My father's favorite. I am sorry I missed her. Mental health did her in or rather the service she got. I am surprised at the schizophrenia diagnosis however. I have not never commented on a utube before but having seen her story on TV recently I have been unable to get her out of my mind and, have been playing her music and, buying it. Her birthday is 20th Oct; She would have been 83. Her appearance in the early years was phenomenal however contrived. Her voice was out of this world. So sad she ended her days as she did.
This was from the days when big stars were still prepared sometines to go on stage and just do it live. If you've got the talent, even if it's mediocre, if you've got the personlity, you should be able to do that.
Kathy Kirby was the most underrated of the other big UK female singers of the 60's, Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw and Dusty Springfield. She had an incredible 'belt' which the other three didn't and if you listen to Shaw and Black, neither of them could sustain a note for more than two or three beats without quivering. (Shaw in particular was overrated and was probably more style over substance due to her unique talent for performing in bare feet,). Dusty was unique and had a sexy sultriness to her voice that was captivating and bluesy. Interestingly enough, I've noticed that Burt Bacharach,in interviews, always talks about Dusty in glowing terms but one gets the distinct impression that he was not all that impressed by Cilla's and Sandie's interpretations of his songs. For example, he definitely preferred Dionne Warwick's version of Alfie over Cilla's.
Yes simon m you're right re Bacharach. He was disappointed I heard that dionne couldnt do the theme song to Alfie for the film itself. I think he consoled her saying they wanted a British girl for it. And apparently, he made Cilla do it loads of times and said "the first one was best!!" Dusty was of a different calibre of course but I have a fondness for cilla as I am a scouser
Totally agree and it was incredible that Cilla & Sandie Shaw were celebs at all because they certainly couldn't sing. I'd say Lulu was hopeless too, but Helen Shapiro & Kathy Kirby were talented. Dusty Springfield stood out in her own way.
@@johnbobson1557 To be fair to Lulu, I saw her in Guys and Dolls in the West End in the late eighties and was struck how good she was. I had gone to the show with mixed feelings and was very pleasantly surprised . This was not the Lulu we knew. Her voice was clear, powerful and she hit every note perfectly. She had obviously trained with a coach to deliver musical theatre which is a different technique to just singing pop.
Lovely Cathy, sadly rather raucous in her upper register by this time and considering her personal history she could have put much more genuine feeling into a song which must have resonated strongly for her.
She reminds me of the belters who used to sing in the back street pubs in Manchester. In looks and voice, and that's no criticism, those lady's had the places up!
Another example of Kathy bellowing out an older song. A bit too full throttle for me. She was dominated by Ambrose and she settled into a 'comfort-zone' of old standards and show tunes. She had this belting style and softer songs never suited her.
Fantastic voice and beautiful woman. Could listen to her and watch her all day. Great memories.

Great to see dear Kathy again. A firm favourite with old Brucie, I believe...
Oh yes
superb voice and a great range
RIP My boyhood crush. Will never forget you.

What a great north and south. A film needs to be made of this woman. Equally as good as Shirley Bassey.
Very much a working man's Shirley Bassey
Wonderful artist ..but not up there with Shirley Bassey!
if you think about Streisand, coming out on Wheeltappers, or Celine Dion, or Whitney, they couldnt put anymore in their performance than this girl.
With the right management she could have been a huge star. That voice is stunning. She must have felt trapped playing gigs like these. So sad.
@@blossomsquirrel if only someone else discovered her instead of that gambling has-been Bert Ambrose
a Goddess .
she was adorable

UK version of Doris Day.
Was this performed at the Wheeltappers and Shunters Club? LOL
Kathy seems well charged up on something ..?
Should’ve gone to America rather than stay in the UK? Shame her decline was so public!

Not her best

Yep, that old band-leader was her downfall. Kathy always 10 years behind the times. Sad.
