Building the Best Damn GMC Motorhome Ever E.10 - Rivnuts and Removing The Ancient Roof AC

  • The Roof AC on the coach is original from 1978! It doesn't blow cold anymore, and it is about twice as tall as modern units, so it has to get gone. Also, let's finish up some of the trim and waterproofing.

    you're probably going to end up re-adding an air conditioner, but you can easily add a mini-split in later. there's even 12v and 24v inverter models designed for RV or coach usage. the main benefit of an AC imo is the dehumidification, not the air cooling capacity. I can sleep in 85 degree heat if the %RH is low... not so much if it's 80%+ RH.

      Yup the area of a GMC is basically a confined space. The occupants generate humidity.

    Progress is great! Like the idea of removing the AC in almost 100F, can't see any downsides there! 🤣

    I agree on the removal of the roof rail. It takes up room and doesn't work as a safety device. More likely to catch your ankle and make you hit the ground head first instead of feet first.

    You are doing some very good work. Some of which I have already done. I have used the blind rivets and they are tough to get to pop. I even ruined a rivet gun in the process. I had some discussions with some friends about having an AC when you are camping. If you are going to a place where you nee AC...maybe you should look for a nicer place to camp. I was surprised you did not put the aluminum patch on the inside and cover the top with body filler...maybe that is too big of any area....I know nothing about such things but I see you are skilled at doing body work. 1 last thing. Wurth Bond and Seal is an excellent sealer that I believe is easier to use than butyl tape. Just my experience. I used it under place I have penetration through the body. Again...you are doing an excellent job. Looking forward to see your progress.

  • @DaleKlein
    @DaleKlein 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That butyl tape may seal at first, but... It drys out and doesn't stay sealed, it's not very adhesive. It will be soft enough to compress with vibration and thermal movement, but doesn't stay sticky enough to stay sealed when the gap expands. There's a boat bedding tape that works good, called Bed It. There's a stick and tin camper corner sealing tape that is similar but with fleece on one side, Seal-Tite from dicor. That could be the best to put behind a seam trim strip. Crazy adhesive, flexible, and seals any attachment screws going through it. But the trim is still removable because the fleece keeps the trim from sticking.

    Could you fab some lengthwise lap strips to put over the top seam of the plate and seal only the top seam of these. Then they could slide over plates as the vehicle shifts. Water would flow over and off .

    Think twice about the luggage rack. The fatal flaw of these motor homes was a lack of storage space. They have no "basement" storage.

    • @do.it.better
      @do.it.better 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I removed the rack but kept the ladder. The luggage rack, IMHO does really hold anything in place. I’ve talked to others and we believe it is more decoration than actual purpose. I have had 2 friends who also have removed the storage pods you mostly store things on top that you don’t need. Instead, remove the generator and propane tank. Put in a 20lb propane tank you will gain more storage and you will be just fine.

    I ran across this while researching Skoolie conversions. It's a sealant that keeps the roof and subsequently the interior much cooler than a roof/interior would be without it (about a 30 degree difference).

  • @albertcassler8763

    sorry to say, but your doing it all wrong.
    take the drip rail off and start again using windshield rubber sealant to fill in the gap between the roof and side. then if you want to you can get some neoprene, a bit thicker than the drip rail and glue it to the drip rail. the windshield rubber sealant will keep rain water out. the drip rail is just a cover. but because they had to allow flexibility for both top and side and that's why the gap is there.
    the urithan windshield rubber sealant will be good for another 30 years at least.
    and save yourself some greif by not using silicon rubber sealant, it's extra work to get off.
    3M makes a good windshield rubber sealant and is cheaper than whatever else you can get. clean up with laquer thinner on a rag, wipe excess immediately to dry
    and replace those screws with stainless steel screws...put some anti seize on the thread before tightening.
    your welcome

    I hate to say this, but Dicor sucks and it will eventually crack and fail. I typically stay away from anything advertised as "RV". If you want sealant products that last, you have to look at what professionals use when constructing buildings. M1 urethane is the perfect flexible sealant that is paintable. It's also supposed to last 30 years plus. About $11 per tube when you buy it online.

      Didn't want the gas from inside the unit to escape if it broke, so I was extra careful: "Not only does Freon itself harm the ozone layer, but the manufacturing of Freon releases another product into the atmosphere. This gas, called HFC-23, is also harmful and contributes to global warming. Although Freon is highly restricted and regulated in its use, older appliances still use and release this harmful gas."

  • @seawaatty
    @seawaatty 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I caution you to think twice about permanently sealing the hole where your air conditioner came out of. Install a vent instead. The reasons being #1 future owners will pay you less for the motorhome when you get ready to sell it. Due to global warming people want air conditioning. You are also limiting the geographic area that you can use your motorhome in. A year from now you may decide that you want to take a trip to Arizona or Texas in the motorhome.

    • @taylorswensen8121
      @taylorswensen8121 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since he used butyl tape, it isn't "permanent." One can simply drill out the pop rivets. Now if he had used 3M Panel Bond Adhesive... that would be a different story. ;)
