlings for this year, but since I don't have a garden, I guess I gotta beautify my neighborhood with some veggie and flower containers 😊
I live in a apartment building, i use rectangular garden pots to grow basil, oregano, chives and recently cherry tomato, plus im making a mini compost. Just look for a good sunny spot in your house and use a small table for a better access to place your pots and seedbed.

With the locked away knowledge I had from growing up on a farm, (that i had almost forgot) and your knowledge from the other side of the planet reminded me that we need to love our dirt more. Without happy soils, we have nothing people.

If you're resting a bed you can plant something like Vetch into it and the dig that into the soil when its done to not only stop other weeds getting in but feed the soil.

Have you ever tried that thing where you dig a massive deep trench (usually about as high as yourself if you can) and then build an arched roof over the top in plastic and seal it all in to create a greenhouse effect? The depth of the hole helps to hide away from the cold a bit, and the plastic on top (you'd need to put it on a strong wire/steel frame) lets light and warmth in and traps it there.
Then you might be able to grow some stuff down there at the bottom!
Have a look online about such things. Not sure if it'd be enough in your sort of cold climate or not.
I'm really not familiar with minus temps, so I can't say for sure.
@@TheMurlocKeeper There is too much rain here in Norway and it would turn in to a swimming pit real fast. And there are too much snow in winter it would be a cold cellar and no heat in it.
I'm 23 and live in a city downtown rn, so my gardening is limited to the containers I can fit on the bannister outside my door. my goal is to get a house in the suburbs when my partner and i eventually get married, and do some raised bed urban gardening! You and epic gardening have inspired me so I'm growing my first tomato crop this year! Just planted my first box with tomato, basil, borage, and calendula :)

I am jealous. I have 2-4 feet of snow outside (the drifts are deeper in places). My brother "shoveled" my walkway with his tractor. I did walk out to my garden today and my garlic is peaking through the snow.

I have seen very few frogs, toads, no horny toad, no red ants, no crawdads recently.
When I was a kid in the late 60's, we saw them all the time.
But grow a garden and all kinds of destructive bugs come out.
So much for pesticides everyone around me must be using.
I HATE cane toads. Disgusting things. Yes, they’re a pest species here. It rained yesterday and I can hear them outside. A little detail in the accumulated water kills the tadpoles....

The natural soil here is red clay and rocks. Lots of rocks. A joke from a friend goes, "Q. What do they call 1/2 inch gravel in Missouri?" "A. topsoil." Rocks are the main crop here is Missouri. I keep buckets in my garden for collecting said rocks. And I try to amend the soil here a lot.

Thanks for another very informative video Mark. Just a word of warning when adding large volumes of soil/compost/manure to your garden beds. I bought a load of mushroom compost before summer (thinking I was helping my garden beds) and it was severely alkaline. Everything I tried to grow over summer was a failure. Wasn't until I tested the soil with a PH test kit that I discovered the issue. I ended up adding a heap of agricultural sulphur to fix the PH balance. Lesson learnt.
Howdyyawl from the land down under. Good soil is like a good wine, just like wine, you can taste the soil. If the soil tastes bitter or sour, it needs some help. I also use peg magic, a nail or wooden peg on a length of cotton or wool. Hold it over the soil. If it sits still, soil is dead, swing back & forward, its neutral, needs fertilizing. If swings in a right circle, it is positive. Gove it a go. See what you think😊

My Mom used to put a foot of leaves on her garden every fall. And she had a "compost pile" sitting on a sheet of chicken wire. The compost pile never heated up but it did attract lots of worms (and an opossum). So in the spring we planted tomatoes and pepper plants surrounded by leaves, with handfuls of worm droppings from under the chicken wire. We had no idea what we were doing but we did grow wonderful tomatoes.

Those wing beans @12:07-12:14 are the best plant to have in the garden. Every part of that plant can be eaten. The saying is “you will never go hungry if you have that plant growing in your garden”. You can make them yourself, easier if you make them with right angles (no curves). Just use corrugated roofing sheets.
