    A helpful comment just pointed out that my problems with the 5x lens were because the Pixel 7 wasn't changing lenses quickly enough, so it was just cropping in on the main lens. It's my mistake for not noticing in the metadata, but I did test it multiple times throughout the day and any time I took the same photo at all 4 zoom levels, it used the bad lens.

    At 2.35 , the 5x shot looks worse because it probably didn't change lens. Meaning, you pressed 5x and immediately hit the shutter button, so it was shooting in main lens. For the 10x it had a couple seconds more, so it used 5x crop

    This is hands down the best Pixel 7 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro camera comparison video so far. It would be greatly appreciated if you could do an ultimate comparison between the two main cameras, namely pitch the Pixel 7 Pro's 50MP images against the iPhone 14 Pro's 48MP ProRAW outputs. I've been shocked at how good I could get from those 48MP ProRAW files but it would be interesting to see how the Pixel compares.

    • @peterfang51
      @peterfang51 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I just realized that the Pixel 7 Pro does permanent pixel binning with the 50MP sensor so you'll only get 12.5MP output files, RAW or JPEG. So no comparison needed here...

    I just want to emphasize (because I get really annoyed by Apple LS Price-Policy, especially this year) that this "small" price difference is just for the US Market.
    Here in Europe for example the Pixel 7 Pro has the same price as the Pixel 6 Pro at 899€. The iPhone was always already quite a bit more expensive in Europe but in addition Apple has also raised the Price this year even higher making the small iPhone 14 Pro start at an (in my opinion unexceptionable) 1299€. That is a difference of 400€ or in other words almost half the price of the Pixel 7 Pro itself. And if you want the bigger Max you need to pay 1449€ which is now 550€ more, more than half of the Pixel 7 Pro and dangerously close to the price of an entire Pixel 7 with 650€.

    Hey, for whatever reason, your pixel 5x photo in the one example was a crop off the main camera rather than the telephoto being used. This happens on both phones if the phone feels the lighting is not sufficient for the telephoto which allows less light in. This clearly was an outdoor case so I'd say it was a bug but not unheard-of for either phone (and many others).

    This is a great camera comparison, thanks for doing it! I have to say, I'm really enjoying my Pixel 7. It's by far the best camera I've ever owned, and it takes great shots effortlessly. On previous phones, I always had to stand there perfectly still, tap the thing I wanted to focus on, then pray that it stayed still long enough for me to take a not-blurry photo of it. The Pixel 7 is perfect for pointing and shooting.
    With all that said, there's no argument that the iPhone 14 acts more reliably and doesn't try too hard to change the look of a photo during post processing. Although I do think the iPhone oversaturated some of those outdoor shots. Then again, the Pixel's cinematic mode is a total joke.
    All I can say is it amazes me how far computational photography has improved in recent years, and I can't wait to see where both Apple and Google can take things in the future!

  • @ttanke

    Since the problem with the tele lens was because it didn't actually switch to it, I feel like the main downsides of the P7P that I've seen by now after many videos and pictures are: focus on relatively easy-to-shoot things and things related to depth like portrait and cinematic mode (I believe these could be fixed with updates?).
    Other than that, as a "point and shoot" phone camera it's amazing and imo it beats the iPhone, because most people use the regular camera most of the time. Aso very nice is *Real tone which you can clearly see as you switch to the selfie cam: skin tones are much nicer.
    The user-friendly interface on the Pixel is a + too and very nice features like lopng exposure & action pan make you want to use it, and ultimately make it FUN :) great comparison!

    • @raisethereef
      @raisethereef ปีที่แล้ว

      Does Google allow you to shoot RAW now? I remember early on with my Pixel 6 Pro there was no way to shoot full resolution. Google gave us a 48MP sensor and then never used it which was odd to say the least

      @@raisethereef So, there's a difference between RAW and full resolution. RAW + JPG output has been available on Pixels for a long time (i think since the Pixel 4?). Full 50mp resolution RAW isn't available on the 6pro, and I don't think they've enabled that on the 7 series either. You do get 12.5mp RAW though, which, in my experience has been fine to work with.

    • @goJesusandStarcraft
      @goJesusandStarcraft ปีที่แล้ว

      Genuine question - does the pixel even have a RAW mode? I know that, for instance, you can’t get full 50MP images on the pixel, it’s permanently binned down to 12.5MP.

    • @descendency
      @descendency ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goJesusandStarcraft I know it did. I don't think it will ever really output a 50MP file, because the sensor is hardware binned to 12.5 MP (not even a rooted phone can generate the 50MP version, because it's hardware binning).
      At least that's how it used to work. But just like Apple's raw format, Google's "raw" images do come with some processing.

    Seems clear to me that the 5x zoom from the Pixel is not taken with the tele lens but digitally cropped from the main lens since it shows as little detail as the 2x zoom. How did that happen?

    • @derekwright5722
      @derekwright5722 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It often takes a second or two for the phone to "switch" between lenses. The guy that made this video likely hit the "5x" button in the camera app and immediately took the shot which would have been a 5x digital zoom of the main lens rather than using the actual 5x optical lens.

    I have used Pixel 4a for 2 years before recently moving to Iphone 14pro. It might surprise some but honestly the Pixel 4a can beat the iPhone in some cases. The pictures look great compared to Iphone which I often find quite flat. Iphone has always preferred keeping pics a lot neutral, but the 14pro pics lack character sometimes, atleast to a layman. I guess Pixel is best for insta and fb kind pics and IPhone is best for professional photographers as you can do a a lot of post processing
