      Street Fighter 3 and EX were both capable of running on the N64 but... this was during the time Capcom and Nintendo were at odds with the Street Fighter franchise because Nintendo blamed Capcom for the poor performance of Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES by not coding the game to use the Phase 3 clocks of the WDC 65c816 processor (3.58 MHz) but instead used Phase 2 Clocks (2.86 MHz). Nintendo also claimed that Capcom could of easily placed a Nintendo SA-1 chip on the cartridge to also accelerate the game's performance. Because of all of this, Capcom refused to port anymore Street Fighter games to the Nintendo consoles.

    The soundtrack, the camera angle, super cancel, the characters available, the unlimited hit counter, the rats running around the arena, the collapsing Akuma necklace, and the birds flying through the Chun-li stage make this the SF most special and exciting for me. ♥

    It is funny in retrospective when you see how many things Street Fighter IV stole from this underrated gem from the PSX, and I dare to say most of the Ex new characters like Jack, Pullum, Blair, Garuda or Skullomania are far more charismatic than 40% of the Street Fighter III new characters like Twelve, Alex, Gill or Q, in my opinion it is stupid to love SF IV and hate the EX series...they are the same, Street Fighter Classic 2D gameplay but in 3D Looks. Please people, stop hating 3D looking games from the PSX, Saturn, N64 era, it is absurd.

      Have you even played this game? The controls are terrible. Which is weird and makes you think how could they possibly fuck it up that bad. You would imagine it would play some what like tekken and street fighter but no the movements suck horribly. There's a delay when fighting and moving. The game just sucks. Which honestly sucks for the simple fact that it had great potential. If it weren't for the delays when pressing buttons and moving around this game could've been one of the best in general it just needed more work. I couldn't speak on EX 2 or EX3 because I haven't tried them but this game sucks. It's funny because watching the game you wouldn't imagine that it has the kind of lag it has until you actually play it.

    • @PenitentOne8
      @PenitentOne8 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's like when you press the buttons it waits like a second and a half until the game reacts. And that's just not fun at all. Not to mention you really have to time things right and not only do you have to time things right but you have to understand the range. It's not like you don't have to do that with other games but the lag along with everything else really makes this game very unlikable. Like I said it's sad because it really did have a lot of potential even arikas game characters are interesting.

      If this was a platform game, I'm sure it would've been regarded as 2D, even if it uses 3D models and a 3D environment. I believe Klonoa is an example of a 2.5D Platformer as your motion is restricted to two dimensions however the plane you move in can rotate as you move along in the 3D environment.

    • @RJ-cq8dd
      @RJ-cq8dd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Just the way it is. Tekken 1 and 2 didn't really had sidestepping but also counted as 3d games. As long as you use polygons, fighting games are considered 3D.
      Akuma does have a move getting out of the 2D plane though, making it slightly more than 2.5D.

    I loved Street Fighter Ex Plus Alpha. It was brilliant. It didn't drop the ball at all. They went all in from the fighting itself, to the soundtrack, to even the way Ken and Ryu's heel move back and forth when they are bouncing in their stance.

    I only seen two people Play any Street Fighter EX Games, me and a cool friend of mine on The PS2. I enjoyed The SF EX Series along with Traditional 2D SF Series. I remember going to arcades during the early 2000s and me being the only person who ever played them. Lol Still to this day I love The SF EX Series.

