Excellent job with your one-sentence reviews, Johanna! You succeeded in giving me a sense of each book. Also, I like the ripple effect you included when you said “ripple effect”! Your video always comes up on my feed, I’m happy to say. Finally, thanks so much for taking part in the livestream yesterday evening - it was wonderful to chat with you!
Well, this was the most exciting video I have ever watched. In the middle of it, right after you talked about Solaris, the house started shaking, light fixtures swinging, etc. Earthquake. I flew to New York for work and I was enjoying coffee and watching your video when it happened. Unforgettable.
Whoa! That's wild, Bart! 🤯 I'm glad that didn't cause harm. Funny how that happened when I was talking about Solaris of all books! Thanks for watching and sharing that unforgettable experience!
As someone who can't stop herself from rambling on in reviews, I am deeply impressed by these one-sentence reviews. Well done you!! Very nice reflection on the first quarter of the year, I am glad it has been such a great few months for you. Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year has in store for you, happy reading ☺
Thank you, Esmay! I've loved watching this challenge on other videos and figured it would be a fun overview since I already had video reviews on all these books. Happy reading! 😊❤️
As I've said multople times before, you are SO GOOD at reviews. Truly my motivation for improving my craft 💕 We were delighted to have you on Page Chewing 🥰Talking to you is always a joy!
I can't believe we are through a whole quarter already. Love the one sentence reviews. It's amazing how informative you made them with just that one sentence. I hope you will do this for every quarter. Always enjoy tuning in for your Why Read segments and it was a joy and privilege to be part of one. Keep them coming. I love strategy tactics video games myself: Two of them i am currently playing (when I have time) Unicorn Overlord and Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader both on the PS5. Loved Dune part 2 overall except maybe the final act I wasn't the biggest fan of the changes to Chani's character and lack of Alia. (Which I think her presence is important to her arc in later books)
Thank you, Chris! I appreciate all your kind words and video game recommendations. I know my husband knows about Warhammer, and I'll have to ask him about Unicorn Overload. While very bold and a huge departure from the book, I liked the choices with Alia and Chani. 😅 But I know you're not alone about that. Evie had a lot of criticism about those choices as well in our talk.
That's a lovely video Johanna ❤️ I've watched your most recent reads wrap-up and really enjoyed them, but since I'm listening to videos while doing chores or cooking, I couldn't properly comment. But I'm so glad you enjoyed Rebecca and Flowers for Algernon as much as I did! I found both of these books impactful for different reasons, but something they had in common was how personal they felt to me: Du Maurier's unnamed female character's lack of confidence reminded me of my 18-19 year old self (which made sense since, as an orphan, she has no parents to guide her through life) and Flowers for Algernon's protagonist reminded me strongly of my own mother (who was emotionally neglected by her own parents while also being intellectually disabled since birth). I added Tanith Lee's Electric Forest on my TBR because of you, and I'm sure you put many other books on my radar as well (I'm currently reading Dune, and I'm having a blast! And will be reading The Curse of the Miswraith as soon as possible, after finishing Mistress of the Empire written by the same author). I love that you read so diversly. All you need now is to brush up on some classics as well (I just watched Allen's Jeopardy 😂 You would love Animal Farm, and it's so short!).
Thank you so much, Jessica! Thank you so much for sharing your personal connections with Rebecca and Flowers for Algernon. Both stories touched me personally as well and brought me back to my childhood insecurities. It’s making me consider ways to discuss it in a future video. I’m so glad you’re enjoying Dune, and I will have to check out Animal Farm! I’m so ill-read with classics, as I mentioned on Jeopardy 😅, but I tend to love them!
I have been debating doing a similar video to this and I think you may have just inspired me! I love the one sentence reviews. Also enjoying warmer weather and being outside more. Let's hope we love Tigana!
Yay! You showed up in my feed this morning. All is back to normal. I like the new way you do in-depth reviews rather than the traditional wrap-ups . I will be starting Tigana this weekend so I look forward to that.
How did you feel about the one sentence reviews? As I heard them, I think they're great to get a feel for what the story is about. However, I was wondering if it would be a good a idea to add a sentence to each one, in which you express your overall opinion of the book. I, for one, found myself wishing to know that. Especially for the Jack Vance book. As to the mass-appeal thing, I don't personally see this as useful, but it might help. A lot of book advertising compares a book to another that's popular. E.g. "If you like The Three Musketeers, you won't be able to put down The Four Handmaids". Something like that might help. This is an idea based on nothing, however, so feel free to ignore it. I'm glad you started Tigana. Can't wait to know what you think of it.
I look forward to reading some of these, especially The Spear Cuts Through Water. Aside from re-reads domiating March, mostly Second Apocalypse, my favourite reads of Q1 were Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove, Robin Hobb's Ship of Destiny and Fool's Errand and Ken Liu's Veiled Throne. My reading enjoyment skyrocketed in the last few months, especially so much of 2023 being in a horrible reading slump, since I don't watch as much booktube anymore.
I remember that reading slump, and I'm so glad it's ending. How did BookTube affect that? Poor recommendations or over-hype? I'm planning to read Lonesome Dove this summer! So excited!
