    Man of Steel is a 2013 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. It is a British-American venture[ produced by DC Entertainment, Legendary Pictures and Syncopy, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is the first installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Zack Snyder, written by David S. Goyer, and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni and Russell Crowe. Man of Steel is a reboot of the Superman film series that portrays the character's origin story. In the film, Clark Kent learns that he is a superpowered alien from the planet Krypton. He assumes the role of mankind's protector as Superman, making the choice to face General Zod and prevent him from destroying humanity.
    Development began in 2008, when Warner Bros. took pitches from comic book writers, screenwriters, and directors, opting to reboot the franchise. In 2009, a court ruling resulted in Jerry Siegel's family recapturing the rights to Superman's origins and Siegel's copyright. The decision stated that Warner Bros. did not owe the families additional royalties from previous films, but if they did not begin production on a Superman film by 2011, then the Shuster and Siegel estates would be able to sue for lost revenue on an unproduced film. Producer Christopher Nolan pitched Goyer's idea after story discussion on The Dark Knight Rises, and Snyder was hired as the film's director in October 2010. Principal photography began in August 2011 in West Chicago, Illinois, before moving to Vancouver and Plano, Illinois.
    Man of Steel was released in theaters on June 14, 2013, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film became a box office success, grossing more than $668 million worldwide. Critics praised the film's visuals and Hans Zimmer's score but criticized its pacing and lack of character development. A follow-up entitled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released on March 25, 2016.
    With Krypton destabilized from the mining of the planet's core, Jor-El, chief advisor to Krypton's supreme council, recommends that the council give him control of the genetics codex. Before any action can be taken, soldiers led by General Zod, an old friend of El's, launch an uprising and arrest the councilors. Realizing that Krypton is doomed, El steals the genetic codex sought by Zod and infuses them into the DNA of his infant son, Kal-El, the first naturally born Kryptonian child in centuries. Donning his old armor, El sacrifices his life to allow his son to escape on a preprogrammed spacecraft. The council quashes Zod's rebellion, and its members are sentenced to exile in the Phantom Zone after being convicted of treason. Krypton explodes soon after.
    Following El's coordinates, the ship crash lands on Earth in Smallville, Kansas. A childless couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent, find Kal-El and raise him as their own, naming him Clark. Clark eventually becomes an isolated young man as a result of developing superhuman powers which he tries to hide from others. He then learns his true origins from Jonathan, who urges him to keep his powers hidden. Several years later, Jonathan dies in a tornado while refusing to let Clark rescue him. Burdened with guilt and looking for a new purpose in his life, Clark leaves to travel the world for an extended period of time under several disguises.
    Several months later, Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane receives an assignment to investigate the discovery of a Kryptonian scout ship in the Canadian Arctic. Disguised as a worker, Clark enters the ship and activates its central computer using a key left by Jor-El, which allows him to communicate with an artificial intelligence modeled after his father. The AI explains that Clark was sent to Earth to guide its people, and presents him with a Kryptonian uniform bearing his family's symbol. While following Clark, Lois inadvertently triggers the ship's security system. Clark uses his powers to rescue Lois before wearing the uniform and testing his flying abilities. Unable to convince supervisor Perry White to publish an article on the incident, Lois tracks down Clark in Smallville, with the intent of exposing him. However, after hearing of Jonathan Kent's sacrifice, Lois drops the story, keeping Clark's identity safe, despite Perry's suspicions.

    Man of Steel wasn't dark the circumstances were. Superman was the beacon of hope that pierced through the darkness.

