@@Costume_CO I thought it was very interesting how the design of the clthes was dictated by the environmental condirions in thw movie. I never gave it much thought until you pointed that out. I must have seen this movie a hundred times. You ought to look at the costumes for the movie L.A. Confidential, wow, wow, wow. Thank You again.
Blade Runner is also my favourite movie. I really enjoyed your detailed analysis of the costumes in this movie, as well as the background research. Rachel’s costumes were some of the most memorable movie outfits I’ve ever seen. Thank you!
I'm a massive Blade Runner fan and and I'm geeking out on all the detail here. Very well done miss. p,s, Utopia is the future for all you off world travelers.
this superb effort deserves ten times more views, professional and thorough...and my dear mom (RIP 🙏🏻) had similar knowledge of fashion and she would have loved your review. I'm simply a Blade Runner fan that does some fashion photography and found this tremendously interesting...thanks!
Wow, what a great two-part retrospective. The comparison with 30s and 40s fashions are a great lesson in history. The behind the scenes production shots were wonderful too. Thanks for delving so deep.
This presentation is fantastic! Your attention to detail to help sort of fill in the blanks for someone like myself who considers this one of their favorite films of all time is just wonderful! It also helps inform fans, like myself, how it's not only music, set design, sound effects and lighting and certainly of course acting and script that go into making a classic. Certainly, in this case, the costumes/wardrobe had a lot to do with the overall look and vibe of this great film. Cheers and thanks!
This is stunning work, I love your reflecting earlier styles and tying them into 80s fashion (that picture of Crawford in the Adrian is stunning; vaguely Egyptian without being gaundy) Can't wait to dive into Part 1 and your other videos. So much style and beauty in this time, thank you
Hi Nick, thank you so much for commenting. Some of the costumes have come up for auction recently. I recently did an interview with Propstore over their Zhora and Decker outfits. I will get you the link.
Thank you for this excellent video, I'm amazed that you were able to get the costume designer's notes, that was so informative, I love this Replicant video that you made thanks again.
I love both Blade Runner films. Don't know a thing about fashion/costumes or how I stumbled across your videos. Very detailed analysis. Interesting and solid work all around, I subscribed.
angellover02171 I wonder if Rutger was inspired by Gary Numan's 1979 album, "Replicas", where Numan is on the front cover with bleached blond hair and portraying the character of.....you guessed it....an artificial lifeform, or as Gary wrote, "a Machman". In fact, fascinatingly, the whole album is influenced by Philip K. Dick and so predates Bladerunner by some 3 years......I've never read anywhere of any kind of influence of "Replicas" on Bladerunner but for me, Bladerunner comes across as at least partly the theatrical realisation of Numan's album; startlingly so, imho.
A minor point, but; Rachael is actually a Nexus 6, as Bryant tells Deckard when he directs him to 'go put the machine on it' over at the Tyrell Crporation. She's not a "Nexus 7" as you mention at 0:43; although it's fair enough for you to say she's "experimental", since that's true in the theatrical-release version (as per Deckard's 'happy-ending' voice-over). But interestingly, she's not a 'special' Nexus 6 (with a longer life span) in any of the non-narrated versions; and presumably she'll be dying much sooner than Deckard will, as far as he knows when he runs away with her. Other than that quibble, thanks so much for these two outstanding videos, on my favorite movie also.
@@Costume_CO You're welcome. In fact, Gaff even points out to Deckard that "It's too bad she won't live.." at the end, which, since Gaff's been trailing Deckard all along, we can reasonably take to mean that he knows her to have 'a four-year life span'. And without the happy ending, we have no reason to doubt it. Thanks to both you and your husband, for being fans of BR. I'd be inclined to use the same litmus test you did, in determining compatibility with a partner, given that it became my own favorite film as well. And utterly apart from the fact that I worked on that movie's production throughout 1981, back when I was a teenager. A happy coincidence. Had no idea at the time...lol...could've turned out a bomb.
I have just found you and I'm excited. This video is awesome. Can you tell me the link of pompadour tutorial? I can't find it on the description. Thanks!!
do you have any idea what shoes/boots Roy Batty wears with his grey pants and trench coat? they look like high tops or boots with a white sole, i can’t find any great photos of them.
@@Costume_CO All good! Honestly thought they looked like high top vans from today. don’t think those existed then, though. I do think he’s shoes at the end of the movie are the same as Deckard’s, those black adidas.
Amazing video as per usual, Thank you for the cosplay material recommendations. This is the opposite of this film, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on costumes from Girl with the pearl earring (2003), I know kind of a weird request, but I was watching it the other day and thought of your videos, particularly because it features styles that I'm unfamiliar with (1600's netherlands). Thanks very much and Have a great day!
Thank You for responding! Yep, that's the one. The costumes are interesting, for most of the characters there seems to be a religious aspect (head coverings, so and so), There is an elizabethan ruff thing happening, but paired with a black and white color attire, that I know represents something, I 'm just not quite sure what. Possibly mourning. (Judy Parfitt plays Maria Thins? and that is her main attire for the film, but you also see the style on extras.) It can be a little slow as far as pacing, but I think it's a beautiful film. There are also other characters that wear costumes that are maybe prevalent to that time period, but seem off or the costume is just for that particular characters lifestyle. Either way I thought it was interesting.
+nightowl907 Oh yes, the style of fashions in the Netherlands in the 1600s was very conservative and like the puritans they wore a lot of black, but it was an everyday, piuos colour. The women would all wear their heads covered and also collars and cuffs. They would still have the same structure as the dress in England and France, but much more modest. Okay, I will check it out
The costumes in 2049 were really disappointing. There's not much to say about them. They all looked like you could walk into any store today and buy them off the rack.
““I don’t think it’s a fashionable film at all!” Blade Runner 2049 costume designer Renée April told Vogue of her part in realising the dystopian universe. “I made costumes for the dark, wet, polluted, miserable world that Denis [Villeneuve] created. I had to hold myself back and remove anything too avant-garde or outré because it didn’t help the story. There were no superhero suits because the world needed to be realistic, and the characters relatable.””
I really don't see how that's an argument. There's a clear artistic choice in how characters are portrayed and what they wear is a reflection of their condition. Think about Luv, the enslaved children, the chief of police, old deckard, wallace. Clearly, there is a subject to be discussed, and I'd be more than happy to hear what costumeco has to say about that. I also have to add how wonderful of a subject Joi is, considering her many costumes.
Oh YES! I´m a huge fan of the new Star Wars movies and the costumes match the characters so well. And as you prove Kaplan´s costumes are so thoughtful chosen....there are just too many good movies and costumes (BURLESQUE!!! ♥) Have you thought about analysing something made by Sandy Powell ? Sean Young was stunning in this movie. All her costumes complimented her figure. Wowza!!!!!

I'm not sure if this is true, but read somewhere that Rutger Hauer chose to dye his hair platinum because he thought it would look futuristic.
Thanks! Sounds plausible - Harrison Ford did his own hair without consulting production.
Yes, it's true, Mr Scott was actually not very happy about it, but turned out to be awesome.

Thanks Noah! I finally saw it so I hope to get to it in the near future. Just finishig up a few other shows.
Thank you, great video! ☀️

Thank you! I finally saw the sequel, I hope to do it in the near future.