@@Johanna_reads no, not really. I was simply watching more than ever before 😅 But I've since widdled it down that I only watch a handful of channels regularly or prioritise watching (you can relax, you're one of them). It was just getting in the way of my reading generally. I did encounter some books and series during that time I would consider overhyped (Ryan Cahill's Bound & Broken series for example) but hype is incredibly subjective and while I understand how annoying it can be, I don't put much weight behind it. Though I admit, it being the Year of Sanderson, I was pretty tired of hearing about the Secret Projects by the 2nd one 🤣 I really think you would enjoy Lonsome Dove, there honestly isn't much about it I disliked and the character work was excellent. So well realised. I'm probably going to be sticking to 1 book a quarter with that series, I don't want burnout nor do I want it to end too soon though I think Lonesome Dove is by far the longest of them and that's nearly 1000 pages. The sequel is around 500 pages.
I loved the 1-sentence reviews! Such a cool thing, and it was great because you just summarised what it was important to you, and it made it all the more compelling. Loved how you focused on the themes! However, lady you read sooooo much!! This is my personally opinion, but just do whatever content you like; also, regarding "not popping up", I just go to the subscriptions and purposefully scroll to find you; this one did appear on the feed, tbh! I think I may need to follow the hype train and what Shogun; Blue Eye Samurai really paid off!
Thank you, Livia! Keep in mind that most of those books are very short, a few are novella length and one was a short story. Books like “Grand Conspiracy” take me nearly a month to finish. Thank you so much for always checking my content!! ❤️🥰
I love one sentence reviews. I can’t do it, but I enjoy it when others do it. It is hard to get people to click on group review videos. The only thing that seems to help me is to put a number in the title or thumbnail. Like Six Great Books or something like that.
Ripple effect! 😮 Gonna get it out of the way that Last Unicorn is one of my all time favorites. The 2 books I've enjoyed most so far this year have been volume 1 of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, a novella about a young woman in 1883 returning to London to claim her inheritance. Very much a slice of the larger story told over several volumes, but so charming. And the other book, which I just finished, is Just City by Jo Walton, first in a trilogy, about Athena gathering historical figures from throughout time to setup and test a real version of Plato's Republic, raising slave children on an island doomed to be destroyed so as to not mess with history. It's told simply, but I found it quite interesting. I've had some disappointing buddy reads so far this year 😢 (bookwise, not the lovely people who choose to read with me). I think Hemingway was strongest in his shortest works. His short stories aren't to be missed. A Clean Well-lighted Place, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, Hills Like White Elephants, etc
I loved The Last Unicorn and was a little sad when I got to the end of that reread! Thanks for sharing about those other books and about Hemingway's short stories. Sorry to hear your buddy read books haven't gone so well, and I hope you find some great reads this next quarter!
I love this style of video! ❤ summing up books in one sentence is so hard! And I think you did a great job telling us a lot about the book with very few words. You definitely sold me on Claire Keegan’s book which I’ve seen around but had never considered 🙌🏼
My first thought on one sentence review was that it was going to be a review of great sentences in books (good idea for a video perhaps?). My first thought of a possible top choice, 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.'
That's a fun (and very challenging) exercise! One year I did all my reviews (on Goodreads - before YT) in 3 sentences or less, which was a challenge, but one sentence is next level! I also have to say I enjoyed the editing on this video - some great B roll and other effects (the ripple was fun 😀).
What an amazing first quarter, Johanna! I'm pretty happy too, I think 2024 will probably be my best year reading wise. I'm allowing myself to DNF more stuff, and at the same time I have a firmer grasp on my tastes so I usually end up picking books I'll enjoy. And yeah, now I need to watch Shogun 😂
Nice job with those one line reviews! That was a pretty solid list of books you read both in quality and variety. I've also been trying to mix up more genres than just fantasy as well.
Oh really? I'm going to have to check out your Solaris review. I loved the themes and strange phenomena in that book. I remember that I need to get to your wife's Ubik review too. They're both going on my watch list! Thank you so much, Jordan!
I like your decision to look back at your reading over a longer period of time. In general, I really like bigger samples of anything, since it's easier to spot the conscious and unconscious patterns. It looks like you're trying to keep up a mix of fantasy, sci fi, and classics. Is that true? Somewhat by chance, I started my Quarter 1 by diving into Good Reads. Apparently, I set up an account in 2012, but I never used it. My daughter set up an account and it suggested me as a friend. I was appalled the forgotten account made me look like a non-reader. So, I took the only logical response: I obsessively entered hundreds of the books I've read! It was really interesting to take stock, and see the patterns in my reading over time. I saw lots of obsessive plunges in one direction or another. It helped me to think about how I might want to balance out my reading diet going forward. Somewhat by month (and certainly by quarter), I now have more of a mix between new reads and re-reads, older and newer books, fiction and non-fiction, and prose and graphic novels. I'm also mixing in to my heavily sci fi based diet more fantasy, horror, mystery, and comedy.
Nice job trying to catch up on your GoodReads from 2012! It's interesting to do an overview over a long period. I did plan the sci-fi books, but some of my reading has been a little spontaneous here and there. It's nice to have a variety of books to reflect back on!
