What do you love about Greek Mythology?

Well, I got this video in my suggestion, which is pretty much amazing timing : I'm finishing my thesis on Greek and Roman mythology in children's literature, and was inspired to do so when I realized so many retellings were being released

The Greek & Roman “classic” stories, philosophies & laws shaped a lot of our current western culture. I believe these retellings are so popular because we are rewriting our culture from the beginning- breaking down the flaws of the heroes instead of pretending they’re perfect, and making the women and slaves real, complete people with valuable roles to play. Maybe by making the stories we tell ourselves about classic cultures more balanced & real we can eventually offer the same to our own societies.

"Our" culture? Western culture is indeed deeply in debt to Greek and Roman influences but these stories are fundamentally still Greek and Italian heritage.

I took every mythology course that was at my college, it was so many credits it pretty much is a minor now. love mythology - I love Celtic mythology more than Greek but love it all.

I so wish my college or school had courses like that because I would have done exactly the same! I need to read some more Celtic stuff. Do you have any recs? I loved The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless

@@GinaLuciaReads not really I've stuck to mostly with straight myths and no retellings. Sadly Celtic mythology is sorely lacking in the retelling department

@@gidgetgrlreading9603 it is, I agree! I'll have to keep an eye out and focus on the original mythology first

@@GinaLuciaReads I read that Witches of Ash and Ruin is good and blends witches with celtic mythology. So I'm going to check that out. Not sure what 'retelling" but maybe

I think it is a mix of humanization of gods and as the name suggests their stories, when we do think of gods we think of a picture more aloof, perfect more often than not. (let's not think about gods like Zeus for now) It's rather fun to read about gods and their complexities even if it's something like emotion another point to note is that people want to know about their lives, and the humanization of them makes it even better, they often look at other characters or gods who were often overlooked or not deemed that important, giving us a different point of view, of course, I am no expert at this topic, I don't usually read greek mythology or mythology for that matter, but they are always fun to experience! I am glad this genre is becoming more popular, it is honestly one everyone should read at least one book from.

Yes I totally agree. The humanisation is absolutely there. It's one of the reasons why I tend to like Greek Myth over Norse. Because the Greek Gods seem a lot more human than Norse ones. But perhaps I need to read more Norse Mythology.