    • @alestrius
      @alestrius 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The thing is, though, that those circumstances were decided upon by the people making the movie. They could have chosen to not write Superman into a corner where he had to either kill Zod or save the human race, but they decided that darker end was the one they wanted to go for. They could have manipulated the circumstances so he COULD save more people than he ended up doing. But they didn't want to go in that direction. Man of Steel is not, nor was it inspired by, a real-life story; there's no reason they *had* to pick the darker circumstances for their Superman story. But they did.
      And that's the problem I have, and the reason I disliked MoS.
      I don't claim to be a comic book fan; I've read very few in fact, and it's usually after I've seen a movie (or when one's coming up) that I read any particular run, if I do at all. Most of my DC knowledge comes the animated shows, and in that regard, MoS is far from the Superman I know and love. I realize part of the difference is medium, but that's not it entirely. I hate to be the guy to bring up Marvel vs. DC, but they're the two big superhero movie makers right now. I'm not saying either approach is correct vs. incorrect in my comparison, but rather, using them to contrast each other to explain what I mean.
      In (most -- Age of Ultron being a notable example) Marvel movies, the ending saves the day. The vast, vast majority of characters established are saved, if not almost all relevant (and especially all named characters, with maybe 1-2 exceptions depending on how 'important' the movie is to the cinematic universe) characters end up saved, and in general, there aren't a ton of big, huge sacrifices. The hero is placed in a narrative framework where, more often than not, they can save those important to them.
      Man of Steel doesn't do that. Does Superman act with hope present as a theme in MoS as best he can given the circumstances? Yes. But are those circumstances bright and hope-inspiring as the Superman I'm used to generally is? No, no they are not. Superman was the beacon of hope that pierced through the darkness, but I personally enjoy him more as the beacon of hope leading a decent today into an even better tomorrow. MoS just had me closing the browser tab feeling miserable, and while that's a great fit for Batman, it wasn't what I personally wanted out of Superman.

      @LightHero117 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Exactly. I understand that Man of Steel wasn't exactly everyone's cup of tea for trying to apply realism and logical consequences to a character that has long represented escapism and fantastic storytelling, but I think Man of Steel is a great movie because it gets viewers to challenge their own preconceptions about Superman and the world he lives in. It asks the hard questions about Superman, namely what is so iconic about this character and what do we, as viewers, love about him. Sometimes legends have to be torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up so that people can understand why are they legends in the first place and that a symbol is only as good as the man wearing it.

It makes for an interesting take on what is otherwise considered a boring character due to him almost facing no challenge. The action in MOS is specifically designed to to keep Supes on his toes, to be fast and intense and showcase real stakes and weight. The situation is SUPPOSED to be dire. It's not designed to be light and frothy like a Marvel action film. The filmmakers wanted the action to feel dangerous, powerful and intense...like what a fight between two superpowered aliens could conceivably look like.
    This notion that Supes himself destroys Metropolis is absurd. For one, like 99% of the damage done to the city was before Supes even got there.
    For two, once the Zod fight begins, Supes is losing the ENTIRE time. The only observable damage Supes himself does is wreck some building windows and edifices. That's it. Not ONE building falls because of Superman. Not. One.
    The rest is ALL Zod. Supes DOES try and take Zod away into space. Zod brings them RIGHT BACK DOWN TO METROPOLIS.
    Zod says it clear as day....he won't stop until Earth is destroyed.
    The fact SO. MANY. PEOPLE. flat out misinterpret this film so blantantly is beyond ridiculous to me.

      It's because noobs to the superhero scene all like Marvel, so they have this idea that they HAVE to hate DC no matter what... all because of this massive misconception that there's a huge rivalry between the companies and their fans, which couldn't be further from the truth... they work together all the time and most comic readers like both. But these movie noobs don't get that, and will literally invent excuses to hate on DC movies.

      Dude I agree. Movie was great. BVS was fine as a sequel if they didn't put three plots in it. The death of Superman, Dark Knight Returns, and are super heroes responsible for their collateral damage. Death of Superman was done too early. As they all do they could have adapted a newer version of Dark Knight Returns where they beefed at first then went on to confront Luthor as president who already had a few villains under his belt. I don't know but you get me. It was WAAAAAY too much going on plot wise. Critics destroyed this movie and they were right. He finally admitted to me a few months ago that he HAD NEVER EVEN SEEN THE FILM. He refused to watch it because of all of negatives he had heard. I convinced him to watch it and he ended up really liking it and even said something along the lines of "I don't get why people complained Zod's death. Instead of BvS, WB should have let Snyder do a "World's Finest" movie. Put Superman up against Metallo, secretly created by Lex. Batman is investigating Luthor. They should have met, and then used the classic scene where Supes uses X-Ray vision to look under the Cowl to find Bruce Wayne, then Batman plants a bug on Superman's cape, and follows him to find out that he's Clark Kent.
      They reluctantly agree to work together. Batman needs Superman's brawn while Superman needs Batman's detective skills and invulnerability to Kryptonite. Luthor hides his tracks and stays as the mastermind behind the scenes even though B & S suspect him. In the end, B & S have mutual respect that begins developing as a friendship.

