Context:
This is the Shawano Speedway (Wisconsin) Spectator racing year end finally. They basically have a slow class and fast class. Slow = "4/6 class” fast = "v-8 class”. AWD cars run in the v-8 class... I don’t make the rules...
PS- The EVO was driven to the track and driven back home... Street car for the win.

I'm unfamiliar with this event, but it's definitely surprising to me that an Evo was allowed to participate against a bunch of open diff front/rear wheel drive cars. That's like bringing an assault rifle to a fist fight, lol...
That mindset is popular in the comments. However I’d argue it’s reverse should be popular. “They allowed guns in the rule, why the hell are you all still bringing knives?” Now if you just really love knives and they are your thing, cool, no judgment here. Just don’t get mad at someone for bringing a car to a race track.

What determines who starts on the inside? That's a huge advantage. I also feel like AWD shouldn't even run against 2WD.

What do you mean Civic is a joke? It got 3rd place, and beat 2nd place in a previous run. It is normal for FWD to be bad in dirty surface.

Awd is better for low traction environments but it adds weight and is less fuel efficient. Depends on your needs i guess.

Correction my ek civic did not have a turbo...i ran with the V8s cuz i a former champion at this track in the 4cyl class

They should specify 2 wheel drives only. It's hard to compete with an optimized AWD car.

Bro that's how racing is, and that's the reason why most types of racings have different classes... Different amount of driven wheel should definitely be a factor that requires to be in a different class. Otherwise none of it would be fun for the average joe.
If a hellcat beat a 150hp civic on a normal drag racing event you'd be crying about how it's unfair that there can be such different power in the same class.
But all of a sudden when an evo pulls up next to a muscle car on a dirt race you think it's fair, when really it's about the same amount of advantage.
We know how it is, it's only unfair when it's the jdm car loosing.
In the end it doesn't really matter because it's just for fun and I'm sure the evo guy had the most fun out of them all, but you gotta stay objective.

Hmmm. No surprise. All wheel drive on slippery conditions, HP doesnt make a difference when traction is lacking. I would rather see the v8 2wd class on pavement against the Evo. That at least would be a fair race.
15:13 Olds (looks like a 1965 Cutlass Sports Coupe) loses it and hits the wall. What a shame was a cool looking car with the right amount of patina except that white hood.

I see a lot of non v8’s. Also should be classes for rear,front and all wheel drive
They have 2 classes 4/6 cylinder and v8; turbo charged cars get moved up to the v8 class. AWD should definately be on its own
The Evo shouldn't be allowed to race in that group but instead an awd class

You can’t tell me a single competitor lined up next to the Evo, a thoroughbred rally car, and didn’t think “F**k me”.
I'd prefer watching this event than the boyish and artificial F1 races anyday.
I see real cars. I see real racers. I see real enthusiastic spectators; sons, daughters, lovers, fathers, aunts etc...
I was really hoping that a Wrx or Sti was in this mix...lol
Would have given the evo a challenge.
They still would've needed to be modded. This evo definitely isn't stock.
An Audi S4 or a Volvo S60P would have been cool to see.

This is literally what spectator drags mean. If you brought your "spectator drag" car to the race on a trailer, that defeats the entire point of spectator drags
My 4x4 Ls swapped Nissan Frontier would give it a run. But yeah that's not really a fare race all wheel drive power to weight ratio. Race is over at the start.
Why is it the V8 class when half the cars are not?
Shawano regs say that if a car is awd or turbo but 4 cyl it must compete with v8s whereas if its 2wd but no turbo its a regular 4 cyl. I wanted to enter my 2000 outback years ago but itd be up against camaros and thats an obvious outcome
That Lancer EVO is beautiful...soon as I saw it I knew that car would be the one that would win. Does Shawano still do this? I'm looking at buying a 1997 Celica GT-Four and would love to take on that Lancer.
They are not doing spectator races for the 2022 season in Shawano. Hopefully they bring them back eventually.

@@zZWolfyZz Evo fixed it when they flipped the motor. They still had tranny issues but that can be remedied by going to the MR tranny. The biggest problem the 4g63 has is the block. Nothing like wollowed out cylinders

@@brianforder4471 OK well let’s look at it like this from somebody that spent a lot of time at race tracks. A car like that up against normal four-cylinder’s will dominate without a doubt so the track officials were probably trying to give that car a little bit of a challenge. An EVO Has upwards of 300 hp stock most four-cylinder’s that would be out on the track in that type of race most likely old Mazda Miata’s, Honda Civic’s, and things of that nature only have anywhere between 120 to 200 hp
All for fun, but not much of it w/o some classes.

Did the one car that won it all have all-wheel drive? If it did they should have made that run a class all by itself or if they can, take it out of all wheel drive. And they should make front-wheel drive run a class by itself. I mean I know it's just spectator drags but old school rear-wheel drive should run old school rear wheel drive. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive should run in their classes. Yeah I'm being Picky!

Its an old adage of "V8" = fast class , "4&6" cylinder = slow class. Maybe they will update classing someday.

Yeah, a random 16yo could have easily won with that lineup in an evo. I think my kids fusion would have. But even awd class, that evo was crazy fast on dirt, it would be hard to beat anyhow!

Stock turbo but I am guessing not stock boost. I thought I heard and external wastegate. Either way you are right. I dont really see a rwd car beating you. The only chance a rwd would even stand a chance is if they were running race tires for that type of racetrack surface,light and very powerful. Either way I enjoy watching the races although you keep spanking them.

On dirt they are a killer but on asphalt it's still a race. They just need to make the races at least three laps