    Goodness. Since I'm old, and was heavily into fighting games since 1991, I can actually remember these developments and the impact they had. I'll try to limit this commentary.
    Street Fighter was not intentionally saturating the fighting game market in 1996. They were trying to break out of their dependence on Super Turbo and many beat 'em ups. They were testing several waters. Testing involves experiments, many experiments. They went polygon with EX, Star Gladiator and Rival Schools, they went super fluid 2D with SF3, they went anime with Alpha and JoJo, they went mainstream with Marvel, they went goth with Darkstalkers, and they went ridiculous with Super Puzzle Fighter. The purely unintentional saturation occurred because no one could have predicted that each one of these games would develop a cult following; Is it Capcom's fault their games were mostly really good?
    The whole section on the Capcom's stance concerning the development of a 3D fighting game is based on your assumption that Arika somehow did what Capcom couldn't do: make a 3D fighting game. This is a false assumption because EX is NOT a 3D fighting game (neither are Star Gladiator nor Rival Schools). It's obviously 2D with fancier animations for certain events. So Capcom was correct in their assessment that they did not have the techniques to make a proper 3D fighting game at the time. Later in time, in 1999, apparently they finished acquiring those techniques. The result was Power Stone. And, just so everyone is clear, SF4 and 5 are still 2D.
    The decision to use simple, tried and true game mechanics is what makes this game worthy of being called a Street Fighter game even more so than Street Fighter 5. In this case, it's a timeless cliché that simply works. Your mention of the "odd departure, stylistically" of the character select portraits is unnecessary. How should they have looked, then? Like the polygons in the win poses? That would have been trash because the facial animations were not very good.
    Anyone who was a fan of Street Fighter at the time simply played this game and enjoyed it. You compare Street Fighter to other 2D fighters, NOT to Tekken and Soul Edge. Gamespot was wrong. Period. Certain attack & damage animations were not as smooth as Tekken, but much smoother than Soul Edge. SE masked much of its flaws with a dynamic camera. Also, animation aside, moves came out WAY more accurately in EX than either Tekken or SE. EX plus Alpha came out in 1996, Tekken 3 came out in 1997, and you stated otherwise. EX arcade had decent music, but it was all keyboard. It surpasses Tekken but is surpassed by Soul Edge. But SFEX plus Alpha for PSX, with much better sampled instruments (or real instruments, couldn't tell), blew them all away (especially those subpar remixes for SoulBlade on PSX). The backgrounds are not as good as SE, SFA2, or SF3, but they are not bad. The comments you quoted concerning turtling, Street purists, etc., are totally wrong. The UK mag and ign got the actual sentiment most players at the time were experiencing. WHY would you ask anything on twitter?
    The reason this game doesn't get talked about is because Capcom focuses on a few things at a time. They are pragmatic to a fault. They had action games to worry about, like Mega Man X4, Devil May Cry, Onimusha and Viewtiful Joe. Nevermind their attention to Resident Evil and Dino Crisis. For EX we got a good sequel and a decent sequel for a newer console, SFEX3, and more releases in Japan, so the series left its mark. But what was really hot at the time was Marvel, so we got a few of those. Then Vs. SNK. This game also doesn't get mentioned much because was overshadowed by other games, but also because it hasn't been ported multiple times like other SF titles. I believe Capcom does NOT want to share any credit or profit with ARIKA. Still, I hope they get around to releasing an EX anthology with online versus. Then you will see this game being talked about. "Why NO ONE PLAYS IT!?" Maybe you don't play it, but I still do.
    Oh, lastly, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie was released in January of 1996. Go watch it for those highly useful moments when the name Ryu is spoken. Who the hell still pronounces his name Rye-you? Does he come from a bayou?????

    I liked Street Fighter EX. But then again, I like 3D fighters over 2D ones (though two-dimensional SNK fighting games are good too). P.S. Oh, and PlayStation had Guilty Gear, series which remained the best looking 2D fighting game for most of history. Anyway, EX had some cool designs, Pullum Purna is great, so are Blair and her replacement Sharon in EX2.

    so many negative reviews near the end honestly breaks my heart. i love this game, its a great street fighter title on par with some of the best legacy titles for me.
    i played this game growing up, and i still play it to this day. i bring it out every single week to my FGC meetup and i play it.
    in my experience the game is much deeper than people give it credit for.
    sadly most people i talk to about this game either have fond memories and moved on to newer titles, or never really played it because the graphics turned them off, and/or thought it was a 3d street fighter which is absolutely wrong. this is not a 3d fighter. this is a 2d fighter made with 3d graphics. ive talked to many people who thought this was a 3d street fighter and they never gave it a chance because of that.
    the people who play this game are out there and they love it because they know it for what it is, because theyve taken the time to get to know it.
    you need a simple yet strong character? we got it
    need a high skill technical character? we got it
    this game has everything you want in a street fighter title... literally.
    well... i suppose it could do with a gameplay makeover, but dont tell me those character portraits arent amazing, and that the soundtrack isnt one of the best soundtracks out of any street fighter title.
    people who complain about graphics are complaining about nothing and im convinced that they just like to complain. stick to modern games, dont go back to old titles, ever again. dont tell me you watch everything in 4k and cant appreciate a painting.
    unless youve done a deep dive on this game, you cant judge it, because youve likely only scratched the surface.

    I never got into the original street fighter games. The arcade series passed me by and by the time I got a PS1, I was a Tekken man almost all the way. Except for this game. Ex Plus Alpha was beyond awesome. One of my fondest memories is playing against my nephew with one of us as Akuma and the other as dark Ryu. That was insane. For some reason, the music they made for games back then had more character and dare I say "heart" that a lot of stuff that comes out today.

    The actual fighting was amazing as you could cancel any normal moves into special moves and cancel any special or normals into supers so you can do some super nutty stuff with it, Also give Skullomaina is the PoG Champion. His Instant hell murder is the best in the Street Fighter Series.

    Game feels good, music is still fantastic to listen to, gameplay combo sequences were a test of skill and the oomph in the game is excellent. One of my mates had connections with a video game shop and was able to get EX2 in and I played this game for hours. It was great and it is so under rated. We used to play the 5 v 5 and play 4 randoms and your main, so we had to get used to playing all the characters. The blisters I used to get on my thumb after a session.

    Even though the EX series is the red-headed stepchild of Street Fighter, there are multiple elements that I love about it, such as the soundtracks, the dynamic camera angles, and the Super Cancel mechanic. I even have a soft-spot for some of the more off-the-wall characters introduced in this series. (Skullomania in particular ranks as one of my top 5 all-time favorite fighting game characters)
    I'm also mad at myself for having recently misplaced my copy of Street Fighter EX3. 😣