      @clit_niblr036 It isn't a bad movie per say. I liked it but it did not represent superman as a character. And no matter all the deep meanings they tried to pretend it has the movie was kinda depressing about a hero who is supposed to be the symbol of hope. But as someone in a honest trailer in youtube said more or less 'you can write all the essays you want pretending this was smart but dumb is a one syllable word that covers it pretty well'.

    I liked the fact he is vulnerable emotionally in this movie. Superman needs to evolve Into that man with the perfect moral compass and always knows the best solution. He might be a alien but emotionally he 100 percent human and just like anyone he needs to grow. As time goes on he will be more and more of the Superman we grew up with. But in this movie he is just like any young adult. Lost and unsure of his place in the world

      That was the goal of the movie, he is a human in nature. He needed to find his place in the world. He wasn't specifically bred to be something like the other Kryptonians, he was a natural birth. Jor-El says it himself: Kal would be free to forge his own destiny. the forty minutes between the Krypton scenes and the plot kicking in are Clark learning who he is as his role wasn't predetermined aka the heroes journey.

I'll always have a place in my heart for Christopher Reeve's Superman, the two dimensional super-powered boy scout who could keep the west coast from falling into the ocean, but also wasn't above saving a cat stuck in a tree. It was unapologetic bubble gum fun. But I really enjoyed the fact that MoS showed the struggle of an alien boy growing into a man who wasn't magically perfect in every way from birth - he is relatable. And when he grows into Superman, a beacon of hope, it's all the more resonant because we know what he went through to achieve it.

      In the context of the modern super hero film as a part of a larger interconnecting universe leading to a climax, the man of steel fits in quite well. The Reeves films and smallville fit into their own separate universe, which again is not bad or good, but a creative choice to develop the character along a particular line. I've always wanted to see a Superman that was heads and tails above his quote fellow heroes and was potentially frightening if he went rogue. A God above other God's, that triggered a similar fear in the other heroes, that it did with Man from the discrepancy of the power levels. That's personally why I like the Cavill characterization. I liked Reeves and I also like Tom Welling's interpretation's for different reasons.

    On top of this detailed analysis I would add the fact that the neck-snap was not Superman's idea, and not his fault. Zod had made it clear that he was over the idea of living. He had lost his entire sense of purpose. For some time he claimed his new purpose was to make Kal-El (Superman) pay for stopping Zod's plans... but at that final moment where Superman pleaded for Zod to surrender, the answer was "Never!". Zod wanted to die and he forced Kal-El to make it happen.

    Thank you for speaking my mind. I think Man of Steel is the best Superman movie, period. Snyder gave us the most realistic version of Superman. He had to test his limits and learn how to free himself from the laws of physics to become Superman. Unlike Superman II, Zod was a real threat to the human race, and had no remorse in whipping out the whole planet for the sake of Krypton. Those who think this movie sucked need to watch the movie again with sincerity. One last thing to note, the Man of Steel soundtrack was Zimmer's masterpiece...PERIOD!!! A big thank you to Snyder & Zimmer!!

      No, even the Ultimate Edition doesn't fix the core plot problems of the film. Batman's blind hatred of Superman, who had clearly saved the world by risking himself while destroying his own people, just doesn't make sense. Since the events of MoS, Superman had been doing nothing but good until the staged compound where Supes had to rescue Lois -- it would have made more sense for Batman to INVESTIGATE that scene than assume that Supes was guilty.
      Most of all, the idea that Batman would be shaken out of his blind rage by the mention of his mother was ridiculous. I understand that Snyder used that scene to show that Batman suddenly realized that Superman was a real person and not just an alien menace, but it was poorly done. I disliked this whiney version of Lex Luthor, who was clearly insane. The idea that this guy was able to master Kryptonian tech so fast is ridiculous. And Doomsday was used WAY too soon.
      There are some great parts of BvS -- Batman's rescue of Martha is the best single Batman fight scene ever shown. Wonder Woman's introduction was excellent. Overall, I liked the film -- but it could have been SOOO much better.

      @@wrestlinganime4life288 The core idea of getting to a cinematic universe differently than Marvel was a good one: Superman, then re-introduce Batman teamed with Superman, then go straight into a Justice League movie as a way to introduce the other JL members, then have individual movies, then back to JL2 -- could have worked with better execution, but the execution failed with BvS.
      BvS should have used Metallo or Parasite as the villain. Doomsday and Death of Superman was too soon. Instead of Steppenwolf, the villain in JL should have been Brainiac -- he would have been a big enough threat to justify the JL forming.
